Air pollution trend in Chandigarh during 2019-2022: status and influence of meteorological factors

The degradation of ambient air quality is a pressing global concern, and India, as a developing nation, has witnessed a rapid surge in industrial activities in recent decades. This surge has resulted in numerous Indian cities ranking among the world's most polluted urban areas. Chandigarh, strategically positioned within the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP), has not escaped this distressing trend, experiencing a significant spike in air pollution levels. This study focuses on comprehending and addressing the air quality issues in Chandigarh, shedding light on the evolution of air pollution trends and their dependence on meteorological factors. Notably, the study reveals that, with the exception of O3, pollutant concentrations surge during the rice stubble burning season. These pollutants persist in the atmosphere for prolonged periods, exacerbating the situation during winter due to lower temperatures and heightened use of fossil fuels for heating by low-income households. In contrast, the wheat stubble burning period does not significantly impact pollutant concentrations. The study also identifies a spring peak in surface O3 concentrations, attributed to favorable high temperatures that promote the photochemical reactions responsible for this phenomenon, a distinctive feature in South Asia and the Himalayas. An examination of the connection between pollutant concentrations and meteorological parameters underscores that elevated pollutant levels, except for CO, are linked to lower relative humidity and temperatures. This suggests that current development patterns have contributed to the escalation of air pollution in Chandigarh, necessitating urgent interventions to preserve the city's aesthetics and the health of its residents. Furthermore, to model and monitor pollutant behavior in Chandigarh, more extensive and extended studies are imperative. Both short-term and long-term investigations into the environmental and health impacts of air pollutants, including primary and secondary pollutants, are of paramount importance. These endeavors are essential for the well-being of both the environment and the population of Chandigarh.

Cross-cultural food practices and nutrition seeking behaviors among pregnant and postpartum Indian women living in Australia

No research has explored the experiences of Indian women who become pregnant after they migrate to Australia, and how their existing traditions mix with their new environment and subsequently impact eating patterns. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven women of Indian heritage who were living in Australia, and data were thematically analyzed. The researchers identified two main themes were identified (a) foods to eat and which to avoid, and (b) support networks and sources of health information during pregnancy. Women get advice and information from a range of sources and have diverse attitudes and beliefs about cultural food practices. that are both rigid and flexible, as well as traditional and contemporary.

Significance of MOF adsorbents in uranium remediation from water

Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.

Degradation of Diazo Dye and its Kinetic and Equilibrium Studies Using the Potential of Bryophyllum fedtschenkoiin Aqueous System

Phytoremediation is emerging as an eco-friendly, innovative, and cost-effective approach for the removal of textile dyes from wastewater from the previous decade. The current research work aims to explore the potential of a terrestrial ornamental plant, Bryophyllum fedtschenkoi (Raym.-Hamet & H. Perrier) Lauz.-March. for remediating the diazo dye as Congo red (CR) in aqueous form. B. fedtschenkoi was grown hydroponically before treatment with 100 mL of a different concentration of CR dye solution. A maximum decolorization potential of 90% was obtained for 10 mg L^- 1 after 40 h of equilibrium. The kinetic studies have revealed that the experimental results for the removal of CR dye using the B .fedtschenkoi plant are suitable for Pseudo-first order with R² ≥ 0.92, while the equilibrium studies agreed with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm with R² ≥ 0.909. The dye removal by the plant was confirmed with the help of analytical techniques Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) were also performed on dye-degraded metabolites to explore the mechanism of dye degradation.

Recent advances in nanomaterial developments for efficient removal of Hg(II) from water

"Water" contamination by mercury Hg(II) has become the biggest concern due to its severe toxicities on public health. There are different conventional techniques like ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and filtration that have been used for the elimination of Hg(II) from the aqueous solutions. Although, these techniques have some drawbacks during the remediation of Hg(II) present in water. Adsorption could be a better option for the elimination of Hg(II) from the aqueous solutions. "Conventional adsorbents" like zeolite, clay, and activated carbons are inefficient for this purpose. Recently, nanomaterials have attracted attention for the elimination of Hg(II) from the aqueous solutions due to high porosity, better surface properties, and high efficiency. In this review, a thorough discussion has been carried out on the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials along with mechanisms involved in the elimination of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions.

Kinetic Evaluation for Removal of an Anionic Diazo Direct Red 28 by Using Phytoremediation Potential of Salvinia molesta Mitchell

The dye removal using phytoremediation has demonstrated its potential to degrade many recalcitrant dyes. The kinetic investigations for phytoremediation ability of Salvinia molesta Mitchell (S. molesta) were evaluated for Direct Red 28 (DR28) dye in the present research work. The potential of S. molesta was analysed at different pH and different initial dye concentrations. About 90 % of dye decolorization was achieved for 50 mg L^-1 dye solution with 4 g of S. molesta plant at pH 6.5. The experimental results were evaluated with pseudo-first, pseudo-second and Elovich kinetic models. The validation indicated the most suitable curve with Pseudo-second order having the correlation value R² ≥ 0.99. FTIR studies supported the phytoextraction of DR28 through functional group interaction between plant hairy roots and dye molecules. The results of the present studies suggests that S. molesta can be utilized for remediation of water bodies and wetlands contaminated with dye wastewater in natural conditions.

A review on application of phytoremediation technique for eradication of synthetic dyes by using ornamental plants

Phytoremediation emerges as an innovative and eco-friendly technique to remediate textile dyes with the use of various categories of plants. In recent years, ornamental plants emerge as more attractive and effective substitute in comparison to edible plants for phytoremediation. Regardless of aesthetic value, some ornamental plants can be grown to remediate the sites contaminated with dyes, heavy metals, pesticides, or other organic compounds. In this review, we focus on pioneer research on synthetic dye removal using ornamental plants and evaluate the phytoremediation capability of ornamental plants for treatment of textile effluent. This paper also emphasized specific ornamental plants having high accumulation and tolerance ability for removal of dyes. The mechanisms explored for the phytoremediation of dyes by ornamental plants have also been explained. This review will also be helpful for researchers for exploring more new ornamental plants in phytoremediation technique.

Bioremediation: An effective approach of mercury removal from the aqueous solutions

Mercury (Hg(II)) is the 16th rarest element present in the earth's crust. Due to rapid industrialization and urban expansions, the mercury concentration has been elevated in the environment. Hg(II) contamination in the aqueous environment has become a great challenge for human beings. The main source of Hg(II) in the aqueous phase is untreated effluent industries (such as the paper industry). Hg(II) is non-biodegradable in nature and even its trace amount in an aqueous environment can pose chronic threats among the humans (damage to the central nervous system, respiratory system, and cardiovascular system, mutation of DNA), animals, and aquatic creatures. Therefore, the removal of mercury from aqueous solutions is an urgent need of the modern era. The conventional techniques such as ion exchange, precipitation, membrane filtrations are costly and also generate byproducts in the environment. Bioremediation is a sustainable, environmentally sound, and cost-effective technique to remove Hg(II) from the aqueous solutions. In this process, naturally occurring microorganisms are utilized to remove the Hg(II) from the aqueous solutions. Lentinus edodes, U. lactuca, and Typha domingensis are found to have great potential to remove mercury from water ranged from ~100 mg g^-1 to 337 mg g^-1.

Food Insecurity and Dietary Intake among Rural Indian Women: An Exploratory Study

Food insecurity is an important contributor to health and a factor in both underweight and malnutrition, and overweight and obesity. Countries where both undernutrition and overweight and obesity coexist are said to be experiencing a double burden of malnutrition. India is one example of a country experiencing this double burden. Women have been found to experience the negative impacts of food insecurity and obesity, however, the reasons that women experience the impact of malnutrition more so than men are complex and are under-researched. This current research employed a mixed methods approach to begin to fill this gap by exploring the dietary intake, anthropometric characteristics, and food security status of rural Indian women. In total, 78 household were surveyed. The average waist measurement, waist to hip ratio, and BMI were all above WHO recommendations, with two thirds of participants categorized as obese. Contributing to these findings was a very limited diet, high in energy, and low in protein and iron. The findings of this research suggest that the rural Indian women in this study have a lack of diet diversity and may be at risk of a range of non-communicable diseases.

Asia's largest urban slum-Dharavi: A global model for management of COVID-19

The Dharavi sector of Mumbai, India is constituted as one of the biggest slums of Asia and the world's most populated areas. The COVID-19 outburst is at its peak in May and curve gets flattened within next two months. This article focuses on factors responsible for transmission, prevention and in controlling the COVID-19 spread in Dharavi. The COVID-19 data was interpreted in terms of Case Recovery Rate (CRR) and Case Fatality Rate (CFR) for total and closed both. The CFR per closed reached 10.12% nearly to per total 9.82% in Dharavi on 31st July 2020. The CRR per total cases in Dharavi and Mumbai is 87.16 & 76.18% and per closed cases is 89.87 & 93.20% respectively in comparison to the CFR. The calculated CFR and CRR for both Dharavi and Mumbai suggest that the COVID-19 recovery rate is more than the fatality rate. The Dharavi people serve as an important role in controlling the pandemic by adopting 4-T model tracing, tracking, testing, and treating strategy. This article is beneficial for government policy makers and private agencies in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic in densely populated areas and also for nations with high fatality rate.

A critical review on recent developments in MOF adsorbents for the elimination of toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions

Effective and substantial remediation of contaminants especially heavy metals from water is still a big challenge in terms of both environmental and biological perspectives because of their adverse effects on the human health. Many techniques including adsorption, ion exchange, co-precipitation, chemical reduction, ultrafiltration, etc. are reported for eliminating heavy metal ions from the water. However, adsorption has preferred because of its simple and easy handlings. Several types of adsorbents are observed and documented well for the purpose. Recently, highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed by incorporating metals and organic ligands together and claimed as potent adsorbents for the remediation of highly toxic heavy metals from the aqueous solutions due to their unique features like greater surface area, high chemical stability, green and reuse material, etc. In this review, the authors discussed systematically some recent developments about secure MOFs to eliminate the toxic metals such as arsenic (both arsenite and arsenate), chromium(VI), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb). MOFs are observed as the most efficient adsorbents with greater selectivity as well as high adsorption capacity for metallic contamination. Graphical abstract.

Epidemic Trend of COVID-19 Transmission in India During Lockdown-1 Phase

To assess the current epidemic trend of COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 in India, the epidemic dynamics of COVID-19 cases in India in terms of Case Fatality Rate (CFR), Case Recovery Rate (CRR) and Mortality rate (MR) COVID-19 have been evaluated during Lockdown-1. The analysis includes (i) epidemic curve of Covid-19 cases (ii) demographic analysis (iii) calculation of the CFR and CRR by different methods (iv) calculation of MR (v) Geo-temporal analysis (vi) epidemiological transmission factor (vii) evaluation of the effects and impact of infection, prevention and control in India. A total of 10,815 COVID-19 confirmed cases have been reported in 31 states/union territories as of April 14, 2020 with 9272 active cases (85.73%), 1190 cured/discharged (11%), and 353 deaths (3.23%). Among confirmed cases, most cases (59%) are aged 20-49 which is working age in India and 76% cases are reported for men. The median age of Indian COVID-19 patients found to be 39. As of April 14, the CFR per total cases in India is 3.32% and per closed cases is 23.27%. The CRR per total cases in India is 11.00% and per closed cases is 76.72%, which indicates that the recovery rate of COVID-19 is more than the fatality rate in India. The prevention and control measures taken by the state and central governments at all levels and measure of maintenance of social distancing by people have resulted in effective curbing in the COVID-19 transmission in India.

Phytoremediation of azo dye methyl red by macroalgae Chara vulgaris L.: kinetic and equilibrium studies

Phytoremediation is an innovative, eco-friendly, and solar-driven technique, which becomes a well-known alternative solution for remediation of hazardous dyes from wastewater. In present research work, potential of a submerged fresh water macroalgae Chara vulgaris L. (C. vulgaris) examined for removal of acidic azo dye methyl red (MR) in its solution form. A series of experiments were done with C. vulgaris to predict the effects of different parameters viz. contact time, initial dye concentration, amount of macroalgae, and pH. The increase in initial dye concentration directly impacts on the potential of macroalgae. The decolorization percentage declined with increase in initial dye concentration. The equilibrium condition was found to achieve after contact time of approximately 48 h. The decolorization of MR dye was found to be favorable at pH 5. The macroalgae was successfully utilized repeatedly with MR for eight cycles in batch experiments. The kinetics of phytoremediation of MR dye was studied with help of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich kinetic models and the results were well suited to pseudo-second-order kinetic model with the correlation value R² ≥ 0.99. In addition, the experimental data was also assessed by using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption equilibrium isotherms. The results of phytoremediation data was found to be in favor of Freundlich equilibrium isotherm which having the correlation value R² ≥ 0.977. The intraparticle diffusion model also studied to interpret the macroalgae phytoremediation mechanism for phytoremediation of MR. The surface interactions of C. vulgaris were investigated before and after the removal of dye with Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technique. On the basis of these studies, a hypothetical mechanism has also been proposed to depict the phytoremediation of acidic azo dye by C. vulgaris.

Documenting the Food Insecurity Experiences and Nutritional Status of Women in India: Study Protocol

BACKGROUND

Despite significant growth and change in India over the past two decades, some public health indicators have failed to keep pace. One such indicator is food insecurity. India is home to the largest number of people experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Food security is described as "a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life". While there has been considerable research investigating the role of crop yields, policy interventions, and food production in alleviating food insecurity in India, there is insufficient research investigating the social and cultural influences of food insecurity, including the role of women. The primary aim of this research is to investigate the experience of food insecurity among women in India. The objectives of this research are (1) to determine the role of women in food production and its contribution to household food security; (2) to examine the gender roles within households and the decision-making processes that influence food security, and (3) to investigate household nutritional status and food insecurity experience.

METHODS

Participants will include women who live in a village in Punjab, India. Interviews with 100 households, drawn from a convenience sample will be conducted. Interviews will be conducted in Punjabi with simultaneous English translation, and will include: food related experiences, anthropometric measurements (weight, height, waist, and hip) and dietary assessment (24-h diet recall, two non-consecutive days), dwelling facilities, agriculture related information, including household agriculture activities undertaken, food security status (via the United States Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Scale Measurement), and demographic information.

DISCUSSION

This study aims to investigate a range of determinants of food insecurity among a rural population. It will allow for the identification of some of the components of household food insecurity among women in India and will go part of the way to understanding how and why India continues to experience food and nutritional insecurity despite growth and progress in a range of other indicators.

Ultrasonic Study of Molecular Interactions in Polymeric Solution of Polypropylene Glycol-400 and Ethanol at 303 K

A comprehensive ultrasonic investigation of molecular interactions in the polymeric solution of polypropylene glycol (PPG)-400 and ethanol at 303 K has been performed using the data available in literature. Several acoustic parameters such as acoustic impedance, isothermal compressibility, molar sound velocity, molar adiabatic compressibility, internal pressure, free volume, van der Waals constants, molar cohesive energy and relaxation time have been explored. Thermo-dynamical parameters viz.: available volume, intermolecular free length, relative association, surface tension, pseudo-Gruneisen parameter, Debye temperature, diff usion constant, coefficient of thermal conductivity and latent heat of melting have been evaluated. Several thermo- elastic parameters such as Young modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus and Poisson's ratio are also determined. Excess parameters are computed to study the relative molecular interactions and strength of interaction between the constituents of the polymer mixture. The volume expansivity data is used to evaluate Moelwyn-Hughes parameter, reduced volume, reduced isothermal bulk modulus, Sharma's constants, Huggins parameter, isobaric, isochoric, and isothermal lattice Gruneisen parameters, fractional free volume, repulsive exponent, Bayer's non-linear parameter, cohesive energy density and characteristic temperature. Schaaff 's collision factor theory, Jacobson's free length theory, Nomoto's relation, Van Dael-Vangeel relation, impedance dependence relation, Junjie relation and ideal mixing relation have been used to evaluate ultrasonic velocities in the system under study. The obtained results have been compared with earlier experimental results. The non-ideal behaviour of the mixture has been explained in terms of its composition and variation of its acoustical and thermo-dynamical parameters.

Critical appraisal of the existing and emerging therapies for smoking cessation

Smoking is a major health problem of the society as it causes a wide variety of health hazards and produces a strong addictive behavior. Various pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments have been tried for smoking cessation from time to time. Some of the pharmacological treatments have been able to achieve the status of first line and second line therapy for smoking cessation by the US Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline. Some newer and very promising drugs have come up and are in the clinical trials for establishment of their efficacy. While some other drugs have been tried from time to time but have failed to show any consistent results. Various non pharmacological therapies like behavioural therapy are also of utmost importance in this regard. This article gives a brief review and critical assessment of the existing and the emerging smoking cessation therapies.

Clinical evaluation of two antiemetic combinations palonosetron dexamethasone versus ondansetron dexamethasone in chemotherapy of head and neck cancer

INTRODUCTION

Palonosetron and ondansetron are two selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT3) receptor antagonists that have shown remarkable efficacy in controlling nausea and vomiting following administration of moderately emetic anticancer chemotherapy. Their efficacy is enhanced by the concurrent administration of dexamethasone. In the present study, we aimed to compare the antiemetic efficacy of a palonosetron plus dexamethasone (PD) schedule versus an ondansetron plus dexamethasone (OD) schedule.

METHODS

A randomised, crossover trial was conducted in 30 patients with head and neck cancer who were receiving moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. The patients were divided into two groups. In the first cycle, one group was given a PD schedule and the other, an OD schedule. For the subsequent cycle, crossover of the antiemetic schedules was done. The antiemetic effects were evaluated by recording the intensity of nausea and the frequency of vomiting in the acute and delayed phases.

RESULTS

Complete response in the acute phase was observed in 83.3 percent of the patients on the PD schedule and in 80 percent of those on the OD schedule. In the delayed phase, complete response was observed in 76.7 percent and 66.7 percent of the patients on the PD schedule and OD schedule, respectively. The overall rate of complete response was 66.7 percent in the PD group and 46.7 percent in the OD group. In the PD group, there were 73.3 percent of nausea-free patients as opposed to 66.7 percent in the OD group.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest that the PD schedule was superior to the OD schedule in controlling emesis in cancer chemotherapy, although this difference was not statistically significant.
