Understanding the Impacts of Molecular and Macromolecular Crowding Agents on Protein-Polymer Complex Coacervates

Complex coacervation refers to the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) process occurring between charged macromolecules. The study of complex coacervation is of great interest due to its implications in the formation of membraneless organelles (MLOs) in living cells. However, the impacts of the crowded intracellular environment on the behavior and interactions of biomolecules involved in MLO formation are not fully understood. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of crowding on a model protein-polymer complex coacervate system. Specifically, we examined the influence of sucrose as a molecular crowder and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a macromolecular crowder. Our results reveal that the presence of crowders led to the formation of larger coacervate droplets that remained stable over a 25-day period. While sucrose had a minimal effect on the physical properties of the coacervates, PEG led to the formation of coacervates with distinct characteristics, including higher density, increased protein and polymer content, and a more compact internal structure. These differences in coacervate properties can be attributed to the effects of crowders on individual macromolecules, such as the conformation of model polymers, and nonspecific interactions among model protein molecules. Moreover, our results show that sucrose and PEG have different partition behaviors: sucrose was present in both the coacervate and dilute phases, while PEG was observed to be excluded from the coacervate phase. Collectively, our findings provide insights into the understanding of crowding effects on complex coacervation, shedding light on the formation and properties of coacervates in the context of MLOs.

Effect of the Addition of Polyacrylic Acid of Different Molecular Weights to Coagulation Bath on the Structure and Performance of Polysulfone Ultrafiltration Membranes

Membrane fouling is a serious issue in membrane technology which cannot be completely avoided but can be diminished. The perspective technique of membrane modification is the introduction of hydrophilic polymers or polyelectrolytes into the coagulation bath during membrane preparation via non-solvent-induced phase separation. The influence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) molecular weight (100,000, 250,000 and 450,000 g·mol−1) added to the aqueous coagulation bath (0.4–2.0 wt.%) on the polysulfone membrane structure, surface roughness, water contact angle and zeta potential of the selective layer, as well as the separation and antifouling performance, was systematically studied. It was found that membranes obtained via the addition of PAA with higher molecular weight feature smaller pore size and porosity, extremely high hydrophilicity and higher values of negative charge of membrane surface. It was shown that the increase in PAA concentration from 0.4 wt.% to 2.0 wt.% for all studied PAA molecular weights yielded a substantial decrease in water contact angle compared with the reference membrane (65 ± 2°) (from 27 ± 2° to 17 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 100,000 g·mol−1; from 25 ± 2° to 16 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 250,000 g·mol−1; and from 19 ± 2° to 10 ± 2° for PAA with Mn = 450,000 g·mol−1). An increase in PAA molecular weight from 100,000 to 450,000 g·mol−1 led to a decrease in membrane permeability, an increase in rejection and tailoring excellent antifouling performance in the ultrafiltration of humic acid solutions. The fouling recovery ratio increased from 73% for the reference membrane up to 91%, 100% and 136% for membranes modified with the addition to the coagulation bath of 1.5 wt.% of PAA with molecular weights of 100,000 g·mol−1, 250,000 g·mol−1 and 450,000 g·mol−1, respectively. Overall, the addition of PAA of different molecular weights to the coagulation bath is an efficient tool to adjust membrane separation and antifouling properties for different separation tasks.

Study of MOF incorporated dual layer membrane with enhanced removal of ammonia and per-/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in landfill leachate treatment

Landfill leachate is a highly polluted and complex wastewater as it contains large amounts of organic matters, ammonia‑nitrogen, heavy metals, and per-/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which makes its treatment very challenging. In this paper, hydrophilic/hydrophobic dual layer membranes combining advantages of pervaporation and membrane distillation was employed to treat leachate in a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) configuration. An aluminum fumarate (AlFu) metal organic framework (MOF) incorporated poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrophilic layer was coated on hydrophobic PTFE membrane to overcome the low separation efficiency of PFAS and ammonia and wetting issues encountered by the conventional hydrophobic PTFE membrane used for DCMD. The rejections of dual layer membranes with different MOF loading to PFAS, ammonia, TOC and TDS were assessed based on the amount of AlFu MOF incorporated into the PVA layer. Based on the conducted adsorption tests, it was found that AlFu MOF increases the rejection of PVA layer to PFAS and ammonia. The coating of the hydrophilic layer could enhance the wetting resistance with/without MOF addition. In comparison with the pristine PTFE membrane using synthetic feed containing 3 wt% NaCl, 1 wt% addition of AlFu MOF into the PVA layer showed slightly increased flux. All the tested membranes showed more than 99% rejection to TOC. The rejection to ammonia was increased as more MOF was incorporated into the PVA layer. The maximum rejection of ammonia was 99.8% when the PVA layer containing 10% MOF. All the membranes showed more than 99% rejection to PFOS and PFHxS. However, PTFE membrane did not show any rejection to PFOA. As more MOF was added into the hydrophilic layer, the rejection to PFOA increased, but plateaued at 65.6% with 5% MOF incorporation into the hydrophilic layer.

Review on characteristics of biomaterial and nanomaterials based polymeric nanocomposite membranes for seawater treatment application

Membrane technology, especially nanofiltration (NF) has great attention to provide an imperative solution for water issues. The membrane is considered to be the heart in the separation plant. Understanding the membrane characteristics could allow predicting and optimizing the membrane performance namely flux, rejection and reduced fouling. The membrane development using biomaterials and nanomaterials provides a remarkable opportunity in the water application. This review focuses on the membrane characteristics of biomaterials and nanomaterials based nanofiltration. In this review, recent researches based on biomaterials and nanomaterials loaded membrane for salt rejection have been analyzed. Membrane fouling depends on the membrane characteristics and this review defined fouling as a ubiquitous bottleneck challenge that hampers the NF blooming applications. Fouling mitigation strategies via membrane modification using biomaterial (chitosan, curcumin and vanillin) and various other nanomaterials are critically reviewed. This review also highlights the membrane cleaning and focuses on concentrates disposal methods with zero liquid discharge system for resource recovery. Finally, the conclusion and future prospects of membrane technology are discussed. From this current review, it is apparent that the biomaterial and various other nanomaterials acquire exclusive properties that facilitate membrane advancement with improved capability for water treatment. Regardless of membrane material developments, still exist considerable difficulties in membrane commercialization. Thus, additional studies related to this field are needed to produce membranes with better performance for large‒scale applications.

Interfacially crosslinked composite porous membranes for ultrafast removal of anionic dyes from water through permeating adsorption

The dye wastewater is one of the most difficult industrial wastewaters to treat. It keeps a big challenge to realize fast removal of dyes from water by membrane filtration due to the trade-off between separation selectivity and permeation flux for ultrafiltration or nanofiltration (NF) process. Here we report novel composite porous membranes which can remove anionic dyes from water by ultrafast permeating adsorption. A crosslinked polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer with strong adsorption ability was incorporated onto a nylon microfiltration membrane by the interfacial amidation reaction between PEI and trimesoyl chloride. The obtained composite membranes were used for the decolorization of dye solution by permeation mode. It was shown that the composite membranes were able to nearly completely remove anionic dyes in acidic conditions with high permeation fluxes. In an optimized case, the adsorption capacity of Sunset Yellow for the composite membranes reached 0.7mg/cm² with a high flux of 85L/m²h under a ultralow pressure of 0.01bar. This flux was far much higher than that of NF membranes, about 10L/m²hbar. The pH-dependent electrostatic interaction between PEI and anionic dyes was responsible for the rapid dye removal. The adsorption saturated membranes could be effectively regenerated by a simple alkaline washing.

Fungal biomass as biosorbent for the removal of Acid Blue 161 dye in aqueous solution

Physical and thermal treatment was used to inactivate Trametes sp. SC-10 fungus. The resulting biomass was named BTV, characterized by analytical techniques such as SEM, EDX, FTIR, BET, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) model. pH, kinetic, and equilibrium adsorption studies with the Acid Blue 161 (AB-161) dye were investigated at 303.15 K. The kinetics of the biosorption process were examined at 600.00 and 1300 mg L^-1, using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Avrami fractional-order models. The maximum biosorption capacity of BTV for AB-161 dye was 221.6 mg g^-1. Considering the biosorption data and the functional groups of BTV, it can be inferred that the sorption mechanism of AB-161 is regulated by electrostatic interactions between ionized dye molecules and negative charges on BTV in an aqueous solution. Finally, the BTV was tested with a simulated effluent with 89.47% efficiency, presenting the BTV as a biosorbent for real effluents polluted with dyes.
