Abstract
BACKGROUND Chlorophenols are routinely determined in aquatic systems to check compliance with the restrictive international legislations set for protection of human and aquatic life. Their control requires affordable analytical methods, particularly in labs at low- and medium-income countries. Liquid chromatography-UV detection is a convenient technique for this purpose, but the availability of suitable sample processing remains pending. Organic solvents are inefficient for extracting the whole range of chlorophenols whereas solid-phase extractions are expensive and labour-intensive. So, an efficient, fast and cheap extraction of chlorophenols, amenable to any lab, would help to cope with their worldwide analytical control in natural waters. RESULTS A supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) was tailored for providing mixed interaction mechanisms aimed at the efficient extraction of chlorophenols prior to LC-UV. The SUPRAS was synthesized from the self-assembly of hexylphosphonic acid under acidic conditions and consisted of sponge-like nanostructures made up of amphiphile and water. The phosphoryl (PO) group was selected as the major driver of the extraction because of its ability to act as halogen and hydrogen bond acceptor for chlorophenols. Additional interactions were hydrogen bonds from O-H amphiphilic groups and the surrounding water, and dispersion and CH-π interactions in the hydrocarbon chains. The number of binding sites in the SUPRAS could be modulated by addition of salt. The SUPRAS formed in situ in the sample, the extraction took 5 min, the concentration factor was around 220, quantification limits (0.1-0.3 μg L-1) were below the EU standards, and the method worked for natural waters. SIGNIFICANCE A fast, low-cost, and organic solvent-free sample processing only requiring conventional lab equipment (stirrers and centrifuges) provided SUPRAS extracts that could be directly analyzed by LC-UV. SUPRAS synthesis occurred spontaneously in the water sample under addition of hexylphosphonic acid and the whole process required low skills. The method meets the analytical and operational performances for the analytical control of chlorophenols in natural waters and it is within the reach of any lab.

Abstract
An amide-based covalent organic framework (COF) was successfully synthesized using the reaction between 1,3,5-trimesoyl chloride and ethylenediamine. The structure and morphology of the COF were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. The COF was employed as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the sampling and preconcentration of chlorophenols from industrial wastewater samples prior to high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The experimental parameters influencing the extraction efficiency including type and volume of eluent solvent, sample solution volume, salt concentration, sample flow rate, and sample solution pH were investigated and optimized using a response surface methodology employing Box-Behnken-design. Under optimized conditions, calibration curves exhibited good linearities over the range of 0.003-10 µg/mL with determination coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.9982 to 0.9999. The method's limits of detection ranged from 0.001 to 0.01 µg/mL. Good repeatability was achieved with relative standard deviations below 4.7%. The developed procedure utilizing the COF adsorbent was successfully applied to determine chlorophenols accurately and precisely in various industrial wastewater samples.

Abstract
In this project, a three-dimensional graphene oxide coated agarose/chitosan (ACGO) porous film was synthesized and utilized as sorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) technique to extract 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as the model analytes in various real samples such as agricultural waste water, honey and tea samples. In addition, deep eutectic solvent made of tetra ethyl ammonium chloride/chlorine chloride was used as a desorption solvent. The effect of various variables, such as: extraction time, stirring rate, solvent desorption volume, desorption time, ionic strength and solution pH on the extraction efficiency of the method was studied and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear range of the method was obtained in the range of 0.1-500μgL-1 for testing analytes (4-chloropheol=0.1-500μgL-1, 2,4-dichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL-1, 3,5-dichlorophenol=0.5-500μgL-1 and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL-1). The obtained correlation coefficients (r2) were between 0.9984 and 0.9994. The limits of detection (LODs) were also calculated between 0.03 - 0.13μgL-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were obtained in the range of 2.8 to 5.9%. The enrichment factor (EFs) values for the studied analytes were also obtained in the range of 33.4-35.8. In addition, the obtained results indicated that the prepared film can potentially be used for more applications in the field of environment, food safety, and drug analysis.

Abstract
In this paper, the role of the halogen bond in capillary monolithic column microextraction was explored for the first time. Benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide (BTH) was synthesized as a functional monomer, N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and divinyl benzene (DVB) were used as cross-linking agents, the hybrid monolithic column of poly (BTH-co-DVB-co-MBA) was prepared using methanol and polyethylene glycol as pore-forming agents and azodiisobutyronitrile as the initiator. Due to the existence of BTH, a large number of nitrogen atoms (Lewis base) were introduced into the monolithic column, which could form a halogen bond with chlorine-containing organic pollutants and enhance its adsorption performance. Based on the monolithic column, a sensitive and environment-friendly solid-phase microextraction technology was studied. The monolithic column was integrated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to extract and detect four kinds of chlorophenol in real water samples. Under best conditions, the method showed excellent extraction ability and linearity, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.9958-0.9987, a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.04-0.23 μg L-1 (S/N = 3), and relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 3.09%. The recovery rate was kept between 87.30% and 123.00%, and the RSD was less than 3.83%, which indicated that the column had powerful capture performance, high precision, and strong anti-matrix interference ability in the real sample, and had potential application value in practical work.

Abstract
Three hydroxyl-functionalized hypercrosslinked polymers (HCP-POL, HCP-HQ and HCP-PG) were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction. The HCP-HQ displayed the largest surface area and highest adsorption capacity for chlorophenols (CPs). Thus, the HCP-HQ was further modified with magnetism to obtain M-HCP-HQ. An efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction method with M-HCP-HQ as adsorbent was developed for the first time to simultaneously extract four CPs from water and honey samples before analysis by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection. Under optimized conditions, the low detection limits (S/N = 3) were obtained to be 0.06-0.10 ng mL-1 for water and 0.80-1.75 ng g-1 for honey. The method recovery was 80.7%-119%, with relative standard deviations below 9.5%. The enrichment factors of the CPs were in the range of 57-220. The extraction mechanism could be attributed to the strong polar interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions between the M-HCP-HQ and CPs. The M-HCP-HQ based method can be served as a reliable and sensitive tool for detection CPs in water and honey samples.

Abstract
In this work, hierarchical ZIF-8 coated anodized aluminum foil was prepared through in situ template-directed method without addition of any zinc salt. The hierarchical sorbent was synthesized by the formation of the final HZIF-8 on the previously created layered double oxide (LDO) template. The LDO template was created by calcining the firstly in situ prepared desired layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor coated on the electrochemically anodized porous Al foil in an air atmosphere. The microextraction ability of the extracting device was studied through direct immersion thin film microextraction (DI-TFME). The extracted analytes were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped by UV detector (HPLC-UV). The present strategy was used for the simultaneous extraction and quantification of four selected chlorophenols (CPs) (as model analyte). The variables of the TFME were optimized using response surface methodology (Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design). Under the obtained optimum condition, the prepared film presented acceptable extraction properties including low limits of detection (0.03-0.22 µgL-1), good linear ranges (0.2-200 µgL-1, r2 > 0.9918) and satisfactory reproducibility (relative standard deviation, 3.6 < RSD < 5.8% for one film as inter- and intra-day RSD, 4.8 < RSD < 5.3% for film to film). Moreover, the obtained enrichment factors were in the range of 56-76. The kinetics and adsorption isotherm of the selected analytes adsorption to the prepared sorbent were also investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities of the selected analytes on the prepared sorbent were in the range of 26.4-80.1 mg g-1. The adsorption isotherm obeyed the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Moreover, the adsorption of the selected chlorophenols on the prepared film followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, the HZIF-8 film was utilized for the quantification of selected CPs in different types of water and wastewater samples. The results showed satisfactory relative recoveries (93-102%) and acceptable precisions (3.6 < RSD < 9.2%).

Abstract
In this work, a polypyrrole (PPy)/TiO2 nanocomposite coating was fabricated by the direct electropolymerization of pyrrole on annealed TiO2 nanoparticles and evaluated as a novel direct immersion solid phase microextraction (DI-SPME) fiber coating for extraction of trace amounts of pollutants in environmental water samples. The functionalized fiber is mechanically and chemically stable, and can be easily prepared in a highly reproducible manner. The effects of the pyrrole monomer concentration, polymerization voltage and polymerization time on the fiber were discussed. Surface morphological and compositional analyses revealed that the composite coating of nano polypyrrole and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) uniformly doped the Ti substrate. The as-fabricated fiber exhibited good extraction capability for phenolic compounds in combination with high performance liquid chromatography-UV detection (HPLC-UV). At the optimum SPME conditions, the calibration curves were linear (R2 ≥ 0.9965). LODs and LOQs of less than 0.026 μg L−1 and 0.09 μg L−1 , respectively, were achieved, and RSDs were in the range 3.5–7.2%. The results obtained in this work suggest that PPy/TiO2 is a promising coating material for future applications of SPME and related sample preparation techniques. A PPy/TiO2 nanocomposite coating was fabricated by direct electropolymerization of pyrrole on annealed TiO2 nanoparticles and evaluated as a novel direct immersion solid phase microextraction fiber coating for the extraction of trace pollutants in water.![]()

Abstract
Priority pollutants chlorophenols are broadly used chemicals that are persistent in the environment and causing serious human health hazards. The current study introduces a novel adsorbent for the extraction of chlorophenols from river water, surface water, and milk by headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography. The adsorbent composite was prepared by blending polycaprolactam (nylon-6) mat and newly synthesized carbon nanotubes decorated with cadmium oxide nanoparticles followed by electrospinning technique to produce based nanofiber. The proposed nanofiber was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The main parameters that affect extraction efficiency, including ionic strength, extraction time, desorption time, and extraction temperature, were investigated and optimized. The linear range was 0.05-5 ng/mL; the limits of detection (signal/noise=3) were 0.02-0.04 ng/mL. The relative recoveries for real samples (river water, surface water, and milk) were in the range of 84-114%.

Abstract
In this study, a graphene oxide/magnetite (GO-Fe3O4) nanocomposite was synthesized and used as a sorbent in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of gingerols from fresh ginger rhizomes, ginger extracts, commercial tea samples, ginger candies, thermogenic supplements, and tonic water. An MSPE method was developed, and the main influencing parameters in the sample preparation process were investigated. After GO-Fe3O4 based MSPE, 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The whole GO-Fe3O4-MSPE-LC-MS/MS method proved high selectivity and consistent analytical confidence. The limits of detection (LOD) ranged between 2 and 3 μg L-1. Intra-day and inter-day RSDs fluctuated between 1.7 - 13.4% and 0.4-10.9%, respectively. Weighted calibration revealed good linearity within the studied range (5-200 μg L-1) and guaranteed appropriate accuracy (relative residues < 25%). MSPE with GO-Fe3O4 demonstrated to be a practical, fast, efficient, high-throughput, and environmental-friendly sample preparation technique for determining of gingerols in commercial products, and its hyphenation with LC-MS/MS analysis yield a valuable analytical tool for the confident quality control of commercial ginger-containing products.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Abstract
A layered porous organic framework (L-POF) with high surface area and porous volume was used as a novel adsorbent for adsorption of chlorophenols (CPs). The L-POF showed much higher adsorption capacity for four CPs (2-CP, 3-CP, 2,3-CP, 2,4-CP) compared with corresponding amorphous POF and some commercial adsorbents. Then, an L-POF-based solid-phase extraction method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for analyzing CPs at the wavelength of 280 nm in water and honey samples was established. Under the optimum conditions, four CPs exhibited good linearity in the range 0.10-80.0 ng mL-1 for water and 2-400 ng g-1 for honey samples with determination coefficient r2 > 0.996. The method has low limits of detection of 0.03-0.10 ng mL-1 for water and 0.5-1.0 ng g-1 for honey samples. The method presented satisfactory precision and accuracy with relative standard deviations ≤ 7.8% and recoveries of 80-115%. High enrichment factors of 123-190 for water and 63-97 for honey were obtained. The validated method was successfully used to determine CPs in water and honey samples. The L-POF also displayed prominent adsorption performance for many other dyes and organic contaminants. This suggests that it can be an ideal candidate as adsorbent for wide application in separation and analysis. Graphical Abstract.
