Dynamic vessel adaptation in synthetic arteriovenous networks

Collective guiding of acoustically propelled nano- and microparticles

One of the most important potential applications of motile nano- and microdevices is targeted drug delivery. To realize this, biocompatible particles that can be guided collectively towards a target inside a patient's body are required. Acoustically propelled nano- and microparticles constitute a promising candidate for such biocompatible, artificial motile particles. The main remaining obstacle to targeted drug delivery by motile nano- and microdevices is to also achieve a reliable and biocompatible method for guiding them collectively to their target. Here, we propose such a method. As we confirm by computer simulations, it allows for the remote guiding of large numbers of acoustically propelled particles to a prescribed target by combining a space- and time-dependent acoustic field and a time-dependent magnetic field. The method works without detailed knowledge about the particle positions and for arbitrary initial particle distributions. With these features, it paves the way for the future application of motile particles as vehicles for targeted drug delivery in nanomedicine.

Vessel-on-a-chip models for studying microvascular physiology, transport, and function in vitro

To understand how the microvasculature grows and remodels, researchers require reproducible systems that emulate the function of living tissue. Innovative contributions toward fulfilling this important need have been made by engineered microvessels assembled in vitro with microfabrication techniques. Microfabricated vessels, commonly referred to as "vessels-on-a-chip," are from a class of cell culture technologies that uniquely integrate microscale flow phenomena, tissue-level biomolecular transport, cell-cell interactions, and proper three-dimensional (3-D) extracellular matrix environments under well-defined culture conditions. Here, we discuss the enabling attributes of microfabricated vessels that make these models more physiological compared with established cell culture techniques and the potential of these models for advancing microvascular research. This review highlights the key features of microvascular transport and physiology, critically discusses the strengths and limitations of different microfabrication strategies for studying the microvasculature, and provides a perspective on current challenges and future opportunities for vessel-on-a-chip models.

On deriving Murray's law from constrained minimization of flow resistance

Murray's law, which states that the cube of the radius of a parent vessel equals the sum of the cubes of the radii of the daughter vessels, was originally derived by minimizing the cost of operation of blood flow in a single cylindrical tube. An alternative widely cited derivation by Sherman is based upon the optimization problem of minimizing the total flow resistance subject to a material constraint, and that study claimed that "Conservation of the sum of the cubes of the radii is the condition for minimal resistance whether the parent vessel divides symmetrically or asymmetrically, and whether it divides into two, three, four, or, presumably, any number of daughter vessels." In this paper we show that Sherman's analysis is flawed, since with N daughter vessels there are 2^N-N-1 sets of vessel radii which satisfy Murray's law but which do not yield minimal total flow resistance. Moreover, we show that when there are N daughter vessels, each with the same radius, the minimal total flow resistance is an increasing function of N for N⩾1. Since N=1 corresponds to the degenerate case of no branching at all, our result implies that bifurcation (N=2) achieves the minimal total flow resistance. Our analysis thus offers an explanation for the preponderance of bifurcations (as opposed to trifurcations or higher level branchings) in many biological systems.
