Self-standing nanofilms of polysulfone doped with sulfonated polysulfone via solvent evaporation for forward osmosis

A review on fabrication, characterization of membrane and the influence of various parameters on contaminant separation process

In most developing countries, the availability of drinking water is a major problem. This creates the need for treatment of wastewater, reusability of water, etc. The membrane technology has its place in the market for treating such water. This review compares polymeric membrane fabrication techniques, characteristics, and factors responsible for effective membrane separation for different materials. Although extensive knowledge is available on membrane fabrication, fabricating a membrane is still more challenging, which is more prone to antifouling properties. The competency in different fabrication methods like phase inversion, interfacial polymerization, stretching, track etching and electrospinning are elucidated in the current study. Further, the challenges and adaptability of different application fabrication methods are studied. Important surface parameters like surface wettability, roughness, surface tension, pore size, surface charge, surface functional group and pure water flux are analyzed for different polymeric membranes. In addition, the properties responsible for fouling the membrane are also covered in detail. Flow direction and velocity are the main factors that characterize a membrane's antifouling nature. Antifouling separation can still be achieved by characterizing feed properties such as pH, temperature, diffusivity, ion concentration, and surface content. Understanding fouling properties is a key to progress in membrane technology to develop an effective membrane separation.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polymeric Blends Containing Polysulfone Based on Cyclic Bisphenol

The elaboration of the composition and methods of preparation of new types of materials is an important issue from the plastics industry’s point of view. The paper presents the polysulfone synthesis based on 4,4′-cyclohexylidenebisphenol (bisphenol Z). This compound was used (in an amount of 5 or 10 wt.% sample) for the synthesis and characterization of new polymeric blends based on the two different acrylic resins (EB-150 and EB-600) and the active solvent N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP). The weight ratio of the used resin to solvent was 1:2; 1:1 or 2:1. These new materials were obtained applying the photoinitiated free radical polymerization with 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenyloacetophenone as a photoinitiator used in an amount of 1 wt.%. Six polymeric blends and six copolymers without polysulfone were cured by this method. By means of ATR/FT-IR (Attenuated Total Reflection–Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy the chemical structure of the synthesized polysulfone was proved. The effect of the presence of the polysulfone presence on the thermal properties of the obtained blends was analyzed by means of thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Moreover, the dynamic mechanical studies (DMA) of these materials were also carried out, demonstrating which of the materials showed the influence of the percentage of polysulfone on the selected properties in the blended- and parent-copolymers samples.

Prediction of the phenol removal capacity from water by adsorption on activated carbon

High-performance sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated via a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) as a crosslinker. Acid-base crosslinking occurred between the sulfonic acid groups of SPSf and the tertiary amine groups of the embedded ZIF-67, which improved the dispersion of ZIF-67 and simultaneously improved the membrane strzcture and permselectivity. The dispersion of ZIF-67 in the MMMs and the acid-base crosslinking reaction were verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The pore structure analysis of MMMs indicated that filling ZIF-67 into SPSf enhanced the average surface pore sizes, surface porosities and more micropore in cross-sections. The crossflow filtrations showed the MMMs have higher pure water fluxes (57 to 111 L m^-2 h^-1) than the SPSf membrane (55 L m^-2 h^-1) but also higher bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate of 93.9-95.8%, a model protein foulant. The MMMs showed a higher water contact angle than the SPSf membrane due to the addition of hydrophobic ZIF-67 and acid-base crosslinking, and also maintained high thermal stability evidenced by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results. At the optimal ZIF-67 concentration of 0.3 wt%, the water flux of the SPSf-Z67-0.3 membrane was 82 L m^-2 h^-1 with a high BSA rejection rate of 95.3% at 0.1 MPa and better antifouling performance (FRR = 70%).

Metal-Organic Framework Nanocomposite Thin Films with Interfacial Bindings and Self-Standing Robustness for High Water Flux and Enhanced Ion Selectivity

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials are promising candidates for a range of separation applications. However, the fabrication of self-standing MOF-based thin films remains challenging. Herein, a facile solution casting strategy is developed for fabricating UiO-66 nanocomposite thin films (UiO66TFs) with thicknesses down to ∼400 nm. Nanosizing UiO-66 and incorporating sulfonated polysulfone additives render high dispersity and interfacial bindings between MOFs and polymer matrices, so UiO66TFs are more mechanically robust and thermally stable than their pure-polymer counterparts. Enhanced microporosity with sub-nanometer pore sizes of the self-standing membranes enables the direct translation of UiO-66-based sorption and ion-sieving properties, thus increasing water flux and separation performance (Na₂SO₄ rejection of 94-96%) under hydraulic pressure-driven processes and eliminating internal concentration polarization in osmotic pressure-driven processes. Enhanced separation performances are achieved with water/Na₂SO₄ permselectivity of 13.5 L g^-1 and high osmotic water permeability up to 1.41 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1, providing 3-fold higher water/Na₂SO₄ permselectivity and 56-fold-higher water flux than polymer membranes for forward osmosis.
