Abstract
An ultrasound-assisted, one-pot cloud point extraction was developed for the determination of iron in vegetable samples by UV-Visible spectrophotometry. This method was based on the complexation of iron with an environmentally-friendly natural chelating agent extracted from Dipterocarpus intricatus Dyer fruit at pH 5.5 in the presence of Triton X-114. Reagent extraction, complexation, and preconcentration were performed simultaneously using ultrasound-assisted extraction at 45 °C. The surfactant-rich phase was diluted with ethanol and loaded through a syringe barrel packed with cotton that acted as a filter to trap the reagent powder. Analyte-entrapped on cotton was eluted using 0.1 mol·L-1 nitric acid solution. Filtrate and eluate solutions were measured absorbance of the dark-blue product at 575 nm. Influential parameters for the procedure were investigated. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the calibration curve was linear, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mg·L-1 with r2 = 0.997. Limits of detection and quantification were 0.03 and 0.09 mg·L-1, respectively while precision values of intra-day and inter-day were less than 5%. Recovery at 0.5 mg·L-1 ranged from 89.0 to 99.8%, while iron content in vegetable samples ranged from 2.45 to 13.36 mg/100 g. This method was cost-effective, reliable, eco-friendly, and convenient as a green analytical approach to determining iron content.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-resolution continuum source AAS is an emerging technique for the determination of trace elements in clinical analysis. We aimed to develop a method for the direct determination of platinum (Pt) in pleural effusions that could deepen the understanding of the dynamics of intrapleural Pt concentration during cytostatic therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Samples were collected by thoracic drainage from five patients with lung cancer undergoing platinum based chemotherapy. A simple dilute-and-shoot method for Pt determination in the pleural effusions was developed. Ashing of the sample in an oxygen flow in a graphite tube allowed for direct analysis without prior mineralization. The trueness of the method was verified using an independent technique (ICP-MS). As platinum derivatives are only active in its free form (not bound to proteins), Pt in samples was further divided into free and protein-bound forms by means of ultrafiltration. RESULTS Using the proposed method, Pt contents (free and total) were determined in samples collected at different times after the intravenous application of the Pt derivative. The concentration of total Pt reached values of up to 5,000 μg/L and different patterns of its dynamics in intrapleural fluid were observed. CONCLUSIONS The developed method enables the fast and simple determination of Pt in biological fluids. It may be applied on a large scale to improve the understanding of Pt dynamics during cytostatic therapy, and also to determine the optimal timing of both thoracic drainage and administration of systemic chemotherapy.

Abstract
Background:
Platinum derivatives including cisplatin and its later generations carboplatin, and oxaliplatin remain the most largely used drugs in the therapy of malignant diseases. They exert notable anticancer activity towards numerous types of solid tumors such as gastric, colorectal, bladder, ovary, and several others. The chemotherapeutic activity of these compounds, however, is associated with many unwanted side effects and drug resistance problems limiting their application and effectiveness. Proper dosage is still an inherent problem, as these drugs are usually prescribed in small doses.
Objective:
Several analytical methods have been reported for the accurate quantification of cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin and their metabolites either alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs, in different matrices such as pharmaceutical formulations, biological fluids, cancer cells, and environmental samples. The main goal of this review is to systematically study the analytical methods already used for the analysis of cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin in various matrices during the last two decades.
Results and Conclusion:
In the literature, reviews showed that numerous analytical methods such as electroanalytical, UV-visible spectrophotometry, chromatographic, fluorescence, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and other spectroscopic methods combined with mass spectrometry were used for the determination of these compounds in various matrices.

Abstract
Improving efficacy and lowering resistance to metal-based drugs can be addressed by consideration of the coordination complex speciation and key reactions important to vanadium antidiabetic drugs or platinum anticancer drugs under biological conditions. The methods of analyses vary depending on the specific metal ion chemistry. The vanadium compounds interconvert readily, whereas the reactions of the platinum compounds are much slower and thus much easier to study. However, the vanadium species are readily differentiated due to vanadium complexes differing in color. For both vanadium and platinum systems, understanding the processes as the compounds, Lipoplatin and Satraplatin, enter cells is needed to better combat the disease; there are many cellular metabolites, which may affect processing and thus the efficacy of the drugs. Examples of two formulations of platinum compounds illustrate how changing the chemistry of the platinum will result in less toxic and better tolerated drugs. The consequence of the much lower toxicity of the drug, can be readily realized because cisplatin administration requires hospital stay whereas Lipoplatin can be done in an outpatient manner. Similarly, the properties of Satraplatin allow for development of an oral drug. These forms of platinum demonstrate that the direct consequence of more selective speciation is lower side effects and cheaper administration of the anticancer agent. Therefore we urge that as the community goes forward in development of new drugs, control of speciation chemistry will be considered as one of the key strategies in the future development of anticancer drugs.

Abstract
A preconcentration procedure for heavy metal ions in biological and water samples has been presented. The procedure is based on the sorption of Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ on cellulose nanoparticles modified with folic acid. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and BET measurements. Potentiometric titration is used to prove the complexation between metal ions and the modified cellulose as well as to calculate the cation-exchange capacity of the sorbent. The influences of the analytical parameters including pH, amount of adsorbent, shaking time, temperature, conditions of desorption, and the effects of matrix ions were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ were linear in the range of 2.7–200, 0.5–50, 0.37–150, and 10–300 μg L−1, respectively. The detection limits (3s, n = 10) for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ were 0.81, 0.15, 0.11, and 3.9 μg L−1, respectively. The proposed method offers a preconcentration factor of 200 for all of the ions studied and an enhancement factor for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ of 40.0, 30.8, 40.4, and 34.2, respectively. The accuracy of the suggested method was tested by analyzing spiked samples. The method was successfully applied to the determination of these metal ions in water and blood samples.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) level in blood and urine of soldering iron workers (n=49) and 41 matched healthy controls has been assessed. Cloud point extraction was employed for preconcentration of Cd. The Cd ions formed hydrophobic complex with 9,10-phenanthraquinone monoethyl thiosemicarbazone that was extracted by surfactant-rich phases in the nonionic surfactant Triton X-114. The surfactant-rich phase was diluted with 1 M HNO3 in methanol prior to its analysis by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the proposed method, such as solution pH, amount of complexing agent, surfactant concentration, temperature, and incubation time, were optimized. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the detection limit and the enrichment factor were 0.04 μg L(-1) and 61, respectively. Relative standard deviation of 10 μg L(-1) Cd was less than 3.0%. The accuracy of the method was examined by analysis of certified reference materials. It was observed that soldering iron workers are liable to Cd overload as indicated by higher levels of Cd in blood and urine when compared with the controls. This exposure may lead to kidney damage indicated by elevation of urinary excretion of both N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and β2-microglobulin.
