Presence of plastic debris and retained fishing hooks in oceanic sharks

A review of elasmobranch catch-and-release science: synthesis of current knowledge, implications for best practice and future research directions

Until relatively recently commercial fisheries have been considered the main driving factor for elasmobranch population declines. However, this belief has begun to shift with the realization that recreational elasmobranch catches may equal or exceed commercial catches in some regions. Many recreational angling fisheries for elasmobranchs involve high participation in catch-and-release angling practices. However, high release rates may not necessarily equate to high survival rates. Therefore, to assist accurate assessment of the potential impact of recreational angling on elasmobranchs, we attempted to summarize and integrate currently available information on specific risk factors associated with recreational angling, alongside associated mortality rates, as well as information on angler behaviour as it relates to identified risk factors. We categorized the major angling-related effects into two groups: injury-induced effects; and biochemical disruption-induced effects; providing a summary of each group and outlining the main lethal and sub-lethal outcomes stemming from these. These outcomes include immediate and delayed post-release mortality, behavioural recovery periods (which may in-turn confer increased predation risks), chronic health impacts and capture-induced parturition and abortion. Additionally, we detailed a range of angling practices and equipment, including hook-type, hook removal and emersion (i.e. air exposure), as well as inter- and intra-specific factors, including aerobic scope, respiratory mode, body size and species-specific behaviours, which are likely to influence injury and/or mortality rates and should therefore be considered when assessing angling-related impacts. We then utilized these data to provide a range of actionable recommendations for both anglers and policymakers which would serve to reduce the population-level impact of recreational angling on these enigmatic animals.

Development and Characterization of Films for Food Application Incorporating Porphyran Extracted from Porphyra dioica

Non-biodegradable plastic is one of the biggest environmental problems of our lifetime and, considering the present societal needs, it will get worse. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop sustainable and renewable alternatives to plastic, such as plastic-like materials obtained from biodegradable polymers, namely sulfated polysaccharides, considered one of the most viable alternatives. There is also a need to obtain these materials in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. The hereby developed process of obtaining film-forming solutions from semi-refined porphyran (PorphSR) uses a green solvent (hot water) with a high extraction yield of semi-refined porphyran (26.66 ± 0.27%) in a reproducible way and with low levels of contaminants. The obtained semi-refined porphyran showed good antioxidant potential in all tests performed: HPSA (Δ0.066 ± 0.002), DPPH (2.23 ± 0.78%), FRAP (0.420 ± 0.014 eq. ascorbic acid µg mg−1 of extract) and ABTS (20.46 ± 0.90%). After being cast into films, the most notable antioxidant properties were those of the semi-refined porphyran in the DPPH, FRAP and ABTS assays and of the pectin, (PorphSR_PcT and PorphSR_PcT_Gly) in the HPSA assay. Morphologically, the films showed relatively homogeneous and low roughness surfaces. It is concluded that the described method to obtain semi-refined porphyran is feasible and reproducible, and that the developed films, mainly PorfP2_PcT_Gly, proved to be a potential candidate for non-biodegradable plastic substitutes.

Incidence of plastic ingestion by the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, off the northeast coast of Taiwan

This present study documents the incidence of plastic digestion by shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), caught by the Taiwanese small-scale tuna longline fishery in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (between the northeast coast of Taiwan and Japan). In 20 stomachs of shortfin mako, nearly 10% of samples contained at least one piece of plastic debris. The ingested plastic debris was found in the forms of films (5.0 cm) and fragments (3.0 mm) and was identified as polypropylene (PP) based on its polymer characteristics. The results from the analysis provide evidence for the anthropogenic origin and potential intake pathway of direct engulfment of ingested plastics. Our results also confirmed the low incidence of plastic ingestion in shortfin mako, suggesting that pelagic marine species may be relatively less affected by plastic pollution. Future research efforts are thus needed to assess the long-term impact of plastic pollution on marine species.

Investigation of microplastics in edible wild mussels from İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea, Western Turkey): A risk assessment for the consumers

The presence of microplastics (MPs) was determined in Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819) and grooved carpet shell (Ruditapes decussatus Linnaeus, 1758) together with water samples from in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea, Western Turkey). A total of 895 MPs from Karşıyaka (Station 1), and 787 MPs from Gülbahçe (Station 2) were detected in 60 mussel samples, giving a total content of 1682 MPs. In water samples, a total of 545 MPs were detected in samples from Station 1 and 1287 MPs in samples from Station 2 (1832 MPs total). The amount of MPs in water samples was less in Station 1 than in Station 2. This difference is probably caused by Çiğli Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located near Station 1. Public health risk assessment on the consumption of the species M. galloprovincialis revealed that 70.82 items person^-1 year^-1 MPs through this species could enter consumers' digestive systems.

Escaped bait: Bull shark Carcharhinus leucas with an intentionally attached harness rig

A 193 cm total length female bull shark Carcharhinus leucas was captured in Florida bearing intentionally attached materials which resembled a harness. Harness-type live bait rigs are commonly used for small baitfish; some anglers use such devices with small sharks when targeting large sharks and bony fish. Biofouling on the apparatus and the extent of the injuries indicated the material had likely been on the shark for several years. This case highlights the dangers of using these types of devices on juveniles of long-lived species that attain a large body size.

Plastic ingestion lead to reduced body condition and modified diet patterns in the rocky shore crab Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) (Brachyura: Grapsidae)

In this study, we aimed to identify impacts of plastic ingestion by the ecologically important rocky shore crab Pachygrapsus transversus. We sampled individuals from August 2019 to January 2020 in a reef environment and determined their body condition and diet diversity. In order to test our hypothesis that plastic retention in the foregut is able to decrease the condition factor, we compared it between contaminated and non-contaminated individuals. A correlation test of number of ingested plastic fibres against trophic diversity was made to corroborate the hypothesis that plastic ingestion modifies the feeding patterns. Our results demonstrated that contaminated individuals had lower body condition. Also, we confirmed that debris ingestion can influence feeding patterns. These outcomes were probably linked to starvation and nutrient loss effects. We discussed that this crab is a potential sentinel specie for addressing impacts of solid pollution and a candidate for monitoring plastic contamination in reef environments.

Proposal of Package-to-Product Indicator for Carbon Footprint Assessment with Focus on the Czech Republic

Today, packaging is an integral part of most foods and beverages. However, excessive and just one-time applications of packaging can bring about indisputable environmental impacts in the form of large amounts of waste generated. If we want to monitor the environmental impacts of packaging materials, it is advisable to assess them in a complex way including not only the specific packaging but also specific products. No universal methodology currently exists that would enable this type of complex assessment regarding the environmental impacts of packaging in relation to particular products. Therefore, the aim of our study was to develop and test a Package-to-Product (PtP) indicator. For this purpose, the life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to analyse four selected products considering different life cycle stages of packaging and their impacts on the climate change category. The results of the study confirm that the values of the PtP indicator significantly differ for various products, thus emphasising the need to establish a uniform methodology for individual product groups, such as meat, dairy and vegetable products or beverages. The application of this indicator, however, enables a clear impact assessment of different packaging materials and allows the packaging manufacturers to reduce their overall environmental impacts.
