Effect of different hydrogen evolution rates at cathode on bioelectrochemical reduction of CO2 to acetate

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) offers a promising approach for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals such as acetate. However, the relative low conversion rate severely limits its practical application. This study investigated the impact of different hydrogen evolution rates on the conversion rate of CO2 to acetate in the MES system. Three potentials (-0.8 V, -0.9 V and -1.0 V) corresponding to various hydrogen evolution rates were set and analyzed, revealing an optimal hydrogen evolution rate, yielding a maximum acetate formation rate of 1410.9 mg/L and 73.5 % coulomb efficiency. The electrochemical findings revealed that an optimal hydrogen evolution rate facilitated the formation of an electroactive biofilm. The microbial community of the cathode biofilm highlighted key genera, including Clostridium and Acetobacterium, which played essential roles in electrosynthesis within the MES system. Notably, a low hydrogen evolution rate failed to provide sufficient energy for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to acetate, while a high rate led to cathode alkalinization, impeding the reaction and causing significant energy wastage. Therefore, maintaining an appropriate hydrogen evolution rate is crucial for the development of mature electroactive biofilms and achieving optimal performance in the MES system.

Key issues to consider toward an efficient constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell: the idea and the reality

The research on constructed wetland (CW) and microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been separate studies worldwide with crucial achievements being made in both fields. Due to environmentally friendly feature (of CW) and rich microbial population and excellent electrode catalytic activity (of MFC), CW and MFC have their own anticipated application prospect in wastewater purification and biological electricity generation. More significantly, the idea of embedding MFC into CW to form CW-MFC expands the scope for both of them and this has received much interest in recent years due to its striking features of sewage treatment efficiency, electricity generation, sustainability, and environmental friendliness. The increasing interest and the lack of soul of CW-MFC emerging to the new researchers reflect the need to recall the idea and summarize its development with regard to achieving its reality via some key issues This forms the basis of the paper. The paper also includes how to enhance the efficiency of electricity generation and supplement energy consumption, the degradation of emerging pollutants, and the degradation mechanism as well as the potential joint application of CW-MFC with other treatment technique. A mass of CW-MFC design parameters has been synthesized from the literature. Challenges and potential directions of CW-MFC in the future are prospected. It is expected that the paper can serve as a linkage for bridging knowledge gaps for further studies of CW-MFC.

Embedded Graphite and Carbon Nanofibers in a Polyurethane Matrix Used as Anodes in Microbial Fuel Cells for Wastewater Treatment

Composites of polyurethane and graphite and polyurethane and carbon nanofibers (PU/Graphite 0.5% and PU/CNF 1%) were synthesized and used as anodes in dual-compartment microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for municipal wastewater treatment; electrical energy generation and organic matter removal were assessed. The maximum power density, coulombic efficiency and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency in the MFCs packed with the PU/Graphite 0.5% and PU/CNF 1% composites were 232.32 mW/m3 and 90.78 mW/m3, 5.87 and 4.41%, and 51.38 and 68.62%, respectively. In addition, the internal resistance of the MFCs with the best bioelectrochemical performance (PU/Graphite 0.5%) was 1051.11 Ω. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the feasibility of using these types of materials in dual-compartment MFCs for wastewater treatment with electric power generation.

Long-term operation of cathode-enhanced ecological floating bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system for urban surface water remediation: From lab-scale research to engineering application

Ecological floating bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system (ECOFB-MES) has great application potential in micro-polluted water remediation yet limited by low electron transfer efficiency on the microbial/electrode interface. Here, an innovative cathode-enhanced EOCFB-MES was constructed with nano-Fe₃O₄ modification and applied for in-situ remediation both at lab scale (6 L, 62-day operation) and demonstration scale (2300 m², 1-year operation). The cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES exhibited superior removal in TOC (81.43 ± 2.05%), TN (85.12% ± 1.46%) and TP (59.80 ± 2.27%), much better than those of original ECOFB-MES and anode-enhanced ECOFB-MES in the laboratory test. Meanwhile, cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES boosted current output by 33% than that of original ECOFB-MES, which made a great contribution to the improvement of ectopic electronic compensation for pollutant decontamination. Notably, cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES presented high efficiency, stability and durability in the demonstration test, and fulfilled the average concentration of COD (9.5 ± 2.81 mg/L), TN (1.00 ± 0.21 mg/L) and TP (0.10 ± 0.04 mg/L) of effluent water to meet the Grade III (GB 3838-2002) with stable operation stage. Based on the KOSIM calculation, the removal loads of cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus could reach 37.14 g COD/(d·m²), 2.62 g TN/(d·m²) and 0.55 g TP/(d·m²), respectively. According to the analysis of microbial communities and functional genes, the cathode modified by Fe₃O₄ made a sensible enrichment in electroactive bacteria (EAB) and nitrogen-converting bacteria (NCB) as well as facilitated the functional genes expression in electron transfer and nitrogen metabolism, resulting in the synergistic removal of carbon in sediment and nitrite in water. This study provided a brandnew technique reference for in-situ remediation of surface water in practical application.
