Inherent optical properties and satellite retrieval of chlorophyll concentration in the lagoon and open ocean waters of New Caledonia

Bioavailability of chromium, nickel, iron and manganese in relation to their speciation in coastal sediments downstream of ultramafic catchments: A case study in New Caledonia

Coastal sediments downstream of ultramafic catchments can show Ni and Cr concentration well above sediment quality guidelines. Despite their potential ecological impact, the bioavailability of these trace metals in such sedimentary settings has been poorly investigated. In this study, we tried to fill this gap by performing kinetic EDTA-extractions across a shore-to-reef gradient in lagoon sediments downstream of an ultramafic catchment in New Caledonia and interpreting the results in regard of synchrotron-derived speciation. Measured bioavailability ranged from very low for Cr (below 1% of total Cr) to medium for Ni (below 5% of total Ni). Both trace metals showed a decreasing shore-to-reef bioavailability gradient reflecting the larger deposition of ultramafic sediments close to the shore. According to synchrotron-derived speciation data, the very low bioavailability of Cr is attributed to its major occurrence as Cr(III)-bearing Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides and phyllosilicates, with no evidence of Cr(VI). Considering the low occurrence of Fe-sulfides, the medium bioavailability of Ni is considered to arise mainly from the reductive dissolution of Ni-bearing Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides during early diagenesis. This reaction also explains the medium bioavailability of Fe (up to 15% of total Fe) and the positive correlation observed with Total Organic Carbon (TOC). In this regard, this latter parameter appears as a major driver of Ni and Fe bioavailability in coastal sediments downstream of ultramafic catchments. On the opposite, in the absence of Mn-oxides, TOC has no influence on Mn bioavailability (up to 30% of total Mn) that appears more likely driven by sediment sources. From an ecological point of view, considering the Australian and New-Zealand High Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ANZ-ISQG-H), Cr should not represent a significant risk towards benthic communities in coastal sediments downstream of ultramafic catchments. On the opposite, Ni, Fe and Mn might represent an ecological risk that should be further investigated in such sedimentary settings.

Unsupervised Optical Classification of the Seabed Color in Shallow Oligotrophic Waters from Sentinel-2 Images: A Case Study in the Voh-Koné-Pouembout Lagoon (New Caledonia)

Monitoring chlorophyll-a concentration or turbidity is crucial for understanding and managing oligo- to mesotrophic coastal waters quality. However, mapping bio-optical components from space in such shallow settings remains challenging because of the strong interference of the complex bathymetry and various seabed colors. Correcting the total satellite reflectance signal from the seabed reflectance in ocean color with high resolution sensors is promising. This article shows how unsupervised clustering approaches can be applied to Sentinel-2 images to classify seabed colors in shallow waters of a tropical oligotrophic lagoon in New Caledonia. Data processing included Lyzenga correction for estimating the water column reflectance, optical spectra standardization for attenuating water absorption effects and clustering using the unsupervised k-means method. This methodological approach was applied on the 497, 560, 664 and 704 nm optical bands of the selected Sentinel-2 image. When applied on non-standardized data, our unsupervised classification retrieved three seafloor clusters, whereas five seafloor clusters could be retrieved using standardized data. For each of these two trials, the computed membership values explained more than 75% of the inertia in each Sentinel-2 wavelength band used for the clustering. However, the accuracy of the method was slightly improved when applied on standardized data. Confusion index mapping of the unsupervised clustering retrieved from these data emphasized the relevance and robustness of our methodological approach. Such an approach for seabed colors classification in optically complex shallow settings will be particularly helpful to improve remote sensing of biogeochemical indicators such as chlorophyll-a concentration and turbidity in fragile coastal environments.

Nickel and iron partitioning between clay minerals, Fe-oxides and Fe-sulfides in lagoon sediments from New Caledonia

In the tropics, continental weathering and erosion are major sources of trace metals towards estuaries and lagoons, where early diagenesis of sediments may influence their mobility and bioavailability. Determining trace metals speciation in tropical sedimentary settings is thus needed to assess their long-term fate and potential threat to fragile coastal ecosystems. In this study, we determined Fe, Ni and S speciation across a shore-to-reef gradient in sediments from the New Caledonia lagoon that receive mixed contribution from lateritic (iron-oxyhydroxides and clay minerals), volcano-sedimentary (silicates) and marine (carbonate) sources. Sulfur K-edge XANES data indicated a major contribution of pyrite (FeS₂) to S speciation close to the shore. However, this contribution was found to dramatically decrease across the shore-to-reef gradient, S mainly occurring as sulfate close to the coral reef. In contrast, Fe and Ni K-edge XANES and EXAFS data indicated a minor contribution of pyrite to Fe and Ni speciation, and this contribution could be evidenced only close to the shore. The major fractions of Fe and Ni across the shore-to-reef gradient were found to occur as Ni- and Fe-bearing clay minerals consisting of smectite (~nontronite), glauconite and two types of serpentines (chrysotile and greenalite/berthierine). Among these clay minerals, greenalite/berthierine, glauconite and possibly smectite, were considered as authigenic. The low contribution of pyrite to trace metals speciation compared to clay minerals is interpreted as a result of (1) a reduced formation rate due to the low amounts of organic carbon compared to the Fe pool and (2) repeated re-oxidation events upon re-suspension of the sediments top layers due to the specific context of shallow lagoon waters. This study thus suggests that green clay authigenesis could represent a key process in the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals that are delivered to lagoon ecosystems upon continental erosion and weathering.

Distributions and Abundances of Sublineages of the N2-Fixing Cyanobacterium Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa (UCYN-A) in the New Caledonian Coral Lagoon

Nitrogen (N₂) fixation is a major source of nitrogen that supports primary production in the vast oligotrophic areas of the world’s oceans. The Western Tropical South Pacific has recently been identified as a hotspot for N₂ fixation. In the Noumea lagoon (New Caledonia), high abundances of the unicellular N₂-fixing cyanobacteria group A (UCYN-A), coupled with daytime N₂ fixation rates associated with the <10 μm size fraction, suggest UCYN-A may be an important diazotroph (N₂-fixer) in this region. However, little is known about the seasonal variability and diversity of UCYN-A there. To assess this, surface waters from a 12 km transect from the mouth of the Dumbea River to the Dumbea Pass were sampled monthly between July 2012 and March 2014. UCYN-A abundances for two of the defined sublineages, UCYN-A1 and UCYN-A2, were quantified using qPCR targeting the nifH gene, and the nifH-based diversity of UCYN-A was characterized by identifying oligotypes, alternative taxonomic units defined by nucleotide positions with high variability. UCYN-A abundances were dominated by the UCYN-A1 sublineage, peaked in September and October and could be predicted by a suite of nine environmental parameters. At the sublineage level, UCYN-A1 abundances could be predicted based on lower temperatures (<23°C), nitrate concentrations, precipitation, wind speed, while UCYN-A2 abundances could be predicted based on silica, and chlorophyll a concentrations, wind direction, precipitation, and wind speed. Using UCYN-A nifH oligotyping, similar environmental variables explained the relative abundances of sublineages and their associated oligotypes, with the notable exception of the UCYN-A2 oligotype (oligo43) which had relative abundance patterns distinct from the dominant UCYN-A2 oligotype (oligo3). The results support an emerging pattern that UCYN-A is comprised of a diverse group of strains, with sublineages that may have different ecological niches. By identifying environmental factors that influence the composition and abundance of UCYN-A sublineages, this study helps to explain global UCYN-A abundance patterns, and is important for understanding the significance of N₂ fixation at local and global scales.

Atmospheric correction and inherent optical property estimation in the southwest New Caledonia lagoon using AVNIR-2 high-resolution data

Retrievals of inherent optical properties (IOPs) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla) were investigated for AVNIR-2 images with 30 m spatial resolution and four bands in the southwest tropical lagoon of New Caledonia. We corrected the atmospheric and sea-surface reflectance iteratively through the retrieval of IOPs. After an additional correction of seafloor reflectance, the estimated IOPs and Chla agreed well with the in situ measurements even in the lagoon areas. This study provides a method to allow a local optimal estimation of IOPs and Chla with a high-resolution sensor by preparing the candidate spectra for the target areas.

Modelling the impact of a La Niña event on a South West Pacific Lagoon

In view of increasing environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation, understanding the main forcing mechanism driving biogeochemical cycles in coral reefs and lagoon coastal areas is a priority. La Niña events cause unbalanced situations in the Equatorial Pacific and result in enhanced precipitation in South West Pacific coastal areas. We investigated the impact of heavy rainfalls during the 2008 La Niña event on the New Caledonia lagoon using a 3D coupled on-line hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model. Simulations and data showed that the whole lagoon was impacted by river inputs and stronger hydrodynamics, enhancing chlorophyll-a concentration by a factor between 1.7 and 1.9. The coupled model provided new insights into plume transport, highlighting that eastern plumes can be advected northwards or can reach the South West Lagoon, depending on the balance between regional, tide-induced, and wind-induced surface currents. It also provided a synoptic view of lagoon biogeochemical-hydrodynamic response, when remote sensing data are not available due to cloud coverage.

An approach to developing numeric water quality criteria for coastal waters using the SeaWiFS Satellite Data Record

Human activities on land increase nutrient loads to coastal waters, which can increase phytoplankton production and biomass and associated ecological impacts. Numeric nutrient water quality standards are needed to protect coastal waters from eutrophication impacts. The Environmental Protection Agency determined that numeric nutrient criteria were necessary to protect designated uses of Florida's waters. The objective of this study was to evaluate a reference condition approach for developing numeric water quality criteria for coastal waters, using data from Florida. Florida's coastal waters have not been monitored comprehensively via field sampling to support numeric criteria development. However, satellite remote sensing had the potential to provide adequate data. Spatial and temporal measures of SeaWiFS OC4 chlorophyll-a (Chl(RS)-a, mg m(-3)) were resolved across Florida's coastal waters between 1997 and 2010 and compared with in situ measurements. Statistical distributions of Chl(RS)-a were evaluated to determine a quantitative reference baseline. A binomial approach was implemented to consider how new data could be assessed against the criteria. The proposed satellite remote sensing approach to derive numeric criteria may be generally applicable to other coastal waters.

Observed impact of upwelling events on water properties and biological activity off the southwest coast of New Caledonia

The upwelling events that follow strong trade wind episodes have been described in terms of their remarkable signature in the sea surface temperature southwest off New Caledonia. Upwelling brings deeper, and colder waters to the surface, causing 2-4 degrees C drops in temperature in a few hours, followed by a slower relaxation over several days. Upwelling may sporadically bring nutrients to the surface under certain conditions, and increase the biological productivity. Two multidisciplinary hydrographic cruises allow the impact of upwelling on the chemical and biological properties of the water to be documented. Both cruises took place in austral summer (December 2004 and December 2005), but the first cruise occurred during a strong upwelling event, while the second cruise occurred in calm conditions. The water properties and planktonic composition show important contrasts, with a strong southeastward current (the "ALIS current of New Caledonia") competing with the upwelling system. Our analysis suggests that, while observed productivities are far less than those of typical upwelling systems, some wind events in New Caledonia may contribute to biological activity. A currentmeter mooring, deployed during the second cruise, documents the ocean response to a changing wind field and the local impact of upwelling on currents and temperatures on the water column. The results are discussed, with the help of climatology, Argo float profiler data, satellite data and of a high-resolution numerical simulation.

Circulation and suspended sediment transport in a coral reef lagoon: the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia

The south-west lagoon of New Caledonia is a wide semi-open coral reef lagoon bounded by an intertidal barrier reef and bisected by numerous deep inlets. This paper synthesizes findings from the 2000-2008 French National Program EC2CO-PNEC relative to the circulation and the transport of suspended particles in this lagoon. Numerical model development (hydrodynamic, fine suspended sediment transport, wind-wave, small-scale atmospheric circulation) allowed the determination of circulation patterns in the lagoon and the charting of residence time, the later of which has been recently used in a series of ecological studies. Topical studies based on field measurements permitted the parameterisation of wave set-up induced by the swell breaking on the reef barrier and the validation of a wind-wave model in a fetch-limited environment. The analysis of spatial and temporal variability of suspended matter concentration over short and long time-scales, the measurement of grain size distribution and the density of suspended matter (1.27 kg l(-1)), and the estimation of erodibility of heterogeneous (sand/mud, terrigenous/biogenic) soft bottoms was also conducted. Aggregates were shown to be more abundant near or around reefs and a possible biological influence on this aggregation is discussed. Optical measurements enabled the quantification of suspended matter either in situ (monochromatic measurements) or remotely (surface spectral measurements and satellite observations) and provided indirect calibration and validation of a suspended sediment transport model. The processes that warrant further investigation in order to improve our knowledge of circulation and suspended sediment transport in the New Caledonia lagoon as well as in other coral reef areas are discussed, as are the relevance and reliability of the numerical models for this endeavour.

Modelling the spatial and temporal variability of the SW lagoon of New Caledonia II: realistic 3D simulations compared with in situ data

Coral reef lagoons are under the growing influence of anthropogenic activities, leading to increasing loads of nutrients and various contaminants. Modelling approaches are a useful tool for studying such a complex coastal environment. In this study, we carried out the development of a three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamical-biogeochemical model of the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia. The biogeochemical model presented in Faure et al. (2006, 2010) was dynamically coupled with a hydrodynamical model (MARS3D) in order to study the short-term variability of the ecosystem. Two simulations (in winter and summer) were then performed from measured initial conditions using realistic wind and irradiance conditions and river inputs. Examinations of the biogeochemical response to these transient meteorological conditions were presented and compared with temporal field data corresponding to the considered periods. Results highlighted the ecosystem functioning, based on the balance of hydrodynamical and biogeochemical processes. Influence of urban and terrigeneous inputs were limited to the coastal zone. The model accurately reproduced the measured Chl.a and bacterial production, highlighting the improvement made on the biogeochemical model. However, the underestimation of some variables in model outputs, in particular nutrients, led us to focus on different inputs, such as sediment inputs which were not taken into account or properly estimated. Moreover, the role of boundary waters appeared crucial and suggested a calibration effort. Last, the final aim of our modelling study will help the development of a useful tool for studying the key processes of the ecosystem of the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia, as well as the examination of the biogeochemical response under different scenarios.
