Investigation on the role of graphene-based composites for in photocatalytic degradation of phenol-based compounds in wastewater: a review

The ineptitude of conventional water management systems to eradicate noxious compounds leads to the development of advanced treatment systems. The disclosure of graphene-based photocatalytic degradation for the eradication of phenolic compounds has become the "apple of the eye" for many researchers. This review article describes the advanced research progress during the period of 2008-2021 in graphene-based nanocomposites and discusses their different synthesis methods. We will also talk about the applications of nanocomposite in water splitting, dye degradation, solar fuel generations, and organic transformations. Multicomponent heterojunction structure, co-catalyst cohering, and noble metal coupling have been inspected to enhance the photocatalytic performance of graphene-based composite by increasing charge separation and stability. The photocatalytic system's remarkable stability has been described in terms of facile recyclability. The adsorption ability of phenolic compounds has been addressed in the form of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm with various factors (pH, concentration, the intensity of light, the effect of catalyst, the effect of time, etc.). The purpose of this review is to survey mechanisms and processes that enlist graphene-based composite in terms of efficacy and dose of catalyst required to attain 99% degradation. Nanoparticles may cause toxicity and a pretext for their toxicity has been mentioned. Finally, it is anticipated that this article could allocate consequential knowledge to fabricating graphene-based composites that are in crucial demand of being discussed in future research.

Membranes for Oil/Water Separation: A Review

Recent advancements in separation and membrane technologies have shown a great potential in removing oil from wastewaters effectively. In addition, the capabilities have improved to fabricate membranes with tunable properties in terms of their wettability, permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties that govern the treatment of oily wastewaters. Herein, authors have critically reviewed the literature on membrane technology for oil/water separation with a specific focus on: 1) membrane properties and characterization, 2) development of various materials (e.g., organic, inorganic, and hybrid membranes, and innovative materials), 3) membranes design (e.g., mixed matrix nanocomposite and multilayers), and 4) membrane fabrication techniques and surface modification techniques. The current challenges and future research directions in materials and fabrication techniques for membrane technology applications in oil/water separation are also highlighted. Thus, this review provides helpful guidance toward finding more effective, practical, and scalable solutions to tackle environmental pollution by oils.

Photocatalytic Fuel Cells for Simultaneous Wastewater Treatment and Power Generation: Mechanisms, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Technological advancement is accompanied by excessive consumption of fossil fuels and affluent uses of chemical substances in many sectors, including transportation and manufacturing companies, and so on. Being an exhaustible resource, the excessive use of fossil fuels and of chemical substances may lead to a serious energy crisis in the long run, and it may additionally impose environmental pollution. Attempts have been made in the solution of such serious issues from every nook and corner. Nonetheless, no method has been found to be a panacea in waste water treatment and subsequent beneficiaries. One of the attempts in the solution to such issues is the application of photocatalytic technology, which could serve as a dual function in environmental remediation and clean energy production. A photocatalytic fuel cell is a tool developed for the recovery of energy from organic wastes. A rational cell construction needs the fabrication of photoelectrodes, the design of a photoanode and a photocathode chamber, in addition to an ion-transport membrane for pollution treatment and electricity generation. In this review, comprehensive fundamental assessments and recent developments in the design of photocatalytic fuel cells, their applications, future prospects, and challenges are covered.

Preparation of a Coal-Based MoS2/SiO2/GO Composite Catalyst and Its Performance in the Photocatalytic Degradation of Wastewater and Hydrogen Production

Photocatalytic degradation of wastewater and the simultaneous production of hydrogen (H₂) is a green and efficient method to solve energy and environmental problems. In this paper, coal-based SiO₂/GO with a stable structure was prepared by a modified Hummers oxidation method, and then, a lotus-shaped composite photocatalyst, MoS₂/SiO₂/GO, was prepared by in situ loading of flower cluster MoS₂ from sodium molybdate reduction onto SiO₂/GO. Its photocatalytic degradation of wastewater and H₂ production properties were investigated while characterizing the material structure. The results show that SiO₂/GO as a carrier not only ensures adequate dispersion of MoS₂ but also enhances the visible-light response of the composite catalyst. In addition, it can also hinder the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in MoS₂ and act as an electron transport channel in composite catalysts. MoS₂/SiO₂/GO exhibits much higher photocatalytic degradation of wastewater and H₂ production capacity than MoS₂: after 180 min of reaction, the CODcr removal of wastewater increased from 45.6% for MoS₂ to 84.2% for MoS₂/SiO₂/GO and the H₂ yield reached 233.4 μmol. The goal of degrading wastewater while producing H₂ more economically has been tentatively achieved, although not to the extent required for industrialization.

A Bimodal Protein Fabric Enabled via In Situ Diffusion for High-Performance Air Filtration

Design and fabrication of bimodal structures are essential for successful development of advanced air filters with ultralow airflow resistance. To realize this goal, simplified processing procedures are necessary for meeting the practical needs. Here, a bimodal protein fabric with high-performance air filtration, and effectively lowered airflow resistance is reported. The various functional groups of proteins provide versatile interactions with pollutants. By utilizing a novel and cost-effective "cross-axial" configuration with an optimized condition (75° of contacting angle between solution nozzle and cospinning solvent nozzle), the diffusion in Taylor cone is in situ controlled, which results in the successful production of bimodal protein fabric. The bimodal protein fabric (16.7 g/m² areal density) is demonstrated to show excellent filtration performance for removing particulate matter (PM) pollutants and only causes 17.1 Pa air pressure drop. The study of multilayered protein fabric air filters shows a further improvement in filtration performance of removing 97% of PM_0.3 and 99% of PM_2.5 with a low airflow resistance (34.9 Pa). More importantly, the four-layered bimodal protein fabric shows an exceptional long-term performance and maintains a high removal efficiency in the humid environment. This study presents an effective and viable strategy for fabricating bimodal fibrous materials for advanced air filtration.

Progress on the Fabrication and Application of Electrospun Nanofiber Composites

Nanofibers are one of the most attractive materials in various applications due to their unique properties and promising characteristics for the next generation of materials in the fields of energy, environment, and health. Among the many fabrication methods, electrospinning is one of the most efficient technologies which has brought about remarkable progress in the fabrication of nanofibers with high surface area, high aspect ratio, and porosity features. However, neat nanofibers generally have low mechanical strength, thermal instability, and limited functionalities. Therefore, composite and modified structures of electrospun nanofibers have been developed to improve the advantages of nanofibers and overcome their drawbacks. The combination of electrospinning technology and high-quality nanomaterials via materials science advances as well as new modification techniques have led to the fabrication of composite and modified nanofibers with desired properties for different applications. In this review, we present the recent progress on the fabrication and applications of electrospun nanofiber composites to sketch a progress line for advancements in various categories. Firstly, the different methods for fabrication of composite and modified nanofibers have been investigated. Then, the current innovations of composite nanofibers in environmental, healthcare, and energy fields have been described, and the improvements in each field are explained in detail. The continued growth of composite and modified nanofiber technology reveals its versatile properties that offer alternatives for many of current industrial and domestic issues and applications.

Graphene oxide-polyethylene glycol incorporated PVDF nanocomposite ultrafiltration membrane with enhanced hydrophilicity, permeability, and antifouling performance

The novel highly hydrophilic composite additive, graphene oxide-polyethylene glycol (GO-PEG, further abbreviated as P-GO), was synthesized from GO and PEG by the esterification reaction. Then, P-GO was blended into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) casting solution as an additive, and the effects of P-GO on the performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) membrane were researched. When amount of added P-GO was 0.5 wt%, the flux of the resultant modified membrane (denoted as P/0.5P-GO) reached as high as 93 L m^-2·h^-1, that is twice than that of the pure PVDF membrane (45 L m^-2·h^-1). Furthermore, water contact angle results confirmed significantly improved hydrophilicity of the P/0.5P-GO membrane. Results of antifouling tests revealed that the P/0.5P-GO membrane showed the lowest total resistance and irreversible resistance among all the membranes prepared in this study, and after physical cleaning, its flux recovery ratio was the highest-78%. These results demonstrated improved antifouling performance of the P/0.5P-GO membrane. Therefore, it can be concluded that P-GO as an additive material for the PVDF membrane has satisfactory performance in improving the membrane hydrophilicity, permeability, and antifouling performance in practical applications.

Novel Antibacterial and Toughened Carbon-Fibre/Epoxy Composites by the Incorporation of TiO2 Nanoparticles Modified Electrospun Nanofibre Veils

The inclusion of electrospun nanofiber veils was revealed as an effective method for enhancing the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites. These veils will eventually allow the incorporation of nanomaterials not only for mechanical reinforcement but also in multifunctional applications. Therefore, this paper investigates the effect of electrospun nanofibrous veils made of polyamide 6 modified with TiO2 nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a carbon-fiber/epoxy composite. The nanofibers were included in the carbon-fiber/epoxy composite as a single structure. The effect of positioning these veils in different composite positions was investigated. Compared to the reference, the use of unmodified and TiO2 modified veils increased the flexural stress at failure and the fracture toughness of composites. When TiO2 modified veils were incorporated, new antibacterial properties were achieved due to the photocatalytic properties of the veils, widening the application area of these composites.

TiO2-Doped Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane for Photocatalytic Water Treatment

This work has been focused on the one-step fabrication by electrospinning of polyamide 6 (PA6) nanofibre membranes modified with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂), where these TiO₂ nanoparticles aggregates could induce a photocatalytic activity. The main potential application of these membranes could be the purification of contaminated water. Thus, it is important to analyse the contaminant degradation capability since in these membranes this is based on their photocatalytic activity. In this work, the effect of the photocatalysis has been studied both on the degradation of an organic model contaminant and on the removal of Escherichia coli and other coliform bacteria. As a result, it was observed that these membranes present excellent photocatalytic activity when they are irradiated under UV light, allowing a 70% reduction of an organic model pollutant after 240 min. In addition, these membranes successfully removed Escherichia coli and other coliform bacteria in artificially inoculated water after 24 h of contact with them. Moreover, the stand-alone structure of the membranes allowed for the reusing of the immobilized catalyst. The experimental evidence indicated that developed nanofibre membranes are a fast and efficient solution for polluted water decontamination based on photocatalysis. Their use could contribute to guarantee a fresh water level and quality, mitigating the water scarcity problem worldwide.

Designing Magnetic Layered Double Hydroxides and Two-Dimensional Magnetic Nano-Nets of Cobalt Ferrite through a Novel Approach

The present study has a dual aim of supporting magnetic nanoparticles over the nanolayers of LDHs and designing two-dimensional magnetic nano-nets of cobalt ferrite. In this trend, nanoparticles of CoFe2O4 were prepared and supported by Co-Fe LDH through urea hydrolysis. The nanolayered structures of Co-Fe LDH were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, FT-IR spectra, thermal analyses, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, they indicated that 13.2% CoFe2O4 were supported over Co-Fe LDH. Transformation of the nanolayered structures of Co-Fe LDH to nano-nets was achieved by the catalytic effect of the supported CoFe2O4 nanoparticles through solvent thermal technique. X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images confirmed the transformation of the supported Co-Fe LDH to nano-nets of cobalt ferrite. In order to indicate the effect of the LDH for designing the nano-nets, nanoparticles of cobalt ferrite were prepared by the same technique without LDH. The magnetic behavior of the nano-nets and the supported Co-Fe LDH were measured and compared with the nanoparticles through vibrating sample magnetometer technique. The magnetic parameters indicated that the prepared nano-nets have ferromagnetic behavior and high coercivity. However, the prepared nanoparticles revealed a superparamagnetic state and low coercivity. The experimental results concluded that the incorporation of nanoparticles with nanowires into nano-net structures has been found to be an efficient way to improve their magnetic properties and prevent their agglomerations. Finally, layered double hydroxides are an important source for constructing magnetic nanolayered structures and nano-nets.

Novel sulfonated graphene oxide incorporated polysulfone nanocomposite membranes for enhanced-performance in ultrafiltration process

A novel polysulfone (PSf) nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane using sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) as additives was fabricated and investigated. SGO nanoparticles were chemically synthesized from graphene oxide (GO) by using sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and were confirmed by Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The morphology of prepared membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results showed that adding small amount (less than 0.3 wt%) of SGO improved wettability, porosity and mean pore size of PSf/SGO membranes compared to the pristine PSf membrane and significantly enhanced the water flux of SGO incorporated PSf membranes. In UF performance, the nanocomposite membrane prepared by adding 1.5 w/w% SGO of PSf (designated as M1.5) showed the highest water flux result, which was 125% higher than the control PSf membrane (no SGO addition). Interestingly, there was no trade-off between water flux and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, i.e more than 98% BSA rejection. The addition of SGO hydrophilic additives also showed better results in long-term BSA separation performance. The enhancement of hybrid membrane's properties was attributed to the hydrophilicity of sulfonic acid group (SO₃H) on the surface of SGO additive. This study suggested that the SGO nanoparticle is a promising candidate to modify the PSf UF membranes.

Photocatalytic reusable membranes for the effective degradation of tartrazine with a solar photoreactor

Recalcitrant dyes present in effluents constitute a major environmental concern due to their hazardous properties that may cause deleterious effects on aquatic organisms. Tartrazine is a widely-used dye, and it is known to be resistant to biological and chemical degradation processes and by its carcinogenic and mutagenic nature. This study presents the use of TiO₂ (P25) nanoparticles immobilized into a poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) membrane to assess the photocatalytic degradation of this dye in a solar photoreactor. The nanocomposite morphological properties were analyzed, confirming an interconnected porous microstructure and the homogeneous distribution of the TiO₂ nanoparticles within the membrane pores. It is shown that the nanocomposite with 8wt% TiO₂ exhibits a remarkable sunlight photocatalytic activity over five hours, with 78% of the pollutant being degraded. It was also demonstrated that the degradation follows pseudo-first-order kinetics model at low initial tartrazine concentration. Finally, the effective reusability of the produced nanocomposite was also assessed.

Advanced Fabrication of Chemically Bonded Graphene/TiO2 Continuous Fibers with Enhanced Broadband Photocatalytic Properties and Involved Mechanisms Exploration

In this article, a novel route for the synthesis of graphene/TiO₂ continuous fibers (GTF) using force-spinning combined with water vapor annealing method is reported for the first time. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the composite were fully characterized. With a single step of heat treatment process using steam at ambient conditions, we were able to initiate a series of chemical reactions, such as reduction of graphene oxide (GO), crystallization of TiO₂, formation of C-Ti bond, and introduction of oxygen vacancies into TiO₂. The incorporation of graphene in TiO₂ fibers facilitated bandgap narrowing and improved photo-induced charge separation in the photocatalyst. As a result of synergistic effects, TiO₂ fibers-2 wt% graphene (2%GTF) showed the highest photocatalytic activities in the degradation of X-3B under UV irradiation, superior to the benchmark photocatalyst P25. Under visible light irradiation, the same catalyst was about 4 times more efficient compared to pure TiO₂ fibers (PTF). A detailed study of involved active species (in particular, ·, h⁺ and ·OH) unraveled the mechanism regarding photocatalysis.

Bimodal fibrous structures for tissue engineering: Fabrication, characterization and in vitro biocompatibility

We report for the first time a polycaprolactone-human serum albumin (PCL-HSA) membrane with bimodal structures comprised of spider-web-like nano-nets and conventional fibers via facile electro-spinning/netting (ESN) technique. Such unique controllable morphology was developed by electrospinning the blend solution of PCL (8wt% in HFIP 1,1,1,3,3,3,-Hexafluoro-2-propanol) and HSA (10wt% deionized water). The phase separation during electrospinning caused the formation of bimodal structure. Various processing factors such as applied voltage, feeding rate, and distance between nozzle tip and collector were found responsible for the formation and distribution of the nano-nets throughout the nanofibrous mesh. Field emission electron microscopy (FE-SEM) confirmed that the nano-nets were composed of interlinked nanowires with an ultrathin diameter (10-30nm). When compared with a pure PCL membrane, the membrane containing nano-nets was shown to have better support for cellular activities as determined by cell viability and attachment assays. These results revealed that the blending of albumin, a hydrophilic biomolecule, with PCL, a hydrophobic polymer, proves to be an outstanding approach to developing membranes with controlled spider-web-like nano-nets for tissue engineering.

Molecular entrapment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by electrospun cyclodextrin nanofibers

In this paper, we reported the molecular entrapment performance of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) electrospun nanofibers (NF) for two common volatile organic compounds (VOCs); aniline and benzene. The encapsulation efficiency of CD samples were investigated depending on the various factors such as; CD form (NF and powder), electrospinning solvent (DMF and water), CD (HPβCD and HPγCD) and VOCs (aniline and benzene) types. BET analysis indicated that, electrospun CD NF have higher surface area compared to their powder form. In addition DMA measurement provided information about the mechanical properties of CD NF. The encapsulation capability of CD NF and CD powder was investigated by (1)H-NMR and HPLC techniques. The observed results suggested that, CD NF can entrap higher amount of VOCs from surroundings compared to their powder forms. Besides, molecular entrapment efficiency of CD NF also depends on CD, solvent and VOCs types. The inclusion complexation between CD and VOCs was determined by using TGA technique, from the higher decomposition temperature of VOCs. Finally, our results were fortified by the modeling studies which indicated the complexation efficiency variations between CD and VOC types. Here, the inclusion complexation ability of CD molecules was combined with very high surface area and versatile features of CD NF. So these findings revealed that, electrospun CD NF can serve as useful filtering material for air filtration purposes due to their molecular entrapment capability of VOCs.

Novel, Facile, Single-Step Technique of Polymer/TiO₂ Nanofiber Composites Membrane for Photodegradation of Methylene Blue

Novel photocatalyst membrane materials were successfully fabricated by an air jet spinning (AJS) technique from polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) solutions containing nanoparticles (NPs) of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Our innovative strategy for the production of composite nanofibers is based on stretching a solution of polymer with a high-speed compressed air jet. This enabled us to rapidly cover different substrates with TiO2/PVAc interconnected nanofibers. Surprisingly, the diameters of the as-spun fibers were found to decrease with increasing amount of NPs. Our results showed that AJS PVAc-based fibrous membranes with average fiber diameters of 505-901 nm have an apparent porosity of about 79-93% and a mean pore size of 1.58-5.12 μm. Embedding NPs onto the as-spun fibers resulted in increasing the tensile strength of the obtained composite fiber mats. The photodegradation property of TiO2 membrane mats proved a high efficiency in the decomposition of methylene blue dye. The novel fiber spinning technique discussed in this paper can provide the capacity to lace together a variety of types of polymers, fibers and particles to produce interconnected fibers layer. Our approach, therefore, opens the door for the innovation in nanocomposite mat that has great potential as efficient and economic water filter media and as reusable photocatalyst.

One-step fabrication of multifunctional composite polyurethane spider-web-like nanofibrous membrane for water purification

A stable silver-doped fly ash/polyurathene (Ag-FA/PU) nanocomposite multifunctional membrane is prepared by a facile one-step electrospinning process using fly ash particles (FAPs). Colloidal solution of PU with FAPs and Ag metal precursor was subjected to fabricate nanocomposite spider-web-like membrane using electrospinning process. Presence of N,N-dimethylformamide (solvent of PU) led to reduce silver nitrate into Ag NPs. Incorporation of Ag NPs and FAPs through electrospun PU fibers is proven through electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques. Presence of these NPs on PU nanofibers introduces several potential physicochemical properties such as spider-web-like nano-neeting for NPs separation, enhanced absorption capacity to remove carcinogenic arsenic (As) and toxic organic dyes, and antibacterial properties with reduce bio-fouling for membrane filter application. Preliminary observations used for above-mentioned applications for water treatment showed that it will be an economically and environmentally friendly nonwoven matrix for water purification. This simple approach highlights new avenues about the utilization of one pollutant material to control other pollutants in scalable and inexpensive ways.
