Abstract
Peppers are fruits that grow on plants of the genus Capsicum and are popular for their use in gastronomy as a condiment and for their anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties due to their phytocompounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, or alkaloids. Semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using a green approach employing natural aqueous extracts of several varieties of peppers (jalapeño, morita, and ghost). The obtained NPs were characterized by different techniques, and their photocatalytic and antibacterial activity was studied. The signal at 620 cm-1 in the FTIR spectra belonging to the Zn-O bond, the appearance of the main peaks of a hexagonal wurtzite structure in the XRD pattern, and the characteristic signals in the UV-Vis spectra confirm the correct formation of ZnO NPs. The photocatalytic activity was analyzed against Methylene Blue (MB), Rhodamine B (RB), and Methyl Orange (MO) under UV and sunlight. All syntheses were able to degrade more than 93% of the pollutants under UV light. Antibacterial assays were performed against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. All syntheses exhibited antibacterial activity against all bacteria and maximum growth inhibition against Bacillus subtilis. The prominent results demonstrate that natural aqueous extracts obtained from peppers can be used to synthesize ZnO NPs with photocatalytic and biomedical applications.

Abstract
In this study, 104 RIL (Recombinant Inbred Pepper Lines: F6) populations which generated by selfing Capsicum annuum (Long pepper) × Capsicum frutescens (PI281420) F6 population were characterized in terms of detailed bioactive properties, major phenolic composition, tocopherol and capsaicinoid profile. Total phenolics, flavonoid and total anthocyanin contents of the red pepper lines were in the range of 7.06-17.15 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dw, 1.10-5.46 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g dw and 7.9-516.6 mg/kg dw extract, respectively. Antiradical activity and antioxidant capacity values also ranged between 18.99 and 49.73% and 6.97-16.47 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/kg dw, respectively. Capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin levels showed a wide variance with the range of 27.9-1405.9 and 12.3-640.4 mg/100 g dw, respectively. Scoville heat unit revealed that the 95% of the peppers were highly pungent. The major tocopherol was alpha tocopherol for the pepper samples with the highest level of 1078.4 µg/g dw. The major phenolics were detected as p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, myricetin, luteolin and quercetin. Pepper genotypes showed significant differences in terms of the characterized properties and principal component analysis was applied successfully to reveal the similar genotypes.

Abstract
The members of ZRT, IRT-like protein (ZIP) family are involved in the uptake and transportation of several metal ions. Here, we report a comprehensive identification of ZIP transporter genes from Capsicum annuum, C. chinense, and C. baccatum, and their expression analysis under Zn and Fe stress. Changes in root morphology and differential accumulation of several metabolites from sugars, amino acids, carboxylic acids, and fatty acids in root and leaf tissues of plants in the absence of Zn and Fe were observed. Further, metabolites such as L-aspartic acid, 2-ketoglutaric acids, β-L-fucopyranose, quininic acid, chlorogenic acid, and aucubin were significantly upregulated in root and leaf tissues under Zn/Fe deprived conditions. qRT-PCR analysis of 17 CaZIPs in different tissues revealed tissue-specific expression of CaZIP1-2, CaZIP4-8, CaZIP13, and CaZIP16-17 under normal conditions. However, the absence of Zn and Fe significantly induced the expression of CaZIP4-5, CaZIP7-9, and CaZIP14 genes in root and leaf tissues. Additionally, in the absence of Fe, upregulation of CaZIP4-5 and CaZIP8 and increased uptake of mineral elements Cu, Zn, Mg, P, and S were observed in roots, suggesting their potential role in metal-ion uptake in Capsicum. The identified genes provide the basis for future studies of mineral uptake and their biofortification to increase the nutritional values in Capsicum.

Abstract
Pepper is one of the most vitamin C enriched vegetables worldwide. Although applying nitrogen (N) fertilizer is an important practice for high fruit yield in pepper production, it is still unclear how N application regulates pepper fruit vitamin C anabolism at different maturity stage. To further the understanding, we combined physiological and metabolomic analysis to investigate the fruit vitamin C content (including ascorbic acid (AsA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA)), related enzyme activity and non-targeted metabolites of field-grown chili pepper produced under different N levels at mature green and red stages. The results showed that increasing N application reduced AsA content in pepper fruit at both maturity stages, but highly elevated DHA content only at mature green stage. Regardless of N application level, AsA content displayed an increasing trend while DHA content was reduced as pepper fruit maturity advanced, resulting in a higher content of total vitamin C at the mature green stage. The L-galactose pathway, D-galacturonate pathway, and myo-inositol pathway were identified for AsA biosynthesis. The involved precursor metabolites were mainly negatively regulated by increasing N application, and their accumulation increased when pepper fruit developed from green to red stage. Meanwhile, the activities of key enzymes and metabolites in relation to degradation and recycling processes of AsA and DHA were increased or did not change with increasing N application, and they were differently influenced as fruit maturing. As a result, the recommended N application level (250 kg N ha-1) could maintain relatively high total vitamin C content in pepper fruits without yield loss at both maturity stages. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing N application level to maximize vitamin C content in pepper fruits, and provide a better understanding of the maturity stage-dependent N regulation on vitamin C anabolism.

Abstract
Peppers (Capsicum sp.) are used both as vegetables and/or spice and their fruits are used in a plethora of recipes, contributing to their flavor and aroma. Among flavor-related traits, pungency (capsaicinoids) and lately volatiles have been considered the most important factors. However, the knowledge of sugars is low, probably due to the fact peppers were historically considered tasteless. Here, using HPLC, we studied the content and profile of major sugars and capsaicinoids in a comprehensive collection of varietal types (genotype, G), grown under different growing systems (environment, E) in two years (Y) and considered the two main ripening stages (R). We found a major contribution to the ripening stage and the genotype in total and individual sugars and capsaicinoids. The year was also significant in most cases, as well as the G × E and G × Y interactions, while the growing system was low or nil. Ripening increased considerably in sugars (from 19.6 to 36.1 g kg-1 on average) and capsaicinoids (from 97 to 142 mg kg-1 on average), with remarkable differences among varieties. Moreover, sugars in fully ripe fruits ranged between 7.5 and 38.5 g kg-1 in glucose and between 5.2 and 34.3 g kg-1 in fructose, and several accessions reached total sugars between 40 and 70 g kg-1, similar to tomatoes. The results reveal the importance of the genotype and the ripening for these traits, particularly sugars, which should be considered key for the improvement of taste and flavor in peppers.

Abstract
Hybrid breeding is one of the efficacious methods of crop improvement. Here, we report our work towards understanding the molecular basis of F1 hybrid heterosis from Capsicum chinense and C. frutescens cross. Bisulfite sequencing identified a total of 70597 CG, 108797 CHG, and 38418 CHH differentially methylated regions (DMRs) across F1 hybrid and parents, and of these, 4891 DMRs showed higher methylation in F1 compared to the mid-parental methylation values (MPMV). Transcriptome analysis showed higher expression of 46–55% differentially expressed genes (DE-Gs) in the F1 hybrid. The qRT-PCR analysis of 24 DE-Gs with negative promoter methylation revealed 91.66% expression similarity with the transcriptome data. A few metabolites and 65–72% enriched genes in metabolite biosynthetic pathways showed overall increased expression in the F1 hybrid compared to parents. These findings, taken together, provided insights into the integrated role of DNA methylation, and genes and metabolites expression in the manifestation of heterosis in Capsicum. Abstract
To date, several transcriptomic studies during fruit development have been reported; however, no comprehensive integrated study on expression diversity, alternative splicing, and metabolomic profiling was reported in Capsicum. This study analyzed RNA-seq data and untargeted metabolomic profiling from early green (EG), mature green (MG), and breaker (Br) fruit stages from two Capsicum species, i.e., C. annuum (Cann) and C. frutescens (Cfrut) from Northeast India. A total of 117,416 and 96,802 alternatively spliced events (AltSpli-events) were identified from Cann and Cfrut, respectively. Among AltSpli-events, intron retention (IR; 32.2% Cann and 25.75% Cfrut) followed by alternative acceptor (AA; 15.4% Cann and 18.9% Cfrut) were the most abundant in Capsicum. Around 7600 genes expressed in at least one fruit stage of Cann and Cfrut were AltSpli. The study identified spliced variants of genes including transcription factors (TFs) potentially involved in fruit development/ripening (Aux/IAA 16-like, ETR, SGR1, ARF, CaGLK2, ETR, CaAGL1, MADS-RIN, FUL1, SEPALLATA1), carotenoid (PDS, CA1, CCD4, NCED3, xanthoxin dehydrogenase, CaERF82, CabHLH100, CaMYB3R-1, SGR1, CaWRKY28, CaWRKY48, CaWRKY54), and capsaicinoids or flavonoid biosynthesis (CaMYB48, CaWRKY51), which were significantly differentially spliced (DS) between consecutive Capsicum fruit stages. Also, this study observed that differentially expressed isoforms (DEiso) from 38 genes with differentially spliced events (DSE) were significantly enriched in various metabolic pathways such as starch and sucrose metabolism, amino acid metabolism, cysteine cutin suberin and wax biosynthesis, and carotenoid biosynthesis. Furthermore, the metabolomic profiling revealed that metabolites from aforementioned pathways such as carbohydrates (mainly sugars such as D-fructose, D-galactose, maltose, and sucrose), organic acids (carboxylic acids), and peptide groups significantly altered during fruit development. Taken together, our findings could help in alternative splicing-based targeted studies of candidate genes involved in fruit development and ripening in Capsicum crop.

Abstract
The main purpose of the present study was toinvestigate the influence of genotypes on the volatile, flavonoid-related compounds and antioxidant capacities of chilli peppers. A set of 49 volatiles were identified in the chilli peppers using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). The flavonoid-related profiles were established by the simultaneous LC-MS measurement of 38 compounds. The results of chemometrics analysis reveal that Jize and Korean chilli peppers can be distinctly separated from each other. A panel of 18 volatile and 13 flavonoid-related variables with VIP > 1 and p < 0.05 were determined as the discriminants for Jize and Korean chilli peppers. Moreover, Korean chilli peppers showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher antioxidant activity than Jize chilli peppers. A clear and positive correlation was observed between the antioxidant potential and individual flavonoid compounds. The current findings could facilitate the valorization of chilli peppers as bioactive and functional ingredients at various commercial levels.

Abstract
Myeloblastosis (MYB) genes are important transcriptional regulators of plant growth, development, and secondary metabolic biosynthesis pathways, such as capsaicinoid biosynthesis in Capsicum. Although MYB genes have been identified in Capsicum annuum, no comprehensive study has been conducted on other Capsicum species. We identified a total of 251 and 240 MYB encoding genes in Capsicum chinense MYBs (CcMYBs) and Capsicum baccatum MYBs (CbMYBs). The observation of twenty tandem and 41 segmental duplication events indicated expansion of the MYB gene family in the C. chinense genome. Five CcMYB genes, i.e., CcMYB101, CcMYB46, CcMYB6, CcPHR8, and CcRVE5, and two CaMYBs, i.e., CaMYB3 and CaHHO1, were found within the previously reported capsaicinoid biosynthesis quantitative trait loci. Based on phylogenetic analysis with tomato MYB proteins, the Capsicum MYBs were classified into 24 subgroups supported by conserved amino acid motifs and gene structures. Also, a total of 241 CcMYBs were homologous with 225 C. annuum, 213 C. baccatum, 125 potato, 79 tomato, and 23 Arabidopsis MYBs. Synteny analysis showed that all 251 CcMYBs were collinear with C. annuum, C. baccatum, tomato, potato, and Arabidopsis MYBs spanning over 717 conserved syntenic segments. Using transcriptome data from three fruit developmental stages, a total of 54 CcMYBs and 81 CaMYBs showed significant differential expression patterns. Furthermore, the expression of 24 CcMYBs from the transcriptome data was validated by quantitative real-time (qRT) PCR analysis. Eight out of the 24 CcMYBs validated by the qRT-PCR were highly expressed in fiery hot C. chinense than in the lowly pungent C. annuum. Furthermore, the co-expression analysis revealed several MYB genes clustered with genes from the capsaicinoid, anthocyanin, phenylpropanoid, carotenoid, and flavonoids biosynthesis pathways, and related to determining fruit shape and size. The homology modeling of 126 R2R3 CcMYBs showed high similarity with that of the Arabidopsis R2R3 MYB domain template, suggesting their potential functional similarity at the proteome level. Furthermore, we have identified simple sequence repeat (SSR) motifs in the CcMYB genes, which could be used in Capsicum breeding programs. The functional roles of the identified CcMYBs could be studied further so that they can be manipulated for Capsicum trait improvement.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate whether the combination of garlic oil and cooked chilli oil is worth using for pigeon production in the context of a total ban on antibiotics in feed additives in China. Two hundred female white king pigeons aged 23 days were randomly divided into five groups with ten replicates (four birds each). In the 47 days trial, the control group was fed with a basal diet, treatment groups were given a basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg neomycin sulphate or 2 g/kg corresponding oil (garlic oil or cooked chilli oil or their mixture) respectively. The mixed oil showed obvious antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacterium and its minimal bactericidal concentration against St. aureus, Salmonella and Escherichia coli were all no more than 1.0 mg/ml. In the feeding experiment, pigeons feed with garlic oil with strong bacteriostatic activity had lower FCR and better protein metabolism, and chilli oil showed strong effects of promoting feed intake and weight gain on pigeons but increased serum glucose and lipid content. Compared with the control and the antibiotic group, the mixed oil got increased growth performance, less drip loss of meat, better protein metabolism promoting, and more complete intestinal structure of pigeon. In addition, the breast meat in the mixed oil group had higher total points in the sensory test. The mixed oil combined the strong bacteriostasis of garlic oil with the feeding promotion effect of cooked chilli oil, it improved the comprehensive performance of pigeons and had the feasibility to be popularized as a non-antibiotic strategy in pigeon production.
