Enhancement strategies of poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer membranes for CO2 separation: A review

Poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax) membranes have become the preferred CO2 separation membrane because of their excellent CO2 affinity and robust mechanical resistance. Nevertheless, their development must be considered to overcome the typical obstacles in polymeric membranes, including the perm-selectivity trade-off, plasticization, and physical aging. This article discusses the recent enhancement strategies as a guideline for designing and developing Pebax membranes. Five strategies were developed in the past few years to improve Pebax gas transport properties, including crosslinking, mobile carrier attachment, polymer blending, filler incorporation, and the hybrid technique. Among them, filler incorporation and the hybrid technique were most favorable for boosting CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation performance with a trade-off-free profile. On the other hand, modified Pebax membranes must deal with two latent issues, mechanical strength loss, and perm-selectivity off-balance. Therefore, exploring novel materials with unique structures and surface properties will be promising for further research. In addition, seeking eco-friendly additives has become worthwhile for establishing Pebax membrane sustainable development for gas separation.

Enrichment of biogas through composite membrane of PEBA-1657/ hierarchical T-type zeolite

Presently, composite membranes emerged as a promising approach to overcome the limitations of polymeric and inorganic membranes particularly in acid gas separation. In the present work, composites membranes were fabricated by combining hierarchical T-Type (h-zeolite T) zeolite and PEBA-1657 at different filler composition that ranging from 5 wt% - 30 wt% for the CO₂/CH₄ separation. The physicochemical properties of the resultant inorganic filler and membranes were investigated by using Brunauer-Emmett- Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier Transform infra-red (FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FESEM and EDX analysis revealed that the formation of voids and agglomeration of particles is pronounced as the fillers loading was increased up to 30 wt%. The single gas permeation test demonstrated that amalgamation of h-zeolite T particles into PEBA-1657 has resulted in the improvement of CO₂ permeability up to 122% and CO₂/CH₄ selectivity up to 31%. Hybrid membrane encapsulated with 25 wt% of h-zeolite T displayed a maximum separation efficiency with the highest CO₂ permeability of 164.83 Barrer and CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of 19.37. However, further increment of fillers composition up to 30 wt% resulted in a sharp reduction of CO_2/CH₄ selectivity to 15.80 due to the particles sedimentation and agglomeration. Overall, the favorable gas transport behavior of PEBA-1657/h-zeolite T composite membrane indicates its promising prospect for CO₂/CH₄ separation especially in biogas and natural gas purification application. Future research efforts are directed on the optimization of the fabrication parameters and performance investigation at different operating condition to further enhance the CO₂ separation and extend its operability under various environment.

Insights on Cryogenic Distillation Technology for Simultaneous CO2 and H2S Removal for Sour Gas Fields

Natural gas demand has dramatically increased due to the emerging growth of the world economy and industry. Presently, CO2 and H2S content in gas fields accounts for up to 90% and 15%, respectively. Apart from fulfilling the market demand, CO2 and H2S removal from natural gas is critical due to their corrosive natures, the low heating value of natural gas and the greenhouse gas effect. To date, several gas fields have remained unexplored due to limited technologies to monetize the highly sour natural gas. A variety of conventional technologies have been implemented to purify natural gas such as absorption, adsorption and membrane and cryogenic separation. The application of these technologies in natural gas upgrading are also presented. Among these commercial technologies, cryogenic technology has advanced rapidly in gas separation and proven ideally suitable for bulk CO2 removal due to its independence from absorbents or adsorbents, which require a larger footprint, weight and energy. Present work comprehensively reviews the mechanisms and potential of the advanced nonconventional cryogenic separation technologies for processing of natural gas streams with high CO2 and H2S content. Moreover, the prospects of emerging cryogenic technologies for future commercialization exploitation are highlighted.

Polysulfone Membranes Embedded with Halloysites Nanotubes: Preparation and Properties

In the present study, nanocomposite ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by incorporating nanotubes clay halloysite (HNTs) into polysulfone (PSF) and PSF/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) dope solutions followed by membrane casting using phase inversion method. Characterization of HNTs were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis. The pore structure, morphology, hydrophilicity and mechanical properties of the composite membranes were characterized by using SEM, water contact angle (WCA) measurements, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was shown that the incorporation of HNTs enhanced hydrophilicity and mechanical properties of the prepared PSF membranes. Compared to the pristine PSF membrane, results show that the total porosity and pore size of PSF/HNTs composite membranes increased when HNTs loadings were more than 0.5 wt % and 1.0 wt %, respectively. These findings correlate well with changes in water flux of the prepared membranes. It was observed that HNTs were homogenously dispersed within the PSF membrane matrix at HNTs content of 0.1 to 0.5 wt % and the PSF/HNTs membranes prepared by incorporating 0.2 wt % HNTs loading possess the optimal mechanical properties in terms of elastic modulus and yield stress. In the case of the PSF/PVP matrix, the optimal mechanical properties were obtained with 0.3 wt % of HNTs because PVP enhances the HNTs distribution. Results of bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtration tests indicated that PSF/0.2 wt % HNTs membrane exhibited high BSA rejection and notable anti-fouling properties.
