Preparation and evaluation of magnetic core–shell mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymers for selective adsorption of amitriptyline in biological samples

Synthesis of a magnetic SBA-15-NH2@Dual-Template Imprinted Polymer for solid phase extraction and determination of Pb and Cd in vegetables; Box Behnken design

In this study, a simple one-step method was applied for extraction and determination of lead and cadmium. The significant variables in extraction and pre-concentration were identified using analysis of variance and their behavior was modeled. Dual-template imprinted polymer was synthesized on modified Mesoporous silica structures coated with Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles. The optimum condition was 6.12 for pH, 40.62 mg for the polymer amount and 17.38 for the ultrasonic time. Concentration range, correlation coefficient, limit of detection and relative standard deviation for lead were reported to be 0.5-950, 0.9988, 0.35 μg L^-1 and 3.5%, respectively. For cadmium the above mentioned figure of merits were 0.3-980, 0.9969, 0.15 μg L^-1 and 2.4%, respectively. The adsorption capacities for lead and cadmium were reported to be 10.28 and 10.38, while their imprinting factors were 5.89 and 6.36, respectively.

Hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymers as emerging adsorbents

Hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymers (HPMIPs) are identified as promising adsorbents with many advantageous properties (e.g., large number of imprinted cavities, highly accessible binding sites, controllable pore structure, and fast mass transfer). Because of such properties, HPMIPs can exhibit improved binding capacity and kinetics to make analyte molecules readily interact with a greater number of recognition sites on the imprinted shell. This review highlights the synthesis and utility of HPMIPs as adsorbents to cover diverse targets of interest (e.g., endocrine disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and heavy metal ions). The overall potential of HPMIPs is thus discussed in the context of analytical chemistry with particular focus on the efficient extraction of trace-level targets from complex matrices.

Molecularly imprinted polymers as a selective sorbent for forensic applications in biological samples-a review

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) consist of a molecular recognition technology with applicability in different areas, including forensic chemistry. Among the forensic applications, the use of MIP in biological fluid analysis has gained prominence. Biological fluids are complex samples that generally require a pre-treatment to eliminate interfering agents to improve the results of the analyses. In this review, we address the development of this molecular imprinting technology over the years, highlighting the forensic applications of molecularly imprinted polymers in biological sample preparation for analysis of stimulant drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, and nicotine.

The Use of Computational Methods for the Development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand-molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field.

Molecularly imprinted polymers in toxicology: a literature survey for the last 5 years

The science of toxicology dates back almost to the beginning of human history. Toxic chemicals, which are encountered in different forms, are always among the chemicals that should be investigated in criminal field, environmental application, pharmaceutic, and even industry, where many researches have been carried out studies for years. Almost all of not only drugs but also industrial dyes have toxic side and direct effects. Environmental micropollutants accumulate in the tissues of all living things, especially plants, and show short- or long-term toxic symptoms. Chemicals in forensic science can be known by detecting the effect they cause to the body with the similar mechanism. It is clear that the best tracking tool among analysis methods is molecularly printed polymer-based analytical setups. Different polymeric combinations of molecularly imprinted polymers allow further study on detection or extraction using chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments. In particular, methods used in forensic medicine can detect trace amounts of poison or biological residues on the scene. Molecularly imprinted polymers are still in their infancy and have many variables that need to be developed. In this review, we summarized how molecular imprinted polymers and toxicology intersect and what has been done about molecular imprinted polymers in toxicology by looking at the studies conducted in the last 5 years.

Application of core-satellite polydopamine-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles-hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymer combined with HPLC-MS/MS for the quantification of macrolide antibiotics

Core-satellite-structured magnetic nanosorbents (MNs) used for the selective extraction of macrolide antibiotics (MACs) were prepared in this study. The MNs (core-satellite polydopamine-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles-hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymer) consisted of polydopamine-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@PDA) "core" linked to numerous hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymer (HPMIP) "satellites" with bridging amine functional groups. It is worth mentioning that HPMIPs act as "anchors" for selectively capturing target molecules. Polymers were characterized using TEM, SEM, FT-IR, VSM, and TGA and applied as magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE) sorbents for the enrichment of trace MACs from a complex food matrix prior to quantification by HPLC-MS/MS. Nanocomposites revealed outstanding magnetic properties (36.1 emu g^-1), a high adsorption capacity (103.6 μmol g^-1), selectivity (IF = 3.2), and fast kinetic binding (20 min) for MACs. The multiple advantages of the novel core-satellite-structured magnetic molecularly imprinted nanosorbents were confirmed, which makes us believe that the preparation method of the core-satellite MNs can be applied to other fields involving molecular imprinting technology.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in bioanalysis

The importance of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials, which are classified as new generation materials, in analytical applications is increasingly understood, and research on the adaptation of these materials to analytical methods has gained momentum. Development of sample preparation techniques and sensor systems using magnetic nanomaterials for the analysis of inorganic, organic and biomolecules in biological samples, which are among the samples that analytical chemists work on most, are among the priority issues. Therefore in this review, we focused on the use of magnetic nanomaterials for the bioanalytical applications including inorganic and organic species and biomolecules in different biological samples such as primarily blood, serum, plasma, tissue extracts, urine and milk. We summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends in sample preparation-analysis methods and sensors based on magnetic nanomaterials (Mag-NMs). First, we provided a brief introduction of magnetic nanomaterials, especially their magnetic properties that can be utilized for bioanalytical applications. Second, we discussed the synthesis of these Mag-NMs. Third, we reviewed recent advances in bioanalytical applications of the Mag-NMs in different formats. Finally, recently literature studies on the relevance of Mag-NMs for bioanalysis applications were presented.

Micro solid phase extraction of cadmium and lead on a new ion-imprinted hierarchical mesoporous polymer via dual-template method in river water and fish muscles: Optimization by experimental design

In the present study, a new class of hierarchical silica based imprinted mesoporous polymers was fabricated by ion imprinting technology and it was applied to simultaneous selective extraction of cadmium and lead ions by micro solid phase extraction (μ-SPE). The biological nanocrystalline cellulose (BNCC) was prepared via acid catalyzed hydrolysis of cotton wool. The hierarchical silica (HS), as a substrate material, was synthesized via dual-template method, using BNCC and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as hard and soft templates respectively. The structure and functional groups was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The results indicate that the as-prepared material has a hierarchical mesoporous structure with high specific surface area and high adsorption capacity for Cd(II) and Pb(II). The optimum experimental conditions in the proposed procedure were determined by response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box Behnken Design (BBD) and then it was successfully applied to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the river water and fish samples.

A Comprehensive Review on Developed Pharmaceutical Analysis Methods by Iranian Analysts in 2018

This article summarizes the publishing activities including bioanalytical and pharmaceutical analyses researches carried out in Iran in 2018 in order to connect academic researchers to those in industry, medical care units and hospitals. A wide spectrum of analytical methods has been used to determine and/or evaluate drug levels in the biological samples, based on physical, chemical and biochemical principles. We have compiled a concise survey of the literature covering 125 reports and tabulated the relevant analytical parameters. Chromatographic and electrochemical methods were found to be the technique of choice for many workers and almost 83% studies were performed by using these methods. This is the first annual review of the literature searching in SCOPUS database for published bioanalytical and pharmaceutical analysis researches in Iran.

Ultrasensitive detection of amoxicillin by TiO2-g-C3N4@AuNPs impedimetric aptasensor: Fabrication, optimization, and mechanism

The trace amount of antibiotics in water can be enriched in the human body through the food chain, leading to extremely harmful effects on people's health. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new methods to detect trace pollutants in various aquatic phase. An analytical method utilizing the synergistic effect between the sensing strategy and catalytic material with high electron transfer capacity can be used to detect trace antibiotics. In this paper, an ultrasensitive impedimetric aptasensor was fabricated by the synergy between functionalized materials (TiO₂-g-C₃N₄) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Due to the formation of the 'Au-S' bond between the thiol-aptamer and Au NPs, amoxicillin and the aptamer can be specifically recognized on the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and the impedance signal increased rapidly. Meanwhile, the Box-Behnken Design (BBD) strategy was used to reduce the random error of the experiment, so that the prepared aptasensor has the highest sensitivity to the detection of amoxicillin. Under optimized conditions, the sensor successfully achieved the detection of amoxicillin in the ultra-low detection range (0.5-3 nM) and reached the ultra-low detection limit (0.2 nM). The detection strategy has good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, and thus has good potential to detect amoxicillin in actual wastewater.

Ultrasonic-assisted micro solid phase extraction of arsenic on a new ion-imprinted polymer synthesized from chitosan-stabilized pickering emulsion in water, rice and vegetable samples

Pickering emulsion polymerization has been employed for the Ultrasonic assisted-micro solid phase extraction (UA-µSPE) of ultra trace arsenic species by a new magnetic ion imprinted polymer (MIIP) prior to hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. 2-acetyl benzofuran thiosemicarbazone (2-ABT) as a new chelating agent and core- shell hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and the polymerization was carried out at the presence of arsenic - ligand complex, crosslinker, monomer, initiator, stabilizing agent and water-oil emulsion magnetic carrier. In second step, the nanoparticles and polymers were characterized. The analytical parameters such as pH, amount of polymer and ultrasonic time were selected and optimozed by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs respectively. Linear dynamic range, detection limit and relative standard deviation were 0.01-85.000 µg·L^-l, 0.003 µg·L^-l, and 3.21%, respectively. The proposed preconcentration procedure was successfully applied to the determination of arsenic ion in a wide range of food samples with different and complex matrixes.

Preparation and evaluation of a porous molecularly imprinted polymer for selective recognition of the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine

A novel and porous molecularly imprinted polymer (PMIP) was synthesized and used as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent for preconcentration of carbamazepine (CBZ) prior to its quantitation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in various sample forms (e.g., drinking water, river water, hospital wastewater, and pharmaceuticals). PMIP-CBZ was applied to a polymerization process in which polystyrene spheres were coated with a silica layer. Removal of polystyrene spheres and formation of porous silica facilitated the recovery of CBZ (99.4%) during the extraction process. Site accessibility to the surface of PMIP-CBZ increased the density of high-recognition sites. PMIP-CBZ was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The key variables influencing the extraction efficiency of PMIP (e.g., adsorbent loading, eluent type, eluent volume, reusability of the adsorbent, and cross-reactivity) were optimized. The optimized protocol was successfully employed to quantify CBZ with limit of detection and limit of quantification as 0.082 and 0.270 ng/mL, respectively (linear detection range: 0.5-250 ng/mL and a relative standard deviation:  < 5%). Use of the PMIP adsorbent resulted in a sensitive and stable method for efficiently quantitation of CBZ from various real sample matrices.

Preparation and application of magnetic molecular imprinted polymers for extraction of cephalexin from pork and milk samples

A highly selective and effective method was successfully developed using magnetic molecular imprinted polymers (MMIPs) as solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) to rapidly determine cephalexin (CFX) in complex animal-derived food. MMIPs were creatively synthesized via suspension polymerization using Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles as supporter, CFX as template, acrylamide (AM) as functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker. The MMIPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The binding process fitted well with pseudo-second-order model with good selectivity. Scatchard plot analysis suggested that MMIPs have two types of binding sites with the Q_max of 24.18 mg g^-1 and 40.25 mg g^-1, respectively. And Langmuir model proved that the recognition sites were uniformly distributed in a monolayer on the surface of MMIPs. The methodological assessment showed good applicability of MMIPs with excellent recovery (85.5%-94.0%), precision (1.2%-2.4%), and stability (intra-day 1.3%-3.6%; inter-day 2.6%-4.3%) in determining CFX content. In addition, the linearity of the calibration curve was good in the range of 0.02-5.00 mg L^-1, with a sensitive detection limit of 5.00 μg kg^-1. The results above suggest that the obtained MMIPs exert good performance for separation of CFX in animal-derived food, and the proposed method is suitable for the reliable determination of CFX in complex samples.

Recent Progress of Imprinted Nanomaterials in Analytical Chemistry

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are a type of tailor-made materials that have ability to selectively recognize the target compound/s. MIPs have gained significant research interest in solid-phase extraction, catalysis, and sensor applications due to their unique properties such as low cost, robustness, and high selectivity. In addition, MIPs can be prepared as composite nanomaterials using nanoparticles, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), nanorods, quantum dots (QDs), graphene, and clays. This review paper aims to demonstrate and highlight the recent progress of the applications of imprinted nanocomposite materials in analytical chemistry.
