A study on the inhibition of N80 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 by fruit extract of Gingko biloba

4-Phenylcoumarin (4-PC) Glucoside from Exostema caribaeum as Corrosion Inhibitor in 3% NaCl Saturated with CO2 in AISI 1018 Steel: Experimental and Theoretical Study

The corrosion inhibition of 5-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-7-methoxy-3′,4′-dihydroxy-4-phenylcoumarin (4-PC) in AISI 1018 steel immersed in 3% NaCl + CO₂ was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that, at just 10 ppm, 4-PC exerted protection against corrosion with ղ = 90% and 97% at 100 rpm. At static conditions, the polarization curves indicated that, at 5 ppm, the inhibitor presented anodic behavior, while at 10 and 50 ppm, there was a cathodic-type inhibitor. The inhibitor adsorption was demonstrated to be chemisorption, according to the Langmuir isotherm for 100 and 500 rpm. By means of SEM–EDS, the corrosion inhibition was demonstrated, as well as the fact that the organic compound was effective for up to 72 h of immersion. At static conditions, dispersion-corrected density functional theory results reveal that the chemical bonds established by the phenyl group of 4-PC are responsible of the chemisorption on the steel surface. According with Fukui reactivity indices, the molecules adsorbed on the metal surface provide a protective cover against nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks, pointing to the corrosion inhibition properties of 4-PC.

A Review of Recent Advances in the Inhibition of Sweet Corrosion

This review paper discusses the research work published in the last decade on the use of organic compounds and natural products as corrosion inhibitors for steel in CO₂ and CO₂ /H₂ S coexisting environments. The carbon and mild steel samples tested are mostly immersed in CO₂ -saturated NaCl/brine solutions or simulated oilfield waters. The influence of temperature, immersion time, CO₂ partial pressure, pre-corrosion, flow rate/rotation speed, and the synergistic effect of other compounds on the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of organic compounds and natural products is presented. Primarily, weight loss and electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of these compounds.

Electrochemical and Computational Insights on the Application of Expired Metformin Drug as a Novel Inhibitor for the Sweet Corrosion of C1018 Steel

An expired metformin drug (MET) was used as a corrosion inhibitor for C1018 carbon steel in a CO2-saturated 3.5 wt % NaCl + 340 ppm acetic acid solution under static conditions. The inhibitor was evaluated using electrochemical methods complemented with surface analytical measurements and computational modeling. The drug displayed a high inhibition efficiency of ∼90% at 200 ppm. Impedance analyses revealed a rise in the charge transfer resistance at the steel-solution interface upon the addition of the inhibitor. Polarization measurements suggested that MET acted more like a cathodic-type corrosion inhibitor and significantly reduced the corrosion current density. The adsorption of MET on the steel substrate followed the Langmuir isotherm, showing a mixed type of physical and chemical modes of adsorption. The thermodynamic parameters revealed strong and spontaneous adsorption on the steel surface. The surface analysis using SEM supported the inhibitor adsorption on the steel substrate. Based on the DFT simulation, inhibition by MET is mainly achieved by its protonated form, which leads to the formation of a thin film on the steel surface rather than the modification of the work function of the steel surface. The experimental and theoretical estimations of pKa complemented the DFT results, both agreeing that the monoprotonated form of MET is the dominant form in which the inhibitor adsorbs on the steel surface to form a thin film rather than modify the work function of the steel surface.

Synthesis, characterization, and anti-corrosion properties of an 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative

A new 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative, namely 1,3-bis(quinoline-8-dimethylformamide) propane (BQYP), was synthesized and characterized by different spectral methods, such as ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and FTIR spectra. The anticorrosive properties of the BQYP molecule against the corrosion of mild steel were tested in 2 M Η₂SO₄ acid with a varied range of concentrations (0.05–1 mM) at different temperatures using the electrochemical technique. It was clear that adsorption acted according to Langmuir's relationship. The inhibition effect improved with increases in concentration of inhibitor (~91% for 1 mM at 298 °K) and was reduced with increasing temperature. Finally, the density functional theory (DFT), with bases set according to the B3LYP/6-311+G (d,p) level, was used for calculating the quantum parameter to explain the effect of the electronic structure of the BQYP molecule on providing the experimental findings.

Comparative Evaluation of Anticorrosive Properties of Mahaleb Seed Extract on Carbon Steel in Two Acidic Solutions

Aqueous extract solution of Mahaleb seed (ASMS) was prepared using a simple and safe method. ASMS was tested to examine its potential to act as a green corrosion inhibitor for preventing the dissolution of Carbon steel in highly concentrated corrosive 2 M H₂SO₄ and 2 M H₃PO₄ using an electrochemical polarization Tafel plot and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. ASMS provided a slight increase in the inhibition efficiency of H₃PO₄ (89%) compared with H₂SO₄ (86%). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and electronic scanning microscopy (SEM) were used to prove that adsorption of ASMS occurred on the metal surface. The thermodynamic adsorption and thermodynamic activation parameters were calculated at a range of concentrations and temperatures. The physisorption of ASMS followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R² = 0.98). Finally, the role of ASMS as a protection mechanism was discussed.

Analyses of New Electrochemical Techniques to Study the Behavior of Some Corrosion Mitigating Polymers on N80 Tubing Steel

Two synthesized polymers were studied as potential corrosion inhibitors for N80 Steel in a sweet corrosive environment. Poly-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (PDMC), or P1, and poly-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone P(DMC-co-NVP), or P2, were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization technique, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP), and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). The surface was examined using contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy methods. Analyses of electrochemical and polarization techniques revealed a PDMC polymer with a better inhibition efficiency. The SECM, SKP, and SVET methods showed the insulating ability of the polymers that formed a protective coating on the metal surface.

Eco-friendly 2-Thiobarbituric acid as a corrosion inhibitor for API 5L X60 steel in simulated sweet oilfield environment: Electrochemical and surface analysis studies

The corrosion inhibition efficiency of 2-Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) for metal substrate (API X60 steel) in 3.5% NaCl solution saturated with CO₂ gas was probed using various techniques namely, LPR (linear polarization resistance), EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), and PDP (potentiodynamic polarization). The effects of TBA concentration (25–100 ppm), solution pH (4 and 6), temperature (25–80 °C), and immersion time (2–72 h) on the inhibition efficiency were examined. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and XPS (X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were deployed to explore the corrosion retardation mechanism. TBA exhibited protection efficiencies exceeding 90% for all experimental conditions considered. The excellent anticorrosion performance by TBA was retained up to 72 hours of immersion time. PDP results exhibited that TBA behaved as a mixed type inhibitor. Results from kinetics and thermodynamics analyses indicate that TBA chemically adsorbed on the steel surface following Langmuir isotherm model. The composition of the adsorbed TBA film has been analyzed by XPS.

SECM/SKP and SVET studies on mitigation of N80 steel corrosion by some polymers

Three polymers, namely PAMPS (P1), P(AMPS-co-NVP) (P2) and P(AMPS-co-DMC) (P3), synthesized by common solution polymerization were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in 3.5 wt% NaCl flooded with CO₂.

Heterocyclic Corrosion Inhibitors for J55 Steel in a Sweet Corrosive Medium

The inhibitory effect of two heterocyclic porphyrin compounds, specifically 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin palladium(II) (PF-1) and 4,4',4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid) (PF-2), was studied in a sweet corrosion environment (3.5 wt % NaCl + CO₂) on J55 steel by means of weight loss and electrochemical methods. Surface changes were studied using contact angle, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. It was established that PF-2 showed the superlative inhibition efficiency of average of about 93% at 400 ppm concentration. The inductive behavior of the J55 steel surface in the presence of inhibitors was confirmed by SECM. The AFM further confirmed that the surface roughness was considerably decreased in the presence of porphyrins. The surface wettability of the steel was also investigated, and the results established the formation of a water-repellant layer on the surface when porphyrins are absorbed and layer became more hydrophobic with PF-2. Thermodynamics studies showed that the inhibition efficiencies of two compounds evaluated by all measurements follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

An impending inhibitor useful for the oil and gas production industry: Weight loss, electrochemical, surface and quantum chemical calculation

The influence of a Schiff base namely N,N'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-(4-methoxyphenyl) methanimine) (PM) on the corrosion of J55 and N80 steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 was evaluated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Potentiodynamic polarization results suggested that the inhibitor acted as a mixed type inhibitor by reducing both anodic and cathodic reactions. The adsorption of PM on the J55 and N80 steel surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. XRD, contact angle, SEM, AFM and SECM studies revealed that the surface of the metal was quite unaffected after the addition of inhibitor. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic simulation support the experimental results well.

Porphyrins as Corrosion Inhibitors for N80 Steel in 3.5% NaCl Solution: Electrochemical, Quantum Chemical, QSAR and Monte Carlo Simulations Studies

The inhibition of the corrosion of N80 steel in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution saturated with CO₂ by four porphyrins, namely 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (HPTB), 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (T4PP), 4,4′,4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid) (THP) and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin (TPP) was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results showed that the inhibition efficiency, η% increases with increasing concentration of the inhibitors. The EIS results revealed that the N80 steel surface with adsorbed porphyrins exhibited non-ideal capacitive behaviour with reduced charge transfer activity. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicated that the studied porphyrins acted as mixed type inhibitors. The SECM results confirmed the adsorption of the porphyrins on N80 steel thereby forming a relatively insulated surface. The SEM also confirmed the formation of protective films of the porphyrins on N80 steel surface thereby protecting the surface from direct acid attack. Quantum chemical calculations, quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) were also carried out on the studied porphyrins and the results showed that the corrosion inhibition performances of the porphyrins could be related to their E_HOMO, E_LUMO, ω, and μ values. Monte Carlo simulation studies showed that THP has the highest adsorption energy, while T4PP has the least adsorption energy in agreement with the values of σ from quantum chemical calculations.
