Interlayer Polymerization to Construct a Fully Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework as a Metal-Free Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have a multilayer skeleton with a periodic π-conjugated molecular array, which can facilitate charge carrier transport within a COF layer. However, the lack of an effective charge carrier transmission pathway between 2D COF layers greatly limits their applications in electrocatalysis. Herein, by employing a side-chain polymerization strategy to form polythiophene along the nanochannels, a conjugated bridge is constructed between the COF layers. The as-synthesized fully conjugated COF (PTh-COF) exhibits high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with narrowed energy band gaps. Correspondingly, PTh-COF is tested as a metal-free cathode catalyst for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) which showed a maximum power density of 176 mW cm-2 under a current density of 533 mA cm-2. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that interlayer conjugated polythiophene optimizes the electron cloud distribution, which therefore enhances the ORR performance. This work not only provides new insight into the construction of a fully conjugated covalent organic framework but also promotes the development of new metal-free ORR catalysts.

High-Toughness and High-Strength Solvent-Free Linear Poly(ionic liquid) Elastomers

Solvent-free elastomers, unlike gels, do not suffer from solvent evaporation and leakage in practical applications. However, it is challenging to realize the preparation of high-toughness (with both high stress and strain) ionic elastomers. Herein, high-toughness linear poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) elastomers are constructed via supramolecular ionic networks formed by the polymerization of halometallate ionic liquid (IL) monomers, without any chemical crosslinking. The obtained linear PIL elastomers exhibit high strength (16.5 MPa), Young's modulus (157.49 MPa), toughness (130.31 MJ m-3 ), and high crack propagation insensitivity (fracture energy 243.37 kJ m-2 ), owing to the enhanced intermolecular noncovalent interactions of PIL chains. Furthermore, PIL elastomer-based strain, pressure, and touch sensors have shown high sensitivity. The linear noncovalent crosslinked network endows the PIL elastomers with self-healing and recyclable properties, and broad application prospects in the fields of flexible sensor devices, health monitoring, and human-machine interaction.

[The cases of tracing the source of patients infected with Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 based on wastewater-based epidemiology in Shenzhen]

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is an emerging discipline, which has been applied to drug abuse tracking and infectious disease pathogen surveillance. During the COVID-19 epidemic, WBE has been applied to monitor the epidemic trend and SARS-CoV-2 variants etc. In order to detect hidden COVID-19 cases and prevent transmission in the community, wastewater surveillance system for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 RNA was developed in Shenzhen. The sewage sampling sites were set up in key places such as the port areas, urban villages and residential communities of Futian, Nanshan, Luohu and Yantian districts. From July 26 to November 30, 2022, a total of 369 sewage sampling sites were set up, covering 1.93 million people. Continuous sampling was carried out for 3 hours in the peak period of water use every day. Sewage virus enrichment and SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid detection were carried out by polyethylene glycol precipitation method and RT-qPCR, and a positive water sample disposal process was molded. This article aims to introduce the case of source tracing of COVID-19 infected patients based on urban sewage in Shenzhen. The sewage monitoring of Honghu water treatment plant in Luohu District played an early warning role, and the source of infection was traced. In the disposal of positive water samples in Futian South Road, Futian District, the important experience of monitoring point layout was obtained. In the sewage monitoring of Nanshan village, Nanshan District, the existence of occult infection was revealed. Sharing the experience of tracing the source of COVID-19 patients to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in the community based on wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in Shenzhen, and summarizing the advantages and application prospects of sewage surveillance can provide new ideas for monitoring emerging or re-emerging pathogens that are known to exhibit gastrointestinal excretion in the future.

Regulation of Hydrophobic Structures of Antibacterial Guanidinium-Based Amphiphilic Polymers for Subcutaneous Implant Applications

Antimicrobial peptide mimics have been used to kill bacteria and construct antibacterial materials. Precise design and construction of chemical structure are essential for easy access to highly effective antimicrobial peptide mimics. Herein, cationic guanidinium-based polymers (PGXs) with varying hydrophobic structures were synthesized to explore the structure and antibacterial activity relationship of antimicrobial peptide mimics and to construct antibacterial implants. The effect of the hydrophobic chemical structure, including carbon chain length and configuration, on the antimicrobial activities against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The antibacterial activities of PGXs improved with increasing alkyl chain length, and PGXs with a straight-chain hydrophobic structure exhibited better bactericidal activities than those with cyclic alkane and aromatic hydrocarbon. Furthermore, PGXs grafted with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS-PGXs) showed a similar bactericidal change tendency of PGXs in solution. Additionally, the PDMS-PGXs showed potent antibiofilm performance in vitro, which can inhibit bacterial infection in vivo as subcutaneous implants. This study may propose a basis for the precise design and construction of antibacterial materials and provide a promising way of designing biomedical devices and implants with bacterial infection-combating activities.

Nanoconfined polymerization limits crack propagation in hysteresis-free gels

Consecutive mechanical loading cycles cause irreversible fatigue damage and residual strain in gels, affecting their service life and application scope. Hysteresis-free hydrogels within a limited deformation range have been created by various strategies. However, large deformation and high elasticity are inherently contradictory attributes. Here we present a nanoconfined polymerization strategy for producing tough and near-zero-hysteresis gels under a large range of deformations. Gels are prepared through in situ polymerization within nanochannels of covalent organic frameworks or molecular sieves. The nanochannel confinement and strong hydrogen bonding interactions with polymer segments are crucial for achieving rapid self-reinforcement. The rigid nanostructures relieve the stress concentration at the crack tips and prevent crack propagation, enhancing the ultimate fracture strain (17,580 ± 308%), toughness (87.7 ± 2.3 MJ m-3) and crack propagation strain (5,800%) of the gels. This approach provides a general strategy for synthesizing gels that overcome the traditional trade-offs of large deformation and high elasticity.

[Analysis on the secondary attack rates of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and the associated factors]

Objective: To evaluate the secondary attack rates of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and the associated factors. Methods: A total of 328 primary cases and 40 146 close contacts of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant routinely detected in local areas of Jiangsu Province from February to April 2022 were selected in this study, and those with positive nucleic acid test results during 7 days of centralized isolation medical observation were defined as secondary cases. The demographic information and clinical characteristics were collected, and the secondary attack rate (SAR) and the associated factors were analyzed by using a multivariate logistic regression model. Results: A total of 1 285 secondary cases of close contacts were reported from 328 primary cases, with a SAR of 3.2% (95%CI: 3.0%-3.4%). Among the 328 primary cases, males accounted for 61.9% (203 cases), with the median age (Q1, Q3) of 38.5 (27, 51) years old. Among the 1 285 secondary cases, males accounted for 59.1% (759 cases), with the median age (Q1, Q3) of 34 (17, 52) years old. The multivariate logistic regression model showed that the higher SAR was observed in the primary male cases (OR=1.632, 95%CI: 1.418-1.877), younger than 20 years old (OR=1.766, 95%CI: 1.506-2.072),≥60 years old (OR=1.869, 95%CI: 1.476-2.365), infected with the BA.2 strain branch (OR=2.906, 95%CI: 2.388-3.537), the confirmed common cases (OR=2.572, 95%CI: 2.036-3.249), and confirmed mild cases (OR=1.717, 95%CI: 1.486-1.985). Meanwhile, the higher SAR was observed in the close contacts younger than 20 years old (OR=2.604, 95%CI: 2.250-3.015),≥60 years old (OR=1.287, 95%CI: 1.052-1.573) and exposure for co-residence (OR=27.854, 95%CI: 23.470-33.057). Conclusion: The sex and age of the primary case of the Omicron variant, the branch of the infected strain, case severity of the primary case, as well as the age and contact mode of close contacts are the associated factors of SAR.

Semi-Interpenetrating Network Anion Exchange Membranes by Thiol-Ene Coupling Reaction for Alkaline Fuel Cells and Water Electrolyzers

In this work, a thiol-ene coupling reaction was employed to prepare the semi-interpenetrating polymer network AEMs. The obtained QP-1/2 membrane exhibits high hydroxide conductivity (162.5 mS cm^-1 at 80 °C) with a relatively lower swelling ratio, demonstrating its mechanical strength of 42 MPa. This membrane is noteworthy for its improved alkaline stability, as the semi-interpenetrating network effectively limits the attack of hydroxide. Even after being treated in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 600 h, 82.5% of the hydroxide conductivity is maintained. The H₂/O₂ fuel cell with QP-1/2 membrane displays a peak power density of 521 mW cm^-2. Alkaline water electrolyzers based on QP-1/2 membrane demonstrated a current density of 1460 mA cm^-2 at a cell voltage of 2.00 V using NiCoFe catalysts in the anode. All the results demonstrate that a semi-interpenetrating structure is a promising way to enhance the mechanical property, ionic conductivity, and alkaline stability of AEMs for the application of alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

[Prediction of 1p/19q codeletion status in diffuse lower-grade glioma using multimodal MRI radiomics]

OBJECTIVE

To develop a noninvasive method for prediction of 1p/19q codeletion in diffuse lower-grade glioma (DLGG) based on multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics.

METHODS

We collected MRI data from 104 patients with pathologically confirmed DLGG between October, 2015 and September, 2022. A total of 535 radiomics features were extracted from T₂WI, T₁WI, FLAIR, CE-T₁WI and DWI, including 70 morphological features, 90 first order features, and 375 texture features. We constructed logistic regression (LR), logistic regression least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LRlasso), support vector machine (SVM) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) radiomics models and compared their predictive performance after 10-fold cross validation. The MRI images were reviewed by two radiologists independently for predicting the 1p/19q status. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate classification performance of the radiomics models and the radiologists.

RESULTS

The 4 radiomics models (LR, LRlasso, SVM and LDA) achieved similar area under the curve (AUC) in the validation dataset (0.833, 0.819, 0.824 and 0.819, respectively; P>0.1), and their predictive performance was all superior to that of resident physicians of radiology (AUC=0.645, P=0.011, 0.022, 0.016, 0.030, respectively) and similar to that of attending physicians of radiology (AUC=0.838, P>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Multiparametric MRI radiomics models show good performance for noninvasive prediction of 1p/19q codeletion status in patients with in diffuse lower-grade glioma.

[Preliminary experience of gasless transoral vestibular robotic thyroidectomy]

Objective: To explore the feasibility and safety of the gasless transoral vestibular robotic thyroidectomy using skin suspension. Methods: The clinical data of 20 patients underwent gasless transoral vestibular robotic thyroidectomy in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University from February 2022 to May 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 18 were females and 2 were males, aged (38.7±8.0) years old. The intraoperative blood loss, operation time, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative drainage volume, postoperative pain visual analogue scale (VAS) score, postoperative swallowing function swallowing impairment score-6 (SIS-6), postoperative aesthetic VAS score, postoperative voice handicap index-10 (VHI-10) voice quality, postoperative pathology and complications were recorded. SPSS 25.0 was used for statistical analysis of the data. Results: The operations were successfully completed without conversion to open surgery in all patients. Pathological examination showed papillary thyroid carcinoma in 18 cases, retrosternal nodular goiter in 1 case, and cystic change in goiter in 1 case. The operative time for thyroid cancer was 161.50 (152.75, 182.50) min [M (P₂₅, P₇₅), the same below] and the average operative time for benign thyroid diseases was 166.50 minutes. The intraoperative blood loss 25.00 (21.25, 30.00) ml. In 18 cases of thyroid cancer, the mean diameter of the tumors was (7.22±2.02) mm, and lymph nodes (6.56±2.14) were dissected in the central region, with a lymph node metastasis rate of 61.11%. The postoperative pain VAS score was 3.00 (2.25, 4.00) points at 24 hours, the mean postoperative drainage volume was (118.35±24.32) ml, the postoperative hospital stay was 3.00 (3.00, 3.75) days, the postoperative SIS-6 score was (4.90±1.58) points at 3 months, and the postoperative VHI-10 score was 7.50 (2.00, 11.00) points at 3 months. Seven patients had mild mandibular numbness, 10 patients had mild cervical numbness, and 3 patients had temporary hypothyroidism three months after surgery and 1 patient had skin flap burn, but recovered one month after surgery. All patients were satisfied with the postoperative aesthetic effects, and the postoperative aesthetic VAS score was 10.00 (10.00, 10.00). Conclusion: Gasless transoral vestibular robotic thyroidectomy using skin suspension is a safe and feasible option with good postoperative aesthetic effect, which can provide a new treatment option for some selected patients with thyroid tumors.

Nitric oxide-releasing poly(ionic liquid)-based microneedle for subcutaneous fungal infection treatment

Poor permeation of therapeutic agents and similar eukaryotic cell metabolic and physiological properties of fungi and human cells are two major challenges that lead to the failure of current therapy for fungi-induced skin and soft tissue infections. Herein, a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing poly(ionic liquid)-based microneedle (PILMN-NO) with the capacity of deep persistent NO toward subcutaneous fungal bed is presented as a synergistic antifungal treatment strategy to treat subcutaneous fungal infection. Upon the insertion of PILMN-NO into skin, the contact fungicidal activities induced by electrostatic and hydrophobic effects of poly(ionic liquid) and the released NO sterilization resulting from the peroxidation and nitrification effect of NO achieved enhanced antifungal efficacy against fungi (Candida albicans) both in vitro and in vivo. Simultaneously, PILMN-NO showed biofilm ablation ability and efficiently eliminated mature biofilms. In vivo fungal-induced subcutaneous abscess studies revealed that PILMN-NO could effectively sterilize fungi while suppressing the inflammatory reaction, facilitating collagen deposition and angiogenesis, and promoting wound healing. This work provides a new strategy to overcome the difficulties in deep skin fungal infection treatment and has potential for further exploitation of NO-releasing microbicidal therapy.

Unsupervised Learning-Guided Accelerated Discovery of Alkaline Anion Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cells

Without insight into the correlation between the structure and properties, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for fuel cells are developed usually using the empirical trial and error method or simulation methods. Here, a virtual module compound enumeration screening (V-MCES) approach, which does not require the establishment of expensive training databases and can search the chemical space containing more than 4.2×105 candidates was proposed. The accuracy of the V-MCES model was considerably improved when the model was combined with supervised learning for the feature selection of molecular descriptors. Techniques from V-MCES, correlating the molecular structures of the AEMs with the predicted chemical stability, generated a ranking list of potential high stability AEMs. Under the guidance of V-MCES, highly stable AEMs were synthesized. With understanding of AEM structure and performance by machine learning, AEM science may enter a new era of unprecedented levels of architectural design.

[Epidemiological characteristics of a 2019-nCoV outbreak caused by Omicron variant BF.7 in Shenzhen]

Objective: To explore the epidemiological characteristic of a COVID-19 outbreak caused by 2019-nCoV Omicron variant BF.7 and other provinces imported in Shenzhen and analyze transmission chains and characteristics. Methods: Field epidemiological survey was conducted to identify the transmission chain, analyze the generation relationship among the cases. The 2019-nCoV nucleic acid positive samples were used for gene sequencing. Results: From 8 to 23 October, 2022, a total of 196 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Shenzhen, all the cases had epidemiological links. In the cases, 100 were men and 96 were women, with a median of age, M (Q₁, Q₃) was 33(25, 46) years. The outbreak was caused by traverlers initial cases infected with 2019-nCoV who returned to Shenzhen after traveling outside of Guangdong Province.There were four transmission chains, including the transmission in place of residence and neighbourhood, affecting 8 persons, transmission in social activity in the evening on 7 October, affecting 65 persons, transmission in work place on 8 October, affecting 48 persons, and transmission in a building near the work place, affecting 74 persons. The median of the incubation period of the infection, M (Q₁, Q₃) was 1.44 (1.11, 2.17) days. The incubation period of indoor exposure less than that of the outdoor exposure, M (Q₁, Q₃) was 1.38 (1.06, 1.84) and 1.95 (1.22, 2.99) days, respcetively (Wald χ²=10.27, P=0.001). With the increase of case generation, the number and probability of gene mutation increased. In the same transmission chain, the proportion of having 1-3 mutation sites was high in the cases in the first generation. Conclusions: The transmission chains were clear in this epidemic. The incubation period of Omicron variant BF.7 infection was shorter, the transmission speed was faster, and the gene mutation rate was higher. It is necessary to conduct prompt response and strict disease control when epidemic occurs.

Radiomics signature based on CECT for non-invasive prediction of response to anti-PD-1 therapy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

PURPOSE

This study aimed to develop a radiomics signature (RS) based on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and evaluate its potential predictive value in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients receiving anti-PD-1 therapy.

METHOD

CECT scans of 76 HCC patients who received anti-PD-1 therapy were obtained in this study (training group = 53 and validation group = 23). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was applied to select radiomics features of primary and metastatic lesions and establish a RS to predict lesion-level response. Then, a nomogram combined the mean RS (MRS) and clinical variables with patient-level response as the end point.

RESULTS

In the lesion-level analysis, the area under the curves (AUCs) of RS in the training and validation groups were 0.751 (95% CI, 0.668-0.835) and 0.734 (95% CI, 0.604-0.864), respectively. In the patient-level analysis, the AUCs of the nomogram in the training and validation groups were 0.897 (95% CI, 0.798-0.996) and 0.889 (95% CI, 0.748-1.000), respectively. The nomogram stratified patients into low- and high-risk groups, which showed a significant difference in progression-free survival (PFS) (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The RS is a noninvasive biomarker for predicting anti-PD-1 therapy response in patients with HCC. The nomogram may be of clinical use for identifying high-risk patients and formulating individualised treatments.

Stent pretreatment for internal carotid artery exposed to necrotic lesions in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Post radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) invading the internal carotid artery (ICA) contributes to the death of 69.2-72.7% of PRNN patients. ICA occlusion is an effective treatment to avoid fatal bleeding, while some patients are intolerant. We present a novel method that allows for these patients without interrupting blood flow through the ICA.

METHODOLOGY

This study enrolled patients with PRNN-invaded ICA who were not suitable for ICA occlusion from April 2020 to November 2022. ICA stent pretreatment was performed in the 36 patients and followed the endoscopic nasopharyngectomy (ENPG) or conservative treatment for PRNN. We report the survival outcome and incidence of complications after stent implantation and compare the survival outcomes of ENPG and conservative treatment for PRNN followed by stent implantation.

RESULTS

ICA stent pretreatment was performed in the 36 enrolled patients, among which 14 underwent ENPG, and 22 received conservative treatment. 27.8% patients died after a median follow-up of 15 months. The Kaplan-Meier estimates of overall survival were higher in the ENPG group than in the conservative treatment group. Karnofsky performance status (KPS) was significantly higher in the ENPG group than in the non-ENPG group.

CONCLUSIONS

The innovative application of ICA stents is a promising treatment to improve outcomes in patients with PRNN invading the ICA who are unsuitable for ICA embolization, especially when followed by endoscopic surgery. However, methods to avoid postoperative cerebral ischemia and nasopharyngeal hemorrhage still require further study.

Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity and Cognitive Function in Older Adults in the United States: The NHANES 2011-2014

OBJECTIVES

Oxidative stress level takes part in the development of cognitive decline. However, the association between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) from diet and cognitive function is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TAC and the cognitive function of older adults in the U.S.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys database.

PARTICIPANTS

2712 older adults aged over 60 years.

MEASUREMENTS

TAC was calculated from 8 antioxidative vitamins based on the reference values for vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity obtained from individuals' 24 h dietary recall. Four memory-related assessments were employed [Immediate Recall test (IRT), Delayed Recall test (DRT), Animal Fluency test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution test (DSST)].

RESULTS

Among the 2712 participants, the median age was 68 years, and 50.4% were women. Participants in the group with higher TAC levels had relatively higher IRT, AFT and DSST scores (P=0.025, P=0.008, P<0.001, respectively). In adjusted weighted linear regression, log-transformed TAC was positively associated with AFT (β=1.10, 95%CI: 0.51, 1.70) and DSST (β=2.81, 95%CI: 1.16, 4.45). Compared with the first quartile, the participants in the second (Q2 vs. Q1, OR=0.66, 95%CI: 0.43,1.02) and fourth quartile (Q4 vs. Q1, OR=0.47, 95%CI:0.28, 0.78) of log-transformed TAC showed a decreased risk of impaired cognitive function (ICF) after adjusting for confounders. The dose-response analysis indicated a gradual descent in the risk of ICF as TAC increases. Diabetes mellitus (DM) mediated part of the effect of TAC on ICF. The relationship between TAC and ICF was more pronounced in subjects with DM (Q4 vs Q1, OR=0.36, 95%CI:0.17, 0.74).

CONCLUSION

Our findings support that higher dietary antioxidant potential was related to a decreased risk of cognitive dysfunction, particularly in the subjects with DM who may have oxidative injury. DM was one of the factors mediating the effect of TAC on ICF.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) facilitated highly stretchable and fatigue-resistant ionogels for recyclable sensors

Ionogel-based flexible sensors are widely applied in wearable biomedical devices and soft robots. However, the abandoned ionic sensors are rapidly turning into e-waste. Here, we harness the porosity and the coordination of metal sites of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to develop physically crosslinked ionogels, which are composed of polymer chains that coordinate with the MOF metal sites. The covalent crosslinking of the host material transformed into reversible bond interactions that significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the MOF-ionogels. The obtained ionogels can endure an 11 000% stretch and exhibit Young's modulus and toughness of 58 MPa and 25 MJ m^-3, respectively. In addition, the fracture energy is as high as 125 kJ m^-2, outperforming most reported ionogels. Furthermore, the UiO-66-ionogels are fully recyclable and both the mechanical and electrical properties can be restored. The results of this work provide a new vision for the development of future "green" sensors.

Ionic Liquid-Type Additive for Lithium Metal Batteries Operated in LiPF6 Based-Electrolyte Containing 2500 ppm H2O

The presence of trace amounts of moisture in the electrolyte can cause hydrolysis of LiPF₆ and deteriorate the stability of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we propose a multifunctional ionic liquid-type additive constituting a 1-methyl-1-butyl pyrrolidium cation (Py₁₄⁺) and an acetate anion (CH₃COO^-) (denoted as IL-AC in this study), which can effectively adsorb the trace moisture and thus prevent the hydrolysis of LiPF₆ via intermolecular interactions. The prepared IL-AC can also remove HF to suppress the dissolution of transition metal ions from cathode materials through the reaction CH₃COO^- + HF → CH₃COOH + F^-. Compared with the baseline electrolyte, the contents of HF and transition metal ions are significantly lower in the electrolyte with 0.5% IL-AC. Upon the addition of 0.5% IL-AC additive and 2500 ppm H₂O, the Li||NCM811 battery shows a capacity of 153.7 mAh g^-1 after 300 cycles, while the Li||LNMO battery possesses stable capacity retention of 93.22% after 500 cycles at 1C and a Coulombic efficiency greater than 99%. Thus, this work provides a convenient and effective method to absorb trace amounts of water and remove HF in the electrolyte and provides a new path for the expensive and tedious process of water removal from the electrolyte in industry.

Recyclable, Healable, and Tough Ionogels Insensitive to Crack Propagation

Most gels and elastomers introduce sacrificial bonds in the covalent network to dissipate energy. However, long-term cyclic loading caused irreversible fatigue damage and crack propagation cannot be prevented. Furthermore, because of the irreversible covalent crosslinked networks, it is a huge challenge to implement reversible mechanical interlocking and reorganize the polymer segments to realize the recycling and reuse of ionogels. Here, covalent crosslinking of host materials is replaced with entanglement. The entangled microdomains are used as physical crosslinking while introducing reversible bond interactions. The interpenetrating, entangled, and elastic microdomains of linear segments and covalent-network microspheres provide mechanical stability, eliminate stress concentration at the crack tip under load, and achieve unprecedented tear and fatigue resistance of ionogels in any load direction. Moreover, reversible entanglements and noncovalent interactions can be disentangled and recombined to achieve recycling and mechanical regeneration, and the recyclability of covalent-network microdomains is realized.

Enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of acridinium-grafted g-C3N4 with broad-spectrum light absorption for antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy

As a metal-free polymeric photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has attracted great attention owing to its high stability and low toxicity. However, g-C₃N₄ suffers from low light harvesting ability which limits its applications in antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy (APCT). Herein, acridinium (ADN)-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) nanosheets are prepared via covalent grafting of ADN to g-C₃N₄. The obtained ADN@g-C₃N₄ exhibits a narrow optical band gap (2.12 eV) and a wide optical absorption spectrum (intensity a.u. > 0.30) ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared region. Moreover, ADN@g-C₃N₄ would produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation to exert effective sterilization and biofilm elimination activities against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Molecular dynamics simulation reveals that the ADN@g-C₃N₄ may move toward, tile and insert the bacterial lipid bilayer membrane through strong van der Waals and electrostatic interaction, decreasing the order parameter of the lipid while increasing the conducive of ROS migration, inducing ADN@g-C₃N₄ with improved antimicrobial and antibiofilm performance. Moreover, ADN@g-C₃N₄ could efficiently eradicate oral biofilm on artificial teeth surfaces. This work may provide a broad-spectrum light-induced photocatalytic therapy for preventing and treating dental plaque diseases and artificial teeth-related infections, showing potential applications for intractable biofilm treatment applications. An acridinium-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) with a narrow band gap and broad-spectrum light absorption was synthesized. The narrow optical band gap and improved electrostatic interaction with bacterial lipid bilayer membrane of ADN@g-C₃N₄ strengthened the ROS generation and facilitated the diffusion of ROS to bacteria surface, leading to enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity against bacteria and corresponding biofilm under light irradiation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: An acridinium-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) with a narrow band gap and broad-spectrum light absorption was developed as an antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy agent. The ADN@g-C₃N₄ exhibited enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity against bacteria and corresponding biofilm under light irradiation, showing potential applications for intractable biofilm treatment.

Development of a wide-range soft sensor for predicting wastewater BOD5 using an eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) machine

In wastewater monitoring, detecting extremely high pollutant concentrations is necessary to properly calibrate the treatment process. However, existing hardware sensors have a limited linear range which may fail to measure extremely high levels of pollutants; and likewise, the conventional "soft" model sensors are not suitable for the highly-skewed data distributions either. This study developed a new soft sensor by using eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning to 'measure' the wastewater organics (in terms of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5)). The soft sensor was tested on influent and effluent BOD5 of two different wastewater treatment plants to validate the results. The model results showed that XGBoost can detect these extreme values better than conventional soft sensors. This new soft sensor can function using a sparse input matrix via XGBoost's sparsity awareness algorithm - which can address the limitation of the conventional soft sensor with the fallibility of supporting hardware sensors even.

Moisture-Wicking, Breathable, and Intrinsically Antibacterial Electronic Skin Based on Dual-Gradient Poly(ionic liquid) Nanofiber Membranes

Electronic skin can detect minute electrical potential changes in the human skin and represent the body's state, which is critical for medical diagnostics and human-computer interface development. On the other hand, sweat has a significant effect on the signal stability, comfort, and safety of electronic skin in a real-world application. In this study, by modifying the cation and anion of a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and employing a spinning process, a PIL-based multilayer nanofiber membrane (PIL membrane) electronic skin with a dual gradient is created. The PIL electronic skin is moisture-wicking and breathable due to the hydrophilicity and pore size-gradients. The intrinsically antimicrobial activities of PILs allow the safe collection of bioelectrical signals from the human body, such as electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG). In addition, a robotic hand may be operated in real-time, and a preliminary human-computer interface can be accomplished by simple processing of the collected EMG signal. This study establishes a novel practical approach for monitoring and using bioelectrical signals in real-world circumstances via the multifunctional electronic skin.

Acridine-Based Covalent Organic Framework Photosensitizer with Broad-Spectrum Light Absorption for Antibacterial Photocatalytic Therapy

Antibiotic resistance is considered as one of the serious public health issues. Antibacterial photocatalytic therapy, a clinically proven antibacterial therapy, is gaining increasing attention in recent years owing to its high efficacy. Here, an acridine-based covalent organic framework (COF) photosensitizer, named TPDA, with multiple active sites is synthesized via Schiff base condensation between 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 3,6-diaminoacridine (DAA). Owing to the increased conjugation effect of the COF skeleton and outstanding light harvesting ability of DAA, TPDA exhibits a narrow optical band gap (1.6 eV), enhancing light energy transformation and conferring a wide optical absorption spectrum (intensity arbitrary unit > 0.8) ranging from the UV to near-infrared region. Moreover, TPDA shows high antibacterial activities against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria within a short time (10 min) of light irradiation and is found to efficiently protect fish from skin infections. Molecular dynamics simulation data show that the introduction of DAA and TFP facilitates the interaction between TPDA and bacteria and is conducive to reactive oxygen species migration, which further improves the antimicrobial performance. These findings indicate the potential of TPDA as a novel photosensitive material for photodynamic therapy.

A Superstrong and Reversible Ionic Crystal-Based Adhesive Inspired by Ice Adhesion

In this study, we developed a superstrong and reversible adhesive, which can possess a high bonding strength in the "adhesive" state and detach with the application of heating. An ionic crystal (IC) gel, in which an IC was immobilized within a soft-polymer matrix, were synthesized via in situ photo-crosslinking of a precursor solution composed of N, N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAA) and a melted IC. The obtained IC gel is homogenous and transparent at melt point. When cooled to the phase transition temperature of the IC, the gel turns into the adhesive with the adhesion strength of 5.82 MPa (on glasses), due to the excellent wetting of melted gel and a thin layer of crystalline IC with high cohesive strength formed on the substrates. The synergistic effects between IC, polymer networks and substrates were investigated by solid state ¹ H NMR and molecular dynamics simulation. Such an adhesive layer is reversable and can be detached by heating and subsequent re-adhesion via cooling. This study proposed the new design of removable adhesives, which can be used in dynamic and complex environments.
