Abstract
Dense metal membranes that are based on palladium (Pd) are promising for hydrogen separation and production due to their high selectivity and permeability. Optimization of alloy composition has normally focused on bulk properties, but there is growing evidence that grain boundaries (GBs) play a crucial role in the overall performance of membranes. The present study provides parameters and analyses of GBs in the ternary Pd-Ag-Cu system, based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. The segregation tendency of Cu, Ag, and vacancies towards 12 different coherent ∑ GBs in Pd was quantified using three different procedures for relaxation of supercell lattice constants, representing the outer bounds of infinitely elastic and stiff lattice around the GBs. This demonstrated a clear linear correlation between the excess volume and the GB energy when volume relaxation was allowed for. The point defects were attracted by most of the GBs that were investigated. Realistic atomic-scale models of binary Pd-Cu and ternary Pd-Cu-Ag alloys were created for the ∑5(210) boundary, in which the strong GB segregation tendency was affirmed. This is a starting point for more targeted engineering of alloys and grain structure in dense metal membranes and related systems.

Abstract
Self-supported fcc Pd-Cu-M (M = Y, Ti, Zr, V, Nb, and Ni) alloys were studied as potential hydrogen purification membranes. The effects of small additions (1-2.6 at. %) of these elements on the structure, hydrogen solubility, diffusivity, and permeability were examined. Structural analyses by X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the fcc phase for all alloys with induced textures from cold rolling. Heat treatment at 650 °C for 96 h led to the reorientation in all alloys except the Pd-Cu-Zr alloy, exhibiting the possibility to enhance the structural stability by Zr addition. Hydrogen solubility was almost doubled in the ternary alloys containing Y and Zr compared to Pd65.1Cu34.9 alloy at 300 °C. It was noted that hydrogen diffusivity is decreased upon additions of these elements compared to the Pd65.1Cu34.9 alloy, with the Pd-Cu-Zr alloy showing the lowest hydrogen diffusivity. However, the comparable hydrogen permeability of the Pd-Cu-Zr alloy with the corresponding binary alloy, as well as its highest hydrogen permeability among the studied ternary alloys at temperatures higher than 300 °C, suggested that hydrogen permeation of these alloys within the fcc phase is mainly dominated by hydrogen solubility. Hydrogen flux variations of all ternary alloys were studied and compared with the Pd65.1Cu34.9 alloy under 1000 ppm of H2S + H2 feed gas. Pd-Cu-Zr alloy showed superior resistance to the sulfur poisoning probably due to the less favorable H2S-surface interaction and more importantly slower rate of bulk sulfidation as a result of improved structural stability upon Zr addition. Therefore, Pd-Cu-Zr alloys may offer new potential hydrogen purification membranes with improved chemical stability and hydrogen permeation compared to the binary fcc Pd-Cu alloys.

Abstract
A novel approach for preparing volatile heterometallic complexes for use as precursors for the chemical vapor deposition of various materials is reported. New CuPd complexes based on β-diketonate units were prepared, and their structures and compositions were determined. [PdL2 *CuL2 ] (1) and [PdL2 *Cu(tmhd)2 ] (2) (L=2-methoxy-2,6,6-trimethylheptane-3,5-dionate; tmhd=2,2,6,6- tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate) are 1D coordination polymers with alternating metal complexes, which are connected through weak interactions between the Cu atoms and the OCH3 groups from the ligand of the Pd complexes. The volatility and thermal stability were studied using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses and mass spectrometry. Compound 1 vaporizes without decomposition into monometallic complexes. It exhibits magnetic anisotropy, which was revealed from the angular variations in the EPR spectrum of a single crystal. The vapor thermolysis process for 1 was investigated using mass spectrometry, allowing the process to be framed within the temperature range of 200-350 °C. The experimental data, supported by QTAIM calculations of the allowed intermolecular interactions, suggest that 1 likely exists in the gas phase as bimetallic molecules. Compound 1 proved to be suitable as a single-source precursor for the efficient preparation of CuPd alloy films with tunable Cu/Pd ratio. A possible mechanism for the film growth is proposed based on the reported data.

Abstract
Addition of Ag is a promising way to enhance the H2 permeability of sulfur-tolerant PdCu membranes for cleanup of coal-derived hydrogen. We investigated a series of PdCuAg membranes with at least 70 atom % Pd to elucidate the interdependence between alloy structure and H2 permeability. Membranes were prepared via sequential electroless plating of Pd, Ag, and Cu onto ceramic microfiltration membranes and subsequent alloying at elevated temperatures. Alloy formation was complicated by a wide miscibility gap in the PdCuAg phase diagram at the practically feasible operation temperatures. X-ray diffraction showed that the lattice constants of the fully alloyed ternary alloys obey Vegard's law closely. In general, H2 permeation rates increased with increasing Ag and decreasing Cu content of the membranes in the investigated temperature range. Detailed examination of the permeation kinetics revealed compensation between activation energy and pre-exponential factor of the corresponding H2 permeation laws. The origin of this effect is discussed. Further analysis showed that the activation energy for H2 permeation decreases overall with increasing lattice constant of the ternary alloy. The combination of these correlations results in a structure-function relationship that will facilitate rational design of PdCuAg membranes.

Abstract
CONSPECTUS: Not only is hydrogen critical for current chemical and refining processes, it is also projected to be an important energy carrier for future green energy systems such as fuel cell vehicles. Scientists have examined light metal hydrides for this purpose, which need to have both good thermodynamic properties and fast charging/discharging kinetics. The properties of hydrogen in metals are also important in the development of membranes for hydrogen purification. In this Account, we highlight our recent work aimed at the large scale screening of metal-based systems with either favorable hydrogen capacities and thermodynamics for hydrogen storage in metal hydrides for use in onboard fuel cell vehicles or promising hydrogen permeabilities relative to pure Pd for hydrogen separation from high temperature mixed gas streams using dense metal membranes. Previously, chemists have found that the metal hydrides need to hit a stability sweet spot: if the compound is too stable, it will not release enough hydrogen under low temperatures; if the compound is too unstable, the reaction may not be reversible under practical conditions. Fortunately, we can use DFT-based methods to assess this stability via prediction of thermodynamic properties, equilibrium reaction pathways, and phase diagrams for candidate metal hydride systems with reasonable accuracy using only proposed crystal structures and compositions as inputs. We have efficiently screened millions of mixtures of pure metals, metal hydrides, and alloys to identify promising reaction schemes via the grand canonical linear programming method. Pure Pd and Pd-based membranes have ideal hydrogen selectivities over other gases but suffer shortcomings such as sensitivity to sulfur poisoning and hydrogen embrittlement. Using a combination of detailed DFT, Monte Carlo techniques, and simplified models, we are able to accurately predict hydrogen permeabilities of metal membranes and screen large libraries of candidate alloys, selections of which are described in this Account. To further increase the number of membrane materials that can be studied with DFT, computational costs need to be reduced either through methods development to break bottlenecks in the performance prediction algorithm, particularly related to transition state identification, or through screening techniques that take advantage of correlations to bypass constraints.
