Abstract
The triathlon is a demanding endurance multisport, which may strongly affect the nutritional status of athletes. The aim of this study was to find whether there are any differences in energy value and nutrient intake, body mass and body composition, aerobic performance and hair mineral status between training and competition periods and to assess whether there is a link between hair mineral content and physical capacity and nutrition. This observational study covered 20 triathletes aged 32 ± 7 years. The results of our study indicated performance improvement during the competition period (longer time to exhaustion (p = 0.025) and lower maximal oxygen uptake at the ventilatory threshold (%VO2max_VT; p = 0.047)). However, no differences were recorded in nutrition and body composition between two training vs. competition periods. There was a significant depletion in hair iron content during the competition period (p = 0.010). Furthermore, there were significant relationships between hair calcium content and absolute maximal oxygen uptake and %VO2max_VT during the training period. It is necessary to introduce nutritional education in the group of triathletes focused on exercise-oriented nutritional periodization following the requirements of the training and competition periods, thus preventing the risk of nutrient deficiencies.

Abstract
Exercise may induce many changes in biochemical parameters of the saliva. Thanks to non-invasive access, saliva can be used as a diagnostic material in physical activity monitoring. The aim of the study was comparison of selected salivary components in swimmers before and after training session. 40 male subjects aged 12–15, out of whom 30 were competitive swimmers and 10 control were involved in the study. Salivary samples were collected from all subjects in the morning, and in the afternoon; from the swimmers, they were also collected before and after the workout. Salivary flow rate-V, pH, total protein-P, alpha-amylase-Amy, salivary peroxidase-SPO, cortisol-C, total antioxidant status-TAS, sialic acid (free-FSA, bound-GSA, total-TSA), calcium-Ca, magnesium-Mg were measured. The swimmers assessed the workout intensity of training session using the RPE Foster’s scale. The circadian rhythm pattern of some salivary components and differences after training were found. In swimmers after the morning exercise significant increase of P (0.83 ± 0.27 vs. 1.10 ± 0.58 g/L), Amy (64.91 ± 70.86 vs. 87.07 ± 92.46IU/L), Ca (3.83 ± 1.33 vs. 4.99 ± 2.24 mg/L), Mg (0.52 ± 0.32 vs. 0.73 ± 0.34 mg/L), TAS (0.64 ± 0.27 vs. 0.72 ± 0.26 mmol/L) and decrease V (0.47 ± 0.37 vs. 0.36 ± 0.22 mg/min), C (5.86 ± 5.00 vs. 3.54 ± 5.07 μg/ml) were found. After the afternoon training significant increase of pH (7.13 ± 0.33 vs. 7.27 ± 0.24), Amy (111.53 ± 120.13 vs. 130.91 ± 161.14IU/L), Ca (3.72 ± 1.34 vs. 4.61 ± 1.58 mg/L), Mg (0.48 ± 0.28 vs. 0.60 ± 0.39 mg/L), TSA (5.64 ± 3.78 vs. 6.10 ± 3.08 mg/L), GSA (3.00 ± 3.06 vs. 3.38 ± 2.26 mg/L), and decrease of V (0.63 ± 0.63 vs. 0.49 ± 0.39 ml/min) were noticed. Before training in the morning in the swimmers significantly higher of V (0.47 ± 0.37 vs. 0.26 ± 0.15 mg/min), TAS (0.64 ± 0.27 vs. 0.40 ± 0.16 mmol/L), and lower pH (7.01 ± 0.46 vs. 7.53 ± 0.33), P (0.83 ± 0.27 vs. 1.86 ± 1.28 g/L), Amy (64.91 ± 70.86 vs. 146.56 ± 114.45IU/L) compared to the control were found. In the afternoon in swimmers before training session significantly lower pH (7.13 ± 0.33 vs. 7.53 ± 0.49) and Amy (111.53 ± 120.13 vs. 170.98 ± 107.72IU/L) in comparison to the control were noticed. The RPE scores were negatively correlated with V (rho = −0.500, p = 0.05 and pH (rho = −0.382, p = 0.03) measured after the morning session and after the afternoon training with V (rho = −0.570, p = 0.01) and Ca (rho = −0.401, p = 0.08). The levels of salivary flow rate, alpha amylase, cortisol, calcium, magnesium were associated with swimming training session, and showed circadian variation without a significant effect on their responses to exercise.

Abstract
This study evaluates the influence on body development of doing rhythmic gymnastics in girls from 10 to 17 years of age, the results of certain strength and flexibility abilities, and the trace element status (Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni). The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) girls who practiced rhythmic gymnastics at a competition level (competition group); (b) girls who practiced this sport at a non-competitive level (training group); and (c) girls who do not practice any sport and with a low level of physical activity (control or sedentary group). Trace element status was determined in hair and urine samples. Results showed that doing rhythmic gymnastics does not alter the normal physical development of muscle mass, and even leads to a decrease in body fat content. Furthermore, better scores in the strength and flexibility test were obtained by the participants of this sports discipline. Statistically significant differences in urine Fe, Cu, and Mn values (p < 0.05) and in hair Cr, Cu, and Mn values (p < 0.05) were found between the two rhythmic gymnastics groups and the control group, and were higher in the competition and training groups. A principal component analysis model was performed to evaluate the possibility of cluster formation among the girls. The PCA results revealed a separation between the different groups although the separation was not perfect. PLS-DA was attempted in order to verify whether it was possible to discriminate between the groups included in this study. It was clear that the competition and control ones were very well classified (around 95% of correct predictions) but 20% of the girls belonging to the training group were misclassified as belonging to the competition one.

Abstract
Monitoring of health status and metabolism of dairy cows is essential for modern milk production. At the current level of productivity of dairy cows, in addition to essential elements, increasing attention must be paid to controlling the exchange of toxic elements, a significant number of which belong to the category of heavy metals. In this regard, the objective of our research was to study the relationship of pools of heavy metals in the body of dairy cows, evaluated according to hair composition and elemental composition of blood serum and milk productivity of animals. Assessment of trace element content in the samples was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fat and protein content in milk was assessed by the FIL-IDF procedure. In order to assess the metabolic load of chemical elements in body of cows, the coefficient of total load Cload was calculated. It allowed us to divide all animals into three groups. Assessment of the content of 25 chemical elements in hair of cows revealed a general regularity of increase in average statistical values of concentrations of some elements with increasing load from 6.9 in group I to 10.7 in group II and 15.8 in group III. As Cload grew from 10.7 in group II to 15.8 in group III, the content of 20 chemical elements in the coat of animals from group III exceeded that in group II. Exceptions were only Ca, K, P, Se, and As. Thus, the productivity of dairy cows turned out to be interconnected not so much with the level of heavy metals (9 elements), but with a wider list of 20-23 chemical elements. Thus, the optimal course of metabolic processes in animal organism, coupled with the highest productivity, is possible when the internal environment of body is saturated with a certain amount of chemical elements. Accordingly, a lack or excess of these substances will be associated with a decrease in the efficiency of metabolism and animal productivity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the levels of 8 microelements (Zn, Fe, Cu, Ca, Mn, Mg, Cd, Pb) and the health status test of 184 female nursing students at a college in Zhaoqing, China, and to get the relevant data of nursing students in a Zhaoqing University. The relationship between microelements and physical health status was investigated. There were significant differences in the levels of Ca, Mg, Mn, and Pb between grade 1 and grade 2 students (all, P < 0.01). In grade 1 students, Mn level was negatively correlated with height (P = 0.006, rs = - 0.283) and was significantly positively correlated with 1-min sit-ups (P = 0.010, rs = 0.268). Cd level was positively correlated with 50 m sprint time (P = 0.023, rs = 0.237). In grade 2 students, Mn level was negatively correlated with 1-min sit-ups (P = 0.016, rs = - 0.250), Fe level was positively correlated with 800 m running time (P = 0.036, rs = 0.219), Zn level was positively correlated with 50 m sprint time (P = 0.050, rs = 0.205), and Cd level was negatively correlated with sit and reach (P = 0.020, rs = - 0.239). Microelement levels have certain effects on the physical health status of female nursing students. Among them, Zn, Fe, and Mg have the most significant effect.

Abstract
The study was conducted on a model of dairy cows of the Holstein breed. At the first stage of research, the elemental composition of cow hair was studied (n = 198). Based on this study, the percentile intervals of chemical elements concentrations in hair were established; values of 25 and 75 percentiles were determined, and they were considered as "physiological standard." At the second stage, the elemental composition of hair from the upper part of withers of highly productive Holstein cows during the period of increasing milk yield was analyzed (n = 47). The elemental composition of biological substrates was studied according to 25 indicators, using the methods of atomic emission and mass spectrometry (AES-ICP and MS-ICP). An assessment of productivity parameters of cows depending on the level of toxic elements in hair revealed a negative statistically significant relationship with the level of lead. Lead content in hair was negatively correlated with the yield of fat (r = - 0.50), protein (r = - 0.37), and dry matter (r = - 0.48) in milk. Based on these data, cows were divided into three groups: group I, with Pb concentration in hair 0.0245-0.0449 mg/g, group II-between 0.0495 and 0.141 mg/kg, and in group III-between 0.145 and 0.247 mg/g. It was established that increasing Pb content decreases daily production of milk fat by 18.8 (P ≤ 0.05) and 25.3% (P ≤ 0.05), protein by 9.7 (P ≤ 0.05) and 10.7% (P ≤ 0.05), and dry matter by 8.0 and 13.0% (P ≤ 0.05) in cows. Average daily milk yield, adjusted for 1% of fat, decreased by 19.2 (P ≤ 0.05) and 25.3% (P ≤ 0.05), respectively. As the concentration of lead in hair increased, the content of toxic elements (Al, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sn, Sr) increased from 0.07 to 0.235 mmol/kg in group I, in group II from 0.082 to 0.266 mmol/kg, and in group III-from 0.126 to 0.337 mmol/kg. It was concluded that it is necessary to further study the use of physiological standard indicators of the content of toxic chemical elements in hair of dairy cows to increase productivity and maintain animal health and to create an effective system of individual health monitoring of highly productive cattle.

Abstract
The existence of sports anemia, induced by strenuous or long-term exercise and characterized by decreases of red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin and iron content, remains to be doubtful. To observe the effects of endurance exercise on RBCs and explain the underlying reason, we designed this study by observing RBCs parameters and iron metabolism in 8-weeks training rats and effects of iron supplement or protein supplement on RBCs. Results showed that erythrocyte counts, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume and hemoglobin content decreased while RBC distribution width increased in exercised rats at later stage during 8 weeks training. But the contents of serum iron and ferritin decreased only at 1-week and 2-week and returned to normal at 4-week and 8-week. Same as iron content, apparent iron absorption rate was declined at early stage but restored to normal level at 8-week, as well as serum adrenaline, cortisol and insulin levels. Instead, the contents of total protein and albumin in serum were decreased at later stage during 8-weeks training. Furthermore, we observed that protein supplement ameliorated RBCs parameters in rats exposed to 8 weeks swimming exercise, but iron supplement had no effects on RBCs, though it obviously increased iron content of serum and the liver. Based on these results, we drew a conclusion that transient changes of iron metabolism, which may be induced by stress hormone changes, was not the reason for RBCs decrease in endurance exercises but hemoglobin reduction, induced by defects in protein supplement, impeded development of RBCs.

Abstract
In this work, an analytical method for bromine and iodine determination in human saliva was proposed. A simple protocol based on centrifugation and direct analysis of supernatant by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was investigated. Although this method was feasible for bromine determination, iodine was partially present in the supernatant and an agreement about 54% with reference value was obtained. In addition, microwave-induced combustion (MIC) and microwave-assisted dissolution were also evaluated. Using MIC, 0.2 mL of saliva added on 300 mg of microcrystalline cellulose were efficiently digested. A diluted solution (50 mmol L-1 NH4OH) was used for analytes absorption, and a reflux step of 5 min was applied to ensure quantitative recoveries of Br and I. Accuracy was evaluated by analyte recovery experiments, and recoveries between 94% and 98% were obtained. Microwave-assisted dissolution was evaluated for 2.0 mL of saliva using also a diluted alkaline solution (25 mmol L-1 NH4OH) and a microwave irradiation program of 35 min (including the cooling step). Results for this method agreed with those obtained using MIC. Although MIC has also been appropriated for further determination of Br and I in saliva, microwave-assisted dissolution can be considered a simpler sample preparation method and it was effective for high amount of sample (up to 2.0 mL). Moreover, final solutions were compatible with ICP-MS analysis, allowing the quantification of Br and I in human saliva at ultra-trace concentrations (limits of quantification were 0.052 μg mL-1 for Br and 0.022 μg mL-1 for I).

Abstract
A study on the Russian trotting breeds was conducted to assess the impact of horses' sporting results and the degree of accumulation of chemical elements in the hair. In the first phase of the research, the elemental composition of the mane hair of trotter horses (n = 215) was studied. Based on these studies, percentile intervals for the distribution of concentrations of chemical elements in the hair have been established, and the values of 25 and 75 percentile adopted as a "physiological standard" have been defined. In the second stage of the research into clinically healthy Russian trotting breeds (n = 56), it was estimated that the sporting results were dependent on the elemental status defined by the hair. The elemental composition of the hair was defined by 25 chemical elements using atomic emission and mass spectrometry. It is established that the mane hair is closely related to the sporting results of trotter horses. Thus, in animal wool with the highest sporting achievements, there were reliably less I, Cr, Co, Li, V, Al, Pb, and Cd, and reliably more Si than the low ones. Differences in individual elements exceeded 200%. As sporting performance diminished, the number of elements within the standard increased. For example, for mares with average speed, there were deviations from the physiological standard by 6 elements (P, Fe, Mn, I, Co, Si), with the low one by 13 elements (P, Fe, Cu, Mn, I, Co, Si, K, Cr, Ni, V, Al, Pb). A comparative estimate of the mineralization of the horses' mane measured by the sum of the amount of substances showed that there was a negative correlation between the accumulation of toxic elements and the speed (r = - 0.59). On the basis of the above, a conclusion is reached on the future use of the mane hair to assess the speed qualities of trotter horses.
