Iron(II) ion imprinted polymer for Fe(II)/Fe(III) speciation in wine

PVDF-HFP-based polymer inclusion membrane functionalized with D2EHPA for the selective extraction of bismuth(III) from sulfate media

This study is the first application of a PVDF-HFP-based polymer inclusion membrane incorporating the poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the base polymer and extractant for the extraction of bismuth(III), respectively. It is demonstrated that the PIM comprised of 60 wt% PVDF-HFP and 40 wt% D2EHPA is the most effective in the extraction of bismuth(III) from feed solution containing 20 mg L-1 bismuth(III) and 0.2 mol L-1 sulfate adjusted to pH 1.4. The extracted bismuth(III) ions are back-extracted quantitatively to the receiving solution containing 1 mol L-1 sulfuric acid. The stoichiometry experiments reveal that the Bi: D2EHPA ratio in the bismuth(III) extracted complex is 1:6, and D2EHPA is dimer. Moreover, it is shown that the studied PIM has high selectivity in the extraction of bismuth(III) over other interfering ions such as Mo(VI), Cr(III), Al(III), Fe(III), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Mn(II). The interference of Fe(III) is also eliminated by masking with fluoride, leading finally to a nearly pure extraction of bismuth(III).

Polymeric Materials in Speciation Analysis Based on Solid-Phase Extraction

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Development of ion-imprinted polymers for the selective extraction of Cu(II) ions in environmental waters

Several ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) were synthesized via bulk polymerization with Cu(II) as template ion, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinking agent, and azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator in acetonitrile or methanol as porogen solvent. Non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) were similarly synthesized but without Cu(II). After grounding and sieving, the template ions were removed from IIPs particles through several cycles of elimination in 3 M HCl. All NIPs were equally subjected to this acid treatment with the exception of one NIP, called unwashed NIP. The resulting IIP/NIP particles were packed in solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges for characterization. The SPE protocol was designed by optimizing a washing step following the sample percolation to eliminate potential interfering ions prior to the elution of Cu(II), all fractions analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The best IIP showed a high specificity (recovery of Cu(II) vs. interfering ions) and a good selectivity (retention on IIP vs. NIP). Its adsorption capacity was determined to be 63 μg g^-1. Then, a volume of 50 mL was percolated with 30 mg of IIP, thus giving rise to an enrichment factor of 24. Finally, applications to real samples (mineral and sea waters) were successfully performed. In addition, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses showed that the surface area of the washed NIP was almost double that of the unwashed one (140.70 vs. 74.49 m² g^-1), demonstrating for the first time that the post-treatment of a NIP after its synthesis may have a significant impact on its porous structure, and thus need to be more precisely detailed by authors in the future papers.

Ion-Imprinted Polymeric Materials for Selective Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution

The introduction of selective recognition sites toward certain heavy metal ions (HMIs) is a great challenge, which has a major role when the separation of species with similar physicochemical features is considered. In this context, ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) developed based on the principle of molecular imprinting methodology, have emerged as an innovative solution. Recent advances in IIPs have shown that they exhibit higher selectivity coefficients than non-imprinted ones, which could support a large range of environmental applications starting from extraction and monitoring of HMIs to their detection and quantification. This review will emphasize the application of IIPs for selective removal of transition metal ions (including HMIs, precious metal ions, radionuclides, and rare earth metal ions) from aqueous solution by critically analyzing the most relevant literature studies from the last decade. In the first part of this review, the chemical components of IIPs, the main ion-imprinting technologies as well as the characterization methods used to evaluate the binding properties are briefly presented. In the second part, synthesis parameters, adsorption performance, and a descriptive analysis of solid phase extraction of heavy metal ions by various IIPs are provided.

Influence of Synthesis Parameters and Polymerization Methods on the Selective and Adsorptive Performance of Bio-Inspired Ion Imprinted Polymers

Ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) have been widely used in different fields of Analytical Sciences due to their intrinsic selective properties. However, the success of chemical imprinting in terms of selectivity, as well as the stability, specific surface area, and absence of swelling effect depends on fully understanding the preparation process. Therefore, the proposal of this review is to describe the influence of relevant parameters on the production processes of ion-imprinted polymers, including the nature (organic, inorganic, or hybrid materials), structure, properties of the salt (source of the metal ion), ligand, crosslinking agent, porogenic solvent, and initiator. Additionally, different polymerization methods are discussed, the classification of IIPs as well as the applications of these adsorbent materials in the last years (2017–2022).

Magnetic Ion Imprinted Polymers (MIIPs) for Selective Extraction and Preconcentration of Sb(III) from Environmental Matrices

Antimony(III) is a rare element whose chemical and toxicological properties bear a resemblance to those of arsenic. As a result, the presence of Sb(III) in water might have adverse effects on human health and aquatic life. However, Sb(III) exists at very ultra-trace levels which may be difficult for direct quantification. Therefore, there is a need to develop efficient and reliable selective extraction and preconcentration of Sb(III) in water systems. Herein, a selective extraction and preconcentration of trace Sb(III) from environmental samples was achieved using ultrasound assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (UA-MSPE) based on magnetic Sb(III) ion imprinted polymer-Fe3O4@SiO2@CNFs nanocomposite as an adsorbent. The amount of antimony in samples was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The UA-MSPE conditions were investigated using fractional factorial design and response surface methodology based on central composite design. The Sb(III)-IIP sorbent displayed excellent selectivity towards Sb(III) as compared to NIIP adsorbent. Under optimised conditions, the enrichment factor, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of UA-MSPE/ICP-OES for Sb(III) were 71.3, 0.13 µg L-1 and 0.44 µg L-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision expressed as relative standard deviations (%RSDs, n = 10 and n = 5) were 2.4 and 4.7, respectively. The proposed analytical method was applied in the determination of trace Sb(III) in environmental samples. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method was evaluated using spiked recovery experiments and the percentage recoveries ranged from 95-98.3%.

Fe(III)-Complex-Imprinted Polymers for the Green Oxidative Degradation of the Methyl Orange Dye Pollutant

One of the biggest problems worldwide is the pollution of natural water bodies by dyes coming from effluents used in the textile industry. In the quest for novel effluent treatment alternatives, the aim of this work was to immobilize Fe(III) complexes in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to produce efficient Fenton-like heterogeneous catalysts for the green oxidative degradation of the methyl orange (MO) dye pollutant. Different metal complexes bearing commercial and low-cost ligands were assayed and their catalytic activity levels towards the discoloration of MO by H2O2 were assessed. The best candidates were Fe(III)-BMPA (BMPA = di-(2-picolyl)amine) and Fe(III)-NTP (NTP = 3,3',3″-nitrilotripropionic acid), displaying above 70% MO degradation in 3 h. Fe(III)-BMPA caused the oxidative degradation through two first-order stages, related to the formation of BMPA-Fe-OOH and the generation of reactive oxygen species. Only the first of these stages was detected for Fe(III)-NTP. Both complexes were then employed to imprint catalytic cavities into MIPs. The polymers showed catalytic profiles that were highly dependent on the crosslinking agent employed, with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) being the crosslinker that rendered polymers with optimal oxidative performance (>95% conversion). The obtained ion-imprinted polymers constitute cheap and robust solid matrices, with the potential to be coupled to dye-containing effluent treatment systems with synchronous H2O2 injection.

A Critical Review on the Synthesis and Application of Ion-Imprinted Polymers for Selective Preconcentration, Speciation, Removal and Determination of Trace and Essential Metals from Different Matrices

The presence of toxic trace metals and high concentrations of essential elements in the environment presents a serious threat to living organism. Various methods have been used for the detection, preconcentration and remediation of these metals from biological, environmental and food matrices. Owing to the complexicity of samples, methods with high selectivity have been used for detection, preconcentration and remediation of these trace metals. These methods are achieved by the use of ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) due to their impressive properties such as selectivity, high extraction efficiency, speciation capability and reusability. Because of the increase of toxic trace and essential metals in the environment, IIPs have attracted great use in analytical chemistry. This review, provide a brief background on IIPs and polymerization method that are used for their preparation. Recent applications of IIPs as adsorbents for preconcentration, removal, speciation and electrochemical detection of trace and essential metal is also discussed.

Speciation analysis based on digital image colorimetry: Iron (II/III) in white wine

This work proposes an analytical strategy utilizing digital images (DI) for the iron inorganic speciation in white wine. The method was established by the reaction of iron(II) ions with 1,2 ortho-phenanthroline as a chromogenic reagent. Total iron was determined using the same reagent after the addition of hydroxyl ammonium chloride as a reducing agent. In both cases, digital images of the standards/chromogenic reagent and samples were acquired and stored in JPEG format. The region of interest (ROI) was determined with a constant square shape for all images. The ROI was submitted to decomposition in color values according to the RGB additive color model. However, the data obtained by the blue channel was the one used in the construction of the analytical curves because it presented the highest sensitivity. The optimization of the experimental conditions of the procedure was performed by employing multivariate techniques. The precision was evaluated using a wine sample with iron (II) and total iron contents of 0.41 and 0.69 mg L^-1, respectively. The results expressed as relative standard deviations were 3.57% for iron (II) and 4.76% for total iron contents. A comparison between the results obtained for total iron by the DI method with the results found using flame atomic absorption spectrometry confirmed the method accuracy. The DI procedure was applied for speciation analysis in six white wine samples and the contents found varied from 0.41 to 1.67 mg L^-1 for iron (II) and from 0.69 to 1.71 mg L^-1 for total iron. These results are in agreement with those found for speciation analysis of iron in wine samples. Iron (III) contents can be found by the difference between the total iron and iron (II) contents.
