Abstract
Indirect revascularization is one of the main techniques for the treatment of Moyamoya disease. The formation of good collateral circulation is a key measure to improve cerebral blood perfusion and reduce the risk of secondary stroke, and is the main method for evaluating the effect of indirect revascularization. Therefore, how to predict and promote the formation of collateral circulation before and after surgery is important for improving the success rate of indirect revascularization in Moyamoya disease. Previous studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor, endothelial progenitor cells, Caveolin-1, and other factors observed in patients with Moyamoya disease may play a key role in the generation of collateral vessels after indirect revascularization through endothelial hyperplasia and smooth muscle migration. In addition, mutations in the genetic factor RNF213 have also been associated with this process. This study summarizes the factors and mechanisms influencing collateral circulation formation after indirect revascularization in Moyamoya disease.

Association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and risk of coronary artery disease in the Chinese population: meta-analysis. Herz 2022; 47:553-563. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have investigated the close association between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and the risk of coronary heart disease (CAD) in the Chinese population. However, the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, this meta-analysis was performed to derive a more precise estimate of these associations. METHODS Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the relationship between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and the risk of CAD. Studies were identified by searching the literature for articles published before 2017. RESULTS A total of 39 studies comprising 12,101 individuals (6117 cases and 5984 controls) were included. For the allelic model T vs. C, the pooled OR was 1.43 (95% CI: 1.30-1.57, p < 0.0001); for the recessive model TT vs. CC + TC, the pooled OR was 1.48 (95% CI: 1.29-1.70, p < 0.0001); for the dominant model TT + TC vs. CC, the pooled OR was 1.65 (95% CI: 1.43-1.89, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In the subgroup analysis of high-quality studies, an obvious association was observed between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and CAD risk in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), transcobalaminII (TCN2) and ring finger protein 213 (RNF213) are related to homocysteine (Hcy) level and are of great significance for hypertension. We aimed to evaluate the associations of MTHFR (rs1801133, rs1801131, rs9651118), TCN2 (rs117353193) and RNF213 (rs9916351) with hypertension and blood pressure (BP). A total of 953 patients with hypertension and 1103 controls were enrolled. Genotyping was performed by Taqman. Logistic regression analysis indicated that A allele of TCN2 rs117353193 under the dominant model had a significantly protective effect (P=0.045) after adjustment, which showed that AA+GA genotype has a lower risk than GG. Additionally, the average diastolic BP (DBP) (P=0.044) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) (P=0.035) levels were significantly different between genotypes of RNF213 rs9916351. Further pairwise comparison showed that the average systolic BP (SBP) level of the TT genotype carriers were significantly higher than in CC (P=0.024), and the average DBP and MAP levels of the TT genotype carriers were higher than in CT (P=0.044, P=0.012, respectively) and CC (P=0.048, P=0.010, respectively). In the recessive model, the average SBP (P=0.043), DBP (P=0.018) and MAP (P=0.017) levels with the TT genotype carriers were significantly higher than in CT+CC. Multiple linear regression analysis suggested that RNF213 rs9916351 in the recessive model had significant effects on SBP (P=0.025), DBP (P=0.017) and MAP (P=0.010) as a risk factor. However, no associations were observed between MTHFR and hypertension. TCN2 rs117353193 might serve as a protective factor in hypertension, and RNF213 rs9916351 might be a risk factor that is linked to increase BP level in Northeast Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism with risperidone-induced weight gain. METHODS We analyzed the association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and risperidone-induced weight gain in 356 schizophrenia patients. The patients were treated with risperidone for 8 weeks. The height and body weight of the patients were measured before and 8 weeks after risperidone treatment. Blood DNA was genotyped for MTHFR C677T polymorphisms. RESULTS We found a significant association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and body mass index (BMI) change after 8-week risperidone treatment. The BMI of carriers with different genotypes of MTHFR gene increased over 2-8 weeks. After 8 weeks of risperidone treatment, BMI added value (kg/m2) of CC or CT genotype carriers was significantly higher than that of TT genotype carriers [CC (4.47 ± 1.09), CT (4.54 ± 1.27), TT (2.31 ± 0.75), F = 5.634, P = 0.001]. Based on whether the rate of weight gain from baseline at 8 weeks of treatment exceeded 7%, it was divided into a weight gain group (n = 61) and a non-weight gain group (n = 295). The C allele frequency was significantly different between the two groups (48.4% vs 32.4%, χ2 = 11.342, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION MTHFR C677T polymorphism was associated with risperidone-induced weight gain in Chinese Han population.

Abstract
AIMS Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is known to increase the risk of many diseases. Factors influencing HHcy in healthy and hypertensive subjects remain under-researched. METHODS A large population-based study was conducted in 60 communities from Shenzhen, China. Responses to standardized questions on lifestyle factors and blood samples were collected from all participants after a 12-h overnight fast. Multiple linear and multivariate logistic regressions were used to explore risk factors for HHcy. Results were then compared to those from a systematic review of English-language articles listed in Pubmed, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane libraries that investigated HHcy risk factors in healthy and hypertensive subjects. RESULTS A total of 1586 healthy (Male/Female = 642/944) and 5935 hypertensive subjects (Male/Female = 2928/3007) participated in our population-based study. In logistic regression analyses, age, BMI and creatinine (Cr) were risk factors, while being female, fruit intake and physical activity were protective factors for HHcy in healthy subjects. In hypertensive subjects, seven [age, smoking, salt intake, systolic blood pressure (SBP), uric acid, triglycerides (TG), and Cr] and four [female, fruit intake, total cholesterol (TC), and glucose] factors were associated with higher and lower HHcy respectively. The review of 71 studies revealed that potential risk factors for Hcy included nutritional, physiologic, lifestyle habits, ethnicity, genetics, interactions between gene-environment, gene-gene, gene-nutritional, environment-environment, nutritional-nutritional. CONCLUSION Our study indicates the potential importance of increasing folic acid and vitamin B supplementation, daily fruit and vegetable intake, regular exercise and refraining from tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption as preventive strategies for Hcy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many studies have investigated the role of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) C677T/A1298C polymorphisms in essential hypertension (EH), but results are inconclusive. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to clarify the effects of MTHFR C677T/A1298C polymorphisms on the risk of EH. METHODS Electronic databases were searched to identify relevant studies published until January 2014. Data were extracted by two independent authors. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95%confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the association between MTHFR C677T/A1298C polymorphisms and the risk of EH using random effect models or fixed effect models. Finally,30 studies with 5207 cases and 5383 controls were included for C677T polymorphism and 6 studies with 1009 cases and 994 controls were included for A1298C polymorphism. RESULTS Meta-analysis results indicated that MTHFR C677T polymorphism contributed to an increased risk of EH (for T vs. C: OR=1.30, 95%CI=1.18–1.43; for TT+CT vs. CC: OR=1.34, 95%CI=1.24–1.46; for TT vs. CC: OR=1.62, 95%CI=1.32–1.99; for TT vs. CT+CC: OR=1.41, 95%CI=1.26–1.59). However, no significant association was detected between MTHFR A1298C polymorphism and the risk of EH. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis supports that MTHFR C677T polymorphism plays a role in developing EH. MTHFR A1298C polymorphism may not be associated with an increased risk of EH. Further large and well-designed studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism has been suggested to be associated with increased coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. To explore the relationship between MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism and CAD in the Chinese Han population, a meta-analysis was performed. Fourteen separate studies were included and 2981 subjects were involved in the current meta-analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) between CAD size to CAD size and control size (CAD/CAD + control) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) between the CC and TT genotype groups were estimated by a random-effects model. Meta-regression was performed to explore the heterogeneity source. The CAD/CAD + control values were 0.45 for the CC genotype group and 0.62 for the TT genotype group. The pooled OR for the CAD/CAD + control between the CC and TT genotype groups was 0.55 (95% CI, 0.37-0.83; P(heterogeneity) = .0004, I(2) = 64.7%). These results indicated that MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism and CAD were significantly associated (P = .005) in the Chinese Han population. Publication year was detected as the main heterogeneity source. In a stratified analysis by publication year, the pooled OR was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.37-1.57; P(heterogeneity) = .0002; I(2) = 79.6%) in subgroup 1 (publication years 1999-2004). No significant association between gene polymorphism and CAD was found in this subgroup (P = .46). In subgroup 2 (publication years 2005-2011), the pooled OR was 0.39 (95% CI, 0.28-0.55; P(heterogeneity) = .53; I(2) = 0); and the association between gene polymorphism and CAD was significant (P < .00001). In the Chinese Han population, the TT genotype for the MTHFR C677T gene appeared to be associated with increased CAD risk.

Abstract
AIM Obesity is a chronic disease that is characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat. The physiological changes associated with estrogen deprivation in menopause have a significant impact on total body fat and adipose tissue distribution. Adipocytokines, such as adiponectin and leptin are related to adipose tissue, and their levels are affected by estrogen. The aim of the present study was to investigate the alteration of adipocytokine levels with estrogen therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Aged Wistar albino rats were divided into two main groups: control (C) and ovariectomized (OVX). Six months after ovariectomy, the ovariectomized group was divided into four subgroups: two ovariectomized groups received saline (OVX) and sesame oil (OVX+S.oil), and two groups received physiological dose (OVX+PhyE2) and pharmacological dose (OVX+PharmE2) estrogen (2 and 20µg/kg per day, respectively). Body weight was monitored weekly for 6weeks. Adiponectin, leptin and homocysteine levels were measured from blood samples before and after treatment. RESULTS Body weight increased in OVX, OVX+S.oil and OVX+PhyE2 over 6weeks (P<0.001). Adiponectin levels were significantly decreased in the OVX+S.oil and OVX+PhyE2 groups (P=0.017 and P=0.008, respectively). Leptin level was significantly decreased in the OVX+PharmE2 group (P=0.042). Homocysteine level was decreased in the OVX+S.oil group (P=0.037). CONCLUSION Adipocytokines may play a role in the pathogenesis of cancer or obesity-related complications in menopause. Estrogen therapy may reduce these complications by changing the levels of adipocytokines.
