Performance of all ionic liquids as the eco-friendly and sustainable compounds in inhibiting corrosion in various media: A comprehensive review

Experimental and computational studies of novel cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in acid medium

The challenge of corrosion posed as a result of acidic sittings is considered as a major industrial concern, wherein ionic liquids serve as crucial in addressing the corrosive impacts on metals. In this study, five selected cyclic ammonium based ionic liquids were synthesized; IL-1MPyrBr, IL-1MPipBr, IL-2PyBr, IL-3MPyBr and IL-4MPyBr and their chemical structures were characterized using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, IH-NMR, 13C-NMR, Elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Their corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied on carbon steel in 1 M HCl via different concentrations at 298 K using chemical and electrochemical parameters (PDP and EIS). DFT quantum parameters were computed, and the noted results were in complete compatible with the experimental. The synthesized ILs recorded excellent inhibition on the carbon steel corrosion in acidic media with increasing efficiency by increasing the inhibitor concentrations from 20 to 100 ppm. Different cations in the synthesized ILs affect the anti-corrosion effect and IL-3MPyBr showed the highest inhibition (ηR); 96.12% using the lowest concentration. Kinetic and thermodynamic considerations were studied and illustrated.

Temperature Effect on the Corrosion Inhibition of Carbon Steel by Polymeric Ionic Liquids in Acid Medium

In the present research work, the temperature effect on the corrosion inhibition process of API 5L X60 steel in 1 M H2SO4 by employing three vinylimidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) was studied by means of electrochemical techniques, surface analysis and computational simulation. The results revealed that the maximal inhibition efficiency (75%) was achieved by Poly[VIMC4][Im] at 308 K and 175 ppm. The PILs showed Ecorr displacements with respect to the blank from −14 mV to −31 mV, which revealed the behavior of mixed-type corrosion inhibitors (CIs). The steel micrographs, in the presence and absence of PILs, showed less surface damage in the presence of PILs, thus confirming their inhibiting effect. The computational studies of the molecular orbitals and molecular electrostatic potential of the monomers suggested that the formation of a protecting film could be mainly due to the nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms present in each structure.

Advances of Imidazolium Ionic Liquids for the Extraction of Phytochemicals from Plants

In this review, we present the research from 2013 to 2022 about the character of ionic liquids, the categories of phytochemicals, and the reasons for selecting imidazolium ionic liquids for phytochemical extraction. Then we introduce the structural formulae of the imidazolium ionic liquids commonly used in the extraction of phytochemicals, the methods used to prepare imidazolium ionic liquids, and a comprehensive introduction of how imidazolium ionic liquids are applied to extract phytochemicals from plants. Importantly, we discuss the strategies for studying the extraction mechanisms of imidazolium ionic liquids to extract phytochemicals, and the recovery methods regarding imidazolium ionic liquids and their recyclability are analyzed. Then the toxicity in imidazolium ionic liquids is pointed out. Finally, the challenges and prospects of extracting phytochemicals by imidazolium ionic liquids are summarized, and they are expected to provide some references for researchers.

Ionic liquid as an effective green inhibitor for acid corrosion of aluminum composite: experimental and theoretical considerations

Results of anticorrosive performance of ionic liquid 1-methyl-1-propyl-piperidinium bromide (MPPB) on corrosion of 6061Al-10vol% SiC composite (Al-MMC) in 0.05 M HCl solution. Electrochemical techniques were adopted to study corrosion and corrosion inhibition rates. Experiments were conducted in the temperature range of 308–323 K by varying concentrations of MPPB. Conditions were standardized to accomplish maximum inhibition efficiency. Kinetic parameters were evaluated. Results were fitted into various adsorption isotherm models and they fitted best into the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Using data from adsorption isotherms, thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The surface morphology was examined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), atomic force microscope (AFM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). FTIR–spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were performed to reaffirm the adsorption of MPPB. Adsorption of the inhibitor and mechanistic aspects of corrosion inhibition were supported and supplemented by quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory (DFT). The investigation revealed that percentage inhibition efficiency (% IE) improved with the increase in the concentration of MPPB, while it decreased with a rise in temperature. Maximum efficiency of 60% was observed with 400 ppm MPPB at 308 K. MPPB acted as a mixed inhibitor, obeyed the Langmuir adsorption model, and the mode of adsorption was physisorption. Quantum chemical calculations validated the results of the adsorption study.

Adsorption, thermodynamic, and quantum chemical investigations of an ionic liquid that inhibits corrosion of carbon steel in chloride solutions

The purpose of this work lies in the use of ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors due to the difficulty in some oil fields with the solubility of corrosion inhibitors and these materials can be miscible with water and thus provide a solution to such problems in the industry. The second purpose is concerned with the lower toxicity of these compounds compared with the most common corrosion inhibitors. The study covered the corrosion inhibition performance of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethyl sulfonate ([BMIm]TfO) for carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl solutions. The study comprised electrochemical, adsorption, and quantum chemical investigations. The results manifested that [BMIm]TfO can be considered a promising corrosion inhibitor and the inhibition efficacy intensifies as the concentration rises. The observed inhibitive effect can be correlated to the adsorption of the ionic liquid species and the creation of protecting films on the surface. The mode of adsorption follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The polarization results showed that the ionic liquid [BMIm]TfO functions as a mixed inhibitor. Reliance of the corrosion influence on the temperature in the existence and absence of [BMIm]TfO was demonstrated in the temperature range of 303-333 K using polarization data. Activation parameters were determined and discussed. The observed inhibition performance of [BMIm]TfO was correlated with the electronic properties of the ionic liquid using a quantum chemical study.

Advanced Theory and Simulation to Guide the Development of CO2 Capture Solvents

Increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases due to industrial activity have led to concerning levels of global warming. Reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, one of the main contributors to the greenhouse effect, is key to mitigating further warming and its negative effects on the planet. CO₂ capture solvent systems are currently the only available technology deployable at scales commensurate with industrial processes. Nonetheless, designing these solvents for a given application is a daunting task requiring the optimization of both thermodynamic and transport properties. Here, we discuss the use of atomic scale modeling for computing reaction energetics and transport properties of these chemically complex solvents. Theoretical studies have shown that in many cases, one is dealing with a rich ensemble of chemical species in a coupled equilibrium that is often difficult to characterize and quantify by experiment alone. As a result, solvent design is a balancing act between multiple parameters which have optimal zones of effectiveness depending on the operating conditions of the application. Simulation of reaction mechanisms has shown that CO₂ binding and proton transfer reactions create chemical equilibrium between multiple species and that the agglomeration of resulting ions and zwitterions can have profound effects on bulk solvent properties such as viscosity. This is balanced against the solvent systems needing to perform different functions (e.g., CO₂ uptake and release) depending on the thermodynamic conditions (e.g., temperature and pressure swings). The latter constraint imposes a "Goldilocks" range of effective parameters, such as binding enthalpy and pK _a, which need to be tuned at the molecular level. The resulting picture is that solvent development requires an integrated approach where theory and simulation can provide the necessary ingredients to balance competing factors.

Corrosion resistance and antibacterial activity of procyanidin B2 as a novel environment-friendly inhibitor for Q235 steel in 1 M HCl solution

Flavonoids, alkaloids, glucosides and tannins with good corrosion inhibition are the main natural components in plants. In this work, procyanidin B2 (PCB2), a natural flavonoid, was firstly isolated from Uncaria laevigata. Corrosion inhibition, chemical reactivity and adsorption of PCB2 on Q235 carbon steel were described by experimental and theoretical studies. The inhibition performance of PCB2 as a green corrosion inhibitor was evaluated by electrochemical and gravimetric tests. The binding active sites and activities thereof on the steel surface were illustrated by quantum chemistry, and the equilibrium configuration was predicted by molecular dynamics simulation. PCB2 exhibits good corrosion inhibition on Q235 steel over a wide temperature range. The electrochemical results show that PCB2 is a mixed inhibitor, and its inhibition efficiency increases with the addition of PCB2 concentration. Moreover, the protective film is formed on the steel and the active corrosion sites are blocked significantly by surface analysis. Additionally, the theoretical calculation proves a strong interaction between PCB2 molecule and carbon steel. Besides, the antimicrobial activity was also preliminarily studied. This suggests that PCB2 exhibits better antimicrobial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. As a novel green corrosion inhibitor and antimicrobial agent, PCB2 is worthy of further exploitation.
