Correlation patterns between magnetic parameters and heavy metals of core sediments in the Yellow River Estuary and their environmental implications

The influences of Yellow River input and nutrient dynamics on colloidal Fe migration in the Bohai Sea, China

The coupling relationship between the <1 kDa, 1-3 kDa, 3-10 kDa, 10-100 kDa, and 100 kDa-0.45 μm Fe fractions and the environmental factors in the Bohai Sea (BS) was investigated. The 1-100 kDa Fe in the surface water exhibited a non-conservative phenomenon during the river-sea mixing process, which was related to the removal of colloidal Fe via flocculation during this process. For the bottom water, the ligands released by the sediments may form additions to the <100 kDa Fe. The COC and DOC were mainly closely related to the behavior of the Fe in the bottom water. The <1 and 3-10 kDa Fe was mainly significantly positively correlated with the DOC, while the <100 kDa-0.45 μm Fe was significantly negatively correlated with the DOC. <100 kDa LMW colloidal Fe exhibited more synergistic behavior with easily absorbed ammonium salts.

Exploring the primary magnetic parameters affecting chemical fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in lake sediment through an interpretable workflow

The magnetic properties of lake sediments account for close relationships with heavy metal(loid)s (HMs), but little is known about their relationships with chemical fractions (CFs) of HMs. Establishing an effective workflow to predict HMs risk among various machine learning (ML) methods in conjunction with magnetic measurement remains challenging. This study evaluated the simulation efficiency of nine ML methods in predicting the risk assessment code (RAC) and ratio of the secondary and primary phases (RSP) of HMs with magnetic parameters in sediment cores of a shallow lake. The sediment cores were collected and sliced, and the total amount and CFs of HMs, as well as magnetic parameters, were determined. Support vector machine (SVM) outperformed other models, as evidenced by coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.8. Interpretable machine learning (IML) methods were employed to identify key indicators of RAC and RSP among the magnetic parameters. Values of χARM, HIRM, χARM/χ, and χARM/SIRM of sediments ranging in 220-500 × 10-8 m3/kg, 30-40 × 10-5Am2/kg, 15-25, and 0.5-1, respectively, indicated the potential ecological risks of Cd, Hg, and Sb. This study offers new perspectives on the risk assessment of HMs in lake sediments by combining magnetic measurement with IML workflow.

Distribution, toxicity and bioaccumulation of trace metals in environmental matrices of an estuary in a protected area

Mangroves are productive ecosystems that are highly threatened by anthropogenic activities. We investigated the environmental quality of the Serinhaém river estuary located in a legally protected area. Through chemical analysis of sediments and tissues of Cardisoma guanhumi, in addition to bioassays with elutriate involving Nitokra sp. and Thalassiosira pseudonana, we determined the contamination status and risk factors related to trace metals in the estuary. For the sediment, the concentrations of Cr and Ni were above the limit established by CONAMA n° 454/2012 in the "City" site, and Cr above the TEL in all sampling sites. Ecotoxicological tests showed high toxicity in samples from "City" and "Tributary". The elements Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn were also higher in crabs from these sites. Cr levels exceeded the Brazilian limit for food consumption. The bioaccumulation factor was not significant. However, the overall analysis proved that this estuary is increasingly impacted by anthropogenic pressure.

Human-induced sediment degradation of Burullus lagoon, Nile Delta, Egypt: Heavy metals pollution status and potential ecological risk

Heavy metals contamination level and their ecological risk of the Burullus lagoon were estimated using four cores and twelve surficial sediment samples. The distributions maps of Fe, Mn, Zn, Hg, Cu, and Pb indicate an increase toward drains areas, whereas Cd rises toward the Boughaz El-Burullus. The geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and contamination factor (CF) for heavy metal displayed the following order: Cd > Zn > Fe > Cu > Pb > Mn > Hg. The degree of contamination (C_d) indicates a considerable degree of contamination for 81.25% of the studied stations, and the pollution load index (PLI) suggested deterioration in 100% of sediments. Regarding the potential ecological risk (RI), the metals were arranged as: Cd > Hg > Cu > Pb > Zn, with considerable risk at the eastern part. According to sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), Zn concentrations suggest frequently adverse impacts on biota while Cu and Cd indicating an occasional adverse impact. Periodic monitoring of heavy metals in aquatic organisms is recommended to assess their toxic risk.

The influence of the physicochemical properties of sediment on the content and ecotoxicity of trace elements in bottom sediments

The sorption mechanisms of the trace elements in bottom sediment are not fully understood. The study aim was to analyse the effect sorption capacity of bottom sediments on the content of trace elements and the bottom sediment ecotoxicity. The study found higher content of trace elements caused higher potential toxicity of bottom sediments. However, the PCA analysis indicated that ecotoxicity to Heterocypris incongruens was not related to the trace element content in the sediments. It was found that some of the physicochemical properties of bottom sediments determine the behavior of the test organism. The study revealed a strong relationships between the properties of bottom sediments and trace element sorption, which results from significant differences in the carbonate and organic matter contents. The obtained relationships showed a significant role in trace element sorption of negatively dissociating functional groups (carboxyl, phenolic, alcohol, and carbonyl groups) of Cha, Cfa, Cnh and DOC fraction and of clay minerals. Positive correlation between the metal content and the volume of ultramicropores, cryptopores and residual pores suggest that these pore groups contain reactive sites capable of effective element sorption. In contrast, larger pores turned out to be of marginal importance in trace elements sorption, probably participating only in their migration within the bottom sediment structure. An understanding of the above factors will provide comprehensive information on the fate of trace elements in aquatic systems.

Spatial and environmental characteristics of colloidal trace Cu in the surface water of the Yellow River Estuary, China

Dynamic variations in chemical composition and size distribution of dissolved copper (Cu) along the river-sea interface in the Yellow River Estuary (China) were investigated. On average, ~64% and ~8% of bulk dissolved Cu (<0.45 μm) were partitioned in the <1 kDa fraction and 1-100 kDa, respectively. The other 28% were in the 100 kDa-0.45 μm colloids, which indicates that this fraction may dominate the overall morphology of colloidal Cu. The <3 kDa Cu fraction was susceptible to environmental parameters and the >3 kDa fraction was related to the behavior of dissolved organic carbon. 1-100 kDa Cu migrated more violently than >100 kDa Cu and tended to be a stable polymer, with stability increasing towards the sea. The source of <1 kDa Cu was complex and may be supplemented by the decomposition of small molecular colloids and the addition of the sediments or particles ligands.

Magnetic properties of the surface sediments in the Yellow River Estuary and Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, China: Implications for monitoring heavy metals

The Yellow River Estuary (YRE) and adjacent Laizhou Bay (LB) encounter eco-environmental risks caused by heavy metals (HMs) pollution. Here magnetic measurements were performed on 239 surface sediment samples from the YRE and LB to establish a rapid and effective method for detecting HMs. Magnetite, maghemite, and hematite coexist in the sediments. The distributions of magnetic minerals are dominated by sediment sources (Yellow River in northern and western LB, and rivers in southern and eastern coastal LB), and the anticlockwise water current. Compared to the background values, Cd content is enriched for all samples, while Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb contents are lower for most samples. The low pollution load indexes (PLI) of HMs (< 1-1.56) indicate the unpolluted to moderately polluted status, while the muddy area is the most polluted. The principal component analysis indicates that Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn are mainly from natural weathering substances, while Cd and Pb are anthropogenic. Contents of fine-grained sediments and magnetic particles are positively correlated to Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and PLI. The high-risk Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn regions can be quickly delineated with the frequency-dependent susceptibility.
