A new approach for electrochemical detection of organochlorine compound lindane: Development of molecular imprinting polymer with polyoxometalate/carbon nitride nanotubes composite and validation

Two-dimensional layered MoSe2/graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrid coupled with the specific immune-recognition element for rapid detection of endosulfan

Endosulfan (En) is an organochlorine biocide (OCB), that ends up in the environment due to the enzymatic and microsomal activity even though it is not accumulated in living tissue. Endosulfan acts as an organic micro-pollutant which disrupts land as well as aquatic ecosystem. In the present study, we chemically modified endosulfan and conjugated it with a carrier protein to produce an immune response. The generated antibodies were tested for specificity against En, and characterized before further use. Transition Metal Chalcogenides (TMC) showed excellent optoelectrical potential due to its direct bandgap and distinct physical as well as chemical characteristics. Herein, we synthesized a novel nanohybrid using MoSe2 in combination with graphene oxide (GO) and characterized thoroughly. This was similar to graphene-based metal chalcogenides which were further used in this study to fabricate biosensor for the sensitive detection of En. The in-house developed antibodies (En-Ab) were coupled with the nanohybrid to make MoSe2/GO/En-Ab electrode. Fabricated electrode was tested for electrochemical parameters using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Working efficiency of the fabricated electrode i.e., limit of detection (LOD), was found to be 7.45 ppt. In conclusion, we hypothesized that the synthesized TMC nanohybrids could be employed for biosensing of endosulfan, and can likely be developed to test field samples.

Porous polymer magnetic adsorbents for dye wastewater treatment

Dye wastewater discharged from industries has caused serious environmental problems. The recent decade has witnessed adsorption technology emerging as an advanced dye wastewater treatment method with great potential Therefore, we fabricated two kinds of magnetic porous adsorbents (HSF and HSVF) with different specific surface areas and activity sites. Both of which exhibit excellent performance with remarkable dye adsorption capacities, especially HSVF. We further investigated their adsorption kinetic and isotherm in detail. Therein, HSVF showed a nice desorption capacity, and it could be recycled rapidly by magnetism, which exhibited the advantages of effective, easy operation, and low cost. In addition, their adsorption kinetic and isotherm were further studied and compared in detail. The results revealed that introducing strong active sites could improve both the adsorption capacity and rate effectively even though sacrificing part of specific surface areas, indicating that active sites might play a dominant role during the dye adsorption process.

A graphene quantum dots-glassy carbon electrode-based electrochemical sensor for monitoring malathion

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were made via a hydrothermal process with glucose as a precursor undergoing carbonization. Different spectroscopic techniques were used to analyze the optical characteristics of GQDs, including UV-visible, photoluminescence, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the morphological and structural properties of GQDs. An electrochemical sensor was developed by drop casting GQDs on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The sensor detects the organophosphate pesticide malathion in a selective and sensitive manner. Using cyclic voltammetry, the sensor's oxidation-reduction behavior was investigated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted to study the electrochemical properties of the modified the GQDs/GCE working electrode, which showed excellent charge transfer properties. We measured malathion in varying concentrations between 1 to 30 µM using differential pulse voltammetry, which resulted in a limit of detection of 0.62 nM. GQDs can thus be used to develop electrochemical sensors for the detection of pesticides in water.

Synthesis and characterization of Anderson-Evans type polyoxometalates, antibacterial properties

In the present work, the new aluminium-substituted polyoxometalates of the Anderson-Evans type have been prepared and structurally defined by the reaction of aluminium (III) chloride hexahydrate and sodium tungstate dihydrate/sodium molybdate dihydrate in an aqueous basic medium. Elemental analysis, FT-IR, TGA, 1H NMR, and 31P NMR analysis revealed that these polyoxometalates had the following formula: [Ph4P]3[Al(OH)6Mo6O18]·4H2O 1, [Ph4P]3[Al(OH)6W6O18]·4H2O 2, [C7H10N]3[Al(OH)6Mo6O18]·4H2O 3, [C7H10N]3[Al(OH)6W6O18]·4H2O 4. The compounds 1 and 2 show promising antibacterial activity against gram-positive Staphylcoccus aureus ATCC 25923 and gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 bacteria.

Bifunctional 1,2,4-Triazole/12-Tungstophosphoric Acid Composite Nanoparticles for Biodiesel Production

Here, a composite nanoparticle with an acid-base bifunctional structure has been reported for the transesterification of rapeseed oil to produce biodiesel. Triazole-PWA (PWA = 12-tungstophosphoric acid) composite materials with a hexahedral structure are produced using the precipitation method, showing the average particle diameters of 200-800 nm. XPS and FT-IR analyses indicate well-defined chemical bonding of triazole moieties to the PWA. The functionalization and immobilization of PWAs are investigated due to strong interactions with triazole, which significantly improves the thermal stability and even surface area of the heteropoly acid. Furthermore, various ratios of triazole and PWAs are examined using NH₃-TPD and CO₂-TPD to optimize the bi-functionality of acidity and basicity. The prepared nanomaterials are evaluated during the transesterification of rapeseed oil with methanol to analyze the effect of triazole addition to PWAs according to the different ratios. Overall, the bifunctional triazole-PWA composite nanoparticles exhibit higher fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) conversions than pure PWA nanoparticles. The optimized catalyst with a triazole:PWA ratio of 6:1 exhibits the best FAME-conversion performance due to its relatively large surface area, balance of acidity, and strong basicity from the well-designed chemical nano-structure.

Organophosphorus (OPPs) residues in dairy products are a potential threat to human health. To extract trace amounts of OPPs in dairy products, a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was synthesized and combined with OPPs-based molecularly imprinted microspheres (MIM) to create a composite material (MIM/g-C₃N₄). Then, the MIM/g-C₃N₄ was used to prepare a solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge to detect the OPPs in dairy products with UPLC method. The specific surface area of MIM/g-C₃N₄ was 172.208 m²/g, good thermal stability under 300℃, and could reuse up to 15 times. The four OPPs had good linear relationship within the range of 1–10000 ng/mL (r² > 0.999). The limits of detection were 0.7–2.6 ng/mL, and recoveries from blank dairy samples were 86.4 to 95.3 %. In this study, MIM combined with g-C₃N₄ was firstly utilized for the detection of OPPs in dairy products, which indicated it might be an ideal adsorbent for dairy products pretreatment.

Carbendazim imprinted electrochemical sensor based on CdMoO4/g-C3N4 nanocomposite: Application to fruit juice samples

Carbendazim (CAR) as a fungicide is utilized for fruits and vegetables to provide diseases' control and the degradation of carbendazim having benzimidazole ring is slow. Herein, a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on CdMoO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite was prepared for CAR determination in fruit juice samples. Firstly, CdMoO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite with high yield was fabricated via one-pot in-situ hydrothermal approach including environmentally friendly method. Formation of CAR imprinted polymers was performed on CdMoO₄/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in presence of CAR as template and pyrrole (Py) as a monomer by cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. Following the morphological, structural, and optical characterization of as-synthesized nanocomposite, the electrochemical techniques were also implemented to evaluate the electrochemical features of fabricated electrodes. The limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values were calculated as 0.1 × 10^-10 M, and 2.5 × 10^-12 M, respectively in addition to satisfactory selectivity, stability, reproducibility and reusability. The findings revealed that the proposed CAR imprinted electrochemical sensor can be successfully employed in food safety.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

A novel paraoxon imprinted electrochemical sensor based on MoS2NPs@MWCNTs and its application to tap water samples

Organophosphorus pesticides are widely utilized in agricultural fertility. However, their long-term accumulations result in serious damage to human health and ecological balance. Paraoxon (PAR) can block acetylcholinesterase in the human body, resulting in death. Thus, in this study, a molecularly imprinted electrochemical PAR sensor based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/molybdenum disulfide nanoparticles (MoS₂NPs) nanocomposite (MoS₂NPs@MWCNTs) was proposed for selective tap water determination. A hydrothermal fabrication approach was firstly implemented to prepare MoS₂NPs@MWCNTs nanocomposite. Afterwards, the formation of PAR imprinted electrochemical electrode was performed on nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in presence of PAR as template and pyrrole (Py) as a monomer by cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. Just after determining the physicochemical features of as-fabricated nanostructures by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM), the electrochemical behavior of the fabricated sensors was determined through CV, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The suggested imprinted electrode provided the acceptable limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values of 1.0 × 10^-11 M, and 2.0 × 10^-12 M, respectively. As a consequence, the proposed PAR imprinted electrochemical sensor can be offered for the determining safe tap water and its utility.

Polyoxometalate Functionalized Sensors: A Review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a class of metal oxide complexes with a large structural diversity. Effective control of the final chemical and physical properties of POMs could be provided by fine-tuning chemical modifications, such as the inclusion of other metals or non-metal ions. In addition, the nature and type of the counterion can also impact POM properties, like solubility. Besides, POMs may combine with carbon materials as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide or carbon nanotubes to enhance electronic conductivity, with noble metal nanoparticles to increase catalytic and functional sites, be introduced into metal-organic frameworks to increase surface area and expose more active sites, and embedded into conducting polymers. The possibility to design POMs to match properties adequate for specific sensing applications turns them into highly desirable chemicals for sensor sensitive layers. This review intends to provide an overview of POM structures used in sensors (electrochemical, optical, and piezoelectric), highlighting their main functional features. Furthermore, this review aims to summarize the reported applications of POMs in sensors for detecting and determining analytes in different matrices, many of them with biochemical and clinical relevance, along with analytical figures of merit and main virtues and problems of such devices. Special emphasis is given to the stability of POMs sensitive layers, detection limits, selectivity, the pH working range and throughput.

Green synthesis of kudzu vine biochar decorated graphene-like MoSe2 with the oxidase-like activity as intelligent nanozyme sensing platform for hesperetin

It is an urgent need to exploit a potentially green, cost efficient and eco-friendly strategy for the utilization of waste kudzu vine. We developed a one-step green preparation of kudzu vine biochar (BC) decorated graphene-like molybdenum selenide (MoSe₂) with the oxidase-like activity as intelligent nanozyme sensing platform for voltametric detection of hesperetin (HP) in orange peel using the in-situ hydrothermal synthesis method. The structure and properties of MoSe₂-BC was characterized, and found that BC significantly improved electrochemical cycle stability, electronic conductivity, electrochemical active area, and electrocatalytic activity of MoSe₂. The oxidase-like activity of MoSe₂-BC was confirmed by the oxidization of the colorless substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form blue products and the change of absorbance intensity of UV-vis absorption spectra. The MoSe₂-BC exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing performance for the detection of HP in wide linear ranges from 10 nM to 9.5 μM with a low limit of detection of 2 nM using differential pulse voltammetric method. An emerging machine learning technique is used to realize the intelligent sensing of HP, and the performance evaluation of regression analysis was selected to evaluate this technique. This work will provide a guidance for the preparation and application of biochar decorated graphene-like nanomaterials with the oxidase-like activity and the development of intelligent nanozyme sensing platform.

Development and Application of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for the Selective Extraction of Chlordecone from Bovine Serum

The widespread use of chlordecone (CLD), an organochlorine pesticide, until the 1990s to protect banana crops in the French West Indies led to significant pollution of water and soil and, subsequently, of bovine intended for human consumption. Carcasses are submitted to official controls based on perirenal fat CLD determination. In order to allow for pre-slaughter controls, a selective analytical method based on a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) associated to the LC/MS-MS method was developed to determine the level of CLD in bovine serum that can be collected before slaughter. Different synthesis conditions were therefore assayed by varying the nature of the monomer and of the porogen, and the most promising MIP in terms of selective retention for CLD (extraction recovery close to 100%) was completely characterized by solid-phase extraction (repeatability of the extraction procedure, of the synthesis, and of the cartridge filling) in pure medium. The capacity of the MIP was determined at 0.13 µmol g−1 of MIP. After application of a spiked bovine serum sample on the MIP, the selective retention was maintained (87 and 21%, respectively, on the MIP and on the corresponding non-imprinted polymer). Moreover, extraction on the MIP led to a cleaner extract compared to those issued from a conventional C18 sorbent.

Three-dimensional porous reduced graphene oxide decorated with carbon quantum dots and platinum nanoparticles for highly selective determination of azo dye compound tartrazine

In this work, an electrochemical sensor for the azo dye compound tartrazine (TRT) determination was proposed. A screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was modified by depositing three-dimensional porous reduced graphene oxide decorated with carbon quantum dots and platinum nanoparticles (Pt/CQDs@rGO/SPCE). The resulting amount of TRT was observed by differential pulse voltammetry. Under optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited two wide linearities ranging from 0.01 to 1.57 μM and 1.57-9.3 μM with the reliability coefficient of determination of 0.991 and 0.992, respectively. The detection limit (LOD) was also estimated to be 7.93 nM. Moreover, the Pt/CQDs@rGO/SPCE suggested high selectivity in the presence of several interfering agents and azo dye compounds that have a similar structure. Additionally, the Pt/CQDs@rGO/SPCE revealed superior recovery values of about 96.5-101.6% for candy, 99.7-103.5% for soft drinks, 96.0-101.2% for jelly powder, and 98.0-103.0% for water samples. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and repeatability, indicating a great perspective in the monitoring of TRT. Therefore, it can be speculated that the proposed electrode could be effectively applied to determine TRT in food samples.

Impedimetric Sensors for Cyclocreatine Phosphate Determination in Plasma Based on Electropolymerized Poly(o-phenylenediamine) Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Cyclocreatine and its water-soluble derivative, cyclocreatine phosphate (CCrP), are potent cardioprotective drugs. Based on recent animal studies, CCrP, FDA-awarded Orphan Drug Designation, has a promising role in increasing the success rate of patients undergoing heart transplantation surgery by preserving donor hearts during transportation and improving the recovery of transplanted hearts in recipient patients. In addition, CCrP is under investigation as a promising treatment for creatine transporter deficiency, an X-linked inborn error resulting in a poor quality of life for both the patients and the caregiver. A newly designed molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) material was fabricated by the anodic electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine on screen-printed carbon electrodes and was successfully applied as an impedimetric sensor for CCrP determination to dramatically reduce the analysis time during both the clinical trial phases and drug development process. To enhance the overall performance of the proposed sensor, studies were performed to optimize the electropolymerization conditions, incubation time, and pH of the background electrolyte. Scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the behavior of the developed ultrathin MIP membrane. The CCrP-imprinted polymer has a high recognition affinity for the template molecule because of the formation of 3D complementary cavities within the polymer. The developed MIP impedimetric sensor had good linearity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability within the linear concentration range of 1 × 10^-9 to 1 × 10^-7 mol/L, with a low limit of detection down to 2.47 × 10^-10 mol/L. To verify the applicability of the proposed sensor, it was used to quantify CCrP in spiked plasma samples.

Research and Application of Highly Selective Molecular Imprinting Technology in Chiral Separation Analysis

Since residual chiral pollutants in the environment and toxic or ineffective chiral components in drugs can threat human health, there is an urgent need for methods to separation and analyze chiral molecules. Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) is a biomimetic technique for specific recognition of analytes with high potential for application in the field of chiral separation and analysis. However, since MIT has some disadvantages when used for chiral recognition, such as poor rigidity of imprinted materials, a single type of recognition site, and poor stereoselectivity, reducing the interference of conformationally and structurally similar substances to increase the efficiency of chiral recognition is difficult. Therefore, improving the rigidity of imprinted materials, increasing the types of imprinted cavity recognition sites, and constructing an imprinted microenvironment for highly selective chiral recognition are necessary for the accurate identification of chiral substances. In this article, the principle of chiral imprinting recognition is introduced, and various strategies that improve the selectivity of chiral imprinting, using derivative functional monomers, supramolecular compounds, chiral assembly materials, and biomolecules, are reviewed in the past 10 years.

Sensitive and Selective Electrochemical Detection of Epirubicin as Anticancer Drug Based on Nickel Ferrite Decorated with Gold Nanoparticles

The accurate and precise monitoring of epirubicin (EPR), one of the most widely used anticancer drugs, is significant for human and environmental health. In this context, we developed a highly sensitive electrochemical electrode for EPR detection based on nickel ferrite decorated with gold nanoparticles (Au@NiFe₂O₄) on the screen-printed electrode (SPE). Various spectral characteristic methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the surface morphology and structure of the synthesized Au@NiFe₂O₄ nanocomposite. The novel decorated electrode exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity toward the electrooxidation of EPR, and a nanomolar limit of detection (5.3 nM) was estimated using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with linear concentration ranges from 0.01 to 0.7 and 0.7 to 3.6 µM. The stability, selectivity, repeatability reproducibility and reusability, with a very low electrode response detection limit, make it very appropriate for determining trace amounts of EPR in pharmaceutical and clinical preparations.

[Advances in application of molecularly imprinted polymers to the detection of polar pesticide residues]

Polar pesticides can be primarily classified as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides; their rich variety and low cost have led to their extensive utilization in agriculture. However, the overuse of polar pesticides can lead to environmental contamination, such as water or soil pollution, which can also increase the risk of pesticide exposure among human life directly, or indirectly through contact with animal and plant-derived food. There are considerable differences in the physical and chemical properties of polar pesticides, as well as their trace amounts in complex food and environmental samples, posing immense challenges to their accurate detection. As a kind of artificially prepared selective adsorbent, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) possess specific recognition sites complementary to template molecules in terms of the spatial structure, size, and chemical functional groups. With many advantages such as easy preparation, low cost, as well as good chemical and mechanical stability, MIPs have been widely applied in sample pretreatment and the analysis of polar pesticide residues. MIPs are typically used as adsorption materials in solid phase extraction (SPE) methods, including magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE), dispersed solid phase extraction (DSPE), and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). To rapidly detect polar pesticide residues with high sensitivity, MIPs are also used in the preparation of fluorescent sensors and electrochemical sensors. Furthermore, MIPs can be employed as the substrate in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and as the substrate for the ion source in mass spectrometry for polar pesticide residue analysis. Thus far, various molecularly imprinted materials have been reported for the efficient separation and analysis of polar pesticide residues in various complex matrices. However, there is no review that summarizes the recent advances in MIPs for the determination of polar pesticides. This review introduces imprinting strategies and polymerization methods for MIPs, and briefly summarizes some new molecular imprinting strategies and preparation technologies. The application of MIPs in recent years (particularly the last five years) to the detection of polar pesticide residues including neonicotinoids, organophosphorus, triazines, azoles, and urea is then systematically summarized. Finally, the future development direction and trends for MIPs are proposed considering existing challenges, with the aim of providing reference to guide future research on MIPs in the field of polar pesticide residue detection.

Molecularly imprinted polymers-based DNA biosensors

In multiple biological processes, molecular recognition performs an integral role in detecting bio analytes. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are tailored sensing materials that can biomimic the biologic ligands and can detect specific target molecules selectively and sensitively. The formulation of molecularly imprinted polymers is followed by the formulation of a control termed as non-imprinted polymer (NIP), which, in the absence of a template, is commonly formulated to evaluate whether distinctive imprints have been produced for the template. Given the difficulties confronting bioanalytical researchers, it is inevitable that this strategy would come out as a central route of multidisciplinary studies to create extremely promising stable artificial receptors as a replacement or accelerate biological matrices. The ease of synthesis, low cost, capability to 'tailor' recognition element for analyte molecules, and stability under harsh environments make MIPs promising candidates as a recognition tool for biosensing. Compared to biological systems, molecular imprinting techniques have several advantages, including high recognition ability, long-term durability, low cost, and robustness, allowing molecularly imprinted polymers to be employed in drug delivery, biosensor technology, and nanotechnology. Molecular imprinted polymer-based sensors still have certain shortcomings in determining biomacromolecules (nucleic acid, protein, lipids, and carbohydrates), considering the vast volume of the latest literature on biomicromolecules. These potential materials are still required to address a few weaknesses until gaining their position in recognition of biomacromolecules. This review aims to highlight the current progress in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs)-based sensors for the determination of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or nucleobases.

Doxorubicin Anticancer Drug Monitoring by ds-DNA-Based Electrochemical Biosensor in Clinical Samples

In this research, glassy carbon electrode (GCE) amplified with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and ds-DNA was fabricated and utilized for voltammetric sensing of doxorubicin with a low detection limit. In this technique, the reduction in guanine signal of ds-DNA in the presence of doxorubicin (DOX) was chosen as an analytical factor. The molecular docking study revealed that the doxorubicin drug interacted with DNA through intercalation mode, which was in agreement with obtained experimental results. The DOX detection performance of ds-DNA/SWCNTs/GCE was assessed at a concentration range of 1.0 nM-20.0 µM. The detection limit was found to be 0.6 nM that was comparable and even better (in many cases) than that of previous electrochemical reported sensors. In the final step, the ds-DNA/SWCNTs/GCE showed powerful ability for determination of the DOX in injection samples with acceptable recovery data.

An innovative and simple all electrochemical approach to functionalize electrodes with a carbon nanotubes/polypyrrole molecularly imprinted nanocomposite and its application for sulfamethoxazole analysis

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a commonly used antibiotic which accumulation can favor the development of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, easy and cheap system to monitor the presence of SMX are needed for human health protection. Herein we present a straightforward all electrochemical approach to fabricate a sensor based on a nanocomposite molecularly imprinted polymer (nanoMIP) for the determination of SMX. Firstly, oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (oxMWCNTs) were electrochemically deposited on a polarized electrode to increase electrodic surface area up to 350%. Then, ultrathin overoxidized polypyrrole MIP in presence of SMX was electropolymerized on oxMWCNTs surface (nanoMIP). Finally, antibiotic was electrochemically removed. The obtained nanoMIP was characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. The nanoMIP was used for the electrochemical detection of SMX evidencing a lower limit of detection (413 nM) and a wider linear range (1.99-10.88 μM) with respect a non-nanostructured film. The nanoMIP evidenced also good affinity and a highly reproducible response (RSD = 1.2%). The sensor was able to determine SMX in milk samples evidencing good recovery values. The proposed approach can be also used in future to easily prepare different nanoMIP based sensors with improved performances for different target molecules thus overcoming current fabrication limits.

Recognition and selective extraction of poly-γ-glutamic acid based on molecular imprinting technology

Poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) is one of the few bacterial polymers in nature with high added value of biodegradability. Especially, the traditional method of extracting γ-PGA is organic solvent extraction, etc., which has the disadvantages of low extraction rate and serious environmental pollution. With the expansion of γ-PGA industrial fermentation, an efficient and environmentally friendly method is required to be adopted. In this contribution, we report a novel method of separation of γ-PGA from fermentation broth based on molecular imprinting technology. The molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized from chitosan (CS) and glutaraldehyde in the presence of γ-PGA. A nonimprinted polymer (NIP) was also synthesized by the same procedure in the absence of γ-PGA. The chemical structures and morphological structures of both MIP and NIP were examined by FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption isotherms showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of MIP was 137.85 mg/g. The maximum adsorption capacity in the adsorption of NIP was 68.92 mg/g, which indicates that MIP shows specific selectivity for γ-PGA. A high saturated absorption capacity (Qmax=140.90 mg/g) was calculated from Freundlich isotherm equation. The imprinting factor of MIP was 4.76, indicating that MIP possess good recognition ability and selectivity for γ-PGA. The adsorption capacity decreased slightly (17.0%), which suggests the satisfactory reusability of γ-PGA after 5 cycles of reuse. Our study indicates that molecularly imprinted polymers present development prospects in the effective and selective separation of γ-PGA from fermentation broth compared with organic solvent precipitation.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers and dual-emission carbon dots hybrid for ratiometric determination of chloramphenicol in milk

Chloramphenicol (CLP) is a veterinary antibiotic that has been banned due to its severe side effects but it is still illegally used in animal husbandry. In this work, the fabrication of simple, fast-response and highly selective ratiometric probe for sensitive visual detection of CLP antibiotic at trace levels in both indoor and outdoor is reported. For the construction of the ratiometric fluorescence probe (mMIP@YBCDs), two kinds of different carbon dots with yellow emission (Y/CDs, 560 nm) and blue emission carbon dots (B/CDs, 440 nm) were used as target sensitive and as reference dyes respectively. Besides, molecularly imprinted mesoporous silica was used as a recognized part of the probe. Upon the addition of different concentrations of CLP, the fluorescence of Y/CDs was quenched significantly while the fluorescence intensity of B/CDs stayed constant which was accompanied by gradual fluorescence color change from yellow-to-blue. The ratiometric probe has a linear response in the range of 0.1-3 μgL^-1 with a detection limit 0.035 μgL^-1. The practicality of the ratiometric method was validated by the quantification of CLP in milk samples.
