Abstract
In present study the effect of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) contamination was assessed by modeling a freshwater food web of water, zooplankton (Daphnia pulex), and zebrafish (Danio rerio) under laboratory conditions. Metals were added to the rearing media of D. pulex, and enriched zooplankton was fed to zebrafish in a feeding trial. The elemental analysis of rearing water, zooplankton, and fish revealed significant difference in the treatments compared to the control. In D. pulex the Mn level increased almost in parallel with the dose of supplementation, as well as the Fe level differed statistically. A negative influence of the supplementation on the fish growth was observed: specific growth rate (SGR%) and weight gain (WG) decreased in Fe and Mn containing treatments. The redundancy analysis (RDA) of concentration data showed strong correlation between the rearing water and D. pulex, as well as the prey organism of Fe- and Mn-enriched D. pulex and the predator organism of D. rerio. The bioconcentration factors (BCF) calculated for water to zooplankton further proved the relationship between the Fe and Mn dosage applied in the treatments and measured in D. pulex. Trophic transfer factor (TTF) results also indicate that significant retention of the metals occurred in D. rerio individuals, however, in a much lower extent than in the water to zooplankton stage. Our study suggests that Fe and Mn significantly accumulate in the lower part of the trophic chain and retention is effective through the digestive track of zebrafish, yet no biomagnification occurs. Abstract
The gut microbiota has a crucial role in host physiology and fitness. Host-microbiota relationships can be disrupted by environmental stressors, which further affect host growth and survival. However, the link between host performance and the gut microbiota composition shaped by increasing antibiotic pollution under different food conditions is not clearly understood. In the present study, we used Daphnia magna as a model organism to investigate the interactive effects of diets (Chlorella with or without Microcystis) and antibiotics on its life history traits, gut microbiota alterations, and their relationship. The results showed that poor diet consumption by D. magna at low and high antibiotic concentrations reduced reproduction and survival. Under good diet conditions, the fitness was reduced only at a high antibiotic concentration. Under good diet conditions, high concentration of antibiotics reduced the abundance of Comamonadaceae and increased the abundance of Pseudomonadaceae, whereas under poor diet conditions, both low and high concentrations of antibiotics increased the abundance of Pseudomonadaceae. Performances of life history traits were positively correlated with an increased abundance of Comamonadaceae but were negatively correlated with increased Pseudomonadaceae abundance. The results of this study revealed the interactive effects of diet and antibiotics on D. magna fitness and correlations between bacterial abundance and life history traits, which has important implications for understanding the effects of pollutants on host-microbiota interactions through changes in phenotypes.

Abstract
Procaine penicillin (PP) is a β-lactam antibiotic widely used in human and veterinary medicine. Although PP is detected in surface water, little is known on its effects on aquatic invertebrates. Our aim was to determine the influence of PP on swimming behaviour (track density, swimming speed, turning angle, hopping frequency) and physiological activity (oxygen consumption, heart rate, thoracic limb movement) of a freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna exposed to PP at concentrations of 11.79 mg/L, 117.9 mg/L and 1179 mg/L for 2 h and 24 h. The results showed no mortality; however, reduction of swimming activity manifested by the decreased track density, swimming speed and turning angle noted in Daphnia exposed to all the concentrations of PP. Increase of oxygen consumption was observed after 2-h exposure; however, decrease of this parameter was found after 24 h. PP also reduced heart rate and thoracic limb movement in a concentration-dependent manner. The results suggest that the antibiotic should not induce mortality; however, it may affect swimming behaviour and physiological parameters of Daphnia magna particularly inhabiting aquaculture facilities with intensive antibiotic treatment. On the basis of the present results, we also suggest higher sensitivity of behavioural and physiological parameters of cladocerans than the commonly used endpoints: mortality or immobilisation and their possible application as a part of early warning systems in monitoring of surface water toxicity.
