The effect of bioturbation by polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis on release and distribution of buried hydrocarbon pollutants in coastal muddy sediment

Mechanisms of intestinal injury in polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis caused by low-concentration fluorene pollution: Microbiome and metabonomic analyses

The polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis is used for bioremediation; however, its ability to remove fluorene, a common environmental pollutant, from sediments remains unclear, especially at low concentrations of fluorene (10 mg/kg). In this study, we explored the mechanism of intestinal injury induced by low concentrations of fluorene and the reason intestinal injury is alleviated in high fluorene concentration groups (100 and 1000 mg/kg) using histology, ecological biomarkers, gut microbiome, and metabolic response analyses. The results show that P. aibuhitensis showed high tolerance to fluorene in sediments, with clearance rates ranging 25-50 %. However, the remediation effect at low fluorene concentrations (10 mg/kg) was poor. This is attributed to promoting the growth of harmful microorganisms such as Microvirga, which can cause metabolic disorders, intestinal flora imbalances, and the generation of harmful substances such as 2-hydroxyfluorene. These can result in severe intestinal injury in P. aibuhitensis, reducing its fluorene clearance rate. However, high fluorene concentrations (100 and 1000 mg/kg) may promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms such as Faecalibacterium, which can replace the dominant harmful microorganisms and improve metabolism to reverse the intestinal injury caused by low fluorene concentrations, ultimately restoring the fluorene-removal ability of P. aibuhitensis. This study demonstrates an effective method for evaluating the potential ecological risks of fluorene pollution in marine sediments and provides guidance for using P. aibuhitensis for remediation.

Dilute concentrations of maritime fuel can modify sediment reworking activity of high-latitude marine invertebrates

Multiple expressions of climate change, in particular warming-induced reductions in the type, extent and thickness of sea ice, are opening access and providing new viable development opportunities in high-latitude regions. Coastal margins are facing these challenges, but the vulnerability of species and ecosystems to the effects of fuel contamination associated with increased maritime traffic is largely unknown. Here, we show that low concentrations of the water-accommodated fraction of marine fuel oil, representative of a dilute fuel oil spill, can alter functionally important aspects of the behaviour of sediment-dwelling invertebrates. We find that the response to contamination is species specific, but that the range in response among individuals is modified by increasing fuel concentrations. Our study provides evidence that species responses to novel and/or unprecedented levels of anthropogenic activity associated with the opening up of high-latitude regions can have substantive ecological effects, even when human impacts are at, or below, commonly accepted safe thresholds. These secondary responses are often overlooked in broad-scale environmental assessments and marine planning yet, critically, they may act as an early warning signal for impending and more pronounced ecological transitions.

Inhibiting release of phenanthrene from rice-crab coculture sediments to overlying water with rice stalk biochar: Performance and mechanisms

Rice crab coculture is a new ecological agriculture model combining rice cultivation and crab farming. Current research related to rice crab coculture only focuses on production theory and technical system establishment, while ignoring the potential ecological risk of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAHs) in rice crab coculture sediment. In this study, rice straw was used to make rice straw biochar to explore the performance and mechanism of inhibiting release of phenanthrene(PHE) from rice-crab coculture sediments to overlying water with rice stalk biochar. The kinetic and isotherm adsorption data were best represented by the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.35 mg/g at 12 h contact time. The results showed that PHE was released from the rice-crab substrate to the overlying water in dissolved and particle forms as a result of bioturbation, and the PHE concentrations in dissolved and particle forms were 20.9 μg/L and 14.22 μg/L, respectively. This leads to secondary ecological risks in rice-crab co-culture systems. This is related to dissolved organic carbon(DOC) carrying the dissolved PHE and total suspended solids(TSS) carrying the particle PHE in the overlying water. Due to its large specific surface area, rice straw biochar is rich in functional groups, providing multiple hydrophobic adsorption sites. After adding rice straw biochar at 0.5 % w/w (dry weight) dose, the removal efficiency of dissolved and particulate PHE in the overlying water were 78.99 % and 42.11 %, respectively. Rice straw biochar is more competitively adsorbed PHE in the overlying water than TSS and DOC. The removal efficiency of PHE from the sediment was 52.75 %. This study confirmed that rice stalk biochar could effectively inhibit PHE migration and release in paddy sediment. It provides an environment- friendly in situ remediation method for the management of PAHs pollution from crab crops in rice fields.

Changes in carbon metabolism and dissolved organic carbon fluxes on seagrass patches (Halodule wrightii) with different ages in Southern Gulf of California

Seagrass meadows are highly dynamic, particularly in sites where extreme climatological events may produce a mosaic of patches with different ages. This study evaluates the community carbon metabolism, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes and associated fauna in patches of Halodule wrightii with different ages since establishment. Net community production declined as patch age increased, probably due to the increase in non-photosynthetic tissues, higher respiration rates of the community assemblage and a likely increase in self-shading of the canopy. The export of DOC was significantly higher in the youngest patches, mainly as a consequence of the lower seagrass net production recorded in older meadows. We concluded that 'colonizers' seagrass species may show higher production rates and DOC release during the first stages of colonization, which suggest that, the production, organic carbon exportation and their role as relevant blue carbon communities may be higher than expected.

Effect of humic acid-modified attapulgite on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon adsorption and release from paddy soil into the overlying water in a rice-crab coculture paddy ecosystem and the underlying process

Phenanthrene (Phe), a typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutant, poses an enormous safety risk to rice-crab coculture (RC) paddy ecosystems. In this study, humic acid-modified purified attapulgite (HA-ATP) with a composite structure was successfully fabricated to adsorb PAHs released from paddy soil to overlying water in RC paddy ecosystems in Northeast China. The maximum crab bioturbation intensities for dissolved Phe and particulate Phe were 64.83nullng/L·(cm²·d) and 214.29nullng/L·(cm²·d), respectively. The highest concentration of dissolved Phe released from paddy soil to overlying water due to crab bioturbation reached 80.89nullng/L, while the corresponding concentration of particulate Phe reached 267.36nullng/L. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations in overlying water increased correspondingly and were strongly correlated with dissolved Phe and particulate Phe concentrations, respectively (P < 0.05). When 6% HA-ATP was added to the surface layer of paddy soil, the efficiency of the adsorption of Phe release was 24.00%-36.38% for particulate Phe and 89.99%-91.91% for dissolved Phe. Because HA-ATP has a large adsorption pore size (11.33 nm) and surface area (82.41nullm²/g) as well as many HA functional groups, it provided multiple hydrophobic adsorption sites for dissolved Phe, which was conducive to competitive adsorption with DOC in the overlying water. In contrast to that adsorbed by DOC, the average proportion of dissolved Phe adsorbed by HA-ATP reached 90.55%, which reduced the dissolved Phe concentration in the overlying water. Furthermore, even though the particulate Phe was resuspended by crab bioturbation, HA-ATP immobilized particulate Phe due to its capacity to inhibit desorption, which achieved the goal of reducing the Phe concentration in the overlying water. This result was confirmed by research on the adsorption-desorption characteristics of HA-ATP. This research provides an environmentally friendly in situ remediation method for reducing agricultural environmental risks and improving rice crop quality.

Impact of heavy metals (cadmium and copper) stress on the bioturbation potential of polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis (family Nereididae)

The change of macrofaunal bioturbation potential (BP) under environmental stress has application value in ecological restoration and ecological models. Single and combined toxic effects of metals cadmium and copper on the BP of polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis were studied. The distribution of tracer sand showed a negative correlation between the transportation capacity of P. aibuhitensis and the Cd concentration; Cu stress indicated a stronger ability of promoting downward transportation, and the linear relationship with concentration was not so obvious as Cd. The toxicity stress of Cd and Cu also showed a significant effect on the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment matrix. There was a certain synergistic effect between cadmium and copper, and toxicity effects were associated with metal concentration and stress duration. In the later stage of the combined experiment, P. aibuhitensis avoided living in depth near the bottom, especially when the concentrations of Cd and Cu were high. For the bioturbation model, it was suggested that the two parameters of mobility and reworking would be reduced by half or one category scale depending on the cadmium and copper concentration and stress duration. The results can be used for ecological restoration prediction and ecological risk assessment; it is necessary to carry out more studies with a variety of environmental factors and indicators, since a variety of coexisted pollutants would show complex influence on the BP of macrobenthos.

Insights into the impacts of bioturbation by multiple benthic organisms on the bioavailability and toxic effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate in sediment

Sediment is an important reservoir for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the environment, which likely poses adverse effects to benthos. In this study, the impacts of bioturbation of three benthic organisms, i.e. Chironomus kiiensis, Hyalella azteca and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, on the release of PFOS from sediment were investigated, and the toxic effects of PFOS to C. kiiensis were explored in the presence of one or two of the other benthic organisms. Among the three organisms, C. kiiensis displayed the weakest effect on the distribution of PFOS between sediment and water (P＞0.05). The bioturbation of H. azteca and L. hoffmeisteri distinctly facilitated the suspension of sediment, leading to the enhanced amount of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and the flux of PFOS from sediment to SPM. Consequently, the concentrations of PFOS in the overlying water and pore water decreased significantly. Moreover, both H. azteca and L. hoffmeisteri affected the survival of C. kiiensis, and its mortality increased from 2.8% to 100% and 41.7% respectively. This study provides insights into the influences of bioturbation on the bioavailability of PFOS in sediments, and is helpful for accurately assessing the transport, toxicity and potential risks of PFOS in sediments.

Differential effects of nutrient enrichment on carbon metabolism and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes in macrophytic benthic communities

Nutrient enrichment can alter negatively benthic communities and reduce their ecological services. This study explores in two contrasting seasons (winter and summer), the effects of in situ nutrient enrichment at the community level on carbon metabolism and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes in two benthic communities dominated by the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa and by the macroalga Caulerpa prolifera. Under nutrient enrichment, C. nodosa increased total community biomass and diversity in summer, while net community production shifted from net autotrophic to net heterotrophic in winter. In contrast, C. prolifera became heterotrophic in summer, while no significant effects were found in winter. Regarding DOC fluxes, nutrient enrichment shifted C. nodosa from net DOC consumer in winter to a strong net DOC producer in summer, while C. prolifera seemed unaffected. Therefore, nutrient enrichment can promote conditional effects (positive, negative or neutral) in coastal areas depending both on macrophyte assemblages and season.
