Cadaver as a first teacher: A module to learn the ethics and values of cadaveric dissection

Implementation status of the nationally harmonized competency-based, integrated, modular medical curriculum in Ethiopia: opportunities and challenges

BACKGROUND

Well-designed curriculums are crucial for quality education. This study aimed to assess the implementation status of a harmonized competency-based medical curriculum (CBMC) in Ethiopia, as well as identify the associated challenges and benefits.

METHODS

A mixed-method approach was used. Data collection took place from September 1, 2023, to October 15, 2023. Eleven medical schools were randomly selected from a list of 28 public medical schools in Ethiopia. Participants were purposively chosen from selected medical schools using a controlled sampling method. A total of 121 participants took part in the survey. Interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with key informants to complement the quantitative findings. Descriptive statistics, such as frequencies and percentages, were used to summarize the quantitative survey responses. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data.

RESULTS

The implementation of a CBMC in Ethiopian public universities faces various challenges and provides opportunities. Around 22% of respondents mentioned that the whole group session (WGS) had never been implemented in their school. Regarding community-based learning (CBL), 64.6% of respondents noted that it was intermittently implemented in their institution. Only 32% of respondents considered students' clinical exposure during preclerkship years to be reasonable. Interestingly, approximately 73% of respondents stated that problem-based learning (PBL) activities were regularly conducted in their school. Around 68% of respondents believed that competency-based assessment methods were moderately utilized. While many participants perceive the curriculum as having positive content alignment and structure with intended learning outcomes, challenges related to practical sessions, resource limitations, and uneven access to training opportunities persist. Resource constraints are a prominent challenge. The opportunities identified include early clinical exposure and enhanced communication skills.

CONCLUSIONS

This survey highlights the need for ongoing curriculum evaluation and fine-tuning to ensure its success.

Research advances and trends in anatomy from 2013 to 2023: A visual analysis based on CiteSpace and VOSviewer

As the cornerstone of medicine, the development of anatomy is related to many disciplines and fields and has received extensive attention from researchers. How to integrate and grasp the cutting-edge information in this field quickly is a challenge for researchers, so the aim of this study is to analyze research in anatomy using CiteSpace and VOSviewer in order to identify research hotspots and future directions. To offer a fresh viewpoint for assessing the academic influences of researchers, nations, or institutions on anatomy, and to examine the development of hotspots in anatomical study and to forecast future trends. A total of 4637 anatomy-related publications from 2013 to 2023 were collected from Web of Science Core Collection databases. Their temporal distribution, spatial distribution, cited authors, co-cited journals, keywords, and disciplinary connections in the literature were analyzed using CiteSpace and VOSviewer, and a knowledge graph was constructed. The temporal distribution shows a general fluctuation in the amount of literature published from 2013 to 2023. In spatial distribution, the total number of published articles was highest in the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, the United States leading. Tubbs, Rhoton, Iwanaga, and LaPrade are important authors in anatomy. Clinical Anatomy, Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, and Journal of Anatomy were the most highly cited journals. Analysis of keywords and citation emergence showed that the research hotspots and trends in anatomy focused mainly on anatomy education, digital technology, and surgical management. At the same time, anatomy showed a trend toward multidisciplinary crossover, developing closer relationships with molecular biology, immunology, and clinical medicine. Current research in anatomy focuses on innovative reform of the educational model and the application and promotion of digital technology. Also, multidisciplinary cross-fertilization is an inevitable trend for the future development of anatomy.

Honoring human body donors: Five core themes to consider regarding ethical treatment and memorialization

Dissection of human body donors is a common component of anatomy curricula, as it provides opportunities for tactile and intellectual engagement unmatched otherwise. Additionally, interaction with human body donors contributes to the "hidden curriculum" of allowing students to begin to ethically practice patient care with empathy, respect, and compassion. With this, there have been various proposed guidelines for the ethical treatment of human body donors, with most focusing on student reflections and a final ceremony for honoring the donors, but there are numerous other ways throughout the course to incorporate ethical values and to guide students to consider the humanity of the donor. This article proposes that institutions consider the incorporation of five easily implemented formalized ethical themes for working with human body donations into daily practices: (1) reflect the donor as possessing human dignity, (2) recognize the donor's role of the "First Patient" or "Silent Teacher," (3) honor the gift of human body donation, (4) recognize the decedent's family, and (5) consider inclusivity in memorialization practices. Multiple recommendations for integrating these five themes throughout the course are provided. The incorporation of these five core themes can assist in alleviating the psychological stress that some students struggle with in dissection courses, foster the feelings and attributes that comprise the hidden curriculum and are the desired characteristics of a caring medical provider, and discourage misuse and mistreatment of donors.

The impact of human cadaveric dissection on professional identity formation in medical students

BACKGROUND

As technology advances, some schools are moving away from human cadaveric dissection to teach anatomy, leading to concern regarding the possible loss of a professional identity building experience. This study explored the role of dissection in students' professional identity formation.

METHODS

A mixed-methods study was conducted using survey methodology and semi-structured interviews of medical students at an American-style graduate-entry medical school in Singapore. The questionnaire adopted the conceptual framework of the Ring Theory of Personhood and the MacLeod-Clark Professional Identity Scale was used to measure professional identity, followed by semi-structured interviews of students using Braun and Clarke's six-phase reflexive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Respondents did not differ substantively from non-respondents by age, nationality, or ethnicity, and year of entering medical school, however, they were slightly more female dominant. The number of hours of hands-on participation in dissection showed no significant relationship (r2 = 0.010; p = 0.424) with professional identity formation measured by the MacLeod-Clark Professional Identity Scale. Despite the survey results, semi-structured interviews revealed rich and nuanced findings suggesting the influence of dissection in participants' professional identity formation through deepening students' appreciation of humanistic values and enhancing their notions of patients' personhood. Notably, students without dissection experience did not express these sentiments and were orientated towards knowledge acquisition.

CONCLUSION

While our findings do not suggest that dissection strongly impacts students' professional identity formation, students shared thought-provoking experiences which suggest some level of its contribution. Careful consideration of this phenomenon should be exercised prior to removing dissection in favour of technological alternatives.

Tutorials in anatomy education of medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic - An evaluation of its effectiveness

Anatomy has traditionally been taught through prosected specimens and the use of models and other techniques. During the COVID-19 period, this was replaced by tutorials, where students came to college to continue taking practical sessions. The study comprised four components. The first component consisted of demographic data. The second component consisted of questions concerning students' satisfaction with the tutorials. The third component included questions for Year 2 medical students only because they had tried both the new and old systems. The fourth component included the results for the Year 2 medical students. The study included 102 medical students. The number of tutorials each week and the duration of each tutorial were considered successful, since 47 (46.1%) and 44 (43.1%) students approved, respectively. The students were comfortable with understanding the information from PowerPoint presentations; 41 (40.2%) agreed with this statement. Moreover, 44 students (43.1%) agreed about the ability to recall material after the tutorial and the interaction it allowed them with the doctors. Overall, all the questions proved that the tutorials were of great value to the students during the COVID-19 period. Although COVID-19 limited anatomy teaching, tutorials were seen as a light at the end of the tunnel pending the end of the COVID-19 period.

A Multicentre Analysis of Approaches to Learning and Student Experiences of Learning Anatomy Online

INTRODUCTION

The approaches to learning students adopt when learning anatomy online could yield important lessons for educators. Dissection room teaching can encourage students to adopt a deep approach to learning anatomy. It was therefore hypothesized that the proportion of students adopting a deep approach to learning would be lower in a population learning anatomy online. This research aims to investigate the experiences of students learning anatomy online during the COVID-19 pandemic and the approaches to learning they adopted.

METHODS

A survey was distributed to medical students at 7 universities across the UK and Ireland. The survey included two previously validated questionnaires: Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students and Anatomy Learning Experience Questionnaire.

RESULTS

The analysis included 224 unique student responses. Students' approach to learning mirrored reports from previous studies conducted during face-to-face tuition with 44.3% adopting deep, 40.7% strategic, 11.4% surface, and 3.6% combined learning approaches. The university (p = 0.019) and changes to formative (p = 0.016) and summative (p = 0.009) assessments significantly impacted approach to learning. Students reported that online resources were effective but highlighted the need for clearer guidance on how to find and use them successfully.

CONCLUSION

It is important to highlight that students value in-person opportunities to learn from human cadaveric material and hence dissection room sessions should remain at the forefront of anatomical education. It is recommended that future online and/or blended provisions of anatomy teaching include varied resources that maximize engagement with media featuring cadaveric specimens.

Students' learning experiences of three-dimensional printed models and plastinated specimens: a qualitative analysis

BACKGROUND

Traditional cadaveric dissection is declining whilst plastinated and three-dimensional printed (3DP) models are increasingly popular as substitutes to the conventional anatomy teaching and learning methods. It is unclear about the pros and cons of these new tools and how they impact students' learning experiences of anatomy including humanistic values such as respect, care and empathy.  METHODS: Ninety-six students' views were sought immediately after a randomized cross-over study. Pragmatic design was used to investigate the learning experiences of using plastinated and 3DP models of cardiac (in Phase 1, n = 63) and neck (in Phase 2, n = 33) anatomy. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted based on 278 free text comments (related to strengths, weaknesses, things to improve), and focus group (n = 8) transcriptions in full verbatim about learning anatomy with these tools.

RESULTS

Four themes were found: perceived authenticity, basic understanding versus complexity, attitudes towards respect and care, and multimodality and guidance.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, students perceived plastinated specimens as more real and authentic, thus perceived more respect and care than 3DP models; whereas 3DP models were easy to use and prefered for learning basic anatomy.

A quality improvement apprenticeship: Gross anatomy in the time of Covid-19

The study of anatomy is a team-driven field in which anatomy instruction occurs in small groups in the laboratory with one faculty member guiding students through each anatomical region. One laboratory experience may include several small group instructors in one simultaneous learning session. In comparison, the education of future gross anatomists often happens in an apprenticeship model, where the optimal learning outcomes are met through training with an experienced mentor. It was the vision of the authors to further their education through initiating an inter-institutional exchange to apprentice with innovative mentors in order to bring new ideas back to their own gross anatomy courses. The Southeastern Conference, a consortium of the Universities in the Southern region of the United States often associated with intercollegiate sports, has a host of academic initiatives in addition to the athletic emphasis. The Southeastern Conference Faculty Travel Program is one mechanism by which the organization promotes scholarly excellence. In this case, the Faculty Travel Program provided a way for authors from the University of Kentucky to visit a nearby institution, Vanderbilt University, and learn from like-minded anatomy educators, with the goal of incorporating changes in their courses geared toward quality improvement. After this implementation, positive themes emerged in the student feedback on course evaluations. However, the collaboration was interrupted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This article examines the strengths of interinstitutional apprenticeship and the benefits of such practices in a time of accelerated change in anatomical instruction.

No cuts, no buts: Satisfaction of first-year medical students with a hybrid prosection-based model for learning gross anatomy during the Covid-19 pandemic

Few realized the extent of disruption that the Covid-19 global pandemic would impose upon higher anatomical education. While many institutions were obliged to adopt a fully-remote online model, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine strove to develop a curriculum that would allow medical students to receive an in-person anatomy education. A hybrid model that emphasized learning from prosected cadavers and self-study stations was implemented, with the remainder of the students' time directed toward studying at home. Through an anonymous survey aimed at gleaning student satisfaction, this study demonstrates that this hybrid prosection-based anatomy course aligned with student preferences both assuming no health risk (64.6% agreed) and given the current risk of contracting Covid-19 (78.5% agreed). Generally, students felt that their education was equal to that of previous years (Likert scale = 3.24 ± 1.05), fostered an appreciation for anatomy (4.56 ± 0.59), promoted teamwork (4.13 ± 0.85), and prepared them for practical examinations (4.18 ± 0.74). Linear mixed-effect models demonstrated that specific differences in results could be attributed to students' preconceived preferences toward student-led dissections and to past medical training. Importantly, most students "disagree" (1.97 ± 1.00) that they were concerned about the risk of exposure to Covid-19 during in-person anatomy laboratory sessions. Areas requiring improvement were identified by the model, including the provision of access to the cadavers outside of the regularly scheduled laboratory times (3.89 ± 1.08). These findings should be utilized when designing future gross anatomy courses in response to the "new normal".

A validated instrument measuring students' perceptions on plastinated and three-dimensional printed anatomy tools

Due to the modernization of the medical curriculum and technological advancements, anatomy education has evolved beyond cadaveric dissection alone. Plastination techniques, three-dimensional (3D) modeling, and 3D printing technologies have progressively gained importance. However, there are limited valid and reliable surveys to evaluate students' perceptions of these new anatomy tools. Hence, this study aimed to develop a validated instrument to measure students' learning satisfaction, self-efficacy, humanistic values, and perceived limitations of plastinated and 3D printed models. A 41-item survey (five-point Likert scale, 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree) was administered to Year 1 undergraduate medical students following a randomized controlled crossover study that evaluated plastinated and 3D printed cardiac and neck models. Ninety-six responses were received, and a factor analysis was performed with the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin sampling adequacy of 0.878. The confirmatory factor analysis yielded a 4-factor, 19 items model that had a good fit with the latent constructs of x ² (147) = 211.568, P < 0.001, root mean square error of approximation = 0.068, root mean square residual = 0.064, comparative fit index = 0.946, and Tucker Lewis index = 0.937. The Cronbach's alpha for the individual factors ranged from 0.74 to 0.95, indicating good internal consistency. This demonstrated a psychometrically valid and reliable instrument to measure students' perceptions toward plastinated and 3D printed models.

Digital Transformation Will Change Medical Education and Rehabilitation in Spine Surgery

The concept of minimally invasive spine therapy (MIST) has been proposed as a treatment strategy to reduce the need for overall patient care, including not only minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) but also conservative treatment and rehabilitation. To maximize the effectiveness of patient care in spine surgery, the educational needs of medical students, residents, and patient rehabilitation can be enhanced by digital transformation (DX), including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR), three-dimensional (3D) medical images and holograms; wearable sensors, high-performance video cameras, fifth-generation wireless system (5G) and wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), artificial intelligence, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). Furthermore, to comply with the guidelines for social distancing due to the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, the use of DX to maintain healthcare and education is becoming more innovative than ever before. In medical education, with the evolution of science and technology, it has become mandatory to provide a highly interactive educational environment and experience using DX technology for residents and medical students, known as digital natives. This study describes an approach to pre- and intraoperative medical education and postoperative rehabilitation using DX in the field of spine surgery that was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and will be utilized thereafter.

Donor Oath: Respect to the Mortal Teacher to Learn Ethics and Humanitarian Values of Anatomy

The basic framework of the term "respect" is equality recognition. Students and teachers in academic institutions can have varying definitions of respect. Respect in the learning environment is critical for student success. This study aims to look into how students' perceptions of the human body in the anatomy lab and their respect for them can be used to promote ethical obligations, humanitarian principles, and their interrelationships. It is a descriptive, questionnaire-based study with 20 questions and a consent form that involves 250 students in the first year of MBBS. Using Microsoft Excel 2019, the data were collected, tabulated, and interpreted using descriptive statistics. The donor oath is a way to emphasize that the human body in front of them was once alive. The donor oath establishes the groundwork for future efforts to adapt existing frameworks for ethical decision-making and humanitarian values.

Lessons from Cadaver Dissection during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The rapid increase of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic from mid-February 2020 has led the anatomy department of the Korea University College of Medicine to cease the dissection laboratory. However, the hands-on anatomy laboratory experience is paramount to maximizing learning outcomes. In this paper, we share the experiences and lessons learned through the face-to-face cadaveric dissection experience during this disruptive situation. To minimize infection risks, the following strategies were applied: first, students' on-campus attendance was reduced; second, body temperatures and symptoms were checked before entering the laboratory, and personal protective equipment was provided to all participants; and third, a negative pressure air circulation system was used in the dissection room. We suggest that conducting face-to-face cadaveric anatomy dissection is feasible when the daily count of newly infected cases stabilizes, and there is ample provision of safety measures to facilitate hands-on education.

In death there is life: perceptions of the university community regarding body donation for educational purposes in the United Arab Emirates

Human body dissection is the traditional instructional method for anatomy education worldwide, providing a kinaesthetic learning experience that is often challenging to achieve with other teaching techniques. However, due to lack of body donation programs in Middle Eastern medical schools, dead bodies are imported from abroad. Since literature suggests that the body shortage is influenced by reluctance to donate one's body, this study aimed to determine the perceptions of faculty, staff, and students regarding body donation for educational purposes at a new Dubai-based medical school. An online dually translated questionnaire was administered to the target population (322), of which 150 participants representative of faculty, staff, and students, responded. Although 111 (74.0 %) of participants considered body donation to be appropriate for educational and research purposes, only 44 (29.3 %) of participants expressed willingness to donate their bodies. Reluctance to donate 106 (70.7 %) appeared to be mostly influenced by religion, psychological barrier, and familial reasons. The emergence of four themes (i.e., resource, barrier, humanitarian, and awareness) and the identification of a potential donor group within the group that was willing to donate provided insight into the level of awareness within the university community. Furthermore, such findings may assist to establish future body donation programs and strategize recruitment approaches, especially when there is an ensuing dearth of anatomical donations.

Exploration of the changes in the perceptions of medical students about cadaver dissections using metaphors

Objective

This study examines the changes in metaphors used by medical students before and after the dissection of a cadaver. This will help qualitatively understand the meaning of cadaver dissections.

Methods

The metaphorical expressions about the practice of dissection that were used before and after the dissection exercises were collected from 147 Korean medical students. The collected qualitative data were categorised through a repeated comparative analysis.

Results

The results of the analysis identified seven types of metaphors that were used before the dissection practice: ‘rite of passage’, ‘first step’, ‘precious opportunity’, ‘fog’, ‘hell’, ‘thrill’, and ‘double-edged sword’. After the cadaver dissection, nine types of metaphors were used: ‘introspection’, ‘hell’, ‘precious opportunity’, ‘treasure hunt’, ‘turning point’, ‘debt’, ‘mist’, ‘bittersweet candy’, and ‘buzzer beater’. In general, before a cadaver dissection, students recognised the importance of the practice of cadaver dissection as being a ‘gateway’ or a ‘growing pain’. Metaphors such as ‘introspection’ and ‘mirror’ were used with an improved attitude. However, some students continued to use negative metaphors, such as ‘hell’, before and after the cadaver dissection and maintained negative feelings about it.

Conclusions

The results of our study suggest that, for many medical students, cadaver dissection is a crucial stage of self-reflection and for the formation of their identities as doctors. The consideration of students’ perceptions during all cadaver dissections is therefore essential.

Emerging from emergency pandemic pedagogy: A survey of anatomical educators in the United Kingdom and Ireland

It is critical that academic opinion of pandemic pedagogy is comprehensively quantified in order to inform future practices. Thus, this study examines how anatomists in the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (ROI) perceive the teaching adaptations made in response to COVID-19, and how these adaptations have impacted their experiences teaching, their online work environment and community. Data was collected via a questionnaire from 24 anatomists across 15 universities in the UK (11) and ROI (4). With regards to teaching, 95.6% of academics have upskilled in new technologies to meet the demands of distance teaching. Academics (95.8%) preferred face-to-face delivery of practical sessions. Most universities (80.0%) reported that practical sessions will continue in a new form that ensures social distancing. However, 50.0% of academics are uncertain if these adaptations will improve student learning. Many anatomists believe that the new adaptations may hinder student-student (66.7%) and student-tutor (45.8%) interactions. Regarding assessment, 52.6% of academics preferred traditional methods to online. Remote online assessment was difficult to protect against collusion, but provided time saving opportunities for academics. Finally, in terms of working environment, 83.3% of academics stated that their workload increased; 54.2% preferred working on site rather than remotely and 79.2% think that staff interactions are better when working on site. These results demonstrate a widespread concern amongst anatomists regarding the pandemic-induced adaptations to teaching, assessment and working environment. However, important opportunities were also identified that could ultimately serve to benefit students and educators alike.

One-month long foundation course for newly joined Indian medical undergraduates: Faculty and students' perspective

Background

A one-month long foundation course has been introduced at the entry-level for first-year MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) students in the medical institutions across India from 2019. Therefore, the present study is aimed at describing the experience of implementing a one-month long foundation course conducted for the Competency-based Undergraduate Medical Curriculum (CBUC) of Indian Medical Graduate as per the guidelines from the National Medical Commission (NMC) (erstwhile Medical Council of India, MCI). We have evaluated the student and faculty perceptions towards the effectiveness of the program.

Methods

The foundation course had six modules Orientation, Skills, Field visit to Community Health Centre, Professional Development including Ethics, Sports and Extracurricular activities, Computer Skills, and Language enhancement program. Regular feedback wascollected from students (N = 250) and teachers (N = 26) involved in the Foundation course using a semi-structured questionnaire. The program's overall feedback was also obtained at the end of the course, using a validated questionnaire. The quantitative findings were expressed in frequency and percentage. The qualitative observations (reflections of students and faculty) were subjected to thematic.

Results

The students and faculty appreciated the one-month long foundation course. The course's defined objectives were met as indicated by most students (98.4%) and faculty (75%). The course seemed to be useful for students to embark on a formal MBBS curriculum. It also exposed them to new knowledge and practices, as indicated by the feedback. Thematic analysis of the students' and faculty's reflections was carried out and two themes were identified, i.e., 'strengths' and 'challenges.' The Foundation Course Committee will work out appropriate remedial measures to overcome the challenges in the future sessions for subsequent batches.

Conclusions

The one-month-long foundation course was found to be beneficial for newly joined students to get introduced and adjusted to higher education systems' demands. Also, the challenges faced during the program needs to be addressed with suitable remedial measures while implementing for subsequent batches. This effort will ensure a smooth conduct of the foundation course for the future batches of medical undergraduates and make the program more effective.

Adaptations in Anatomy Education during COVID-19

BACKGROUND

The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has profoundly affected education, with most universities changing face-to-face classes to online formats. To adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, we adopted a blended learning approach to anatomy instruction that included online lectures, pre-recorded laboratory dissection videos, and 3D anatomy applications, with condensed offline cadaver dissection.

METHODS

We aimed to examine the learning outcomes of a newly adopted anatomy educational approach by 1) comparing academic achievement between the blended learning group (the 2020 class, 108 students) and the traditional classroom learning group (the 2019 class, 104 students), and 2) an online questionnaire survey on student preference on the learning method and reasons of preference.

RESULTS

The average anatomy examination scores of the 2020 class, who took online lectures and blended dissection laboratories, were significantly higher than those of the 2019 class, who participated in an offline lecture and dissection laboratories. The questionnaire survey revealed that students preferred online lectures over traditional large group lecture-based teaching because it allowed them to acquire increased self-study time, study according to their individual learning styles, and repeatedly review lecture videos.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that a blended learning approach is an effective method for anatomy learning, and the advantage may result from increased self-directed study through online learning.

A review of anatomy education during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: Revisiting traditional and modern methods to achieve future innovation

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had enormous effects on anatomy education. During the pandemic, students have had no access to cadavers, which has been the principal way to learn anatomy since the 17th century. As it is difficult to predict future access to cadavers for students or in-person classes, anatomy educators are encouraged to revisit all possible teaching methods in order to develop innovations. Here, we review anatomy education methods to apply to current and future education.

Cultivation of humanistic values in medical education through anatomy pedagogy and gratitude ceremony for body donors

BACKGROUND

One of the most important objectives of modern medical education is to empower medical students to become humanistic clinicians. Human anatomy plays a crucial role in this mission by using cadavers to cause reflections on death, dying, illness, and the role of medical practitioners in humanistic care. The objective of this study was to introduce, describe, and evaluate the impact of a ceremony in honor of the body donors on ethical and humanistic attitudes of medical students.

METHODS

We used a phenomenological research approach to explore and understand the lived experiences of the anatomy teachers as they teach anatomy in the context of humanism and ethics. A separate survey of third-year medical students was carried out to understand their perceptions of changes in themselves, respect for donors and donor families, and their relationship with patients. Data were collected in two phases: a desktop review of teaching materials followed by in-depth interviews of the main anatomy teachers followed by a self-administered, 5-item Likert scaled questionnaire given to students.

RESULTS

In the present article, we describe the rituals conducted in honor of body donors at our School of Medicine. We also describe the lived experiences of anatomy teachers as they work on improving humanistic education quality through the introduction of the concept of "silent mentor" which refers to a cadaver that quietly allows medical students to learn from it. In turn, a ceremony in honor of body donors who have altruistically donated their bodies so that learning anatomy through dissection would be possible is also introduced. A survey of the impact of the ceremony in honor of body donors on medical students revealed positive responses in terms of promoting studying anatomy (3.96 Vs 3.95) as well as reflections on own death (4.44 Vs 4.35), the life of body donors (4.07 Vs 4.04), and how to humanely view future patients and their significant others (4.32 Vs 4.24) relative to those that did not attend the ceremony (5-item Likert scale). The majority of the students that attended the ceremony also indicated that it had a positive impact on their future doctor-patient relationship, thinking about the possibility of donating their body for teaching as well as about medical ethics. Most of them also think that attending the ceremony helped reduce their anxiety, fear, and disgust of seeing corpses or dissecting and 90% insisted that memorial ceremonies should continue being conducted at Zhongshan Medical School.

CONCLUSION

The combination of the anatomy component of the basic medical curriculum and gratitude ceremonies as well as activities to promote body bequeathal programs might help to accomplish the goal of cultivating high-quality medical students and professionals for the future. The long-term benefits would be a medical graduate who exudes empathy, relates well with patients and their significant others, leading to a productive doctor-patient relationship.
