Effect of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Different Ligand Structures (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) on the Optoelectronic Performance of Perovskite Photodetectors

Crystal engineering using passivation to reduce perovskite defects is crucial to improving the quality of perovskite crystals and optoelectronic properties. Because of their unique properties, metal-organic framework materials have been used as an emerging and effective passivator for perovskite materials and optoelectronic devices. This paper focuses on the differences in the optoelectronic properties of zeolite imidazolium ester framework materials (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) doped with different conjugated ring ligands for perovskite photodetectors. This paper proposes a simple and effective method to dope zeolite imidazolium ester framework nanoparticles (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) into organic-inorganic perovskite MAPbI3 films. The crystalline quality of the perovskite films was improved after doping with ZIF-11 and ZIF-23. Meanwhile, the performance of the planar photoconductive devices was significantly improved. The photoresponsivity of the photodetector doped with ZIF-23 was 0.185A/W, and the detectivity was 4.22 × 1012 Jones. The photoresponsivity of the photodetector doped with ZIF-23 was 0.164 A/W, and the detectivity was 3.27 × 1012 Jones. The devices maintained long-time operational stability, operating without significant degradation for 480 s under the 1.2 V bias voltage operating condition. In addition, we observed a significant suppression of the ion migration process in ZIF-23 for a voltage-controlled ion migration process. The potential application of perovskite and MOF heterojunction materials for image information acquisition and storage is demonstrated.

Metal organic frameworks as advanced functional materials for aptasensor design

BACKGROUND

Advancement in coordination chemistry has achieved an impressive development of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the supramolecular hybrid materials, comprising harmonized metal nodes with organic ligands. Scope and approach: MOFs offer the unique properties of easy synthesis, nanoscale structure, adjustable size and morphology, high porosity, large surface area, supreme chemical tunability and stability, and biocompatibility. The features provide an exceptional opportunity for the widely usage of MOFs in the different scientific fields, e.g. biomedicine, electrocatalysis, food safety, energy storage, environmental surveillance, and biosensing platforms. The synergistic incorporation of the aptamer advantages and the superiorities of MOFs attains the novel MOF-based aptasensors. The excellent selectivity and sensitivity of the MOF-based aptasensors nominate them as efficient lab-on-chip tools for cost-effective, label-free, portable, and real-time monitoring of diverse targets.

KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS

Here, we review the achievements in the sensor design by cooperation of MOF motifs and aptamers with the conspicuous potential of determining the targets. Finally, some results are expressed that provide a valuable viewpoint for developing the novel MOF-based test strips in the future.

Mixed Matrix Membranes Based on Torlon® and ZIF-8 for High-Temperature, Size-Selective Gas Separations

Torlon^® is a thermally and plasticization-resistant polyamide imide characterized by low gas permeability at room temperature. In this work, we aimed at improving the polymer performance in the thermally-enhanced He/CO₂ and H₂/CO₂ separations, by compounding Torlon^® with a highly permeable filler, ZIF-8, to fabricate Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs). The effect of filler loading, gas size, and temperature on the MMMs permeability, diffusivity, and selectivity was investigated. The He permeability increased by a factor of 3, while the He/CO₂ selectivity decreased by a factor of 2, when adding 25 wt % of ZIF-8 at 65 °C to Torlon^®; similar trends were observed for the case of H₂. The MMMs permeability and size-selectivity were both enhanced by temperature. The behavior of MMMs is intermediate between the pure polymer and pure filler ones, and can be described with models for composites, indicating that such materials have a good polymer/filler adhesion and their performance could be tailored by acting on the formulation. The behavior observed is in line with previous investigations on MMMs based on glassy polymers and ZIF-8, in similar conditions, and indicates that ZIF-8 can be used as a polymer additive when the permeability is a controlling aspect, with a proper choice of loading and operative temperature.

Synthesis of ZIF-11 Membranes: The Influence of Preparation Technique and Support Type

Due to its structural features, ZIF-11 is one of the most interesting materials for gas separation applications. Herein, we report a systematic study on the synthesis of ZIF-11 as a supported membrane. For this, we adapted optimized conditions for the ZIF-11 powder synthesis, identified in our previous works, to form ZIF layers on symmetric and asymmetric stainless-steel and asymmetric α-Al₂O₃ supports. Different techniques were investigated for the challenging layer formation, namely, in situ crystallization (ISC), multiple in situ crystallization (MISC), and the seeding and secondary growth (SSG) method. It was possible to deposit ZIF-11 on different supports by ISC and MISC, although it was difficult to obtain complete layers. SSG, in turn, was more effective in forming dense and well-intergrown ZIF-11 layers. This agrees well with the generally accepted fact that seeding considerably facilitates layer formation. Systematic studies of both individual steps of SSG (seeding and secondary growth) led to a basic understanding of layer formation of ZIF-11 on the different supports. The best membranes prepared by rub seeding and secondary growth achieved Knudsen selectivity. Improved gas separation performance is expected if the formation of defects can be avoided.

Enantioselective Mixed Matrix Membranes for Chiral Resolution

Most pharmaceuticals are stereoisomers that each enantiomer shows dramatically different biological activity. Therefore, the production of optically pure chemicals through sustainable and energy-efficient technology is one of the main objectives in the pharmaceutical industry. Membrane-based separation is a continuous process performed on a large scale that uses far less energy than the conventional thermal separation process. Enantioselective polymer membranes have been developed for chiral resolution of pharmaceuticals; however, it is difficult to generate sufficient enantiomeric excess (ee) with conventional polymers. This article describes a chiral resolution strategy using a composite structure of mixed matrix membrane that employs chiral fillers. We discuss several enantioselective fillers, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites, porous organic cages (POCs), and their potential use as chiral fillers in mixed matrix membranes. State-of-the-art enantioselective mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and the future design consideration for highly efficient enantioselective MMMs are discussed.

Molecular Diffusion in a Flexible Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework over the Course of Structural Contraction

In situ 1H pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR was used to investigate the molecular diffusion of n-butane in the pores of the flexible metal-organic framework DUT-49(Cu) at 298 K at different pore loadings, including pressure ranges below and above the negative gas adsorption (NGA) transition caused by structural contraction of the material. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, the investigation provided crucial insight into confined diffusion within a highly flexible pore environment. The self-diffusion coefficients were derived from the experiment and compared with simulations, capturing the diffusion during n-butane adsorption and desorption. This complementary approach has yielded experimental characterization of molecular diffusion mechanisms during the unique process of NGA. This includes the observation of a 4-fold decrease of diffusivity within a less than 2 kPa gas pressure variation, corresponding to the NGA transition point.

MOF-Based Membranes for Gas Separations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent the largest known class of porous crystalline materials ever synthesized. Their narrow pore windows and nearly unlimited structural and chemical features have made these materials of significant interest for membrane-based gas separations. In this comprehensive review, we discuss opportunities and challenges related to the formation of pure MOF films and mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). Common and emerging separation applications are identified, and membrane transport theory for MOFs is described and contextualized relative to the governing principles that describe transport in polymers. Additionally, cross-cutting research opportunities using advanced metrologies and computational techniques are reviewed. To quantify membrane performance, we introduce a simple membrane performance score that has been tabulated for all of the literature data compiled in this review. These data are reported on upper bound plots, revealing classes of MOF materials that consistently demonstrate promising separation performance. Recommendations are provided with the intent of identifying the most promising materials and directions for the field in terms of fundamental science and eventual deployment of MOF materials for commercial membrane-based gas separations.

Exploring the Scope of Macrocyclic "Shoe-last" Templates in the Mechanochemical Synthesis of RHO Topology Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs)

The macrocyclic cavitand MeMeCH2 is used as a template for the mechanochemical synthesis of 0.2MeMeCH2@RHO-Zn16(Cl2Im)32 (0.2MeMeCH2@ZIF-71) and RHO-ZnBIm2 (ZIF-11) zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). It is shown that MeMeCH2 significantly accelerates the mechanochemical synthesis, providing high porosity products (BET surface areas of 1140 m2/g and 869 m2/g, respectively). Templation of RHO-topology ZIF frameworks constructed of linkers larger than benzimidazole (HBIm) was unsuccessful. It is also shown that cavitands other than MeMeCH2-namely MeHCH2, MeiBuCH2, HPhCH2, MePhCH2, BrPhCH2, BrC5CH2-can serve as effective templates for the synthesis of x(cavitand)@RHO-ZnIm2 products. The limitations on cavitand size and shape are explored in terms of their effectiveness as templates.
