Advancements in bilge wastewater treatment: A review for current and future trends

Bilge wastewater (BW) from ships poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems due to its recalcitrant nature. BW is mainly composed of organic hydrocarbons and oils together with surfactants, heavy metals, and other organic compounds but oil is the sole compound regulated by international law with a discharge limit of 15 mg/L. Therefore, BW treatment is a crucial aspect of marine pollution control and environmental protection. In this sense, BW must be treated on board or shipped to treatment plants on land. While conventional methods like gravity separation and adsorption have been used to treat BW, their inability to effectively treat complex mixtures has encouraged researchers to investigate advanced alternatives. Thus, new, cost-efficient, and sustainable technologies to treat BW are required such as those based on biological approaches. Moreover, integrating bio-based methods with existing technologies can provide comprehensive and eco-friendly treatment solutions. This review compiles various documents published regarding the treatment of BW, pointing out the necessity of developing new cost-efficient and environmentally friendly approaches to treat it. To the best knowledge of the authors this is the first comprehensive review on this very latest topic. Therefore, this review will be a significant contribution to the literature in terms of conservation of the environment, reduction in water pollution, and protection of the marine ecosystems.

Assessment of heavy metals contamination of sediments and surface waters of Bitter lake, Suez Canal, Egypt: Ecological risks and human health

The concentrations of heavy metals in the surface waters and sediments of Bitter Lake were investigated to assess the level, distribution, and source of pollution and the associated ecological and human health risks. The ecological indices of the lake water indicate low contamination degrees by heavy metals. A dermal exposure-based health risk evaluation revealed no carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic impact on human health. The contamination factor (CF) for Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, Fe, and Zn (CF < 1) indicate low contamination levels, while Cd reaches very high contamination in most sediment sites (CF ranges from 6.2 to 72.4). Furthermore, the potential ecological risk factor (Erⁱ) and modified hazard quotient (mHQ) indicate low ecological risk for all metals except Cd, revealing high to very high-level ecological risk in most sites (Erⁱ ranges from 185 to 2173 and mHQ from 1.8 to 6.3). This emphasizes the urgency of prompt actions to improve the environment in Bitter Lake.

Oily bilge water treatment using indigenous soil bacteria: Implications for recycling the treated sludge in vegetable farming

Hydrocarbon contamination from motorized vessels operating on seas threaten marine ecosystems and need to treated efficiently. A bilge wastewater treatment using indigenous bacteria isolated from oil contaminated soil was studied. Five bacterial isolates (Acinetobacter baumanni, Klebsiella aerogenes, Pseudomonas fluorescence, Bacillus subtilis and Brevibacterium linens) were isolated from port soil and used in the bilge water treatment. Their crude oil degradation abilities were first confirmed experimentally. The single species and the consortia of each two species were compared in an experiment where the conditions were first optimized. The optimized conditions were 40 °C, carbon source glucose, nitrogen source ammonium chloride, pH 8, and salinity 25%. Each of the species and each combination was able to degrade oil. K. aerogenes and P. fluorescence were the most efficient in reducing the crude oil concentration. The crude oil concentration was reduced from 290 mg/L to 23 mg/L and 21 mg/L, respectively. The respective values for the loss in turbidity were from 320 NTU to 29 mg/L and 27 NTU and for BOD loss from 210 mg/L to 18 mg/L and 16 mg/L. Mn was reduced from 25.4 mg/L to 1.2 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, Cu from 26.8 mg/L to 2.9 mg/L and 2.4 mg/L, and Pb from 29.8 mg/L to 1.5 mg/L and 1.8 mg/L. The consortium of K. aerogenes and P. fluorescence in the bilge wastewater treatment reduced the crude oil concentration to 11 mg/L. After the treatment, the water was removed and the sludge was composted with palm molasses and cow dung. After 60 days of composting and inoculation with different bacterial consortia, the final product was used as a seedbed for vegetables. The compost with the consortium K. aerogenes and P. fluorescence promoted vegetable plant growth most and could be used in farming.

Wettability Studies of Capillary PTFE Membranes Applied for Membrane Distillation

In the present study, the membrane distillation (MD) process was studied with the use of commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) capillary membranes. For this purpose, both solutions with NaCl concentrations up to 300 g/L and brines contaminated with oil (70-120 mg/L) were used as feeds. The membrane's wetting resistance was tested by conducting long-term experiments for over 3500 h. Using detailed studies, it has been shown that increasing the salt concentration from 35 to 300 g/L resulted in a 50% reduction in the permeate flux. Nevertheless, the membranes retained 100% of the salt rejection after 2000 h of the module's operation. Moreover, it has been found that performing the MD process with brines contaminated with oil (120 mg/L) led to the wetting of some membranes pores, which it turn resulted in an increase in the distillate's conductivity to 450 µS/cm after 700 h running the process. The mechanism of pore wetting by oil droplets adsorbed on the membrane's surface was presented. Finally, the proposed method of membrane cleaning with the use of a solvent allowed restoring the initial MD module's performance. Consequently, both the permeate flux and distillate conductivity were stable during the MD of the feed containing 35 g/L of NaCl over the next 280 h.

Biodegradation and optimization of bilge water in a sequencing batch reactor using response surface methodology

Bilge water is a significant source of pollution in the marine environment and has captured widespread international attention. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) combined with strain S2 identified as Bacillus licheniformis was employed to assess the biodegradation of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from bilge water. The influencing variables such as temperature, pH level and inoculum concentration on the performance SBR system were optimized by utilizing response surface methodology (RSM). The experimental results showed that the maximum COD removal of 77.81% was reached at the optimal SBR operation conditions of temperature 35.44 °C pH 8.13, and inoculum concentration 31.47 mL. In the practical application of SBR, it was found that the decrease in hydraulic retention time (HRT) was accompanied by a decrease in COD degradation rate. The biodegradation kinetics of COD in bilge water were well fitted with the first-order equation with a higher R² value of 0.98106. In conclusion, COD in bilge water can be efficiently biodegraded by SBR under the optimization of RSM.

Metal and PAH loads from ships and boats, relative other sources, in the Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is a sensitive environment that is affected by chemical pollution derived from multiple natural and anthropogenic sources. The overall aim of this study was to estimate the load of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from shipping and leisure boating, relative other sources, to the Baltic Sea and to identify possible measures that could lead to major reductions in the loads of hazardous substances from maritime shipping and leisure boating. The use of copper-based antifouling paints, and operation of scrubbers in open loop mode, were the two most dominant identified sources of hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea. Open loop scrubbers accounted for 8.5 % of the total input of anthracene to the sea. More than a third of the total load of copper can be reduced if copper-free antifouling paints or other biocide-free antifouling strategies are used on ships and leisure boats.

Modelling spatial dispersion of contaminants from shipping lanes in the Baltic Sea

Major sources of pollution from shipping to marine environments are antifouling paint residues and discharges of bilge, black, grey and ballast water and scrubber discharge water. The dispersion of copper, zinc, naphthalene, pyrene, and dibromochloromethane have been studied using the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model, the General Estuarine Transport Model, and the Eulerian tracer transport model in the Baltic Sea in 2012. Annual loads of the contaminants ranged from 10^-2 tons for pyrene to 100 s of tons for copper. The dispersion of the contaminants is determined by the surface kinetic energy and vertical stratification at the location of the discharge. The elevated concentration of the contaminants at the surface persists for about two-days and the contaminants are dispersed over the spatial scale of 10-60 km. The Danish Sounds, the southwestern Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland are under the heaviest pressure of shipborne contaminants in the Baltic Sea.

Determining the bilge water waste risk and management in the Gulf of Antalya by the Monte Carlo method

Bilge water waste poses an environmental risk for humans and marine creatures by causing cancer and developmental disorders due to the toxic substances. This study aims to create a calculation method to calculate the amount of bilge that a ship can produce. The number of ships and the amount of bilge water that they have given the port waste reception facilities in the past years were collected to prevent marine pollution caused by ships in the Gulf of Antalya. The amount of possible future bilge water discharge in the gulf was estimated by using the collected data by linear regression method. The risk distribution of the amount of bilge water that a ship can produce was determined with the data obtained by the Monte Carlo method for the first time in this study. As a result, although the number of ships in the gulf will decrease in number, it is predicted that the amount of bilge water discharge and the needs of a waste receptions facility will increase in the coming years. It is found that the amount of bilge water that a ship can generate will vary in 0.78-3.16 m³, and this data can apply to every ship type. Since the calculation method used in this study can be used for each region with all ship types in calculating the amount of bilge waste a ship can produce, it ensures that the inspections made are more effective. Thus, the management of wastes originating from ships can be effectively and adequately implemented by those who carry out wastes, and marine pollution from ships can be prevented.Implications: Bilge water waste poses an environmental risk for humans and marine creatures by causing cancer and developmental disorders due to the toxic substances. So, It's crucial to manage bilge water waste properly. This study creates a calculation method to calculate the bilge water waste that a ship can produce for applying bilge water waste management. When the studies on the amount of bilge water being discharged into the sea, it is seen that the amount of bilge water that a ship can generate is identified for ships with certain characteristics. However, since the amount of bilge a ship can produce depends on many factors such as engine power, cruise time, and ship's age, these data are insufficient and not usable because it is difficult to predict the type and number of ships in the coming years. This calculation model is simulated most realistically with the calculation to make with the linear regression and Monte Carlo method used for the first time in this study.

Resistance of Polypropylene Membrane to Oil Fouling during Membrane Distillation

The influence of oil emulsion presence in the water on the course of water desalination by membrane distillation was studied. The feed water was contaminated by oil collected from the bilge water. The impact of feed composition on the wetting resistance of hydrophobic polypropylene membranes was evaluated during long-term studies. Two types of the capillary membranes fabricated by thermally induced phase separation method were tested. It has been found that these membranes were non-wetted during the separation of NaCl solutions over a period of 500 h of modules exploitation. The addition of oil (5-100 mg/L) to the feed caused a progressive decline of the permeate flux up to 30%; however, the applied hydrophobic membranes retained their non-wettability for the consecutive 2400 h of the process operation. It was indicated that several compounds containing the carbonyl group were formed on the membranes surface during the process. These hydrophilic compounds facilitated the water adsorption on the surface of polypropylene which restricted the oil deposition on the membranes used.

Potential Efficient Separation of Oil from Bilgewater and Kitchen Wastewater by Fractional Freezing Process

Oily wastewater discharge to water bodies can have many negative consequences, especially on the marine ecological environment. Although there are numerous techniques for treating oily wastewater, this paper aims to introduce and evaluate the potential of the fractional freezing (FF) process as a new oil–water separation technique to overcome the several weaknesses found in the conventional oil–water separation methods. FF separates two liquid compounds based on their freezing point difference. In this study, two oily wastewater samples were used: oily bilgewater and oily kitchen wastewater. The effects of coolant temperature, freezing time, and stirring rate on the FF process efficiency were studied, and the significance of the data was supported by statistical analysis. The results show that a low coolant temperature is essential for allowing crystal nucleation formation and inducing crystal growth for an efficient separation process. However, the higher crystal growth rate that occurs at an even lower temperature might entrap the impurities inside the growing crystal. Consequently, continuing the crystallization for a longer time may yield a less efficient separation process. Furthermore, a too high stirring rate will rupture the solid formation, hence reducing the process efficiency. The final values of oil/grease and free fatty acids (FFA) obtained after the FF process of both samples were found to comply with the standard permitted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (PORAM). Moreover, the p-values obtained for both of the above-mentioned samples were below 0.05 for all experiments. It can be concluded that this method has the potential to separate oil from the oily bilgewater and kitchen wastewater.

Wastewater Management: Bibliometric Analysis of Scientific Literature

Two of the greatest challenges that threaten sustainable development are the water supply crisis together with the control of water resources pollution. The United Nations recognises that the right to safe drinking water and sanitation is an essential right, and states are called upon to intensify their efforts to provide the entire population with affordable access to safe drinking water. However, due to population growth and climate change, water resources are under great pressure, producing millions of cubic metres of wastewater. Due to the near impossibility of increasing water supply in a natural way, the importance of wastewater management as a method has grown in recent years, which, although it is not to increase the amount of this resource, but to facilitate its successive use before its final return to the sea. The objective of this article is to carry out a bibliometric analysis regarding the production and impact of the scientific research related to wastewater management indexed in the WoS and Scopus databases. The purpose is to know key aspects such as the progression of production over the years, maturity in research, coverage of the subject, identifying the most discussed topics and therefore identifying the gaps, the most relevant authors and the core of journals through which knowledge in this area is disseminated, as well as its impact through the analysis of citations. This analysis can help future researchers in this field by providing an overview of the current literature that helps them identify new research approaches to position their own work and identify the most relevant authors in this field. Likewise, a comparison is made on coverage and overlap between the two main international databases WoS and Scopus. From the analysis of the 211 articles selected through an advanced search by terms with a time limit set in 2018, it is concluded that we are facing a very incipient field of knowledge that has aroused great interest since 2010, with about half of the articles published in the period 2012–2018. Although WoS and Scopus differ in general terms in scope and coverage policies, both systems are complementary and not exclusive. In the specific area of wastewater management, Scopus is the base that provides the best coverage taking into account the number of articles published and the number of citations received.

Paradigm shifts and current challenges in wastewater management

Wastewater is a significant environmental and public health concern which management is a constant challenge since antiquity. Wastewater research has increased exponentially over the last decades. This paper provides a global overview of the exponentially increasing wastewater research in order to identify current challenges and paradigm shifts. Besides households, hospitals and typical industries, other sources of wastewater appear due to emerging activities like hydraulic fracturing. While the composition of wastewater needs constant reassessment to identify contaminants of interest, the comprehensive chemical and toxicological analysis remains one of the main challenges in wastewater research. Moreover, recent changes in the public perception of wastewater has led to several paradigm shifts: i) water reuse considering wastewater as a water resource rather than a hazardous waste, ii) wastewater-based epidemiology considering wastewater as a source of information regarding the overall health of a population through the analysis of specific biomarkers, iii) circular economy through the implementation of treatment processes aiming at harvesting valuable components such as precious metals or producing valuable goods such as biofuel. However, wastewater research should also address social challenges such as the public acceptance of water reuse or the access to basic sanitation that is not available for nearly a third of the world population.

A review on the environmental impacts of shipping on aquatic and nearshore ecosystems

There are several environmental and ecological effects of shipping. However, these are rarely assessed in total in the scientific literature. Thus, the aim of this study was to summarize the different impacts of water-based transport on aquatic and nearshore ecosystems and to identify knowledge gaps and areas for future research. The review identified several environmental and ecological consequences within the main impact categories of water discharges, physical impacts, and air emissions. However, although quantitative data on these consequences are generally scarce the shipping contribution to acidification by SO_x- and NO_x-emissions has been quantified to some extent. There are several knowledge gaps regarding the ecological consequences of, for example, the increasing amount of chemicals transported on water, the spread of non-indigenous species coupled with climate change, and physical impacts such as shipping noise and artificial light. The whole plethora of environmental consequences, as well as potential synergistic effects, should be seriously considered in transport planning.

Legacy and emerging pollutants in the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea) - loads and distribution revisited

Coastal marine areas of densely populated countries are exposed to a wide array of human activities having an impact on their ecological status. The Baltic Sea is particularly susceptible to pollution by hazardous substances (limited water exchange, shallowness, and large catchment area). Polish media regularly reports ecological catastrophes in the Gulf of Gdańsk area caused by eg. shipwrecks leaking. Thus, there is a need of a broad scientific based report on recent contaminant loads and distribution. In this review paper, we report loads of contaminants from different obvious and non-obvious sources. We also gather data on legacy and new emerging contaminant concentrations measured in the Gulf of Gdańsk within the last decade (2008-2018). The paper also includes available biological effect measurements performed recently as well as a summary of needs and gaps to be filled for the development of reliable risk assessment.
