Dissolved trace elements in a nitrogen-polluted river near to the Liaodong Bay in Northeast China

Trace elements in aquatic products from Shenzhen, China and their implications for human exposure

Aquatic organisms in industrially polluted areas can accumulate large quantities of heavy metals. To assess the resulting health risks, 11 trace elements in 184 aquatic products representing 14 species of fish, crustaceans, and bivalves collected from Shenzhen, China were determined. Aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), antimony (Sb), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The pollution levels of each product and the human health risk resulting from their consumption were then assessed. The concentrations of As in 57 % of samples and Cd in 11 % of samples exceeded the upper limits stipulated by the Chinese National Food Safety Standards (GB 2762-2017), which was mainly due to high concentrations of trace elements in crustaceans and bivalves. The Nemerow integrated pollution index indicated that the aquatic products accumulated high levels of As and Cd. Health risk assessments using the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) suggested that As and Cd exposure due to consumption of aquatic products presents a potential health risk for residents of Shenzhen.

Concentration, distribution, and assessment of dissolved heavy metals in rivers of Lake Chaohu Basin, China

This study aimed at establishing the spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of dissolved metals, and assessing the water quality and potential human health risk, in rivers of Lake Chaohu Basin (LCB, China). Four seasonal samplings were conducted at 83 sites from April to December in 2018. The water quality was assessed using heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), while hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risks indicated potential human risk, according to 12 metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Ba, and Pb). Spatially, sites were effectively classified into Group I and II using cluster analysis. Generally, dissolved metals were low in rivers of LCB at whole basin scale. Total metals concentrations, as well as HEI and HI, were significantly higher in Group II compared with Group I. The mean total concentration was 496.38 μg L^-1, with the highest mean of Zn (233.39 μg L^-1), followed by Ba (170.66 μg L^-1). The pollution status was generally classified as "slightly affected" by HEI, with a mean of 1.51. According to HI, there were 6.02% and 10.84% of all the 83 sites (main in Nanfei River) with greater chances of harmful health risks for adults and children, respectively. Furthermore, a high risk was observed of Cr, As, and Ni, which was listed in the decreasing order. Although the dissolved metals were relatively low, the potential risk for human health still existed in rivers of LCB, which the local manager should pay more attention to in future.

Comparison of characteristics, water quality and health risk assessment of trace elements in surface water and groundwater in China

Water quality is closely associated with human health and socio-economic sustainable development. With the increasingly intensive anthropogenic activities, pollutants especially trace elements, enter water aquatic system and cause harm to humans. This study conducted the first systematic comparison on the pollution status of surface water and groundwater in China. Water quality and health risk assessment of 12 trace elements were evaluated according to the water quality index (WQI), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risk (CR). The results showed that the average values of trace elements in the majority of surface water were higher than those in groundwater. The WQI values demonstrated that 86.02% of surface water and 83.11% of groundwater were suitable for drinking water. Arsenic served as the predominant pollutant and contributed significantly to cause the non‑carcinogenic risk on human health in both surface water and groundwater, children were more vulnerable to the adverse effects than adults. In surface water, the priority non-carcinogenic risk sites were mainly distributed in Anning River, Taizi River, Middle reaches of Huai River and Jilin section of Songhua River. For groundwater, the high-risk sites were located in Huhhot Basin, Kuitun, Jianghan Plain, Datong Basin and Yucheng County. Arsenic posed potential carcinogenic risk to local resident in some water sites, and it presented higher in groundwater than surface water. More concerns should be paid on Songhua, Yangtze and Huai River Basins, in addition, Pearl, Southeast Coastal, Southwest and Northwest River Basins still need attention. The future work should be carried out more extensive range of the water sites and long-term monitoring in China. In particular, more attention should be dedicated to assess high As water bodies.

Spatial Variation and Source of Dissolved Heavy Metals in the Lancangjiang River, Southwest China

Dissolved heavy metals are not only the essential micronutrients, but also the toxic elements for human bodies. To investigate the heavy metal sources and assess the water quality of the Lancangjiang River, dissolved Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Pb were detected in this study. The results show that dissolved Ni and Mo, Cr and Pb, and Cu and Zn were similarly distributed within the drainage basin. The correlation analysis exhibited that dissolved Ni and Mo had correlation with water parameter, and dissolved Cu was weakly correlated with Ni, indicating that they might be affected by natural processes. The principal component analysis explained 68.342% of the total variance for three principal components, of which dissolved Ni, Mo, and Cu were controlled by natural inputs; dissolved Cu and Cr were affected by anthropogenic activities; and dissolved Zn was influenced by agricultural activities in the downstream. The water quality showed that the water in upstream was worse than in midstream and downstream, and the whole drainage basin had water of excellent quality. Water within the drainage basin poses no risks to human bodies via daily diets and dermal routes. Dissolved Zn, Cu, and Mo occupied the major proportion of heavy metals transporting into the Mekong River. The agricultural inputs of dissolved Zn might pose potential risks to the Mekong River.

Spatial and Temporal Variation of Dissolved Heavy Metals in the Mun River, Northeast Thailand

River water samples between August 2017 (wet season) and March 2018 (dry season) from the Mun River Basin in northeast Thailand were collected and their dissolved heavy metals concentrations (Al, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Ba) were measured. Compared with international drinking water guidelines, Mn was the dominant pollutant in the dry season. The correlation analysis (CA) suggested that similar sources were shown in each element pair of Al-Fe, Mn-Zn, and Fe-Ba in both seasons. The principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that the dominant source of dissolved heavy metals was sedimentary inputs or colloid destabilization in the wet season, while anthropogenic inputs were the main sources in the dry season, such as agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, and domestic discharge. On the basis of water quality index (WQI), water at most sites in the wet and dry seasons can be categorized as excellent water, except for a few sites with substandard values. The river water posed no significant health risks according to the health risk assessment, but Mn, Fe, and Ba needed to be paid more attention due to the relatively high values. Al, Fe, and Ba were the main dissolved heavy metals flowing into the Mekong River, and Cu contributed to the background value in the Mekong river.

Distribution, Sources, and Water Quality Assessment of Dissolved Heavy Metals in the Jiulongjiang River Water, Southeast China

In this study, the concentration of eight dissolved heavy metals (Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Mo, Sb, and Ba) in 42 water samples from the Jiulongjiang River, southeast China, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Multivariate statistical methods, including correlation analysis (CA) and factor and principal component analysis (FA/PCA), were analyzed to identify the sources of the elements. Water quality index (WQI) and health risk assessment, including hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI), were used to evaluate water quality and the impacts on human health. Our results were compared with the drinking water guidelines reported by China, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), revealing that Ti, Mn, and Sb were not within approved limits at some sites and might be the main pollutants in the drainage basin. Based on the spatial distributions, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Mo showed good similarity, indicating that they might come from similar sources along the river. The CA results also showed that Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Mo had a high correlation coefficient. The FA/PCA results identified three principal components (PC) that accounted for 79.46% of the total variance. PC 1 suggested that a mixed lithogenic and urban land source contributed to Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Mo; PC 2 showed that Cr, Ni, and Mo were influenced by the discharge of industrial effluents; Sb had a strong loading on PC 3, which was controlled by mining activities. The results of the WQI indicated that the water in the Jiulongjiang River was basically categorized as excellent water, but the water quality levels in site W5 and N4 were poorer due to urban land use. Hazard quotient and HI values showed that Sb was a potential threat to human health, indicating that preventive actions should be considered in regard to mining activities in the upper reaches of Beixi stream.
