Selective transportation of charged ZnO nanoparticles and microorganism dialysis through silicon nanoporous membranes

Synergistic Microbial Inhibition and Quality Preservation for Grapes through High-Voltage Electric Field Cold Plasma and Nano-ZnO Antimicrobial Film Treatment

To ensure their quality and safety, harvested grapes should be protected from microbial contamination before reaching consumers. For the first time, this study combined high-voltage electric field cold plasma (HVEF-CP) and nano-ZnO antimicrobial film to inhibit microbial growth on grapes. Using the response surface method, the optimal processing parameters of HVEF-CP (a voltage of 78 kV, a frequency of 110 Hz, and a time of 116 s) were identified to achieve 96.29% sterilization. The effects of co-processing with HVEF-CP and nano-ZnO antimicrobial film on the quality and safety of grapes during storage were explored. When stored at 4 °C and 20 °C, the co-processing extended the shelf life of grapes to 14 and 10 days, respectively. The co-processing increased the sterilization rate to 99.34%, demonstrating a synergistic effect between the two methods to ensure not only the safety of grapes but also their nutrient retention during storage. This novel approach is promising for the efficient, safe, and scalable preservation of grapes as well as other foods.

Modeling the CO2 separation capability of poly(4-methyl-1-pentane) membrane modified with different nanoparticles by artificial neural networks

Membranes are a potential technology to reduce energy consumption as well as environmental challenges considering the separation processes. A new class of this technology, namely mixed matrix membrane (MMM) can be fabricated by dispersing solid substances in a polymeric medium. In this way, the poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-based MMMs have attracted great attention to capturing carbon dioxide (CO2), which is an environmental pollutant with a greenhouse effect. The CO2 permeability in different MMMs constituted of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) and nanoparticles was comprehensively analyzed from the experimental point of view. In addition, a straightforward mathematical model is necessary to compute the CO2 permeability before constructing the related PMP-based separation process. Hence, the current study employs multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks (MLP-ANN) to relate the CO2 permeability in PMP/nanoparticle MMMs to the membrane composition (additive type and dose) and pressure. Accordingly, the effect of these independent variables on CO2 permeability in PMP-based membranes is explored using multiple linear regression analysis. It was figured out that the CO2 permeability has a direct relationship with all independent variables, while the nanoparticle dose is the strongest one. The MLP-ANN structural features have efficiently demonstrated an appealing potential to achieve the highest accurate prediction for CO2 permeability. A two-layer MLP-ANN with the 3-8-1 topology trained by the Bayesian regulation algorithm is identified as the best model for the considered problem. This model simulates 112 experimentally measured CO2 permeability in PMP/ZnO, PMP/Al2O3, PMP/TiO2, and PMP/TiO2-NT with an excellent absolute average relative deviation (AARD) of lower than 5.5%, mean absolute error (MAE) of 6.87 and correlation coefficient (R) of higher than 0.99470. It was found that the mixed matrix membrane constituted of PMP and TiO2-NT (functionalized nanotube with titanium dioxide) is the best medium for CO2 separation.

Effective clearance of uremic toxins using functionalised silicon Nanoporous membranes

In-house fabricated silicon nanoporous membranes (SNMs), functionalized for efficient clearance of uremic toxins, can lead to compact and portable dialysis systems. Efficacy of 15 nm thick SNMs, with average pore diameter of 8 nm, was tested for dialysis of two uremic toxins - urea and creatinine using custom made teflon apparatus of 2, 10 and 30 ml. The apparatus consisted of two reservoirs, with the cis containing the uremic fluid, and the trans containing the dialysate. Peristalsis was found to enhance the clearance rate by a factor of four as compared to unstirred condition. Functionalisation of the SNMs reduced protein binding, and surface binding of urea from 23% to negligible values. A lateral array of nine SNMs and a new design for the dialysis apparatus, increased the clearance rate by a factor of twelve from that of the single SNM. The arrays cleared about 42% of urea and 48% of creatinine from 30 ml of diluted serum samples, in 15 min. Periodic replacement of the trans fluid cleared about 81% of high concentration uremic toxins from the cis reservoir in 45 mins. The SNM arrays are stable, reproducible, and with the superior clearance rates for urea and creatinine, they have the potential to be used as membranes for portable hemodialysers.

Current advancements and future perspectives of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer research

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the first-line chemotherapy drug for colorectal cancer but most of the patients get resistant to the drug on a longer course of treatment. After the successful use of immunotherapy in melanoma treatment, it was explored with enthusiasm in different types of solid cancers including colorectal cancer. Nivolumab and pembrolizumab (Programmed cell death-1 blocking antibodies) have shown efficacy in the mismatch repair deficient high microsatellite instability (dMMR-MSI-H) subtype of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Immunotherapy has shown long time remission in a subset of metastatic CRC patients. The molecular mechanism and emerging roles of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer are explored in this review article and future directions for the proper utilization of the development in immunobiology are suggested.
