Modelling of anion-exchange membrane transport properties with taking into account the change in exchange capacity and swelling when varying bathing solution concentration and pH

A dual-recognition strategy based on pH-responsive molecularly imprinted membrane for highly selective capture of catecholamines: From construction to practical application

BACKGROUND

Catecholamines (CAs) are involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes in the body and are progressively being used as important biomarkers for a variety of diseases. It is of great significance for accurate quantification of CAs to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, the separation of CAs from complex biological matrices is still a great challenge due to the trace levels of CAs and the limited selectivity of existing pretreatment methods.

RESULTS

In this work, a dual-recognition imprinted membrane (BA-MIM) was developed to utilize the synergistic action of pH-responsive boron affinity and molecular imprinted cavities for highly selective capture and release of CAs. The prepared BA-MIM possessed remarkable adsorption capacity (maximum capacity, 43.3 mg g-1), desirable surface hydrophilicity (46.2°), superior selectivity (IF = 6.2, α = 14.3), as well as favorable reusability (number of cycles, 6 times). On this basis, an integrated analytical method based on BA-MIM extraction combined with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was innovatively developed to highly selective separation, enrichment, and detection of CAs in rat brain tissue. Under the optimum conditions, a low quantitation limits (0.05-0.10 ng mL-1), wide linear range (10-1000 ng mL-1), good linearity (r2 > 0.99), and satisfactory recoveries (88.5%-98.5 %) were obtained for CAs. The proven method was further applied to kidney-yang-deficiency-syndrome (KYDS) group rat model, revealed the intrinsic connection between kidney disease and catecholamine metabolism.

SIGNIFICANCE

This work provides an excellent reference paradigm for the effective construction of dual-recognition functional membrane material to the high-selective analysis of trace targets in complex matrices. Additionally, this integrated analytical strategy demonstrates its efficiency, sustainability, versatility, and convenience, showing remarkable prospect in a variety of applications for biological sample analysis.

Design and characterization of an electrochemically-modulated membrane chromatography device

Membrane separations offer a compelling alternative to traditional chromatographic methods by overcoming mass transport limitations. We introduce an additional degree of freedom in modulating membrane chromatography by using metalized membranes in a potential-driven process. Investigating the impact of a gold coating on membrane characteristics, the sputtered gold layer enhances the surface conductivity with stable electrochemical behavior. However, this comes at the expense of reduced permeability, wettability, and static binding capacity (∼ 474 µg g-1 of maleic acid). The designed device displayed a homogenous flow distribution, and the membrane electrodes exhibit predominantly capacitive behavior during potential application. Modulating the electrical potential during the adsorption and desorption phase strongly influenced the binding and elution behavior of anion-exchange membranes. Switching potentials between ±1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl induces desorption, confirming the process principle. Elution efficiency reaches up to 58 % at -1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl in the desorption phase without any alteration of the mobile phase. Increasing the potential perturbation ranging from +1.0 V to -1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl resulted in reduced peak width and improved elution behavior, demonstrating the feasibility of electrochemically-modulated membrane chromatography. The developed process has great potential as a gentle and sustainable separation step in the biotechnological and chemical industry.

Research on Membranes and Their Associated Processes at the Université Paris-Est Créteil: Progress Report, Perspectives, and National and International Collaborations

Research on membranes and their associated processes was initiated in 1970 at the University of Paris XII/IUT de Créteil, which became in 2010 the University Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC). This research initially focused on the development and applications of pervaporation membranes, then concerned the metrology of ion-exchange membranes, then expanded to dialysis processes using these membranes, and recently opened to composite membranes and their applications in production or purification processes. Both experimental and fundamental aspects have been developed in parallel. This evolution has been reinforced by an opening to the French and European industries, and to the international scene, especially to the Krasnodar Membrane Institute (Kuban State University-Russia) and to the Department of Chemistry, (Qassim University-Saudi Arabia). Here, we first presented the history of this research activity, then developed the main research axes carried out at UPEC over the 2012-2022 period; then, we gave the main results obtained, and finally, showed the cross contribution of the developed collaborations. We avoided a chronological presentation of these activities and grouped them by theme: composite membranes and ion-exchange membranes. For composite membranes, we have detailed three applications: highly selective lithium-ion extraction, bleach production, and water and industrial effluent treatments. For ion-exchange membranes, we focused on their characterization methods, their use in Neutralization Dialysis for brackish water demineralization, and their fouling and antifouling processes. It appears that the research activities on membranes within UPEC are very dynamic and fruitful, and benefit from scientific exchanges with our Russian partners, which contributed to the development of strong membrane activity on water treatment within Qassim University. Finally, four main perspectives of this research activity were given: the design of autonomous and energy self-sufficient processes, refinement of characterization by Electrochemical Scanning Microscopy, functional membrane separators, and green membrane preparation and use.

Is It Possible to Prepare a "Super" Anion-Exchange Membrane by a Polypyrrole-Based Modification?

In spite of wide variety of commercial ion-exchange membranes, their characteristics, in particular, electrical conductivity and counterion permselectivity, are unsatisfactory for some applications, such as electrolyte solution concentration. This study is aimed at obtaining an anion-exchange membrane (AEM) of high performance in concentrated solutions. An AEM is prepared with a polypyrrole (PPy)-based modification of a heterogeneous AEM with quaternary ammonium functional groups. Concentration dependences of the conductivity, diffusion permeability and Cl− transport number in NaCl solutions are measured and simulated using a new version of the microheterogeneous model. The model describes changes in membrane swelling with increasing concentration and the effect of these changes on the transport characteristics. It is assumed that PPy occupies macro- and mesopores of the host membrane where it replaces non-selective electroneutral solution. Increasing conductivity and selectivity are explained by the presence of positively charged PPy groups. It is found that the conductivity of a freshly prepared membrane reaches 20 mS/cm and the chloride transport number > 0.99 in 4 M NaCl. A choice of input parameters allows quantitative agreement between the experimental and simulation results. However, PPy has shown itself to be an unstable material. This article discusses what parameters a membrane can have to show such exceptional characteristics.

Stability of Ion Exchange Membranes in Electrodialysis

During electrodialysis the ion exchange membranes are affected by such factors as passage of electric current, heating, tangential flow of solution and exposure to chemical agents. It can potentially cause the degradation of ion exchange groups and of polymeric backbone, worsening the performance of the process and necessitating the replacement of the membranes. This article aims to review how the composition and the structure of ion exchange membranes change during the electrodialysis or the studies imitating it.

Ion and Water Transport in Ion-Exchange Membranes for Power Generation Systems: Guidelines for Modeling

Artificial ion-exchange and other charged membranes, such as biomembranes, are self-organizing nanomaterials built from macromolecules. The interactions of fragments of macromolecules results in phase separation and the formation of ion-conducting channels. The properties conditioned by the structure of charged membranes determine their application in separation processes (water treatment, electrolyte concentration, food industry and others), energy (reverse electrodialysis, fuel cells and others), and chlore-alkali production and others. The purpose of this review is to provide guidelines for modeling the transport of ions and water in charged membranes, as well as to describe the latest advances in this field with a focus on power generation systems. We briefly describe the main structural elements of charged membranes which determine their ion and water transport characteristics. The main governing equations and the most commonly used theories and assumptions are presented and analyzed. The known models are classified and then described based on the information about the equations and the assumptions they are based on. Most attention is paid to the models which have the greatest impact and are most frequently used in the literature. Among them, we focus on recent models developed for proton-exchange membranes used in fuel cells and for membranes applied in reverse electrodialysis.

Membranes Based on Polyvinylidene Fluoride and Radiation-Grafted Sulfonated Polystyrene and Their Performance in Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Proton-exchange membranes based on gamma-irradiated films of PVDF and radiation-grafted sulfonated polystyrene with an ion-exchange capacity of 1.8 meq/g and crosslinking degrees of 0 and 3% were synthesized. A solvent-free, environmentally friendly method of styrene grafting from its aqueous emulsion, with a styrene content of only 5 vol.% was used. Energy dispersive X-ray mapping analysis showed that the grafted sulfonated polystyrene is uniformly distributed throughout the membrane thickness. The obtained materials had a proton conductivity up to 132 mS/cm at 80 °C and a hydrogen permeability of up to 5.2 cm²/s at 30 °C, which significantly exceeded similar values for Nafion^®-212 membranes. The resulting membranes exhibited a H₂/O₂ fuel cell peak power density of up to 0.4 W/cm² at 65 °C. Accelerated stability tests showed that adding a crosslinking agent could significantly increase the stability of the membranes in the fuel cells. The thermal properties and crystallinity of the membranes were investigated through differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction methods. The conductivity, water uptake, and mechanical properties of the membranes (stress–strain curves) were also characterized.

Ionic Mobility in Ion-Exchange Membranes

Membrane technologies are widely demanded in a number of modern industries. Ion-exchange membranes are one of the most widespread and demanded types of membranes. Their main task is the selective transfer of certain ions and prevention of transfer of other ions or molecules, and the most important characteristics are ionic conductivity and selectivity of transfer processes. Both parameters are determined by ionic and molecular mobility in membranes. To study this mobility, the main techniques used are nuclear magnetic resonance and impedance spectroscopy. In this comprehensive review, mechanisms of transfer processes in various ion-exchange membranes, including homogeneous, heterogeneous, and hybrid ones, are discussed. Correlations of structures of ion-exchange membranes and their hydration with ion transport mechanisms are also reviewed. The features of proton transfer, which plays a decisive role in the membrane used in fuel cells and electrolyzers, are highlighted. These devices largely determine development of hydrogen energy in the modern world. The features of ion transfer in heterogeneous and hybrid membranes with inorganic nanoparticles are also discussed.

Nonwoven Ion-Exchange Membranes with High Protein Binding Capacity for Bioseparations

This study presents the preparation and characterization of UV-grafted polybutylene terepthalate (PBT) ion exchange nonwoven membranes for chromatographic purification of biomolecules. The PBT nonwoven was functionalized with sulfonate and secondary amine for cation and anion exchange (CEX and AEX), respectively. The anion exchange membrane showed an equilibrium static binding capacity of 1300 mg BSA/g of membrane, while the cationic membranes achieved a maximum equilibrium binding capacity of over 700 mg hIgG/g of membrane. The CEX and AEX membranes resulted in dynamic binding capacities under flow conditions, with a residence time of 0.1 min, of 200 mg hIgG/mL of membrane and 55 mg BSA/mL of membrane, respectively. The selectivity of the PBT-CEX membranes was demonstrated by purifying antibodies and antibody fragments (hIgG and scFv) from CHO cell culture supernatants in a bind-an-elute mode. The purity of the eluted samples exceeded 97%, with good log removal values (LRV) for both host cell proteins (HCPs) and DNA. The PBT-AEX nonwoven membranes exhibited a DNA LRV of 2.6 from hIgG solutions in a flow-through mode with little loss of product. These results indicate that these membranes have significant potential for use in downstream purification of biologics.

Adsorption of Anthocyanins by Cation and Anion Exchange Resins with Aromatic and Aliphatic Polymer Matrices

This study examines the mechanisms of adsorption of anthocyanins from model aqueous solutions at pH values of 3, 6, and 9 by ion-exchange resins making the main component of heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes. This is the first report demonstrating that the pH of the internal solution of a KU-2-8 aromatic cation-exchange resin is 2-3 units lower than the pH of the external bathing anthocyanin-containing solution, and the pH of the internal solution of some anion-exchange resins with an aromatic (AV-17-8, AV-17-2P) or aliphatic (EDE-10P) matrix is 2-4 units higher than the pH of the external solution. This pH shift is caused by the Donnan exclusion of hydroxyl ions (in the KU-2-8 resin) or protons (in the AV-17-8, AV-17-2P, and EDE-10P resins). The most significant pH shift is observed for the EDE-10P resin, which has the highest ion-exchange capacity causing the highest Donnan exclusion. Due to the pH shift, the electric charge of anthocyanin inside an ion-exchange resin differs from its charge in the external solution. At pH 6, the external solution contains uncharged anthocyanin molecules. However, in the AV-17-8 and AV-17-2P resins, the anthocyanins are present as singly charged anions, while in the EDE-10P resin, they are in the form of doubly charged anions. Due to the electrostatic interactions of these anions with the positively charged fixed groups of anion-exchange resins, the adsorption capacities of AV-17-8, AV-17-2P, and EDE-10P were higher than expected. It was established that the electrostatic interactions of anthocyanins with the charged fixed groups increase the adsorption capacity of the aromatic resin by a factor of 1.8-2.5 compared to the adsorption caused by the π-π (stacking) interactions. These results provide new insights into the fouling mechanism of ion-exchange materials by polyphenols; they can help develop strategies for membrane cleaning and for extracting anthocyanins from juices and wine using ion-exchange resins and membranes.

Preparation and Chemical Protective Clothing Application of PVDF Based Sodium Sulfonate Membrane

Chemical protective clothing (CPC) is major equipment to protect human skin from hazardous chemical warfare agents (CWAs), especially nerve agents and blister agents. CPC performance is mainly dominated by the chemical protective material, which needs to meet various requirements, such as mechanical robustness, protective properties, physiological comfort, cost-effectiveness, and dimensional stability. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based sodium sulfonate membranes with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) are prepared simply from low-cost materials. Their mechanical properties, contact angles, permeations, and selectivities have been tested and compared with each other. Results show that membranes with IEC in the range of 1.5–2 mmol g⁻¹ have high selectivities of water vapor permeation over CWA simulant vapor permeation and good mechanical properties. Therefore, PVDF-based sodium sulfonate membranes are potential materials for CPC applications.

Selectivity of Transport Processes in Ion-Exchange Membranes: Relationship with the Structure and Methods for Its Improvement

Nowadays, ion-exchange membranes have numerous applications in water desalination, electrolysis, chemistry, food, health, energy, environment and other fields. All of these applications require high selectivity of ion transfer, i.e., high membrane permselectivity. The transport properties of ion-exchange membranes are determined by their structure, composition and preparation method. For various applications, the selectivity of transfer processes can be characterized by different parameters, for example, by the transport number of counterions (permselectivity in electrodialysis) or by the ratio of ionic conductivity to the permeability of some gases (crossover in fuel cells). However, in most cases there is a correlation: the higher the flux density of the target component through the membrane, the lower the selectivity of the process. This correlation has two aspects: first, it follows from the membrane material properties, often expressed as the trade-off between membrane permeability and permselectivity; and, second, it is due to the concentration polarization phenomenon, which increases with an increase in the applied driving force. In this review, both aspects are considered. Recent research and progress in the membrane selectivity improvement, mainly including a number of approaches as crosslinking, nanoparticle doping, surface modification, and the use of special synthetic methods (e.g., synthesis of grafted membranes or membranes with a fairly rigid three-dimensional matrix) are summarized. These approaches are promising for the ion-exchange membranes synthesis for electrodialysis, alternative energy, and the valuable component extraction from natural or waste-water. Perspectives on future development in this research field are also discussed.

Photo- and Thermosensitive Polymer Membrane with a Tunable Microstructure Doped with Graphene Oxide Nanosheets and Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) for the Application of Light-Cleaning

Traditional polymer membranes exhibit a constant structure that makes adjustment of the filtration process difficult, such as flux changing and contaminant cleaning. Inspired by the automatically closing behavior of leaf stomata under strong light, we prepared a membrane with thermo- and photosensitivities, whose microstructure, as well as filtration properties, could be controlled by adjusting the light condition. The membrane was fabricated by the immersion phase inversion method with a casting solution of polyvinylidene fluoride-g-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVDF-g-PNIPAAm) and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Additionally, the membrane could be heated to a high temperature in a short time under illumination, causing shrinkage of its PNIPAAm chains and expansion of its membrane pores. On the basis of the reversible photoinduced structural transformation, the membrane exhibited a high water gating ratio under the switching of light on/off. Moreover, we proposed a novel and simple method to clear the contaminant from the pores of the membrane via light, which we named "light-cleaning". Light-cleaning had a flux recovery rate of 99.2%, substantially higher than that of back-washing (62%). This work not only extends the controllability and functionality of the polymer membrane but also develops a new membrane cleaning system.

Neutralization Dialysis for Phenylalanine and Mineral Salt Separation. Simple Theory and Experiment

A simple non-steady state mathematical model is proposed for the process of purification of an amino acid solution from mineral salts by the method of neutralization dialysis (ND), carried out in a circulating hydrodynamic mode. The model takes into account the characteristics of membranes (thickness, exchange capacity and electric conductivity) and solution (concentration and components nature) as well as the solution flow rate in dialyzer compartments. In contrast to the known models, the new model considers a local change in the ion concentration in membranes and the adjacent diffusion layers. In addition, the model takes into consideration the ability of the amino acid to enter the protonation/deprotonation reactions. A comparison of the results of simulations with experimental data allows us to conclude that the model adequately describes the ND of a strong electrolyte (NaCl) and amino acid (phenylalanine) mixture solutions in the case where the diffusion ability of amino acids in membranes is much less, than mineral salts. An example shows the application of the model to predict the fluxes of salt ions through ion exchange membranes as well as pH of the desalination solution at a higher than in experiments flow rate of solutions in ND dialyzer compartments.
