Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the well-known health benefits of exercise, women's participation in exercise is low worldwide. As women are at risk of developing various chronic diseases as they age, suggesting effective exercise methods that can maximize energy consumption is needed to prevent such conditions. Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) can maximize energy consumption. In this crossover, randomized controlled trial, we aimed to compare the EPOC for different exercise modalities including continuous exercise (CE), interval exercise (IE), and accumulated exercise (AE) that spent the homogenized energy expenditure during exercise in healthy women. METHODS Forty-four participants (age, 36.09 ± 11.73 years) were recruited and randomly allocated to three groups. The intensity of each modality was set as follows: CE was performed for 30 min at 60% peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). IE was performed once for 2 min at 80% VO2peak, followed by 3 min at 80% VO2peak, and 1 min at 40% VO2peak, for a total of six times over 26 min. AE was performed for 10 min with a 60% VO2peak and was measured thrice a day. RESULTS During exercise, energy metabolism was higher for IE and CE than that for AE. However, this was reversed for AE during EPOC. Consequently, the greatest energy metabolism was shown for AE during total time (exercise and EPOC). CONCLUSIONS By encouraging regular exercises, AE can help maintain and improve body composition by increasing compliance with exercise participation, given its short exercise times, and by efficiently increasing energy consumption through the accumulation of EPOC. Abstract
BACKGROUND Postprandial triglyceridemia may transitory affect the structure of HDL subclasses and probably their antiatherogenic properties but little is known in this field. We analyzed the HDL subclasses lipid content along postprandial period. METHODS Fifteen metabolic syndrome (MS) patients and 15 healthy controls were enrolled. HDL were isolated from plasma samples obtained at fasting and every 2-h up to 8-h, after a 75-g fat meal. Cholesterol (C), triglycerides (TAG), and phospholipid (Ph) plasma concentrations of five HDL subclasses were determined by densitometry of electrophoresis gels enzymatically stained. RESULTS The increase of postprandial triglyceridemia expressed as the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) was twice in MS patients than in controls. Only large HDL2b-TAG were higher in MS than controls at 4, 6 and 8h after meal intake, whereas cholesterol of HDL2a, 3a and 3b were lower at 8h. HDL size distribution shifted towards large HDL and HDL3a-, 3b- and 3c-subclasses had a lower content of cholesterol (estimated by the C-to-Ph ratio) in subjects whose iAUC>289.5mgh/dl (n=15) in comparison with those subjects with iAUC below this cutoff point (n=15), independently of the MS status and fasting TAG. Triglycerides content of HDL subclasses changed only discreetly along the postprandial period, whereas paraoxonase-1 remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS A high postprandial triglyceridemia conditions the shift of HDL size distribution towards large particles and the decrease of cholesterol in HDL3 subclasses. These data demonstrate that postprandial hypertriglyceridemia contributes to a transitory hypoalphalipoproteinemia that may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background and Objective: The increased risk for coronary artery disease observed in postmenopausal (PoW) women is partly explained by a more atherogenic lipoprotein profile. Moreover, natural menopause has been associated with an altered postprandial lipid profile. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that young premenopausal (PrW) and PoW may be independently associated with postprandial lipemia and indirectly associated with atherosclerosis. Patients and Methods: A total of 46 healthy PrW and 44 healthy PoW participated in a 5-h intervention study. Blood samples were taken at the baseline and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 h after eating. Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, fasting, and postprandial triglycerides (PPTG) were determined sequentially in blood samples. Results: PPTG presented significant higher values in PoW compared to PrW (P < 0.05), but other lipids did not significantly differ between groups. PPTG concentrations in PoW were significantly higher than in PrW (P < 0.05). There was a significant time influence (P < 0.05) in TG in PrW and PoW, while time to peak and peak concentration were significantly higher in PoW than PrW. Other lipids were also decreased more in PrW than PoW, but not significantly so. Cholesterol concentrations showed a significant reduction after 2 h, to reach values similar to the baseline after 4 h in PrW but not in PoW. HDL-cholesterol concentration was decreased more in PoW compared to PrW but it was not significant. Conclusions: Lipid postprandial response indicates a higher cardiovascular risk pattern in PoW compared to PrW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Postprandial lipemia predicts the evolution of cardiovascular disease. Obesity is associated with an increase in the magnitude of postprandial lipemia. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on the effects of acute ingestion of different types of fat on the postprandial lipemic response. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-one healthy men followed a 4-week baseline diet and then consumed three fat-loaded meals that included 1g fat/kg body wt (65%fat) according to a randomized crossover design. The compositions of the three meals were olive oil meal (22% saturated fatty acids (SFA), 38% monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), 4% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)); butter meal (35% SFA, 22% MUFA, 4% PUFA); walnuts meal (20% SFA, 24% MUFA, 16% PUFA, and 4% α-linolenic acid). Higher-weight (HW) subjects (BMI greater than the median 26.18 kg/m(2), n = 11) presented higher incremental area under the curve (iAUC) for triglycerides (TG), both in large- and small-TG rich lipoproteins (TRL) than lower-weight (LW) subjects (BMI<26.18 kg/m(2), n = 10) (p<0.05), and a similar trend for plasma TG (p = 0.084). Moreover, HW subjects presented higher concentrations for small TRL-cholesterol and small TRL-TG in different timepoints of the postprandial lipemia after the intake of enriched walnuts or butter meals compared with the olive oil-enriched meal (p < 0.05) No significant differences were observed between the three types of meals in the postprandial response of LW subjects. CONCLUSION HW subjects present a greater postprandial response than LW subjects, and they benefit from the consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil, to lower their levels of TRL particles during the postprandial state.

Abstract
There are over 600 million people worldwide covering Asian and Oceanic countries including India have the habit of chewing areca nut as masticator in different forms. Arecoline (C(8)H(13)NO(2)) has been reported as one of the abundant constituents of areca nut. A good number of scientific publications have made Arecoline responsible for oral cancer. Based on observation from clinical situation in North East India, one of the most betel quid chewing region of the country, we suspected a link between consumption of areca nut and Cerebro Vascular Disease like stroke. Therefore, we considered Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) receptor as target and Arecoline as ligand and studied ligand -target interaction using computational tools. Also we considered High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) receptor as another target to see if Arecoline has any binding potential with it over and above LDL receptor. Docking result indicated that Arecoline and Cholesterol both, have affinity towards extracellular domain of Human LDL receptor but affinity of Arecoline is much higher (-12.3560.) than that of Cholesterol(-0.1810). Docking of Arecoline and 1, 2-Hexyl-1- cyclopentanone thiosemicarbazone (thiosemicarbazone) with Bovine HDL receptor showed that Arecoline also has the potential (Score, -6.2690Kcal/Mol) to block HDL receptor though its potential is less than that (score, -10.0509 Kcal/Mol) of control (thiosemicarbazone). We, therefore, suggest that by inhibiting endocytosis of LDL cholesterol because of blocking LDL receptor function and also by preventing LDL cholesterol uptake by liver from blood because of interference with HDL receptor, Arecoline may contribute to atherosclerosis. The study therefore, indicates a positive correlation between chewing of betel quid and Cerebro Vascular Disease.

Abstract
In this study, we wished to determine whether 30 min of moderate-intensity exercise, corresponding to minimal recommended guidelines, attenuates post-prandial capillary triacylglycerol concentrations in obese men. Ten middle-aged, centrally obese men (age 46 +/- 2 years, body mass index 31.6 +/- 1.0 kg · m(-2), waist circumference 104.6 +/- 2.2 cm) completed two 2-day trials (exercise and control) at least one week apart in a randomized, repeated-measures design. On day 1, participants either cycled for 30 min at approximately 60% of maximal heart rate in the afternoon or rested (no exercise). On day 2 of both trials, after a 10-h overnight fast, participants consumed a test meal of moderate fat content (35%) for breakfast. Capillary blood samples were collected in the fasted state (0 h) and at 2, 4, and 6 h post-prandially on day 2. Total area under the capillary triacylglycerol concentration versus time curve was significantly lower on the exercise than control trial (P = 0.023). One 30-min session of moderate-intensity cycling is effective in lowering post-prandial capillary triacylglycerol concentration in obese middle-aged men. These findings may have important implications for exercise recommendations as a means to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease if such exercise is performed for an extended period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrient determinants of postprandial triglyceride (TG) are matter of debate, especially for type II diabetes. OBJECTIVE This study was performed to evaluate the impact of dietary habits on postprandial TG response in a population-based sample of type II diabetic patients. DESIGN One-hundred and forty type II diabetic patients (63 men/77 women, age 45-70 years) referring to the same health district, not on hypolipidemic drugs and without any other chronic disease, performed four TG profiles (at fasting, before, 2 and 3 h after lunch) with a specific device (Accutrend GCT, Roche Diagnostics Mannheim, Germany) validated previously. Dietary habits were recorded by a dietitian utilizing a previously validated semiquantitative questionnaire. RESULTS Triglyceride values (mmol/l, mean +/- s.d.) were 2.22 +/- 0.93 at fasting, decreased before lunch (2.03 +/- 0.81), reached peak values 3 h after lunch (2.73 +/- 1.11). Postprandial TG increments (3 h after lunch minus pre-lunch concentration) significantly correlated with the intake (g/day) of animal protein (r = 0.20, P < 0.02), total fat (r = 0.21, P < 0.01), animal fat (r = 0.19, P < 0.03) and vegetable fat (r = 0.19, P < 0.03), also after adjusting for fasting TG and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Expressing nutrient intake as percentage of total calorie intake, total and animal fat remained significantly and directly related to postprandial TG increment (r = 0.21, P < 0.01 for total fat; r = 0.19, P < 0.03 for animal fat) whereas the percentage of carbohydrates was inversely related (r = -0.23, P < 0.007). CONCLUSIONS Fat intake seems the major nutritional determinant of postprandial TG response in type II diabetic patients.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between chylomicron composition and expression of genes that regulate chylomicron production in the intestine. We examined expression of the following: (1) Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1), which regulates cholesterol absorption; (2) ATP-binding cassette transporters G5 and G8 (ABCG5, ABCG8), which regulate cholesterol homeostasis through their ability to excrete enterocyte cholesterol back into the lumen of the intestine; and (3) microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTTP), which packages the chylomicron particle by assembling cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipids and apolipoprotein B48. SUBJECTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS Type 2 diabetic (26) and non-diabetic (21) patients were examined. Levels of NPC1L1, ABCG5 and ABCG8 and MTTP mRNA were measured in duodenal biopsies by real-time PCR. Lipoproteins were isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation. RESULTS Diabetic patients had more NPC1L1 mRNA than the control subjects (p<0.02). Expression of ABCG5 and ABCG8 mRNA was lower in the diabetic patients (p<0.05) and MTTP expression was increased (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between NPLC1L1 and MTTP mRNA (p<0.01) and a negative correlation between NPC1L1 and ABCG5 mRNA (p<0.001). Diabetic patients on statin therapy had increased ABCG5 and ABCG8 mRNA compared to those not on statin (p<0.02 and p<0.05) and less MTTP mRNA than those not on statin (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION This study demonstrates that in type 2 diabetes there are important alterations to the expression of intestinal genes that regulate cholesterol absorption and chylomicron synthesis. In diabetic patients statin therapy is associated with reduced MTTP expression and increased ABCG5 and ABCG8 mRNA. The study suggests new mechanisms to explain postprandial diabetic dyslipidaemia and the beneficial effect of statins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guidelines state that accumulated physical activity is beneficial for health, but a minimum duration of 10 min per activity bout is recommended. Limited information regarding the effects of short (< 10 min) bouts of activity on health is available, and no studies of the effects of such short bouts of activity on postprandial lipemia have been conducted. OBJECTIVE The objective was to compare the effects of accumulating ten 3-min bouts of exercise with those of one 30-min bout of exercise on postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. DESIGN Ten men aged 21-32 y completed three 2-d trials > or = 1 wk apart in a randomized repeated-measures design. On day 1, the subjects rested (no exercise) or ran at 70% of maximum oxygen uptake in either ten 3-min bouts (30 min rest between each) or one continuous 30-min bout. On day 2, the subjects rested and consumed test meals (0.69 g fat, 0.95 g carbohydrate, 0.31 g protein, and 46 kJ/kg body mass) for breakfast and lunch. Venous blood samples were obtained in the fasted state and for 7 h postprandially on day 2. RESULTS Postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations were lower throughout day 2 of both the accumulation exercise trial and the continuous exercise trial than during the control trial (main effect of trial: P < 0.001, 2-factor analysis of variance). CONCLUSIONS Accumulating multiple short bouts of exercise throughout the day effectively reduce postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations to an extent similar to that of a single 30-min session of exercise in healthy young men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Primary aim: To evaluate the modulating effects of age and sex on changes in plasma lipid levels in the response to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Secondary aim: To study insulin, leptin, adiponectin, E-selectin and P-selectin levels and their relation to demographics. DESIGN Comparative, longitudinal, open cohort-study. SETTING Tertiary care center at a University Hospital. METHODS Eighty-two consecutive HIV-seropositive patients of either sex were enrolled in the study. Subjects were between 19 and 60 years of age and naive to HAART. Patients were treated with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and protease inhibitor(s) (PIs) or reverse transcriptase inhibitors (RTIs) only. Subjects were evaluated at baseline and after 3, 6 and 12 months. RESULTS Total cholesterol levels increased in all patients. The greatest increase was seen in patients of older age treated with PI. Male gender was another risk factor for higher cholesterol but also for higher triglyceride levels. Therapy with protease inhibitors and/or stavudine had a negative influence on plasma triglyceride levels. Selectins, adipokines and insulin were less influenced by HAART. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this study selection of therapy regimen according to the demographic risk factors sex and age can offer an easy strategy to help to minimize lipid elevations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fasting and postprandial triglyceride (TG) concentrations vary considerably among individuals. TG metabolism is more efficient in women than in men, which may partly explain why females are protected against atherosclerosis. Our aim was to identify gender-specific genetic influences on fasting and postprandial TG concentrations under typical living conditions in healthy, lean, normolipidemic women. METHODS We studied 40 women and 48 men. Diurnal capillary TG profiles were calculated as the integrated area under the capillary TG curve averaged over 3 days. Genotypes of the FABP-2, HL, LPL, APOE, and PPARgamma genes and the APOC-III, APOC-III/A-IV intergenic region were determined. RESULTS Three genes (FABP-2, APOE, and PPARgamma) had a significant additive effect only in women. Mean TG concentrations were fourfold higher in women carriers of the PPARgamma wild-type allele (P = 0.044), threefold higher in carriers of the rare FABP-2 allele (P = 0.006), and fivefold higher in carriers of the E2 allele of the APOE gene (P = 0.037) than in noncarriers. None of these effects was observed in men. The presence of two or more of these adverse alleles increased TG concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. Women carriers of three adverse alleles had postprandial TG values comparable to those for men. CONCLUSIONS An adverse combination of common alleles of the FABP-2, APOE, and PPARgamma genes in women increases their TG concentrations to values comparable to those seen in men. Although this influence is not appreciable when studying fasting plasma TGs, it becomes apparent with use of a more sensitive index such as measurements made throughout the day.
