Effects of relative humidity, particle hygroscopicity, and filter hydrophilicity on filtration performance of hollow fiber air filters

Automatic weighing system vs. manual weighing precision comparison in PM-loaded filter measurements under different humidity conditions

Currently, there is a lack of research directly comparing the precision of automatic weighing systems and manual weighing in the context of particulate matter (PM) filter equilibration and measurements under different humidity conditions. During experimental measurements, three different types of PM-loaded filters were weighed using manual and automatic balances. During manual weighing, every filter was weighed twice in three different relative humidity conditions. The same procedure was done using an automated weighing system. In most cases, it was found that under relative humidities in the range of 30-55% RH, the manual and automated methods can be treated as referential. Regarding device stability, very slight but overall better precision was found for 30% RH, suggesting that 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L requirements regarding conditioning humidity (30-40% RH) seem more suitable than those presented in the PN-EN 12341:2014 standard (45-50% RH). Understanding the effects of the influence of the RH% on PM mass measurements is a matter of great importance, because water vapor condensed on a filter can affect the particulate matter concentrations. This is especially important in areas where regulatory limits are exceeded. Calculation of uncertainty in the PM mass measurements is therefore crucial for determining the actual sample mass and improving air monitoring practices. In a nutshell, the experimental results obtained clearly describe how changing RH% conditions affect the PM weighing precision during manual and automated measurements.

Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes for Controlling Airborne Viruses: Present Status, Standardization of Aerosol Filtration Tests, and Future Development

The global COVID-19 pandemic has raised great public concern about the airborne transmission of viral pathogens. Virus-laden aerosols with small size could be suspended in the air for a long duration and remain infectious. Among a series of measures implemented to mitigate the airborne spread of infectious diseases, filtration by face masks, respirators, and air filters is a potent nonpharmacologic intervention. Compared with conventional air filtration media, nanofibrous membranes fabricated via electrospinning are promising candidates for controlling airborne viruses due to their desired characteristics, i.e., a reduced pore size (submicrometers to several micrometers), a larger specific surface area and porosity, and retained surface and volume charges. So far, a wide variety of electrospun nanofibrous membranes have been developed for aerosol filtration, and they have shown excellent filtration performance. However, current studies using electrospinning for controlling airborne viruses vary significantly in the practice of aerosol filtration tests, including setup configurations and operations. The discrepancy among various studies makes it difficult, if not impossible, to compare filtration performance. Therefore, there is a pressing need to establish a standardized protocol for evaluating the electrospun nanofibrous membranes' performance for removing viral aerosols. In this perspective, we first reviewed the properties and performance of diverse filter media, including electrospun nanofibrous membranes, for removing viral aerosols. Next, aerosol filtration protocols for electrospun nanofibrous membranes were discussed with respect to the aerosol generation, filtration, collection, and detection. Thereafter, standardizing the aerosol filtration test system for electrospun nanofibrous membranes was proposed. In the end, the future advancement of electrospun nanofibrous membranes for enhanced air filtration was discussed. This perspective provides a comprehensive understanding of status and challenges of electrospinning for air filtration, and it sheds light on future nanomaterial and protocol development for controlling airborne viruses, preventing the spread of infectious diseases, and beyond.

Aerosol capture and coronavirus spike protein deactivation by enzyme functionalized antiviral membranes

The airborne nature of coronavirus transmission makes it critical to develop new barrier technologies that can simultaneously reduce aerosol and viral spread. Here, we report nanostructured membranes with tunable thickness and porosity for filtering coronavirus-sized aerosols, combined with antiviral enzyme functionalization that can denature spike glycoproteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in low-hydration environments. Thin, asymmetric membranes with subtilisin enzyme and methacrylic functionalization show more than 98.90% filtration efficiency for 100-nm unfunctionalized and protein-functionalized polystyrene latex aerosol particles. Unfunctionalized membranes provided a protection factor of 540 ± 380 for coronavirus-sized particle, above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's standard of 10 for N95 masks. SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein on the surface of coronavirus-sized particles was denatured in 30 s by subtilisin enzyme-functionalized membranes with 0.02-0.2% water content on the membrane surface.

Demonstration of Hollow Fiber Membrane-Based Enclosed Space Air Remediation for Capture of an Aerosolized Synthetic SARS-CoV-2 Mimic and Pseudovirus Particles

Reduction of airborne viral particles in enclosed spaces is critical in controlling pandemics. Three different hollow fiber membrane (HFM) modules were investigated for viral aerosol separation in enclosed spaces. Pore structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and air transport properties were measured. Particle removal efficiency was characterized using aerosols generated by a collision atomizer from a defined mixture of synthetic nanoparticles including SARS-CoV-2 mimics (protein-coated 100 nm polystyrene). HFM1 (polyvinylidene fluoride, ~50-1300 nm pores) demonstrated 96.5-100% efficiency for aerosols in the size range of 0.3-3 μm at a flow rate of 18.6 ± 0.3 SLPM (~1650 LMH), whereas HFM2 (polypropylene, ~40 nm pores) and HFM3 (hydrophilized polyether sulfone, ~140-750 nm pores) demonstrated 99.65-100% and 98.8-100% efficiency at flow rates of 19.7 ± 0.3 SLPM (~820 LMH) and 19.4 ± 0.2 SLPM (~4455 LMH), respectively. Additionally, lasting filtration with minimal fouling was demonstrated using ambient aerosols over 2 days. Finally, each module was evaluated with pseudovirus (vesicular stomatitis virus) aerosol, demonstrating 99.3% (HFM1), >99.8% (HFM2), and >99.8% (HFM3) reduction in active pseudovirus titer as a direct measure of viral particle removal. These results quantified the aerosol separation efficiency of HFMs and highlight the need for further development of this technology to aid the fight against airborne viruses and particulate matter concerning human health.

Nanoarchitectonics for Electrospun Membranes with Asymmetric Wettability

Membranes with asymmetric wettability have attracted significant interest by virtue of their unique transport characteristics and functionalities arising from different wetting behaviors of each membrane surface. The cross-sectional wettability distinction enables a membrane to realize directional liquid transport or multifunction integration, resulting in rapid advance in applications, such as moisture management, fog collection, oil-water separation, and membrane distillation. Compared with traditional homogeneous membranes, these membranes possess enhanced transport performance and higher separation efficiency owing to the synergistic or individual effects of asymmetric wettability. This Review covers the recent progress in fabrication, transport mechanisms, and applications of electrospun membranes with asymmetric wettability and provides a perspective on future development in this important area.

An Assessment on Average Pressure Drop and Dust-Holding Capacity of Hollow-Fiber Membranes in Air Filtration

In this work, we tried to analyze dust loading behavior of polypropylene hollow fiber membranes using average pressure drop models. Hollow fiber membranes varying in fiber diameter were loaded with a standardized test dust to simulate particle-polluted air. We measured pressure drop development of the membranes at different flowrates and dust concentrations, and, after each experiment, the dust deposited on the membrane fibers was weighed to obtain dust holding capacity (DHC). The obtained experimental data was analyzed using various average pressure drop models and compared with average pressure drop obtained from pressure drop/dust load dependence using a curve fit. Exponential and polynomial fitting was used and compared. Pressure drop in relation to the dust load followed different trends depending on the experimental conditions and inner fiber diameter. At higher flowrate, the dependence was polynomial no matter what the fiber diameter. However, with higher fiber diameter at lower permeate velocities, the dependence was close to exponential curve and followed similar trends as observed in planar filter media. Dust-holding capacity of the membranes depended on the experimental conditions and was up to 21.4 g. However, higher dust holding capacity was impossible to reach no matter the experiment duration due to self-cleaning ability of the tested membranes.

Super-hydrophobic Cellulose Nanofiber Air Filter with Highly Efficient Filtration and Humidity Resistance

High-air humidity, especially condensation into droplets under the influence of temperature, can pose a serious threat to air purification filters. This report introduces the use of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) for the silanization hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and obtains an air filter with super-hydrophobicity (CA = 152.4°) and high-efficiency filtration of particulate matter (PM) through the freeze-drying technology. The antihumidity performance of CNFs filters that undergo hydrophobic modification in high-humidity air is improved. Especially in the case of high-humidity air forming condensed water droplets, the increase in the rate of filtration resistance of the hydrophobically modified CNFs filter is much lower than that of the unmodified filter. In addition, the water-vapor-transmission rate of the hydrophobically modified filter is improved. More importantly, adding MTMS can regulate the porous structure of CNFs filters and improve the filtration performance. The specific surface area and the porosity of the filter are 26.54 m²/g and 99.21%, respectively, and the filtering effects of PM_1.0 and PM_2.5 reach 99.31 and 99.75%, respectively, while a low-filtration resistance (42 Pa) and a quality factor of up to 0.122 Pa^-1 are achieved. This work has improved the application potential of high-performance air-purification devices to remove particulate pollution and may provide useful insights to design next-generation air filters suitable for application in high-air humidity.

Physiological interactions with personal-protective clothing, physically demanding work and global warming: An Asia-Pacific perspective

The Asia-Pacific contains over half of the world's population, 21 countries have a Gross Domestic Product <25% of the world's largest economy, many countries have tropical climates and all suffer the impact of global warming. That 'perfect storm' exacerbates the risk of occupational heat illness, yet first responders must perform physically demanding work wearing personal-protective clothing and equipment. Unfortunately, the Eurocentric emphasis of past research has sometimes reduced its applicability to other ethnic groups. To redress that imbalance, relevant contemporary research has been reviewed, to which has been added information applicable to people of Asian, Melanesian and Polynesian ancestry. An epidemiological triad is used to identify the causal agents and host factors of work intolerance within hot-humid climates, commencing with the size dependency of resting metabolism and heat production accompanying load carriage, followed by a progression from the impact of single-layered clothing through to encapsulating ensembles. A morphological hypothesis is presented to account for inter-individual differences in heat production and heat loss, which seems to explain apparent ethnic- and gender-related differences in thermoregulation, at least within thermally compensable states. The mechanisms underlying work intolerance, cardiovascular insufficiency and heat illness are reviewed, along with epidemiological data from the Asia-Pacific. Finally, evidence-based preventative and treatment strategies are presented and updated concerning moisture-management fabrics and barriers, dehydration, pre- and post-exercise cooling, and heat adaptation. An extensive reference list is provided, with >25 recommendations enabling physiologists, occupational health specialists, policy makers, purchasing officers and manufacturers to rapidly extract interpretative outcomes pertinent to the Asia-Pacific.

A review on recent trends of antiviral nanoparticles and airborne filters: special insight on COVID-19 virus

Novel corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic in the last 4 months stimulates the international scientific community to search for vaccine of antiviral agents suitable for in activating the virus inside and outside the human body. More than 4 million people globally are infected by the virus and about 300,000 dead cases until this moment. The ventilation and airborne filters are also investigated aiming to develop an efficient antiviral filtration technology. Human secretion of the infected person as nasal or saliva droplets goes as airborne and distributes the virus everywhere around the person. N95 and N98 filters are the must use filters for capturing particles of sizes around 300 nm. The average size of the novel corona virus (COVID-19) is 100 nm and there is no standard or special filter suitable for this virus. The nanoparticle-coated airborne filter is a suitable technique in this regard. While the efficiency of this type of filters still needs to be enhanced, new developed nanofiber filters are proposed. Most recently, the charged nanofiber filters of sizes below 100 nm are developed and provide an efficient viral filtration and inactivation. The efficiency of filter must be kept at accepted level without increasing the pressure drop. The present review outlines the most efficient antiviral nanoparticles including the recent functional nanoparticles. The filtration theory, filtration modeling, filter testing, and different types of filter with special concentration on the charged nanofiber filter were discussed. The charged nanofiber filter able to capture novel corona virus (COVID-19) with 94% efficiency and a pressure drop less than 20 MPa.
