Superparamagnetic enzyme-graphene oxide magnetic nanocomposite as an environmentally friendly biocatalyst: Synthesis and biodegradation of dye using response surface methodology

Recent progress of bacterial cellulose-based separator platform for lithium-ion and lithium‑sulfur batteries

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has recently attracted a lot of attention as a high-performance, low-cost separator substrate for a variety of lithium-ion (LIBs) and lithium‑sulfur batteries (LISs). BC-base can be used in the design and manufacture of separators, mainly because of its unique properties compared to traditional polyethylene/polypropylene separator materials, such as high mechanical properties, high safety, good ionic conductivity, and suitability for a variety of design and manufacturing needs. In this review, we briefly introduce the sources, production methods, and modification strategies of BC, and further describe the preparation methods and properties of BC battery separators for various LIBs and LISs.

Recent applications and future prospects of magnetic biocatalysts

Magnetic biocatalysts combine magnetic properties with the catalytic activity of enzymes, achieving easy recovery and reuse in biotechnological processes. Lipases immobilized by magnetic nanoparticles dominate. This review covers an advanced bibliometric analysis and an overview of the area, elucidating research advances. Using WoS, 34,949 publications were analyzed and refined to 450. The prominent journals, countries, institutions, and authors that published the most were identified. The most cited articles showed research hotspots. The analysis of the themes and keywords identified five clusters and showed that the main field of research is associated with obtaining biofuels derived from different types of sustainable vegetable oils. The overview of magnetic biocatalysts showed that these materials are also employed in biosensors, photothermal therapy, environmental remediation, and medical applications. The industry shows a significant interest, with the number of patents increasing. Future studies should focus on immobilizing new lipases in unique materials with magnetic profiles, aiming to improve the efficiency for various biotechnological applications.

Non-magnetic and magnetically responsive support materials immobilized peroxidases for biocatalytic degradation of emerging dye pollutants-A review

In recent years, the removal of hazardous pollutants from many industries has become a significant challenge for mankind as a growing number of contaminants, including a wide range of organic pollutants, synthetic dyes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), have inevitably led to an increased anthropogenic impact on the biosphere. Due to the complex aromatic structure, most synthetic dyes show resistance to degrade by the classical approaches, such as coagulation, flotation, adsorption, membrane process, and reverse osmosis. Enzyme-assisted biodegradation of pollutants offers an eco-friendlier and cost-effective alternative to remediate dyes, dyes-based effluents, other toxins, etc. Various plant and microbial oxidoreductase (Horseradish and manganese peroxidase) have recently received more attention for degrading and detoxifying a wide range of dyes either by opening the aromatic ring structure or by precipitation due to their high activity under milder conditions, high substrate specificity, and biodegradable nature. To enhance the efficiency, stability and recyclability, enzymes were immobilized on various support media such as sodium alginate, agarose, chitin/chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, macroporous exchange resins, hydrophobic sol-gels, and nanoporous silica gel, including magnetically separatable media. Among various types of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles, such as hematite, magnetite, and maghemite, have gained great attention due to their properties like small size, superparamagnetism, high surface area to volume ratio, and ease of separation for repeated cycles of uses. These carriers can be separated easily and rapidly from the reaction medium by an external magnetic field without being subjected to mechanical stress than centrifugation or filtration. Various methods have been employed for immobilizing oxidoreductase on different media, such as adsorption, covalent binding, entrapment, and encapsulation using different cross-linking agents. Compared to the free enzyme, insolubilized enzymes reduce production costs by enzyme reusability, tolerance to unfavorable environmental conditions, and high catalytic stability. Here, we review various immobilization methods and biocatalytic degradation of emerging dye pollutants, focusing on various non-magnetically and magnetically responsive supports to immobilize peroxidases. Conclusively, magnetically separatable peroxidases show more stability towards extreme temperature and pH conditions and can be used for repeated cycles than free and non-magnetically separatable peroxidase.

Facile immobilization of his-tagged Microbacterial esterase on Ni-SBA-15 with enhanced stability for efficient synthesis of key chiral intermediate of d-biotin

A series of nickel-incorporated SBA-15 mesoporous molecular sieves (Ni-SBA-15) were prepared as support for the immobilization of his-tagged recombinant Microbacterium esterase. The Ni-SBA-15 could strongly and specific absorb the his-tagged esterase from cell disrupted supernatant. It was found that the nickel amount in Ni-SBA-15 has dramatic influence on the activity and thermo-stability of immobilized enzyme, while the kinds of nickel precursor had little effect on enzyme stability. The morphology, chemical composition and structure of the best support NiCl₂-SBA-15 (Ni-SBA-15 prepared from NiCl₂ precursor) were characterized by various spectroscopy techniques. The immobilized esterase retained full activity of free esterase and showed high immobilized yield (> 90%) with higher thermo-stability, pH stability and organic solvent resistance compared with free enzyme. The optimum reaction temperature increased from 35 to 40 °C and the optimal reaction pH moved from 10.0 to 8.0 after enzyme immobilization. The immobilized esterase exhibited excellent storage stability and keeping 92% of the initial activity after 30 days' storage at 25 °C. In addition, the immobilized esterase had excellent reusability for the synthesis of key chiral intermediate of d-biotin and the substrate conversion could still keep 100% after 13 cycles continuously. Finally, optical pure (4S, 5R)-hemiester was obtained in 80.8% isolated yield and 99% purity in the gram preparative scale.

Simulating the synergy of electron donors and different redox mediators on the anaerobic decolorization of azo dyes: Can AQDS-chitosan globules replace the traditional redox mediators?

During anaerobic treatment of azo dye wastewater, the decolorization efficiency is low and dissolved redox mediators (RMs) added to the system are easy lost. In order to solve these issues, immobilized RMs have been a hot area of research. In this study a novel immobilized RM material, disodium anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS)-chitosan globules, which is natural, highly efficient and environmentally friendly, was prepared. Compared with natural immobilized RMs (activated carbon) and dissolved RMs (AQDS), it can be considered that it has a significant strengthening effect on the anaerobic biological degradation and decolorization of azo dye wastewater. An electron donor (ED, glucose) or RM (AQDS solution) was dosed into an anaerobic reactor to determine the enhancing effect and appropriate concentration for the decolorization treatment. The results indicate that a certain concentration of ED or RM [300 mg/L (1.667 mmol/L) glucose or 200 μmol/L AQDS solution] can improve effectively the anaerobic biological degradation and decolorization effect of azo dye wastewater. While by adding both 300 mg/L (1.667 mmol/L) glucose and 300 μmol/L AQDS (the concentrations were the initial reactive concentrations) together the decolorization efficiency was improved further. At the same time, the synergy of ED (glucose) and RM (AQDS solution) on the anaerobic decolorization of azo dye was simulated by the central combination design. A mathematical model for the decolorization efficiency has been established. According to this model, the hydraulic retention time of the best decolorization speed and efficiency has been obtained.

Current Development in Decolorization of Synthetic Dyes by Immobilized Laccases

The world today is in a quest for new means of environmental remediation as the methods currently used are not sufficient to halt the damage. Mostly, a global direction is headed toward a shift from traditional chemical-based methods to a more ecofriendly alternative. In this context, biocatalysis is seen as a cost-effective, energy saving, and clean alternative. It is meant to catalyze degradation of recalcitrant chemicals in an easy, rapid, green, and sustainable manner. One already established application of biocatalysis is the removal of dyes from natural water bodies using enzymes, notably oxidoreductases like laccases, due to their wide range of substrate specificity. In order to boost their catalytic activity, various methods of enhancements have been pursued including immobilization of the enzyme on different support materials. Aside from increased catalysis, immobilized laccases have the advantages of higher stability, better durability against harsh environment conditions, longer half-lives, resistance against protease enzymes, and the ability to be recovered for reuse. This review briefly outlines the current methods used for detoxification and decolorization of dye effluents stressing on the importance of laccases as a revolutionary biocatalytic solution to this environmental problem. This work highlights the significance of laccase immobilization and also points out some of the challenges and opportunities of this technology.

Modeling and optimization by particle swarm embedded neural network for adsorption of methylene blue by jicama peroxidase immobilized on buckypaper/polyvinyl alcohol membrane

Jicama peroxidase (JP) immobilized functionalized Buckypaper/Polyvinyl alcohol (BP/PVA) membrane was synthesized and evaluated as a promising nanobiocomposite membrane for methylene blue (MB) dye removal from aqueous solution. The effects of independent process variables, including pH, agitation speed, initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and contact time on dye removal efficiency were investigated systematically. Both Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network coupled with Particle Swarm Optimization (ANN-PSO) approaches were used for predicting the optimum process parameters to achieve maximum MB dye removal efficiency. The best optimal topology for PSO embedded ANN architecture was found to be 4-6-1. This optimized network provided higher R² values for randomized training, testing and validation data sets, which are 0.944, 0.931 and 0.946 respectively, thus confirming the efficacy of the ANN-PSO model. Compared to RSM, results confirmed that the hybrid ANN-PSO shows superior modeling capability for prediction of MB dye removal. The maximum MB dye removal efficiency of 99.5% was achieved at pH-5.77, 179 rpm, ratio of H₂O₂/MB dye of 73.2:1, within 229 min. Thus, this work demonstrated that JP-immobilized BP/PVA membrane is a promising and feasible alternative for treating industrial effluent.

Biodegradation of Congo red dye in a moving bed biofilm reactor: Performance evaluation and kinetic modeling

The biodegradation of Congo red dye was performed using polyurethane foam-polypropylene immobilized Bacillus sp. MH587030.1 in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The central composite design (CCD) based response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process parameters; pH, Congo red concentration, and media filling ratio, and optimum conditions were observed to be 7.0, 50 mg/L, and 45%, respectively in batch MBBR. At optimum condition, MBBR was operated in continuous mode at different flow rates (25-100 mL/h) over a period of 564 h. The maximum removal efficiency (RE) and elimination capacity (EC) were obtained as 95.7% and 57.6 mg/L·day, respectively under steady-state. The kinetics of Congo red biodegradation at various flow rates were evaluated by a modified Stover-Kincannon model, and kinetic constants; K_B and U_max were found to be 0.253 g/L·day and 0.263 g/L·day, respectively.

Recent development in the application of immobilized oxidative enzymes for bioremediation of hazardous micropollutants - A review

During the past several years, abundant progresses has been made in the development of immobilized oxidative enzymes with focus on finding new support materials, improving the immobilization methods and their applications. Nowadays, immobilized oxidative enzymes are broadly accepted as a green way to face the challenge of high amounts of micropollutants in nature. Among all oxidative enzymes, laccases and horseradish peroxidase were used frequently in recent years as they are general oxidative enzymes with ability to oxidize various types of compounds. Immobilized laccase or horseradish peroxidase are showed better stability, and reusability as well as easy separation from reaction mixture that make them more favorable and economic in compared to free enzymes. However, additional improvements are still essential such as: development of the new materials for immobilization with higher capacity, easy preparation, and cheaper price. Moreover, immobilization methods are still need improving to become more efficient and avoid enzyme wasting during immobilization and enzyme leakage through working cycles.

Bio-Catalysis and Biomedical Perspectives of Magnetic Nanoparticles as Versatile Carriers

In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained increasing attention as versatile carriers because of their unique magnetic properties, biocatalytic functionalities, and capabilities to work at the cellular and molecular level of biological interactions. Moreover, owing to their exceptional functional properties, such as large surface area, large surface-to-volume ratio, and mobility and high mass transference, MNPs have been employed in several applications in different sectors such as supporting matrices for enzymes immobilization and controlled release of drugs in biomedicine. Unlike non-magnetic carriers, MNPs can be easily separated and recovered using an external magnetic field. In addition to their biocompatible microenvironment, the application of MNPs represents a remarkable green chemistry approach. Herein, we focused on state-of-the-art two majorly studied perspectives of MNPs as versatile carriers for (1) matrices for enzymes immobilization, and (2) matrices for controlled drug delivery. Specifically, from the applied perspectives of magnetic nanoparticles, a series of different applications with suitable examples are discussed in detail. The second half is focused on different metal-based magnetic nanoparticles and their exploitation for biomedical purposes.

Laccase Immobilized onto Zirconia⁻Silica Hybrid Doped with Cu2+ as an Effective Biocatalytic System for Decolorization of Dyes

Nowadays, novel and advanced methods are being sought to efficiently remove dyes from wastewaters. These compounds, which mainly originate from the textile industry, may adversely affect the aquatic environment as well as living organisms. Thus, in presented study, the synthesized ZrO₂–SiO₂ and Cu²⁺-doped ZrO₂–SiO₂ oxide materials were used for the first time as supports for laccase immobilization, which was carried out for 1 h, at pH 5 and 25 °C. The materials were thoroughly characterized before and after laccase immobilization with respect to electrokinetic stability, parameters of the porous structure, morphology and type of surface functional groups. Additionally, the immobilization yields were defined, which reached 86% and 94% for ZrO₂–SiO₂–laccase and ZrO₂–SiO₂/Cu²⁺–laccase, respectively. Furthermore, the obtained biocatalytic systems were used for enzymatic decolorization of the Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) dye from model aqueous solutions, under various reaction conditions (time, temperature, pH). The best conditions of the decolorization process (24 h, 30 °C and pH = 4) allowed to achieve the highest decolorization efficiencies of 98% and 90% for ZrO₂–SiO₂–laccase and ZrO₂–SiO₂/Cu²⁺–laccase, respectively. Finally, it was established that the mortality of Artemia salina in solutions after enzymatic decolorization was lower by approx. 20% and 30% for ZrO₂–SiO₂–laccase and ZrO₂–SiO₂/Cu²⁺–laccase, respectively, as compared to the solution before enzymatic treatment, which indicated lower toxicity of the solution. Thus, it should be clearly stated that doping of the oxide support with copper ions positively affects enzyme stability, activity and, in consequence, the removal efficiency of the RBBR dye.

Construction of CLEAs-lipase on magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite: An efficient nanobiocatalyst for biodiesel production

In the present work, cross linked enzyme aggregates of Lipase (CLEAs-lip) was synthesized and immobilized on the magnetic amino functionalized graphene oxide (maGO-CLEAs-lip) nanocomposites. The immobilized lipase showed a broad range of temperature activity about 40-60 °C, as compared to free enzyme. In the case of maGO-CLEAs-lip nanocomposite, the observed lower Km value state 2.25 folds affinity for the p-nitrophenyl palmitate. Enzyme activity of maGO-CLEAs-lip nanocomposite was the highest up to 5 cycles. Storage stability results displayed maGO-CLEAs-lip retained about 75% of its original activity after 30 days of incubation. Remarkably, maGO-CLEAs-lip formed the highest biodiesel construction (78%) from R. communisoil after 24 h of incubation. The biodiesel yield of this nanocomposite was 3.0 folds higher than free enzyme, making it talented as an excellent nanobiocatalyst for efficient production of biodiesel.
