Abstract
Mangroves form one of the most vital tropical ecosystems that support many species and surrounding communities. The Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) in the south of Mindanao Islands in the Philippines is home to a large number of mangrove species, which have not been fully explored. We updated the list of true mangrove species for SBPS from 10 to 24 by integrating the results of our survey and other past mangrove assessments. A practical spatial analysis approach was used to estimate the current mangrove forest extent of SBPS at 514 ha, as compared to 479 ha and 332 ha in 1998 and 2016, respectively, from other independent reports. Mangrove cover was negatively related to built area, cropland, bare ground, rangeland and total human population, but positively related to the number of fishing boats and total tree cover. In addition, we identified other potential anthropogenic threats to mangroves and categorised them into forest clearing or deforestation, over-extraction and pollution. The benefits of mangrove cover expansion, adoption of mangrove-friendly aquaculture and revitalising degraded mangrove forests outweigh their constraints. Our work provided a locally relevant understanding of the potential causes of mangrove loss and the values of human actions in mangrove dynamics, which will contribute to reliable and informed decision-making for the conservation of mangrove species and restoration of mangrove forests in SBPS.

Abstract
Nutrient pollution in the coastal environment has been accelerated by progressively intensifying aquaculture activities. Excessive nutrients can lead to coastal eutrophication with serious economic and ecological consequences. In this study, we studied coastal planktonic microbial community over a year to understand the aquaculture impact on coastal water quality and function. We observed increased total inorganic nitrogen concentrations in active fish farms to favor the diverse Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria. Bacterial community alpha diversity in fish farms was positively correlated with total inorganic nitrogen, and active fish farming co-influenced the bacterial structural composition and regional beta diversity. By analyzing the nitrogen cycle-related functional compositions and pathways using PICRUSt2 prediction on inferred genomes, we identified the contribution of over 600 bacterial species to four major pathways. Enhanced nitrogen load in active fish farms was positively correlated with elevated dissimilatory nitrate reduction and denitrification pathway abundances. Fallowed fish farms were characterized by a predicted high abundance of nirA and narB genes contributing to assimilatory nitrate reduction pathway due to the prevalence of Cyanobacteria. Overall, these results suggested active operation and short hiatus in coastal aquaculture practices could rapidly impact planktonic bacterial communities and further influence nitrogen cycling and associated processes. These findings will improve the understanding of the responses and interactions between microbiome and aquaculture activities. In a world of increasing aquaculture demands, this work has important implications for sustainable water resource management and development.

Abstract
Food safety and sustainable food production is an important part of the Sustainable Development goals aiming to safeguard the health and wellbeing of humans, animals and the environment. Foodborne illness is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly as the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance proliferates. In order to actively move towards sustainable food production, it is imperative that green biocontrol options are implemented to prevent and mitigate infectious disease in food production. Replacing current chemical pesticides, antimicrobials and disinfectants with green, organic options such as biopesticides is a step towards a sustainable future. Bacteriophages, virus which infect and kill bacteria are an area of great potential as biocontrol agents in agriculture and aquaculture. Lytic bacteriophages offer many advantages over traditional chemical-based solutions to control microbiological contamination in the food industry. The innate specificity for target bacterial species, their natural presence in the environment and biocompatibility with animal and humans means phages are a practical biocontrol candidate at all stages of food production, from farm-to-fork. Phages have demonstrated efficacy as bio-sanitisation and bio-preservation agents against many foodborne pathogens, with activity against biofilm communities also evident. Additionally, phages have long been recognised for their potential as therapeutics, prophylactically and metaphylactically. Further investigation is warranted however, to overcome their limitations such as formulation and stability issues, phage resistance mechanisms and transmission of bacterial virulence factors.

Abstract
Haematococcus lacustris is a chlamydomonadalean with high biotechnological interest owing to its capacity to produce astaxanthin, a valuable secondary carotenoid with extraordinary antioxidation properties. However, its prolonged growth has limited its utility commercially. Thus, rapid growth to attain high densities of H. lacustris cells optimally producing astaxanthin is an essential biotechnological target to facilitate profitable commercialisation. Our study focused on characterising the bacterial communities associated with the alga's phycosphere by metagenomics. Subsequently, we altered the bacterial consortia in combined co-culture with key beneficial bacteria to optimise the growth of H. lacustris. The algal biomass increased by up to 2.1-fold in co-cultures, leading to a 1.6-fold increase in the astaxanthin yield. This study attempted to significantly improve the H. lacustris growth rate and biomass yield via Next-Generation Sequencing analysis and phycosphere bacterial augmentation, highlighting the possibility to overcome the hurdles associated with astaxanthin production by H. lacustris at a commercial scale.
