Poly (aryl ether ketone)/polymeric ionic liquid with anisotropic swelling behavior for anion exchange membranes

Semi-Interpenetrating Network Anion Exchange Membranes by Thiol-Ene Coupling Reaction for Alkaline Fuel Cells and Water Electrolyzers

In this work, a thiol-ene coupling reaction was employed to prepare the semi-interpenetrating polymer network AEMs. The obtained QP-1/2 membrane exhibits high hydroxide conductivity (162.5 mS cm^-1 at 80 °C) with a relatively lower swelling ratio, demonstrating its mechanical strength of 42 MPa. This membrane is noteworthy for its improved alkaline stability, as the semi-interpenetrating network effectively limits the attack of hydroxide. Even after being treated in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 600 h, 82.5% of the hydroxide conductivity is maintained. The H₂/O₂ fuel cell with QP-1/2 membrane displays a peak power density of 521 mW cm^-2. Alkaline water electrolyzers based on QP-1/2 membrane demonstrated a current density of 1460 mA cm^-2 at a cell voltage of 2.00 V using NiCoFe catalysts in the anode. All the results demonstrate that a semi-interpenetrating structure is a promising way to enhance the mechanical property, ionic conductivity, and alkaline stability of AEMs for the application of alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Physical and chemical properties of binary mixtures of dibutylammonium-based ionic liquids and water

Ionic liquids are used in different processes owing to their low vapor pressure, large viscosity range, chemical and thermal stability, and superior conductance even without water. These features make them flexible and tunable, indicating their possible use as substitutes for commonly used compounds in many processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of aqueous binary solutions for three different ionic liquids (ILs): dibutylammonium acetate, dibutylammonium propanoate, and dibutylammonium butanoate. The measured properties were density, speed of sound, and conductivity, and their isentropic compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated based on these properties. The temperature range used for measurements was 293.15–323.15 K. Mathematical models were used for each ionic liquid + water mixture to fit the density and speed of sound data. The increase in the alkyl chain leads to a tendency to decrease the values of density, speed of sound, and conductivity of the solutions. However, decreasing the dilution in water, the density, the conductivity and the speed of sound initially increase and then decrease, exhibiting a maximum in the initial water concentration range which indicates the formation of aggregates. Critical micellar concentrations at 298 K were determined through conductivity data. Enhancing the temperature leads to a decrease on density and sound velocity.

Synergistic impacts of Cu2+ on simultaneous removal of tetracycline and tetracycline resistance genes by PSF/TPU/UiO forward osmosis membrane

Cu²⁺, tetracycline (TC), and corresponding tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs) are common micropollutants in aquaculture wastewater, which have great impact on environment and human health. In this study, we developed a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) forward osmosis (FO) membrane with an electrospinning thermoplastic polyurethane/polysulfone (PSF/TPU) substrate and a UiO-66-NH₂ particle interlayer modified active layer. The effects of Cu²⁺ concentration on the synergetic removal of TC and TRGs (e.g., tetA/M/X/O/C, int1, and 16 S rRNA gene) were analyzed to determine the role of Cu²⁺ in FO process. The rejection mechanism was also analyzed in depth. Results demonstrated that the rejection of TC and Cu²⁺ was 99.53% and 97.99%. The rejection of TRGs exceeded 90% (specifically, over 99% for tetC) at a Cu²⁺ concentration of 500 μg/L when 0.5 M (NH₄)₂HPO₄ was used as draw solution. Complexation reaction between Cu²⁺ and TC, electrostatic interaction, and the adsorption of Cu²⁺ on membrane surface were the main contributing factors for the high rejection efficiencies. Altogether, the as-prepared FO membrane holds great potential for simultaneously removing heavy metals, antibiotics, and resistance genes in real wastewater.
