Evaluation of layered zinc hydroxide nitrate and zinc/nickel double hydroxide salts in the removal of chromate ions from solutions

Atomic scale insight into the decomposition of nanocrystalline zinc hydroxynitrate toward ZnO using Mn2+ paramagnetic probes

Layered zinc hydroxynitrate (ZHN), with the chemical formula Zn5 (OH)8 (NO3)2·2H2O, exhibits a range of special properties such as anion-exchange and intercalation capacity, as well as biocompatibility, making it attractive for a large variety of applications in fields from nanotechnology to healthcare and agriculture. In this study nanocrystalline ZHN doped with 1,000 ppm Mn2+ was prepared by two synthesis methods (coprecipitation and solid state reaction) using similar environment-friendly precursors. The complex morpho-structural [X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, textural analysis] and spectroscopic [Fourier transform infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)] characterization of the two ZHN nanopowders showed similar crystalline structures with Mn2+ ions localized in the nanocrystals volume, but with differences in their morphological and textural characteristics, as well as in the doping efficiency. ZHN obtained by coprecipitation consists of larger nanoplatelets with more than two times larger specific surface area and pore volume, as well as a dopant concentration than in the ZHN sample obtained by solid state reaction. The thermal stability and the on-set of the structural phase transformation have been investigated at atomic scale with high accuracy by EPR, using Mn2+ as paramagnetic probes. The on-set of the ZHN structural phase transformation toward ZnO was observed by EPR to take place at 110°C and 130°C for the samples prepared by coprecipitation and solid state reaction, respectively, evidencing a manganese induced local decrease of the transformation temperature. Our results contribute to the selection of the most appropriate ZHN synthesis method for specific applications and in the development of new green, cost-effective synthesis routes for Mn2+ doped nano-ZnO.

Co-precipitation based on layered double hydroxides and anionic surfactants for preconcentration of six benzoylurea insecticides in soft drinks before simultaneous analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography

Layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) modified with anionic surfactants via a co-precipitation method were developed for preconcentrating and simultaneous analysis of six benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The anionic surfactants with different chain lengths, including sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium 1-nonane sulfonate (SNS), and sodium 1-hexane sulfonate monohydrate (SHS) were investigated to improve the extraction efficiency of LDHs. The SDBS-LDHs provided the highest efficiency for the enrichment of the BUs studied. Under the chosen conditions, enrichment factors in the range of 38-69 and detection limits in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 were achieved. Good reproducibilities (RSD < 13.8%) and recoveries (71.4-118.7%) were also obtained. The proposed preconcentration method, used as an in situ procedure offers rapid and simple simultaneous preparation of LDHs and extraction of BUs. The method was successfully applied for residue analysis of BUs in fruit- and flower-derived soft drink samples.

Layered zinc hydroxide as an adsorbent for phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater

At present, phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater is gaining wide attention due to the dual issues of eutrophication, caused by the increased production of algae, and universal phosphorus scarcity. In this study, a layered zinc hydroxide (LZH) was synthesized by a simple precipitation method and characterized via various techniques. Experiments investigating the effect of contact time, pH, LZH dose, initial phosphate concentration, and co-existing ions on phosphate adsorption were conducted. LZH exhibited a high phosphate adsorption capacity (135.4 mg g⁻¹) at a neutral pH. More than 50% of phosphate was removed within the first 60 s of contact time at an initial phosphate concentration of 5 mg L⁻¹. Phosphate removal using the as-prepared LZH adsorbent was also tested in real treated sewage effluent reducing the residual phosphate amount to levels inhibiting to the growth of algae. Furthermore, phosphate desorption from LZH was investigated using acetic acid and sodium hydroxide regenerants which showed to be very effective for phosphate recovery.

This study demonstrates a novel LZH adsorbent synthesized, characterized and applied for high phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater.

Dissolvable Mg/Al layered double hydroxides and surfactant as an extractant for trace analysis of benzoylurea insecticides by high performance liquid chromatography

A rapid and simple preconcentration method using dissolvable Mg/Al layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) and high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA) was developed for the analysis of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in water and honey samples. The proposed dissolvable LDHs for the extraction can be prepared in one step by the sequential addition of sodium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, aluminium chloride, and sodium dodecyl sulfate into the sample solution containing the target BUs. The co-precipitate phase was simply obtained after centrifugation, and the phase was then dissolved with formic acid before analysis by HPLC. The developed method provided an enrichment factor of 12.5-23.7. LODs were obtained in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 for deionized water, 0.2-2.0 μg L^-1 for environmental waters, and 0.5-2.0 μg L^-1 for the analyzed honey samples. Good recoveries ranging from 78.4 to 117.8% and 72.7 to 117.9% for water and honey samples, respectively, were obtained.

Comparative sorption studies of chromate by nano-and-micro sized Fe2O3 particles

The comparative adsorption studies of Cr (VI) on nano and micro-powder Fe2O3 were investigated using kinetics and batch adsorption techniques. The uptake of chromate onto both the oxides of iron was observed to be dependent on the pH, contact time, temperature, media dosage and concentration of chromate anions. The values of sorption maxima were higher in the case of Fe2O3 nanopowder than the micro-powder which can be ascribed to the high surface area and point of zero charge (PZC) of the former oxide. The Dubinin-Radushkivech and Langmuir models were found well fitted for the description of the batch adsorption data. The FTIR studies confirmed that the hexavalent chromium was adsorbed onto both the iron oxides in the form of the Cr2O72−.

Graphene oxide/Fe3O4/SO3H nanohybrid: a new adsorbent for adsorption and reduction of Cr(vi) from aqueous solutions
