Fabrication of lanthanum linked trimesic acid as porous metal organic frameworks for effective nitrate and phosphate adsorption

Zn-coordination polymers for fluorescence sensing various contaminants in water

Luminescent coordination polymers (LCPs) have garnered significant attention from researchers as promising materials for detecting contaminants. In this paper, three new LCPs ([Zn(tib)(opda)]n⋅H2O (1), [Zn3(tib)2(mpda)3]n⋅5H2O (2), [Zn (tib)(ppda)]n⋅H2O (3)) with different structures (LCP 1-3: 1D, 2D, 1D) using phenylenediacetic acid isomers and 1,3,5-tris (1-imidazolyl) benzene (tib) are synthesized. The specific surface areas (BET) of LCP 1-3 are 4 m2/g, 19 m2/g, and 13 m2/g respectively. LCP 1-3 exhibit excellent fluorescence properties and can serve as fluorescent probe for the detection of inorganic contaminants and organic contaminants. Due to the large BET of LCP 2, the detection limits for trace analytes surpass those of LCP 1 and 3. The detection limits of LCP 2 for Fe3+, nitrobenzene (NB), chloramphenicol (CAP), and pyrimethanil (PTH) are 8.3 nM, 0.016 μM, 0.19 μM, and 0.032 μM, respectively, and the fluorescence quenching rates are 98.6 %, 98.8 %, 92.3 %, and 98.8 %, respectively. These values outperform most reported in the literature. The quantum yields of LCP 1-3 are 11.84 %, 25.22 %, 22.00 % respectively. Real sample testing of LCP 1-3 reveals favorable performance, where spiked recoveries of LCP 2 for the detection of pyrimethanil in grape skins ranged from 99.62 % to 119.3 % with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.627 % to 4.56 % (n = 3). The fluorescence quenching mechanism was attributed to a combination of photoelectron transfer (PET), resonance energy transfer (RET), and competitive absorption (CA). This study advances the application of LCPs in luminescence sensing and contributes to the expansion of novel materials for detecting environmental pollutants.

Metal element-based adsorbents for phosphorus capture: Chaperone effect, performance and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus (P) enters the water bodies via wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff, triggering serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. In contrast, P as an irreplaceable key resource, presents notable supply-demand contradictions due to ineffective recovery mechanisms. Hence, constructing a system that simultaneously reduce P contaminants and effective recycling has profound theoretical and practical implications. Metal element-based adsorbents, including metal (hydro) oxides, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), exhibit a significant chaperone effect stemming from strong orbital hybridization between their intrinsic Lewis acid sites and P (Lewis base). This review aims to parse the structure-effect relationship between metal element-based adsorbents and P, and explores how to optimize the P removal properties. Special emphasis is given to the formation of the metal-P chemical bond, which not only depends on the type of metal in the adsorbent but also closely relates to its surface activity and pore structure. Then, we delve into the intrinsic mechanisms behind these adsorbents' remarkable adsorption capacity and precise targeting. Finally, we offer an insightful discussion of the prospects and challenges of metal element-based adsorbents in terms of precise material control, large-scale production, P-directed adsorption and effective utilization.

La-MOFs in situ loaded Al2O3 particles for effective removal of phosphate in water: characterization, application potential analysis, and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus in water would cause eutrophication and deterioration of the ecological environment. Herein, the La-MOFs/Al2O3 composite was successfully prepared by the in situ hydrothermal synthesis method for granulation, which was conducive to exerting the phosphate adsorption capacity and facilitating practical application. The materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, FTIR, and Zeta. In addition, the adsorption performance of La-MOFs/Al2O3 was evaluated through adsorption kinetics and isotherms, showing that the Langmuir adsorption capacity was 16.34 mgP·g-1 (25 °C) and increased with the water temperature. Moreover, the batch influence experiments of intimal pH, adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions, and stability tests were performed to analyze the potential for practical applications and verified through the natural micro-polluted water samples from Houxi River and Bailu Lake (China). The results indicated that the La-MOFs/Al2O3 was suited to a wide pH range of 4 to 10 and the phosphate removal efficiency remained above 70% after continuous use for four times, exhibiting excellent stability. It also had excellent selectivity in the presence of SO42-, Cl-, NO3-, and HCO3-, only decreased to 70.24% at high HCO3- ion concentration of 60 mg/L, respectively. And the La-MOFs/Al2O3 had excellent adsorption of total phosphorus, phosphate, and organic phosphorus in the actual river and lake water and completely removed dissolved phosphorus. Finally, a phosphate adsorption mechanism model involved in electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange was proposed. Therefore, La-MOFs/Al2O3 could be considered to be an excellent phosphorus adsorbent for application in the actual water environmental remediation.

Polymer-based nanocomposite adsorbents for resource recovery from wastewater

Developing mitigation mechanisms for eutrophication caused by the uncontrolled release of nutrients is in the interest of the scientific community. Adsorption, being operationally simple and economical with no significant secondary pollution, has proven to be a feasible technology for resource recovery. However, the utility of adsorption often lies in the availability of effective adsorbents. In this regard, polymer-based nanocomposite (PNC) adsorbents have been highly acclaimed by researchers because of their high surface area, multiple functional groups, biodegradability, and ease of large-scale production. This review paper elaborates on the functionality, adsorption mechanisms, and factors that affect the adsorption and adsorption-desorption cycles of PNC adsorbents toward nutrient resources. Moreover, this review gives insight into the application of recovered nutrient resources in soil amendment.

Phosphate adsorption by metal organic frameworks: Insights from a systematic review, meta-analysis, and predictive modelling with artificial neural networks

This comprehensive study analysed 55 articles published between 2011 and 2022 on the use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for phosphate adsorption. The study found that the performance of MOFs in phosphate adsorption is influenced by various factors such as the type of MOF, synthesis method, modification/alteration, and operational conditions (initial concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, and temperature). Most of the MOFs have a wide range of theoretical maximum adsorption capacity for phosphate, but their long-term use in phosphorus recovery may be limited due to the adsorption mechanisms being dominated by inner sphere complexation. The study employed machine learning to construct artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting phosphate adsorption capacity based on input features from operation and synthesis procedures. The initial phosphate concentration was the most important input from the operational features, while the modulator agent was consistently relevant during MOF synthesis. The models showed strong fitting for most MOF types recorded for the study, such as UIO-66, MIL-100, ZIF-8, Al-MOFs, La-MOFs, and Ce-MOFs. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the design of MOF adsorbents for phosphate adsorption and offers guidance for future research in this area.

Resin-based iron-manganese binary oxide for phosphate selective removal

Adsorption technology can effectively remove phosphorus from water and realize phosphorus recovery. Hence, it is used to curb the eutrophication of water and alleviate the crisis caused by the shortage of phosphorus resources. Resin has been attracting increasing interest as an ideal adsorption material; however, its practical application is greatly affected by environmental factors. To solve the competitive adsorption and pore blockage caused by humic acid and coexisting ions during the removal of phosphorus by ion-exchange resin, this study has developed an iron-manganese oxide-modified resin composite adsorbent (Fe/Mn-402) based on the nanoconfinement theory. The structural characterization results of XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and XPS showed that the iron-manganese binary oxide was successfully loaded on the skeleton of the strongly alkaline anion resin and showed good stability under both neutral and alkaline conditions. The batch adsorption experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Fe/Mn-402 for phosphorus can reach up to 50.97 mg g^-1 under the optimal raw material ratio (Fe:Mn = 1:1). In addition, Fe/Mn-402 shows good selectivity for phosphorus removal. Fe/Mn-402 can maintain good adsorption performance for phosphate even under high concentrations of SO₄^2-, HCO₃^-, and humic acid. The regenerated Fe/Mn-402 can be recycled without any obvious change in its treatment capacity. Hence, it is suitable for stable, long-term usage. In general, this work puts forward a new idea for the development of phosphorus-removal adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater containing coexisting ions and HA.

Polymer-based nanocomposite adsorbents for resource recovery from wastewater

Adsorption is alternative technique for recovery of nutrient resources with no/less secondary pollution. PNC adsorbents are effective for removal and recovery of nutrient resources, and reusing nutrients as fertilizer could prevent eutrophication.

Synthesis of K+ and Na+ Synthetic Sodalite Phases by Low-Temperature Alkali Fusion of Kaolinite for Effective Remediation of Phosphate Ions: The Impact of the Alkali Ions and Realistic Studies

Two sodalite phases (potassium sodalite (K.SD) and sodium sodalite (Na.SD)) were prepared using alkali fusion of kaolinite followed by a hydrothermal treatment step for 4 h at 90 °C. The synthetic phases were characterized as potential adsorbents for PO43− from the aqueous solutions and real water from the Rákos stream (0.52 mg/L) taking into consideration the impact of the structural alkali ions (K+ and Na+). The synthetic Na.SD phase exhibited enhanced surface area (232.4 m2/g) and ion-exchange capacity (126.4 meq/100 g) as compared to the K.SD phase. Moreover, the Na.SD phase exhibited higher PO43− sequestration capacity (Qmax = 261.6 mg g−1 and Qsat = 175.3 mg g−1) than K.SD phase (Qmax = 201.9 mg g−1 and Qsat = 127.4 mg g−1). The PO43− sequestration processes of both Na.SD and K.SD are spontaneous, homogenous, and exothermic reactions that follow the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetics. Estimation of the occupied active site density validates the enrichment of the Na.SD phase with high quantities of active sites (Nm = 86.1 mg g−1) as compared to K.SD particles (Nm = 44.4 mg g−1). Moreover, the sequestration and Gaussian energies validate the cooperation of physisorption and weak chemisorption processes including zeolitic ion exchange reactions. Both Na.SD and K.SD exhibit significant selectivity for PO43− in the coexisting of other common anions (Cl−, SO42−, HCO3−, and NO3−) and strong stability properties. Their realistic application results in the complete adsorption of PO43- from Rákos stream water after 20 min (Na. SD) and 60 min (K.SD).

Biobased hydrogels and their composite containing MgMOF74 for the removal of textile dyes and wastewater treatment

In this work, we report the synthesis of a biobased hydrogel comprised of collagen, chitosan, and polyurethane for the removal of textile dyes. The adsorption capacity of this hydrogel was improved by adding a magnesium metal-organic framework to the semi-interpenetrating polymer matrix yielding a composite hydrogel. Removal of Bismarck Brown and Congo red was studied, and the experimental results fit Freundlich's model. Both hydrogel formulations were tested for the removal of textiles dyes from wastewaters. The magnesium-metal organic framework improved the efficiency of the biobased hydrogel for the removal of direct and mordant dyes reaching up to 89 ± 2%. The composite hydrogel was tested for the removal of Congo Red in a fixed bed column observing the breakthrough point after 168 min. Also, a flocculant material was prepared from collagen and chitosan and was tested for the removal of direct red dye from wastewater removing up to 80 ± 1%. The pretreated wastewater by coagulation-flocculation was treated by adsorption yielding a global removal efficiency of 99%. Finally, the studied hydrogels are potentially biodegradable being completely degraded by the proteolytic action after 22 days. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Composite hydrogels of collagen, chitosan, and MgMOF74 removed efficiently textile dyes from wastewater in batch systems and fixed bed columns. A biobased flocculant of collagen and chitosan significantly improved water quality after coagulation flocculation. Hydrogels were reusable for four cycles, and they can be proteolytically degraded after 22 days.

A Novel Conjugate Mechanism for Enhancing the Adsorption Capacity of Amine-Functionalized Activated Rice Husk Ash for Simultaneous Removal of Organics and Anions in Wastewater: Experimental and Theoretical Explanations

In this study, amine-functionalized rice husk ash (TRI-ARHA) was prepared and successfully applied as a multipurpose adsorbent for simultaneous removal of organics (i.e., methyl orange, MO), nitrate, and phosphate in wastewater with adsorption capacities of around 16.6 mgMO/g, 32.9 mgNO₃ ^--N/g, and 13.4 mgPO₄ ^3--P/g. These capacities were superior to those of the other commercially available materials such as activated carbon and ion-exchange resins in both individual and multipollutant adsorption experiments. In addition, the simultaneous adsorption of three components gives a higher adsorption capacity than individual adsorption for each anion (e.g., 1.18 times for nitrate and 1.11 times for phosphate). A conjugated adsorption mechanism may occur on the surface of the TRI-ARHA material, which can be ascribed to the amine groups in the MO molecule that are further activated by H⁺ (released from the surface amine groups) or Na⁺ ions (present in the solution), to form new adsorption centers for nitrate and phosphate. The integration process of H⁺ and Na⁺ to the nitrogen positions of MO was also studied by computational chemistry with the basis set of B3LYP/6-32G* calculated by Gaussian 16 software. The application in the treatment of real wastewaters proved that the TRI-ARHA material was more advantageous for multipollutant removal than other materials, thanks to its conjugated adsorption mechanism.

A new three-dimensional zinc(II) metal-organic framework as a fluorescence sensor for sensing the biomarker 3-nitrotyrosine

3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT), an oxidative stress biomarker, is closely associated with various diseases. Thus, rapid and sensitive detection of 3-NT is of great significance for preventing and treating diseases. Herein, we reported a new 3D zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) [Zn(L)(HBTC)] (L = (E)-4,4'-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis[(N-pyridin-3-yl)benzamide], H₃BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), which was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, PXRD and TG. The Zn-MOF can be used as a highly efficient fluorescence sensing material to provide a direct and low-cost method for the rapid detection of 3-NT and shows high sensitivity with a K_SV value of 6.596 × 10⁴ M^-1, a rapid luminescence response within 24 s, excellent selectivity, high anti-interference ability and good recyclability. It is the first example of a MOF being used to directly detect 3-NT as a luminescence sensor to our knowledge. The sensing mechanism of the Zn-MOF towards 3-NT is discussed in detail, which provides a basis for the rational design of MOF sensing materials and their application in biomarker detection.

Technical advances on current research trends and explore the future scope on nutrient recovery from waste-streams: a review and bibliometric analysis from 2000 to 2020

An exponentially growing global population has led to an increase in nutrient pollution in different aqueous bodies. Although different processes have successfully removed nutrients from wastewater on a large scale, a limited number of studies have been reported on efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and future potential of physical, chemical, and biological nutrient recovery methods to overcome the depletion of natural resources. Therefore, researchers need to understand current research trends by applying different approaches to investigate higher efficient nutrient recovery technologies. In this article, the research patterns and in-depth review of various nutrient recovery processes have been circumscribed with the application of bibliometric and attractive index (AAI) vs. activity index (AI) analysis. The performance, advantages, limitations, and future prospects of different nutrient recovery methods have also been addressed. More than 70% of study publications were published in the last decade in chemical and biological processes, which might be related to more rigorous effluent quality rules and increasing water pollution. The future prediction in the field of nutrient recovery has been predicted using S-curve analysis, and it was found that the number of publications in the saturated state in chemical methods was highest. However, the growth rate of the biological-based nutrient recovery methods is greater, which may be because of their huge research scope, cost-effectiveness, and easy operation methods. This study can assist researchers in understanding the current research scenario in nutrient recovery techniques and provide the research scope in nutrient recovery from wastewater in the future.

Improvement of the fluorescent sensing biomarker 3-nitrotyrosine for a new luminescent coordination polymer by size regulation

A new 3D luminescent coordination polymer (LCP) 1 was synthesized for detecting biomarker 3-nitrotyrosine. By adjusting the reaction conditions, Nano-LCP 1 was synthesized, which has a more lower detection limit compared with LCP 1.
