Preparation of biochar grafted with amino-riched dendrimer by carbonization, magnetization and functional modification for enhanced copper removal

Strength and functionalized borage biochar for effective elimination of nickel contamination: Insight into batch and dynamic flow mode treatment applications

A silica gel-modified borage biochar (BB@Si) was first produced and used as a binding agent for potentially hazardous Ni2+ ions in aqueous systems. The recommended biochar was more effective in eliminating Ni2+ than pristine biochar (BB). Its maximum qm could reach up to 1.39 × 10-3 mol/g at 30 °C, and sorption isotherms showed that the Langmuir model could more accurately define its sorption behavior. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm also revealed that the average sorption energy ranged from 11.00 to 11.14 kJ/mol. Zeta potential tests, SEM images, and FT-IR scans confirmed the interactions between BB@Si and Ni2+ ions. Dynamic flow treatment studies showed high uptake effectiveness when the flow rate and amount of BB@Si were suitable. Nickel desorption yield of around 80% from BB@Si was noted with 0.01 M HCl. The BB@Si column's breakthrough and exhausted points were identified to be 45 and 352 min, respectively. Its maximum exhaustion capacity value was determined to be 52.73 mg/g. Ni2+ removal from the actual wastewater sample exceeded 75%. The resulting outcomes imply the immense potential of employing BB@Si in the treatment of Ni2+- contaminated aqueous systems.

Magnetic biochar enhanced copper immobilization in agricultural lands: Insights from adsorption precipitation and redox

Biochar has exceeded expectations for heavy metal immobilization and has been prepared from widely available sources and inexpensive materials. In this research, coconut shell biochar (CSB), bamboo biochar (BC), magnetic coconut shell charcoal (MCSB), and magnetic bamboo biochar (MBC) were manufactured via co-pyrolysis, and their adsorption properties were tested. The pseudo-secondary (R2 = 0.980-0.985) adsorption kinetic fittings for the four biochas were superior to the pseudo-primary kinetics (R2 = 0.969-0.982). Unmodified biochar adsorption isotherms were more consistent with the Freundlich model, while magnetic biochar fitted Langmuir models better. The maximum adsorption capacity of MCSB for Cu(Ⅱ) reached 371.50 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanisms quantitatively analysis of the biochar indicated that chemical precipitation and ion exchange contributed to the adsorption, in which the magnetic biochar metal-π complexation also enhanced the adsorption. The pot experiment revealed that MCSB (2.0 %DW) significantly enhanced the biomass of lettuce, and facilitated the immobilization of DTPA-Cu (p < 0.05). SEM-EDS, XPS, and FTIR were utilized for morphological characterization and functional group identification, and the increased active adsorption sites (-OH, -COOH, CO, and Fe-O) of MCSB enhanced chemisorption and π-π EDA complexation with Cu(Ⅱ). EEM-PARAFAC and RDA analysis further elucidated that magnetic biochar immobilized copper and reduced biotoxicity (efficiency: 76.12%) by adjusting soil pH, phosphate, and SOM release (negative correlation). The presence of iron oxides (FeOx) promoted in situ adsorption of metallic copper and offered new insights into soil remediation.

Synthesis of functional poly(amidoamine) dendrimer decorated apple residue cellulose for efficient removal of aqueous Hg(II)

Water pollution caused by Hg(II) exerts hazardous effect to the environment and public health. The design and fabrication of eco-friendly bioadsorbents for efficient removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution is a promising strategy. Herein, a series of bioadsorbents were synthesized by the decoration of apple residue cellulose with different generation (G) Schiff base functionalized poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers (SA-G0/CE, SA-G1.0/CE and SA-G2.0/CE). The structures of SA-G0/CE, SA-G1.0/CE and SA-G2.0/CE were characterized and their adsorption performances were determined comprehensively by considering various factors. The maximum adsorption capacity of SA-G0/CE, SA-G1.0/CE and SA-G2.0/CE for Hg(II) are 1.18, 1.73 and 1.88 mmol·g^-1, respectively. The as-prepared bioadsorbents exhibit competitive adsorption capacity as compared with other reported adsorbents. Moreover, they exhibit remarkable adsorption selectivity toward Hg(II) with the coexistence of Ni(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), or Pb(II). The bioadsorbents display satisfactory adsorption performance in real water sample and can be reused with good regeneration property. Adsorption mechanism reveals that the functional groups of OH, -CONH-, CN and NC take part in the adsorption for Hg(II). The work not only opens a pathway to realize the reuse of apple residue, but also provides a promising strategy to construct efficient bioadsorbents for the decontamination of Hg(II) from aqueous solution.

Polyethylenimine-grafted nitrogen-doping magnetic biochar for efficient Cr(VI) decontamination: Insights into synthesis and adsorption mechanisms

Herein, polyethylenimine (PEI)-grafted nitrogen (N)-doping magnetic biochar (PEI_MW@MNBC_BM) was synthesized, and characterization results showed that the microwave-assisted PEI grafting and ball milling-assisted N doping introduced abundant amino, pyridine N and pyrrole N structures onto biochar, which possessed high affinity to Cr(VI) in the anion form. The as-prepared PEI_MW@MNBC_BM displayed pH-dependence adsorption performance and high tolerance to co-existing ions with maximum uptake capacity of Cr(VI) identified as 183.02 mg/g. Furthermore, PEI_MW@MNBC_BM could bind Cr(VI) through electrostatic attraction, complexion, precipitation, reduction and pore filling. Especially, effective reduction of Cr(VI) was ascribed to cooperative electron transfer of partial oxygen-containing functional groups, intramolecular pyridine/pyrrole N, protonated amino and Fe²⁺ on the adsorbent, while oxygen-containing and amino functional groups from N-doping biochar and PEI synergistically complexed Cr(III) via providing lone pair electrons to form coordinate bonds. Furthermore, the stable precipitation was formed between Fe³⁺ and Cr(III). Additionally, the Cr(VI) elimination efficiency could maintain 95.83% even after four adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting PEI_MW@MNBC_BM as a high-performance adsorbent for Cr(VI) contaminated water remediation.

Design a flower-like magnetic graphite carbon microsphere for enhanced adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol

2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) is a hazardous chlorinated organic chemical, so its removal is an important task to protect the whole ecosystem and human health. During the material preparation, the magnetic graphitic carbon adsorbent (HFMCM) with a sparse sheet-like stacking structure was formed by interlayer assembly of nickel hydroxide nanosheets and hydrothermal glucose carbon. The conditions for optimal performance of the adsorbent are 45 °C and pH 5. The maximum adsorption capacity of HFMCM-180 for 2,4-DCP is 147.06 mg·g^-1. Adsorption behavior in accordance with Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorbent remains selective for 2,4-DCP in metal ion solutions. More than 75% of the adsorption capacity is maintained after five cycles of adsorption. Electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π bonding play a major role in the adsorption of 2,4-DCP by HFMCM. The adsorbent was glucose as the carbon source, nickel sulfate as the magnetic source, and hexamethylenetetramine as the precipitant. Its carbonization after pretreatment with different hydrothermal temperatures resulted in the synthesis of flower-like graphitic carbon spheres with magnetic properties. The interconnected pore channels on the adsorbent surface conferred large specific surface area to the material. 2,4-DCP was efficiently adsorbed by π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction within the pore channels with low spatial potential resistance.

Applications of functionalized magnetic biochar in environmental remediation: A review

Magnetic biochar (MBC) is extensively applied on contaminants removal from environmental medium for achieving environmental-friendly remediation with reduction of secondary pollution owing to its easy recovery and separation. However, the summary of MBC synthesis methods is still lack of relevant information. Moreover, the adsorption performance for pollutants by MBC is limited, and thus it is imperative to adopt modification techniques to enhance the removal ability of MBC. Unfortunately, there are few reviews to present modification methods of MBC with applications for removing hazardous contaminants. Herein, we critically reviewed (i) MBC synthetic methods with corresponding advantages and limitations; (ii) adsorption mechanisms of MBC for heavy metals and organic pollutants; (iii) various modification methods for MBC such as functional groups grafting, nanoparticles loading and element doping; (iv) applications of modified MBC for hazardous contaminants adsorption with deep insight to relevant removal mechanisms; and (v) key influencing conditions like solution pH, temperature and interfering ions toward contaminants removal. Finally, some constructive suggestions were put forward for the practical applications of MBC in the near future. This review provided a comprehensive understanding of using functionalized MBC as effective adsorbent with low-cost and high-performance characteristics for contaminated environment remediation.

Biochar-based composites for remediation of polluted wastewater and soil environments: Challenges and prospects

Pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, and dyes are the main environmental contaminants that have serious effects on both land and aquatic lives and necessitate the development of effective methods to mitigate these issues. Although some conventional methods are in use to tackle soil contamination, but biochar and biochar-based composites represent a reliable and sustainable means to deal with a spectrum of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated environments. The capacity of biochars and derived constructs to remediate inorganic dyes, pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals from environmental matrices is attributed to their extensive surface area, surface functional groups, pore size distribution, and high sorption capability of these pollutants in water and soil environments. Application conditions, biochar feedstock, pyrolysis conditions and precursor materials are the factors that influence the capacity and functionality of biochar to adsorb pollutants from wastewater and soil. These factors, when improved, can benefit biochar in agrochemical and heavy metal remediation from various environments. However, the processes involved in biochar production and their influence in enhancing pollutant sequestration remain unclear. Therefore, this paper throws light on the current strategies, operational conditions, and sequestration performance of biochar and biochar-based composites for agrochemical and heavy metal in soil and water environments. The main challenges associated with biochar preparation and exploitation, toxicity evaluation, research directions and future prospects for biochar in environmental remediation are also outlined.

The Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions by Poly (Amidoamine) Dendrimer-Functionalized Nanomaterials: A Review

Rapid industrialization has resulted in serious heavy metal pollution. The removal of heavy metal ions from solutions is very important for environmental safety and human health. Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers are artificial macromolecular materials with unique physical and chemical properties. Abundant amide bonds and amino functional groups provide them with a high affinity for heavy metal ions. Herein, PAMAM-functionalized adsorbents are reviewed in terms of different nanomaterial substrates. Approaches in which PAMAM is grafted onto the surfaces of substrates are described in detail. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of these adsorbents are also discussed. The effects of PAMAM generation, pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, thermodynamics, and ionic strength on adsorption performance are summarized. Adsorption mechanisms and the further functionalization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents are reviewed. In addition to the positive results, existing problems are also put forward in order to provide a reference for the optimization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents of heavy metal ions.

A Review: Adsorption and Removal of Heavy Metals Based on Polyamide-amines Composites

In recent years, the problem of heavy metal pollution has become increasingly prominent, so it is urgent to develop new heavy metal adsorption materials. Compared with many adsorbents, the polyamide-amine dendrimers (PAMAMs) have attracted extensive attention of researchers due to its advantages of macro-molecular cavity, abundant surface functional groups, non-toxicity, high efficiency and easy modification. But in fact, it is not very suitable as an adsorbent because of its solubility and difficulty in separation, which also limits its application in environmental remediation. Therefore, in order to make up for the shortcomings of this material to a certain extent, the synthesis and development of polymer composite materials based on PAMAMs are increasingly prominent in the direction of solving heavy metal pollution. In this paper, the application of composites based on PAMAMs and inorganic or organic components in the adsorption of heavy metal ions is reviewed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of PAMAMs composites for removal of heavy metal ions in water environment are discussed.

Efficient removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution by chitosan modified kiwi branch biochar

Production of cost-efficient composite materials from low-cost modified biochar for the removal of Cd (II) from wastewater is much needed to meet the growing needs of industrial wastewater treatments. A novel chitosan-modified kiwi branch biochar (CHKB) was fabricated as low-cost modified biochar for the removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution. Batch adsorption and characterization experiments indicated that the modification of kiwi biochar (KB) by chitosan remarkably improved its adsorption performance. The results revealed that the adsorption isotherms can be best described by a Langmuir model and that a pseudo-second-order model fits the Cd (II) adsorption kinetics well, which indicates that it is a monolayer process controlled by chemisorption. CHKB exhibited a Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of Cd (II) (126.58 mg g^-1), whereas that of KB was only 4.26 mg g^-1. The adsorption ability of CHKB was improved by increasing the surface area and an abundance of surface functional groups (-OH, -NH, CO, etc.). The cation exchange, electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and precipitation were the main mechanisms in the sorption of Cd (II) on CHKB. Excellent adsorption performance, low cost, and environmental-friendliness made CHKB a fantastic adsorbent for the removal of Cd (II) in wastewater.
