Abstract
The selective separation of metal species from various sources is highly desirable in applications such as hydrometallurgy, water treatment, and energy production but also challenging. Monovalent cation exchange membranes (CEMs) show a great potential to selectively separate one metal ion over others of the same or different valences from various effluents in electrodialysis. Selectivity among metal cations is influenced by both the inherent properties of membranes and the design and operating conditions of the electrodialysis process. The research progress and recent advances in membrane development and the implication of the electrodialysis systems on counter-ion selectivity are extensively reviewed in this work, focusing on both structure-property relationships of CEM materials and influences of process conditions and mass transport characteristics of target ions. Key membrane properties, such as charge density, water uptake, and polymer morphology, and strategies for enhancing ion selectivity are discussed. The implications of the boundary layer at the membrane surface are elucidated, where differences in the mass transport of ions at interfaces can be exploited to manipulate the transport ratio of competing counter-ions. Based on the progress, possible future R&D directions are also proposed.

Abstract
Anion-exchange membranes modified with a polyquaternium-22 (PQ-22) polymer were studied for their use in electrodialysis. The use of PQ-22 for modification makes it possible to "replace" weakly basic amino groups on the membrane surface with quaternary amino groups. It was found that the content of quaternary amino groups in PQ-22 is higher than the content of carboxyl groups, which is the reason for the effectiveness of this polymer even when modifying Ralex AHM-PES membranes that initially contain only quaternary amino groups. In the case of membranes containing weakly basic amino groups, the PQ-22 polymer modification efficiency is even higher. The surface charge of the modified MA-41P membrane increased, while the limiting current density on the current-voltage curves increased by more than 1.5 times and the plateau length decreased by 2.5 times. These and other characteristics indicate that the rate of water splitting decreased and the electroconvective mixing at the membrane surface intensified, which was confirmed by direct visualization of vortex structures. Increasing the surface charge of the commercial MA-41P anion-exchange membrane, reducing the rate of water splitting, and enhancing electroconvection leads to mitigated scaling on its surface during electrodialysis.

Abstract
An extracellular electron transfer (EET) process between an electroactive biofilm and an electrode is a crucial step for the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which is highly related to the enrichment of exoelectrogens and the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode. Herein, an efficient N- and Fe-abundant carbon cloth (CC) electrode with the comodification of iron porphyrin (FePor) and polyquaternium-7 (PQ) was synthesized using a facile solvent evaporation and immersion method and developed as an anode (named FePor-PQ) in MFCs. The surface structural characterizations confirmed the successful introduction of N and Fe atoms, whereas FePor-PQ achieved the N content of 9.59 at %, which may offer various active sites for EET. The introduction of PQ contributed to improving the surface hydrophilicity, providing the composite electrode good biocompatibility for bacterial attachment and colonization as well as substrate diffusion. Based on the advantages, the MFC with the FePor-PQ anode produced a maximum power density of 2165.7 mW m-2, strikingly higher than those of CC (1124.0 mW m-2), PQ (1668.8 mW m-2), and FePor (1978.9 mW m-2). Furthermore, with the EET mediated by the binding of flavins and c-type cytochromes on the outer membrane was enhanced prominently, the typical exoelectrogen Geobacter was enriched up to 55.84% in the FePor-PQ anode biofilm. This work reveals a synergistic effect from heteroatom coating and surface properties tailoring to boost both the EET efficiency and exoelectrogen enrichment for enhancing MFC performance, which also provides valuable insights for designing electrodes in other bio-electrochemical systems.

Abstract
Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are undergoing prosperous development in recent years. More than 30,000 papers which are indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) have been published on IEMs during the past twenty years (2001-2020). Especially, more than 3000 papers are published in the year of 2020, revealing researchers' great interest in this area. This paper firstly reviews the different types (e.g., cation exchange membrane, anion exchange membrane, proton exchange membrane, bipolar membrane) and electrochemical properties (e.g., permselectivity, electrical resistance/ionic conductivity) of IEMs and the corresponding working principles, followed by membrane synthesis methods, including the common solution casting method. Especially, as a promising future direction, green synthesis is critically discussed. IEMs are extensively applied in various applications, which can be generalized into two big categories, where the water-based category mainly includes electrodialysis, diffusion dialysis and membrane capacitive deionization, while the energy-based category mainly includes reverse electrodialysis, fuel cells, redox flow battery and electrolysis for hydrogen production. These applications are comprehensively discussed in this paper. This review may open new possibilities for the future development of IEMs.

Abstract
Developing monovalent cation permselective membranes (MCPMs) with high-efficient permselectivity is the core concern in specific industrial applications. In this work, we have fabricated a series of novel cation exchange membranes (CEMs) based on sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) surface modification by polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 4′-aminobenzo-12-crown-4 (12C4) codeposited with dopamine (DA) successively, which was followed by the cross-linking of glutaraldehyde (GA). The as-prepared membranes before and after modification were systematically characterized with regard to their structures as well as their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Particularly, the codeposition sequence of modified ingredients was investigated on galvanostatic permselectivity to cations. The modified membrane (M-12C4-0.50-PEI) exhibits significantly prominent selectivity to Li+ ions (PMg2+Li+ = 5.23) and K+ ions (PMg2+K+ = 13.56) in Li+/Mg2+ and K+/Mg2+ systems in electrodialysis (ED), which is far superior to the pristine membrane (M-0, PMg2+Li+ = 0.46, PMg2+K+ = 1.23) at a constant current density of 5.0 mA·cm−2. It possibly arises from the synergistic effects of electrostatic repulsion (positively charged PEI), pore-size sieving (distribution of modified ingredients), and specific interaction effect (12C4 ~Li+). This facile strategy may provide new insights into developing selective CEMs in the separation of specific cations by ED.

Abstract
Reverse electrodialysis (RED) represents one of the most promising membrane-based technologies for clean and renewable energy production from mixing water solutions. However, the presence of multivalent ions in natural water drastically reduces system performance, in particular, the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and the output power. This effect is largely described by the “uphill transport” phenomenon, in which multivalent ions are transported against the concentration gradient. In this work, recent advances in the investigation of the impact of multivalent ions on power generation by RED are systematically reviewed along with possible strategies to overcome this challenge. In particular, the use of monovalent ion-selective membranes represents a promising alternative to reduce the negative impact of multivalent ions given the availability of low-cost materials and an easy route of membrane synthesis. A thorough assessment of the materials and methodologies used to prepare monovalent selective ion exchange membranes (both cation and anion exchange membranes) for applications in (reverse) electrodialysis is performed. Moreover, transport mechanisms under conditions of extreme salinity gradient are analyzed and compared for a better understanding of the design criteria. The ultimate goal of the present work is to propose a prospective research direction on the development of new membrane materials for effective implementation of RED under natural feed conditions.

Abstract
Surface modification has been proven to be an effective approach for ion exchange membranes to achieve separation of counterions with different valences by altering interfacial construction of membranes to improve ion transfer performance. In this work, we have fabricated a series of novel cation exchange membranes (CEMs) by modifying sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) membranes via codeposition of mussel-inspired dopamine (DA) and 4'-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 (ACE), followed by glutaraldehyde cross-linking, aiming at achieving selective separation of specific cations. The as-prepared membranes before and after modification were systematically characterized in terms of their structural, physicochemical, electrochemical, and electrodialytic properties. In the electrodialysis process, the modified membranes exhibit distinct perm selectivity to K+ ions in binary (K+/Li+, K+/Na+, K+/Mg2+) and ternary (K+/Li+/Mg2+) systems. In particular, at a constant current density of 5.0 mA·cm-2, modified membrane M-co-0.50 shows significantly prominent perm selectivity [Formula: see text] in the K+/Mg2+ system and M-co-0.75 exhibits remarkable performance in the K+/Li+ system [Formula: see text], superior to commercial monovalent-selective CEM (CIMS, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]). Besides, in the K+/Li+/Mg2+ ternary system, K+ flux reaches 30.8 nmol·cm-2·s-1 for M-co-0.50, while it reaches 25.8 nmol·cm-2·s-1 for CIMS. It possibly arises from the effects of pore-size sieving and the synergistic action of electric field driving and host-guest molecular recognition of ACE and K+ ions. This study can provide new insights into the separation of specific alkali metal ions, especially on reducing influence of coexisting cations K+ and Na+ on Li+ ion recovery from salt lake and seawater.

Abstract
An antibacterial superabsorbent polymer was prepared by graft polymerization of acrylic acid onto tara gum polysaccharide, by adding N,N-dimethyl-N-2-propenyl-2-propen-1-aminium chloride and a polymer with 2-propenamide (polyquaternium-7, PQ7) as an antibacterial agent. The effects of the amount of PQ7 in the hydrogel on its swelling ratio were investigated and maximum swelling ratios of 712 g/g and 68 g/g, in distilled water and 0.9 wt % NaCl solution were attained with 0.5 g PQ7 per gram of tara gum. The superabsorbent hydrogel was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results showed that poly (acrylic acid) was successfully grafted onto tara gum and a three-dimensional network structure formed with PQ7 chains penetrated in the networks. The antibacterial properties of these superabsorbent hydrogels against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli improved with increasing PQ7 content. This study demonstrates a method of preparing novel functional superabsorbent hydrogels.
