Biomimetic sulfated silk nanofibrils for constructing rapid mid-molecule toxins removal nanochannels

Dynamically Cross-Linked Double-Network Hydrogels with Matched Mechanical Properties and Ideal Biocompatibility for Artificial Blood Vessels

Vessel transplantation is currently considered the "gold standard" treatment for cardiovascular disease. However, ideal artificial vascular grafts should possess good biocompatibility and mechanical strength that match those of native autologous vascular tissue to promote in vivo tissue regeneration. In this study, a series of dynamic cross-linking double-network hydrogels and the resultant hydrogel tubes were prepared. The hydrogels (named PCO), composed of rigid poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), flexible carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), and a cross-linker of aldehyde-based β-cyclodextrin (OCD), were formed in a double-network structure with multiple dynamical cross-linking including dynamic imine bonds, hydrogen bonds, and microcrystalline regions. The PCO hydrogels exhibited superior mechanical strength, good network stability, and fatigue resistance. Additionally, it demonstrated excellent cell and blood compatibility. The results showed that the introduction of CMCS/OCD led to a significant increase in the proliferation rate of endothelial cells seeded on the surface of the hydrogel. The hemolysis rate in the test was lower than 0.3%, and both protein adsorption and platelet adhesion were reduced, indicating an excellent anticoagulant function. The plasma recalcification time test results showed that endogenous coagulation was alleviated to some extent. When formed into blood vessels and incubated with blood, no thrombus formation was observed, and there was minimal red blood cell aggregation. Therefore, this novel hydrogel tube, with excellent mechanical properties, exhibits antiadhesive characteristics toward blood cells and proteins, as well as antithrombotic properties, making it hold tremendous potential for applications in the biomedical and engineering fields.

Chitosan particles embedded bacterial nanocellulose flat membrane for hemodialysis

The development of bio-based hemodialysis membranes continues to be a challenge. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) membranes show potential in hemodialysis but can hardly retain beneficial proteins. Here, chitosan particles/bacterial nanocellulose (CSP/BNC) membranes were designed to efficiently remove uremic toxins and retain beneficial proteins. First, CSPs were synthesized in situ within a BNC membrane by ionic gelation following negative pressure impregnation. Subsequently, these membranes were thoroughly characterized. Compared with the BNC membrane, the pore volume and pore size of the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane decreased by 42.2 % and 32.1 %, respectively. The increased 22.2 times of Young's modulus and 88.9 % of tensile strength in the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane confirmed enhanced mechanical property. The sieving coefficient of bovine serum albumin decreased to 0.05 ± 0.03 in the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane. Moreover, the CSP/BNC membrane exhibited good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. The simulated dialysis results showed that the 3 % CSP/BNC membrane exhibited high clearance of urea (16.37 %/cm2) and lysozyme (3.54 %/cm2), while efficiently retaining bovine serum albumin (98.04 %/cm2). This is the first demonstration of the construction of a BNC-based hemodialysis membrane with in situ CSP formation to effectively regulate the pore properties of the membrane, making the CSP/BNC membrane a promising candidate for hemodialysis applications.

Negative Pressure in Water for Efficient Heat Utilization and Transfer

Thermodynamic metastable water in negative pressure provides a possible solution to elevate the upper limit of evaporative heat transfer capacity and the efficiency of low-grade heat utilization, but practical implementations are challenging due to the difficulty in generating and maintaining large negative pressure. Herein, we report a novel structure with a hydrogel film as the evaporation surface and a permeable substrate as the functional layer to suppress cavitation. Based on the structure, we achieve an evaporation-driven flow system with negative pressure as low as -1.67 MPa. Molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the importance of strong water-polymer interactions in negative pressure generation. With the large negative pressure, we demonstrate a streaming potential generator that spontaneously converts environmental energy into electricity and outputs a voltage of 1.06 V. Moreover, we propose a "negative pressure heat pipe", which achieves a high heat transfer density of 9.6 kW cm^-2 with a flow length of 1 m.

Protein nanofibrils for next generation sustainable water purification

Water scarcity is rapidly spreading across the planet, threatening the population across the five continents and calling for global sustainable solutions. Water reclamation is the most ecological approach for supplying clean drinking water. However, current water purification technologies are seldom sustainable, due to high-energy consumption and negative environmental footprint. Here, we review the cutting-edge technologies based on protein nanofibrils as water purification agents and we highlight the benefits of this green, efficient and affordable solution to alleviate the global water crisis. We discuss the different protein nanofibrils agents available and analyze them in terms of performance, range of applicability and sustainability. We underline the unique opportunity of designing protein nanofibrils for efficient water purification starting from food waste, as well as cattle, agricultural or dairy industry byproducts, allowing simultaneous environmental, economic and social benefits and we present a case analysis, including a detailed life cycle assessment, to establish their sustainable footprint against other common natural-based adsorbents, anticipating a bright future for this water purification approach.
