Abstract
Removal and recovery of phosphorus (P) from wastewater is beneficial to both environmental protection and resource sustainability. Enriching the low concentration of P in wastewater will greatly facilitate the effective recovery of P. To enhance the adsorption performance and recyclability of adsorbents for low concentration P-containing wastewater, a novel three-dimensional (3D) graphene/La(OH)3-nanorod aerogel (GLA) was prepared by a unique self-assembly process in this study. Benefiting from the large specific surface area of graphene aerogel, which provides sufficient loading sites for the favorable dispersion of La(OH)3 nanorods, the GLA achieves an excellent P adsorption capacity of 76.85 mg/g. It is also highly selective for P, with adsorption capacity reduced by only 14% and 11% under the interference of high concentration of dissolved organic matter or multiple competing anions respectively. Further mechanistic investigation revealed that the whole adsorption process consists of three stages: (1) ion-exchange process; (2) LaP inter-sphere coordination process; and (3) crystal evolution process. In the continuous flow adsorption-desorption cycles, the P concentration was concentrated ~25 times that of the feeding water (2 mg P/L). To our knowledge, this is the first time that La-modified graphene aerogel has been studied for P recovery. This provides a new method for the P removal and recovery of low concentration P-containing wastewater.

Abstract
Phosphate is an important component for the growth of plants and microorganisms; however, excess phosphate causes serious eutrophication in natural waters. New potential low-loss adsorbents from natural biomass for phosphate removal are desired. Bamboo is one of the most abundant renewable cellulose resources; however, the pure bamboo cellulose is poor to adsorb phosphate. To enhance the adsorption capacity, in this work, bamboo sawdust (BS) was chemically modified by two kinds of amines. First, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted on BS using radiation induced graft polymerization. Then, the GMA-grafted BS was further modified by a ring-opening reaction with amines, including ethylenediamine (EDA) and pentaethylene hexamine (PEHA). The amine groups were then quaternized to prepare the BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, TG, and XPS analysis. The adsorption performances of the adsorbents for phosphate were evaluated through batch experiments. The adsorption by BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q both well obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process was chemical monomolecular layer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities for BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q calculated by the Langmuir model were 85.25 and 152.21 mg/g, respectively. A total of 1 mol/L HCl was used to elute the saturated adsorbents. A negligible decrease in adsorption capacity was found after five adsorption–desorption cycles.

Abstract
Preferential removal of phosphate from aqueous was conducted by a novel biomass-based nanocomposite (EP-N+-Zr) with encapsulated hydrous zirconium oxide, and the biopolymer EP-N+-Zr features were described. EP-N+-Zr exhibited high selective sequestration toward phosphate when humic acid or other competing anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, ClO4-) coexisted at relatively high levels. Such excellent performance of EP-N+-Zr was attributed to its specific two site structures; the embedded HZO nanoparticles and quaternary ammonia groups [N+(CH2CH3)3Cl-] bonded inside the biomass-Enteromorpha prolifera, which facilitated preferable capture towards phosphate through specific affinity and nonspecific preconcentration of phosphate ions on the basis of the ion exchange, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate (20 °C) as calculated by Langmuir model was 88.5 mg(P)/g. Regeneration tests showed that EP-N+-Zr could be recycled at least five times without noticeable capacity losses using binary NaOH-NaCl as eluent.

Abstract
Pomelo peel as a by-product from pomelo consumption is rich in various nutrients and functional compounds, while most of the by-product is disposed as wastes. The utilization of pomelo peels could not only result in valued-added products/ingredients, but also reduce the environmental threats. By mainly reviewing the recent articles, pomelo peels could be directly used to produce candied pomelo peel, tea, jams, etc. Additionally, functional components (essential oils, pectin, polyphenols, etc.) could be extracted from pomelo peels and applied in food, pharmaceutical and chemical fields. The extraction methods exerted important influences on the composition, physicochemical properties, bioactivities and structures of the resultant fractions. Furthermore, pomelo peel was exploited to make adsorbents, bioethanol, etc. For the future investigations, the functionality- or bioactivity-oriented regimes to recovery valuable components from pomelo peel should be developed in an economic, effective and eco-friendly way and their applicability in large-scale production should be addressed.

Abstract
In this study, nano zirconium iron oxide based on activated carbon (ZIC) was successfully prepared by using the coprecipitation method. Compared with unmodified activated carbon, ZIC increases the number of active sites by adding metal oxides and hydroxyl groups and greatly improves the adsorption capacity of Sb(v). The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized and analysed by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, VSM and other techniques. The results showed that the zirconium iron oxide particles were successfully loaded and uniformly distributed on the surface of the activated carbon, and the agglomeration phenomenon was reduced. The saturation magnetization of ZIC was 1.89 emu g−1, which easily achieved solid–liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. In batch experiments, when the initial concentration was 1 mg L−1, the dosage of ZIC was 600 mg L−1, the pH value was 5.0, the contact time was 180 min, and the removal rate of Sb(v) reached 97.82%. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZIC for Sb(v) was 11.80 mg g−1. Under the interference of various inorganic ions and dissolved organics, the excellent adsorption capacity was still due to ZIC. The adsorption form was multimolecular-layer adsorption, the adsorption process was an endothermic reaction, and chemical adsorption was dominant as the adsorption mechanism. ZIC has good removal efficiency and is reusable, which indicates that ZIC has prospects for practical wastewater treatment. The adsorbent was highly effective in the removal of Sb(v). The adsorbent easily achieved solid–liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field.![]()

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate new and effective material for the efficiency of phosphate adsorption. Two types of adsorbent materials, the zirconium hydroxides embedded in pomegranate peel (Zr/Peel) and zirconium-lanthanum hydroxides embedded in pomegranate peel (Zr-La/Peel) were developed. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were evaluated to give insight into the physicochemical properties of these adsorbents. Zr-La/Peel exceeded the adsorption efficiency of Zr/Peel adsorbents in batch adsorption experiments at the same pH level. The peel as a host can strive to have a strong "shielding effect" to increase the steadiness of the entrenched Zr and La elements. La and Zr are hydroxide metals that emit many hydrogen ions during the hydrolysis reaction, which contribute to protonation and electrostatic attraction. The highest adsorption capacity of La-Zr/Peel for phosphate was calculated to be 40.21 mg/g, and pseudo second-order equation is very well fitted for kinetic adsorption. Phosphate adsorption efficiency was reduced by an increase of pH. With the background of coexisting Cl-, little effect on adsorption efficiency was observed, while adsorption capacities were reduced by almost 20-30% with the coexistence of [Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text] and humic acid (HA).

Abstract
Effective managements of organic solid waste and surface water eutrophication can reuse/reduce solid waste resources, and ensure surface water safety. Herein, an easily-recoverable amine-functionalized biosorbent was developed from biogas residue (BR-N) for nitrate and phosphate removals from surface water. Physicochemical characteristics revealed that BR-N has a cross-staggered structure with abundant quaternary-amine groups to enhance the diffusion and electrostatic attraction of nitrate/phosphate. In batch studies, nitrate/phosphate could be effectively removed by the BR-N within a wide pH range of 5.0-9.0, and the maximum adsorption capacities of BR-N were 64.12 mg/g for nitrate and 34.40 mg P/g for phosphate. After continuous 8 cycles of adsorption-desorption, BR-N still exhibited >82% adsorption capacity for nitrate/phosphate removals, implying the high chemical stability and reusability for water treatment. Whereafter, BR-N has real application prospect in water treatment, which could effectively treat ˜380, ˜260 and ˜760 bed volumes (BV) of three actual eutrophic surface water to satisfy the surface water standard of China (GB3838-2002). The cost of BR-N was 2.89 $/kg evaluated by energy-economy assessment, indicating the low-cost production of biogas residue-based adsorbent for treating eutrophic surface water. Overall, this study provides a new idea for high-value utilization of organic solid waste and purification of eutrophic water.

Abstract
Eutrophication of water bodies is a serious and widespread environmental problem. Achieving low levels of phosphate concentration to prevent eutrophication is one of the important goals of the wastewater engineering and surface water management. Meeting the increasingly stringent standards is feasible in using a phosphate-selective sorption system. This critical review discusses the most fundamental aspects of selective phosphate removal processes and highlights gains from the latest developments of phosphate-selective sorbents. Selective sorption of phosphate over other competing anions can be achieved based on their differences in acid-base properties, geometric shapes, and metal complexing abilities. Correspondingly, interaction mechanisms between the phosphate and sorbent are categorized as hydrogen bonding, shape complementarity, and inner-sphere complexation, and their representative sorbents are organic-functionalized materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-based materials, respectively. Dominating factors affecting the phosphate sorption performance of these sorbents are critically examined, along with a discussion of some overlooked facts regarding the development of high-performance sorbents for selective phosphate removal from water and wastewater.

Abstract
A quaternized cotton linter fiber (QCLF) based adsorbent for removal of phosphate was prepared by grafting glycidyl methacrylate onto cotton linter and subsequent ring-opening reaction of epoxy groups and further quaternization. The adsorption behavior of the QCLF for phosphate was evaluated in a batch and column experiment. The batch experiment demonstrated that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with an R2 value of 0.9967, and the Langmuir model with R2 value of 0.9952. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity reached 152.44 mg/g. The experimental data of the fixed-bed column were well fitted with the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models, and the adsorption capacity of phosphate at 100 mg/L and flow rate 1 mL/min reached 141.58 mg/g. The saturated QCLF could be regenerated by eluting with 1 M HCl.

Abstract
An anionic adsorbent was prepared by grafting citrate onto pomelo peel (PPL) to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The PPL and modified pomelo peel (MPPL) were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of dye concentration, contact time, and pH on adsorption were studied. The FTIR results confirmed that the carboxyl groups were successfully bound to cellulose molecules in PPL via modification with citrate. SEM indicated that the surface of PPL became clean and the porous structure was well maintained after modification. The adsorption capacities of MB onto PPL and MPPL were 81.7 mg/g and 199.2 mg/g, respectively, thus indicating that the addition of anionic groups significantly improved the adsorption performance. The increase in the initial dye concentration and pH of the dye solution promoted the adsorption process. The adsorption equilibrium on MPPL required approximately 3 h. The adsorption of MB on MPPL was well described by a pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous and exothermic adsorption. This study suggests that PPL modified with citrate can be used as a sustainable adsorbent in wastewater purification.
