Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing interns are one of the most crucial providers of nursing services. Their safety behaviors are closely associated with adverse events. Therefore, it is vital to explore the factors influencing nursing intern safety behavior to improve patient safety. OBJECTIVE To evaluate patient safety behavior among nursing interns and explore latent influencing mechanisms based on the capability opportunity motivation-behavior (COMB) model. DESIGN A cross-sectional study SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: The participants were 422 nursing interns recruited through convenience sampling from a comprehensive teaching hospital. METHODS Data on general information, nursing interns' patient safety behavior, metacognitive ability, clinical internship environment, and moral sensitivity were collected. Nursing interns' patient safety behavior was described with means and standard deviations. The independent sample t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and SEM were used to determine contributing factors to nursing interns' patient safety behavior. RESULTS The mean total score for patient safety behavior was 53.08 ± 6.22. The results indicated that metacognitive ability not only directly affects the patient safety behavior of nursing interns (β = 0.554, P < 0.001, 95 % CI = [0.446, 0.637]) but indirectly affects interns' safety behavior through professional identity (β = 0.009, P = 0.031, 95 % CI = [0.001, 0.019]). The clinical internship environment also has both direct (β = 0.258, P = 0.001, 95 % CI = [0.166, 0.349]) and indirect (β = 0.007, P = 0.029, 95 % CI = [0.001, 0.015]) effects on the patient safety behavior of nursing interns. CONCLUSION There are some specific areas where nursing interns' safety behaviors need to be improved. This study reveals that strong metacognitive ability and a clinical internship environment with rich opportunities might be essential for the development of patient safety behaviors. To promote nursing interns' patient safety behaviors, clinical teachers could use reflective teaching methods and provide a supportive clinical environment to nurture nursing interns' professional identities and patient safety behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a chronic disease with numerous complications. Therefore, its effective management depends on home-based pulmonary rehabilitation. The effectiveness of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation programmes in turn depends on patient adherence to them. The aim of this study was to explore the barriers to adherence to home-based pulmonary rehabilitation among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive design. SETTING The lung care wards of Al-Zahra and Khorshid teaching hospitals and the comprehensive lung care clinic of Khorshid hospital, Isfahan, Iran. PARTICIPANTS Participants patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n=20), their family caregivers (n=15) and healthcare providers (n=14) recruited via purposive sampling. RESULTS The five main categories of the barriers to adherence to home-based pulmonary rehabilitation among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were patient-related barriers, caregivers' caregiving burden, limited support for patients, healthcare providers' limited professional competence and ineffective home-based pulmonary rehabilitation planning. CONCLUSION Different and complex factors related to patients, families and healthcare providers can affect adherence to home-based pulmonary rehabilitation among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Healthcare authorities can use the findings of this study to develop strategies to support patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their family caregivers and thereby reduce the physical and mental complications of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to describe the development and validation of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for a pharmacy intern training program in Australia. METHODS Performance outcomes with EPAs suggested as an assessment in the intern year were identified and EPAs were developed. The EQual rubric, designed for EPAs in graduate medical education settings, was used to validate the EPAs. Eight subject matter experts were recruited to validate 14 EPAs using prespecified cutoffs in the EQual rubric to determine the degree of alignment with established key domains of the EPA construct. Descriptive statistics for the EQual rubric scores were calculated for each of the 14 EPAs overall and for each of the 3 domains. Any EPA falling below the prespecified cut score required revisions and a second round of validation. RESULTS Eight responses were recorded for the first round of validation. Seven EPAs were below the discrete units of work cutoff (4.17); 2 of these EPAs were also below the EPA curricular role cutoff (4.00). All scores described in the EPAs as entrustable, essential, and important tasks of the profession were above the cutoff (4.00). Seven subject matter experts responded to the second round of validation. All 7 revised EPAs scored above the EQual rubric's overall cutoff of 4.07. CONCLUSION Fourteen EPAs were validated for use with provisionally registered (intern) pharmacists. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the EQual rubric has been used in the evaluation and validation of pharmacy EPAs.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to compare the associations between workplace violence and patient safety behaviour between male and female nursing interns. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was carried out at three general hospitals in Shandong Province in China to collect data from 466 nursing interns. We evaluated the associations between workplace violence and patient safety behaviours in men and women using multiple linear regressions. RESULTS Sex moderated the association between workplace violence and patient safety behaviour (B = 1.046, [SE = 0.477]; p = 0.029). Among male nursing interns, there was a significant association between workplace violence and patient safety (B = -1.353, 95% CI [-2.556, -0.151]; p = 0.028). In male nursing interns, verbal violence and sexual violence were significantly negatively associated with patient safety (B = -1.569, SE = 0.492, p = 0.002; B = -45.663, SE = 5.554, p < 0.001). No significant association was found in female nursing interns. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study did not have a patient or public contribution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Safety culture questionnaires are widely used in healthcare to understand how staff feel at work, their attitudes and views, and the influence this has on safe and high-quality patient care. A known challenge of safety culture questionnaires is achieving high response rates to enhance reliability and validity. This review examines predictors of response rates, explores reasons provided for low response rates and identifies strategies to improve those rates. METHODS Four bibliometric databases were searched for studies assessing safety culture in hospitals from January 2008 to May 2022. Data were extracted from 893 studies that included a safety culture questionnaire conducted in the hospital setting. Regression was used to predict response rate based on recruitment and data collection methods (incentives, reminders, method of survey administration) and country income classification. Reasons for low response were thematically analysed and used to identify strategies to improve response rates. RESULTS Of the 893 studies that used a questionnaire to assess safety culture in hospitals, 75.6% reported a response rate. Response rates varied from 4.2% to 100%, with a mean response rate of 66.5% (SD=21.0). Regression analyses showed that safety culture questionnaires conducted in low-income and middle-income countries were significantly more likely to yield a higher response rate compared with high-income countries. Mode of administration, questionnaire length and timing of administration were identified as key factors. Remote methods of questionnaire data collection (electronic and by post) were significantly less likely to result in a higher response rate. Reasons provided for low response included: survey fatigue, time constraints, and lack of resources. CONCLUSION This review presents strategies for researchers and hospital staff to implement when conducting safety culture questionnaires: principally, distribute questionnaires in-person, during meetings or team training sessions; use a local champion; and consider the appropriate time of distribution to manage survey fatigue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse events in healthcare are primarily due to system failures rather than individuals. Risk reduction strategies should therefore focus on strengthening systems, bringing about improvements in governance, and targeting individual practices or products. The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review to develop a global framework of management strategies for sustaining a safety-oriented culture in healthcare organizations, focusing on patient safety and the adoption of good safety-related practices. METHODS We conducted a search on safety-related strategies in 2 steps. The first involved a search in the PubMed database to identify effective, broadly framed, cross-sector domains relevant to clinical risk management strategies in healthcare systems. In the second step, we then examined the strategies adopted by running a scoping review for each domain. RESULTS Our search identified 8 strategy domains relevant to patient safety: transformational leadership, patient engagement, human resources management quality, innovation technology, skills certification, education in patient safety, teamwork, and effective communication. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review explores management strategies key to healthcare systems' efforts to create safety-oriented organizations. Improvement efforts should focus particularly on the domains identified: combined together, they would nurture an overall safety-oriented culture and have an impact on preventable adverse events.

Abstract
Background Patient safety competencies in nursing are essential for the quality of healthcare. To develop practices and collaboration in nursing care, valid instruments that measure competencies in patient safety are needed. Objective To identify instruments that measure the patient safety competencies of nurses. Design A scoping review. Data sources The Cochran Library, Epistemonikos, Eric, Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for articles reporting on instruments measuring patient safety competence in nursing. The search was limited to English peer-reviewed scientific papers published from January 2010 to April 2021. Review method A blinded selection of articles fulfilling the inclusion criteria was performed by two researchers based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Data were then extracted, synthesised and presented in tables and text. Results Our search identified 1,426 papers, of which 32 met the inclusion criteria. The selected papers described nine instruments, of which the ‘Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey’ was the most used instrument. The identified instruments comprised domains for patient safety skills, attitudes, knowledge, communication, teamwork and errors. The instruments had been tested for content (face) and construct validity as well as for reliability. However, sensitivity and responsiveness were rarely assessed. Conclusions Over the last decade, there has been a growing body of instruments aimed at measuring patient safety competencies among nurses. The future development of new instruments should consider including the important dimension of ethics in patient safety as well as evaluating the instrument’s responsiveness to be able to track changes over time.

Abstract
Background: Despite the growing use of dual task training (DTT) in clinical practice with people with Parkinson Disease (PD), there is still limited evidence on how to best implement it. Data regarding professionals’ difficulties when integrating such practices are critical as a first step to generate further guidance on how to apply it. The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties perceived by professionals to integrate dual task in their practice. Methods: A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was conducted using a web-based survey. Convenience sampling was used to recruit exercise and healthcare professionals working with people with PD through various social media channels. Data were collected and then analyzed thematically using the method of constant comparisons. The study report follows the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Of the 205 eligible responses, 68.8% were Physiotherapist. The majority of the participants reported having Parkinson-specific training (91.7%) and 59.0% applied DTT in individual one-on-one sessions. We identified ten categories of difficulties faced by professionals. Conclusions: Professionals struggle to integrate DTT into PD clinical care. Challenges were identified and the most significant refer to difficulties in managing the chronicity of the disease and lack of patient compliance with home exercises. Understanding current challenges towards dual task exercise will help to reflect upon strategies to be applied effectively and safe.

Abstract
AIM To measure safety performance, situational judgement test, which is a method composed of job-related situations, can be used. This study aimed to develop and test its psychometric properties by measuring the safety performance of healthcare professionals in German hospitals. DESIGN An explorative cross-sectional study. METHODS A team of researchers, nurses and physicians developed seven items, which focus on different safety areas. Descriptive statistics were calculated for each item. Cronbach's alpha was calculated as an indication of internal consistency. Spearman's correlation between the items was evaluated as analysis of construct validity. A cross-sectional survey with healthcare professionals in three German hospitals was conducted to test the developed instrument. RESULTS A total of 168 healthcare professionals participated (response rate: 39.1%). 70.2% were women, and 38.7%, 33.9%, 15.5% and 11.3% were registered nurses, nurses in training, physicians and other healthcare professionals respectively. The situational judgement test demonstrated an acceptable psychometric performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate pharmacy students' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, intentions and their behaviour towards patient safety using a theory of planned behaviour framework. DESIGN Mixed-methods research. SETTING Private university in Malaysia. PARTICIPANTS Pharmacy undergraduate students participated in the study. There were 18 students participated in the qualitative study and 272 students responded to the survey questionnaire. METHODS A convergent parallel-mixed method design, involving a quantitative survey and qualitative focus group discussions was used among pharmacy students in a private university in Malaysia. Qualitative data of transcribed verbatim texts were then subjected to a thematic content analysis framework. Multiple correlations were undertaken using the quantitative data to examine how the dependent variable (self-reported knowledge) related to the independent variables (attitudes, behavioural intentions, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control. PRIMARY OUTCOME Pharmacy students' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, behavioural intentions constructs led to their behaviour towards patient safety. SECONDARY OUTCOME The quantitative study revealed that there was a moderate positive correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and attitudes (r=0.48, p=0.03). RESULTS Pharmacy students' attitudes and perceived behavioural control constructs had positive correlations with pharmacy students' self-reported knowledge on patient safety. There was no correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and subjective norms (r=0.27, p=0.23). There was a weak positive correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and perceived behavioural control (r=0.39, p=0.04). There was no correlation between students' self-reported knowledge and behavioural intention (r=0.20, p=0.56). CONCLUSIONS Theory of planned behaviour constructs such as attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and behavioural intentions of pharmacy students, defined their behaviour towards patient safety. Pharmacy students' attitudes and perceived behavioural control constructs were correlated with their self-reported knowledge on patient safety.

Abstract
Healthcare professionals need specific safety performance skills in order to maintain and improve patient safety. The purpose of this study is to get a deeper understanding of healthcare professionals’ perspective in acute care on the topic of safety performance. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach. Healthcare professionals working in nursing were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Using content analyzing, categories were identified which present aspects of safety performance; subcategories were developed deductively. A total of 23 healthcare professionals were interviewed, of which 15 were registered nurses, five were nursing students and three were pedagogical personnel. Nine (39.1%) were <30 years old, 17 (73.9%) were female, and 9 (39.1%) had a leadership function. Results highlight the importance of safety performance as a construct of occupational health rather than of patient safety, and the role of the organization, as well as the self-responsibility of healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals should be more conscious of their role, have a deeper understanding of the interaction of individual, team, patient, organization and work environment factors.

Abstract
Improving patient safety and reducing occupational accidents are two of the main challenges in healthcare. Instruments to measure safety performance and occupational safety are rare. This study aimed to prepare and validate a German version of the adapted workplace health and safety instrument to assess the safety performance of healthcare professionals. Overall, 168 healthcare professionals participated in this explorative cross-sectional study. The instrument consists of 16 items related to safety performance in four dimensions. We calculated mean values and standard deviations for each individual item and those of the four dimensions of the instrument. We evaluated internal consistency and construct validity, explored the dimensionality of the instrument through exploratory factor analysis, and tested how our data fit with the original model with confirmatory factor analysis. Among the participants, 73.8% were nurses and nurses in training, with the majority of the sample being female (71.9%) and younger than 30 (52.5%). Cronbach's alpha for all four dimensions was >0.7. All items were loaded on factors according to the original theoretical model. Confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit (normed χ²/df = 1.43 (≤2.5), root mean square error of approximation = 0.06 (≤0.07), goodness of fit index = 0.90 (>0.90), comparative fit index = 0.95 (≥0.90), and Tucker-Lewis index = 0.93 (>0.90). The German version of the instrument demonstrated acceptable properties and was a good fit to the original theoretical model, allowing measurement of healthcare professionals' safety knowledge, motivation, compliance, and participation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate awareness and attitudes of dental students and interns about patient safety culture in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 272 undergraduate dental students and interns using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) from November 2019 to January 2020. The SAQ consists of six domains: teamwork climate, safety climate, job satisfaction, stress recognition, perception of management and work conditions. The score of SAQ ranges from 0 to 100, and a cut-off ≥75 is considered a positive attitude of patient safety. RESULTS The study included 47.1% of males and 52.9% of females with a mean age of 22.58 ± 1.3 years. Few participants (9.9%) showed a positive attitude of patient safety culture. Nearly one-third of participants (35.7%) attended a course on patient safety and 31.6% reported experiencing adverse events by them or their families. Out of six domains, job satisfaction showed the highest mean score (70.25) and 75.4% of participants felt proud to practise in the dental clinic. Female students demonstrated a significantly higher mean score of stress recognition (64.28 ± 18.98) than male students (56.98 ± 22.53) (P 0.004). The mean SAQ score increased significantly from fourth year students to interns (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS A small percentage of students demonstrated a positive attitude of patient safety and only one-third attended a patient safety course. The job satisfaction domain was highly rated and patient safety culture significantly improved from junior to senior students. Dental curricula should include patient safety courses to improve the quality and safety of patient care.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of scenario-based learning (SBL) compared to traditional demonstration method on the development of patient safety behavior in first year nursing students. During the 2016-2017 academic year, the Fundamentals of Nursing course curriculum contained the teaching of demonstration method (n=168). In the academic year 2017-2018 was performed with SBL method in the same context (n=183). Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that assesses the same three skills was implemented in both academic terms to provide standardization so that students could evaluated in terms of patient safety competency. It was found that students' performance of some of the steps assessed were not consistently between the demonstration and SBL methods across the three skills. There was a statistically significant difference between demonstration method and SBL method for students' performing the skill steps related to patient safety in intramuscular injection (p<0.05) Our results suggest that the integration of SBL into the nursing skills training may be used as a method of teaching in order to the development of patient safety skills.

Abstract
Nursing around the world is developing very dynamically and nurses are undertaking increasingly complex tasks. The extension of entitlements for nurses in Poland in the area of writing prescriptions and referrals for diagnostic tests seems to be a response to the development and changes occurring in this profession. This will improve the standards of patient care, increase access to medical services and improve the professional status of this group. The aim of this study was to analyze the opinions of nurses regarding their preparedness for administering prescriptions and referrals for diagnostic tests depending on their sense of life satisfaction and the level of occupational burnout. The study was conducted among primary care nurses using a survey technique, using a standardized scale of life satisfaction and a scale to measure burnout. In addition, this study used a proprietary survey questionnaire containing questions regarding the self-assessment of preparedness for new competences. The results showed that nurses do not feel well prepared for new tasks. The levels of life satisfaction and burnout of the nurses surveyed significantly influenced confidence regarding their preparedness for writing prescriptions and referrals for diagnostic tests. Polish nurses have a very cautious attitude towards new competences. However, this is a breakthrough and the first step towards approving the role of an advanced practice nurse in our country.

Abstract
From January 2016, nurses in Poland received new competencies for prescribing. The work is the first in Poland to elaborate on the subject of nurses' readiness to learn and develop in the context of new nursing rights regarding autonomous prescription of medication and continuation of the prescription for medication. The aim of the study is to analyze the readiness of Polish nurses to learn and develop in the context of new competencies to write prescriptions. The research was conducted among 756 nurses. The standardized questionnaire (Readiness of Employees for Learning and Development) was used. For all subscales of readiness for learning and development, average scores prevailed. The readiness to write prescriptions was significantly related to the level of openness to changes in the work environment (A1 scale), self-evaluation of past educational development (C5 scale) and educational and professional goals alignment- employee and company (scale D2) and increasing the readiness of nurses to practice all of the aforementioned agents, in particular medical devices. The readiness of nurses to learn and develop at all levels of the subscales was on an average level. Younger nurses, with a shorter seniority, having higher education and additional qualifications had a higher readiness to prescribe medications and write prescriptions. The higher readiness for learning and development was matched by a greater readiness to prescribe. The results obtained can be used to plan training and courses, as well as to create special pro-development programs, which may increase the nurses' involvement in personal and professional development.

Abstract
AIM This paper outlines the protocol for a study aimed at exploring perspectives about the role of patients' in the delivery of safe care in hospital. DESIGN Qualitative exploratory study. METHODS Research Ethics Committee approval for this study was obtained in October 2018. The study will be conducted between February-April 2019 with data collected through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews and will involve patients and healthcare professionals from hospitals in Tabriz. A descriptive qualitative approach will be adopted, and the data will be managed and analysed using MAXQDA 10 software. DISCUSSION The role of patients in furthering their own safety whilst in hospital cannot be underestimated and the results from this study can be used to support the development of practical strategies that address the delivery of safe hospital care and which involve patients and their caregivers.
