Prospect of clay-based flexible adsorbent coatings as cleaner production technique in wastewater treatment, challenges, and issues: A review

Application of Mesoporous Silicas for Adsorption of Organic and Inorganic Pollutants from Rainwater

Precipitation is an important factor that influences the quality of surface water in many regions of the world. The pollution of stormwater runoff from roads and parking lots is an understudied area in water quality research. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the physicochemical properties of rainwater flowing from parking lots was carried out, considering heavy metals and organic micropollutants. High concentrations of zinc were observed in rainwater, in addition to alkanes, e.g., tetradecane, hexadecane, octadecane, 2,6,10-trimethyldodecane, 2-methyldodecane; phenolic derivatives, such as 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and 2,4-di-tertbutylphenol; and compounds such as benzothiazole. To remove the contaminants present in rainwater, adsorption using silica carriers of the MCF (Mesostructured Cellular Foams) type was performed. Three groups of modified carriers were prepared, i.e., (1) SH (thiol), (2) NH2 (amino), and (3) NH2/SH (amine and thiol functional groups). The research problem, which is addressed in the presented article, is concerned with the silica carrier influence of the functional group on the adsorption efficiency of micropollutants. The study included an evaluation of the effects of adsorption dose and time on the efficiency of the contaminant removal process, as well as an analysis of adsorption isotherms and reaction kinetics. The colour adsorption from rainwater was 94-95% for MCF-NH2 and MCF-NH2/SH. Zinc adsorbance was at a level of 90% for MCF-NH2, and for MCF-NH2/SH, 52%. Studies have shown the high efficacy (100%) of MCF-NH2 in removing organic micropollutants, especially phenolic compounds and benzothiazole. On the other hand, octadecane was the least susceptible to adsorption in each case. It was found that the highest efficiency of removal of organic micropollutants and zinc ions was obtained through the use of functionalized silica NH2.

Comparison of Dye Adsorption of Chitosan and Polyethylenimine Modified Bentonite Clays: Optimization, Isotherm, and Kinetic Studies

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of modifying calcium bentonite (Bent-Ca) clay with two cationic polymers, chitosan (Chi) and polyethylenimine (PEI), on the removal of remazol black B (RB-B) dye from an aqueous solution. The samples were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The fractional factorial design of 2(6-1) was applied to investigate the effects of pH, temperature, amount of adsorbent, initial dye concentration, contact time, and shaking rate on the adsorption process. To further optimize RB-B removal from an aqueous solution, a Box-Behnken design with three factors and a response surface methodology was used. The optimum conditions were a pH of 3.77, a temperature of 40.45 °C, and an initial RB-B concentration of 77.27 mg L-1 for Bent-Ca-Chi, whereas for Bent-Ca-PEI, the optimum conditions were a pH of 5.53, a temperature of 41.06 °C, and an initial dye concentration of 238.89 mg L-1. To understand the adsorption behavior, the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were fitted to the experimental data. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm model matched well with the dye adsorption by Bent-Ca-Chi and Bent-Ca-PEI. The kinetics study was performed using three kinetic models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. Among these models, the RB-B dye kinetics were best represented by the pseudo-second-order model equation for the adsorbents.

Facile synthesis and ultrastrong adsorption of a novel polyacrylamide-modified diatomite/cerium alginate hybrid aerogel for anionic dyes from aqueous environment

An eco-friendly cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM)-modified diatomite/Ce(III)-crosslinked sodium alginate hybrid aerogel (CPAM-Dia/Ce-SA) was synthesized successfully and characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis and XPS. Adsorption performance, interaction mechanism and reusability of CPAM-Dia/Ce-SA used for the removal of acid blue 113 (AB 113), acid blue 80 (AB 80), acid yellow 117 (AY 117), Congo red (CR) and Direct Green 6 (DG 6) anionic dyes from aqueous media were investigated in detail. The results demonstrate that CPAM-Dia/Ce-SA aerogel is macroscopic polymer hybrid spheres with a particle size of around 1.3 mm, unique undulating mountain-like surface and porous mesostructure, and exhibits outstanding adsorption capacity for anionic dyes and good reusability. The maximum adsorption amounts of AB 113, AB 80, AY 117, CR and DG 6 by CPAM-Dia/Ce-SA were 3008, 1208, 914, 1832 and 1232 mg/g at pH 2.0, 60 min contact time and 25 °C, and corresponding removal efficiency reached individually 97.5, 96.6, 99.7, 99.9 and 98.5 % respectively and were less affected by increasing pH up to 10.0. Dye adsorption behaviour and adsorption processes with spontaneous and exothermic nature were perfectly interpreted by the Langmuir and Pseudo-second-order rate models respectively. Physicochemical and multisite-H-bonding synergies promoted the ultrastrong biosorption of anionic dyes by CPAM-Dia/Ce-SA.

Surface-modified graphene oxide-based composites for advanced sequestration of basic blue 41 from aqueous solution

Advanced materials for the efficient treatment of textile wastewater need to be developed for the sustainable growth of the textile industry. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was modified by the incorporation of natural clay (bentonite) and mixed metal oxide (copper-cobalt oxide) to produce GO-based binary and ternary composites. Two binary composites, GO/bentonite and GO/Cu-Co Ox (oxide), and one ternary composite, GO/bentonite/Cu-Co Ox, were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The adsorption efficiency of these composites was evaluated against a cationic dye, Basic Blue 41 (BB41). The composites had several surface functional groups, and the ternary composite had tubular porous structures formed by the cross-linking of the bentonite and GO planes. The BET surface area of the ternary composite was 50% higher than that of the GO. The BB41 removals were 92, 89, 80, and 69% for GO/bentonite/Cu-Co oxide, GO/bentonite, GO and GO/Cu-Co oxide, respectively. The pseudo-2nd-order and intraparticle diffusion models best describe the kinetics results, indicating chemisorption and slow pore diffusion-controlled adsorption processes. The Langmuir isotherm-derived adsorption capacity of GO/bentonite/Cu-Co oxide was 351.1 mg/g, which was very close to the measured value. After five consecutive cycles, the ternary composite retained 90% BB41 removal efficiency compared to its 1st cycle. Electrostatic interaction and pore diffusion were predicted to be the controlling mechanisms for the adsorption of the BB41. The GO-based ternary composite can be a feasible and scalable adsorbent for BB41 in wastewater treatment.

Sustainable fabrication of hybrid silver-copper nanocomposites (Ag-CuO NCs) using Ocimum americanum L. as an effective regime against antibacterial, anticancer, photocatalytic dye degradation and microalgae toxicity

In this study, a sustainable fabrication of hybrid silver-copper oxide nanocomposites (Ag-CuO NCs) was accomplished utilizing Ocimum americanum L. by one pot green chemistry method. The multifarious biological and environmental applications of the green fabricated Ag-CuO NCs were evaluated through their antibacterial, anticancer, dye degradation, and microalgae growth inhibition activities. The morphological features of the surface functionalized hybrid Ag-CuO NCs were confirmed by FE-SEM and HR-TEM techniques. The surface plasmon resonance λ_max peak appeared at 441.56 nm. The average hydrodynamic size distribution of synthesized nanocomposite was 69.80 nm. Zeta potential analysis of Ag-CuO NCs confirmed its remarkable stability at -21.5 mV. XRD and XPS techniques validated the crystalline structure and electron binding affinity of NCs, respectively. The Ag-CuO NCs demonstrated excellent inhibitory activity against Vibrio cholerae (19.93 ± 0.29 mm) at 100 μg/mL. Anticancer efficacy of Ag-CuO NCs was investigated against the A549 lung cancer cell line, and Ag-CuO NCs exhibited outstanding antiproliferative activity with a low IC₅₀ of 2.8 ± 0.05 μg/mL. Furthermore, staining and comet assays substantiated that the Ag-CuO NCs hindered the progression of the A549 cells and induced apoptosis as a result of cell cycle arrest at the G₀/G₁ phase. Concerning the environmental applications, the Ag-CuO NCs displayed efficient photocatalytic activity against eosin yellow degradation up to 80.94% under sunlight irradiation. Microalgae can be used as an early bio-indicator/prediction of environmental contaminants and toxic substances. The treatment of the Ag-CuO NCs on the growth of marine microalgae Tetraselmis suecica demonstrated the dose and time-dependent growth reduction and variations in the chlorophyll content. Therefore, the efficient multifunctional properties of hybrid Ag-CuO NCs could be exploited as a regime against infective diseases and cancer. Further, the findings of our investigation witness the remarkable scope and potency of Ag-CuO NCs for environmental applications.

Fabrication, Properties, and Performance of Polymer-Clay Nanocomposites for Organic Dye Removal from Aqueous Media

Methylene blue dye (MB dye) is a harmful contaminant for wastewater streams of industries and is harmful to human and aquatic life. An ecofriendly sugar templating process was used to generate porous bentonite/polydimethylsiloxane (PB) and porous magnetite nanoparticles/bentonite/polydimethylsiloxane (PBNP) composite absorbents to remove MB dye in this study. During the infiltration of PDMS solution into the sugar template in the vacuum chamber, bentonite and magnetite particles were integrated on the surface of the PDMS, and the porous structure was generated during the leaching out of sugar particles in water. The absorbents were characterized using Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The absence of the methyl bond at 2924 cm-1 and phenol bond at 3325 cm-1 in the FTIR spectra of the formed membrane proves that the food grade sugar was completely removed. The SEM images confirm that porosity was achieved as well as uniform mixing of the in the formation of composite. MB dye was effectively removed from wastewater using the as-prepared composite as absorbent. The removal efficiencies of the composite PBNP and PB were ~91% and ~85%, respectively. The experimental data was applied to pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic models as well as the Dubinin-Radushkevich, Harkins-Jura, and Elovich models for the adsorption isotherm. The data was found to fit the pseudo-second-order and Elovich models, respectively. The results show that the presence of magnetite nanoparticles improved MB dye removal significantly.

Insights on applications of bentonite clays for the removal of dyes and heavy metals from wastewater: a review

In recent decades, increased industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities have resulted in the release of various pollutants into the aquatic systems, which require a reliable and environmentally friendly method to remove them. Adsorption is one of the most cost-effective and sustainable wastewater treatment techniques. A plethora of low-cost bio-based adsorbents have been developed worldwide so far to supplant activated carbon and its high processing costs. Bentonite clays (BCs), whether in natural or modified form, have gained enormous potential in wastewater treatment and have been used successfully as a novel and cost-effective bio-sorbent for removing organic and inorganic pollutants from the liquid suspension. It has become a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment due to its variety of surface and structural properties, superior chemical stability, high capacity for cation exchange, elevated surface area due to its layered structure, non-toxicity, abundance, low cost, and high adsorption capacity compared to other clays. This review encompasses comprehensive literature about various modification techniques and adsorption mechanisms of BCs concerning dyes and heavy metal removal from wastewater. A critical overview of different parameters for optimizing adsorption capacity and regeneration via the desorption technique has also been presented here. Finally, a conclusion has been drawn with some future research recommendations based on technological challenges encountered in industrializing these materials.
