Fabrication of metal-organic framework@Yeast composite materials for efficient removal of Pb2+ in water

Efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue using green synthesized yeast supported iron nanoparticles

To reduce the consumption of oxidant and catalyst in Fenton-like reaction and to realize the reuse of catalyst, yeast supported iron nanoparticles (nZVI@SCM) was synthesized by tobacco leaf extract and applied in the heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of aqueous methylene blue (MB) at ambient conditions. The performance of the composite was exploited in terms of catalytic activity and factors influencing MB degradation. The surface changes of nZVI@SCM before and after reaction were characterized by XPS, SEM, FT-IR and XRD. Iron leaching, primary reactive oxidizing species, and the storage stability and reusability of catalyst were also investigated. Typically, 99.7% removal of 50 mg/L MB, with a TOC removal of 97.2%, could be achieved within 10 h by 0.1 g/L nZVI@SCM coupled with 1.0 mM H2O2. The MB degradation is in good agreement with the pseudo-first-order model, and hydroxyl radicals in the bulk solution is the main reactive oxidizing species responsible for MB degradation. Based on the identified intermediates by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, the possible MB degradation mechanism in the nZVI@SCM/H2O2 system is discussed. The developed high-performance nZVI@SCM catalyst strategy can provide a new route in enhancing the Fenton-like degradation of organic contaminants with less consumption of catalyst and oxidant.

Construction of Immobilized Enzymes with Yeast and Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Biocatalytic Activities

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising host materials for enzyme immobilization and protection. Herein, ZIF-8 nanocubes were successfully self-assembled onto yeast as a biological template to obtain hybrid Y@ZIF-8. The size, morphology, and loading efficiency of ZIF-8 nanoparticles assembled on yeast templates can be well-regulated by adjusting the various synthetic parameters. Particularly, the amount of water significantly affected the particle size of ZIF-8 assembled on yeast. Through using a cross-linking agent, the relative enzyme activity of Y@ZIF-8@t-CAT could be greatly enhanced and remained the highest even after seven consecutive cycles, with improved cycling stability, as compared to that of Y@ZIF-8@CAT. In addition to the effect of the physicochemical properties of Y@ZIF-8 on the loading efficiency, the temperature tolerance, pH tolerance, and storage stability of Y@ZIF-8@t-CAT were also systematically investigated. Importantly, the catalytic activity of free catalase was decreased to 72% by 45 days, while the activity of the immobilized catalase remained above 99%, suggesting good storage stability. The present work demonstrates that yeast-templated ZIF-8 nanoparticles have a high potential to be used as biocompatible immobilization materials and are promising candidates for the preparation of effective biocatalysts in biomedicine applications.

A critical review on recent developments in MOF adsorbents for the elimination of toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions

Effective and substantial remediation of contaminants especially heavy metals from water is still a big challenge in terms of both environmental and biological perspectives because of their adverse effects on the human health. Many techniques including adsorption, ion exchange, co-precipitation, chemical reduction, ultrafiltration, etc. are reported for eliminating heavy metal ions from the water. However, adsorption has preferred because of its simple and easy handlings. Several types of adsorbents are observed and documented well for the purpose. Recently, highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed by incorporating metals and organic ligands together and claimed as potent adsorbents for the remediation of highly toxic heavy metals from the aqueous solutions due to their unique features like greater surface area, high chemical stability, green and reuse material, etc. In this review, the authors discussed systematically some recent developments about secure MOFs to eliminate the toxic metals such as arsenic (both arsenite and arsenate), chromium(VI), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). MOFs are observed as the most efficient adsorbents with greater selectivity as well as high adsorption capacity for metallic contamination. Graphical abstract.

Highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ and Cu2+ based on ZIF-67/MWCNT/Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode

A series of different facile modification layers (MLs) was designed to gradually increase the electrochemical sensing performance of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for simultaneously detecting Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺. ML designs were mainly a different combination of ZIF-67, MWCNT and Nafion, and their different electrochemical sensing performances were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), square wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV) and chronocoulometry. The fabricated sensor, which modified with ZIF-67/MWCNT and Nafion layer, exhibited the biggest response peak current to Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺. In addition, it displayed a wide linear detection range of 1.38 nM-5 μM for Pb²⁺ and 1.26 nM-5 μM for Cu²⁺, a detection accuracy of about 1 nM for both Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺, and an excellent stability for both Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺. We also analyzed the real water sample taken from Changchun's Sanjia Lake and Yan Lake. We believe this ML design provides instruction for building high-performance electrochemical sensing systems.
