Gaussian process regression coupled with mRMR to predict adulterant concentration in cocaine

Street cocaine is often mixed with various substances that intensify its harmful effects. This paper proposes a framework to identify attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) intervals that best predict the concentration of adulterants in cocaine samples. Wavelengths are ranked according to their relevance through ReliefF and mRMR feature selection approaches, and an iterative process removes less relevant wavelengths based on the ranking suggested by each approach. Gaussian Process (GP) regression models are constructed after each wavelength removal and the prediction performance is evaluated using RMSE. The subset balancing a low RMSE value and a small percentage of retained wavelengths is chosen. The proposed framework was validated using a dataset consisting of 345 samples of cocaine with different amounts of levamisole, caffeine, phenacetin, and lidocaine. Averaged over the four adulterants, the GP regression coupled with the mRMR retained 1.07 % of the 662 original wavelengths, outperforming PLS and SVR regarding prediction performance.

Miniaturized Near-Infrared spectrophotometers in forensic analytical science - a critical review

The advent of miniaturized NIR instruments, also known as compact, portable, or handheld, is revolutionizing how technology can be employed in forensics. In-field analysis becomes feasible and affordable with these new instruments, and a series of methods has been developed to provide the police and official agents with objective, easy-to-use, tailored, and accurate qualitative and quantitative forensic results. This work discusses the main aspects and presents a comprehensive and critical review of compact NIR spectrophotometers associated with analytical protocols to produce information on forensic matters.

Portable NIR spectroscopy: the route to green analytical chemistry

There is a growing interest for cost-effective and nondestructive analytical techniques in both research and application fields. The growing approach by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRs) pushes to develop handheld devices devoted to be easily applied for in situ determinations. Consequently, portable NIR spectrometers actually result definitively recognized as powerful instruments, able to perform nondestructive, online, or in situ analyses, and useful tools characterized by increasingly smaller size, lower cost, higher robustness, easy-to-use by operator, portable and with ergonomic profile. Chemometrics play a fundamental role to obtain useful and meaningful results from NIR spectra. In this review, portable NIRs applications, published in the period 2019-2022, have been selected to indicate starting references. These publications have been chosen among the many examples of the most recent applications to demonstrate the potential of this analytical approach which, not having the need for extraction processes or any other pre-treatment of the sample under examination, can be considered the "true green analytical chemistry" which allows the analysis where the sample to be characterized is located. In the case of industrial processes or plant or animal samples, it is even possible to follow the variation or evolution of fundamental parameters over time. Publications of specific applications in this field continuously appear in the literature, often in unfamiliar journal or in dedicated special issues. This review aims to give starting references, sometimes not easy to be found.

Phenotypic Analysis of Fourier-Transform Infrared Milk Spectra in Dairy Goats

The infrared spectrum of bovine milk is used to predict many interesting traits, whereas there have been few studies on goat milk in this regard. The objective of this study was to characterize the major sources of variation in the absorbance of the infrared spectrum in caprine milk samples. A total of 657 goats belonging to 6 breeds and reared on 20 farms under traditional and modern dairy systems were milk-sampled once. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra were taken (2 replicates per sample, 1314 spectra), and each spectrum contained absorbance values at 1060 different wavenumbers (5000 to 930 × cm^-1), which were treated as a response variable and analyzed one at a time (i.e., 1060 runs). A mixed model, including the random effects of sample/goat, breed, flock, parity, stage of lactation, and the residual, was used. The pattern and variability of the FTIR spectrum of caprine milk was similar to those of bovine milk. The major sources of variation in the entire spectrum were as follows: sample/goat (33% of the total variance); flock (21%); breed (15%); lactation stage (11%); parity (9%); and the residual unexplained variation (10%). The entire spectrum was segmented into five relatively homogeneous regions. Two of them exhibited very large variations, especially the residual variation. These regions are known to be affected by the absorbance of water, although they also exhibited wide variations in the other sources of variation. The average repeatability of these two regions were 45% and 75%, whereas for the other three regions it was about 99%. The FTIR spectrum of caprine milk could probably be used to predict several traits and to authenticate the origin of goat milk.

How Chemometrics Can Fight Milk Adulteration

Adulteration and fraud are amongst the wrong practices followed nowadays due to the attitude of some people to gain more money or their tendency to mislead consumers. Obviously, the industry follows stringent controls and methodologies in order to protect consumers as well as the origin of the food products, and investment in these technologies is highly critical. In this context, chemometric techniques proved to be very efficient in detecting and even quantifying the number of substances used as adulterants. The extraction of relevant information from different kinds of data is a crucial feature to achieve this aim. However, these techniques are not always used properly. In fact, training is important along with investment in these technologies in order to cope effectively and not only reduce fraud but also advertise the geographical origin of the various food and drink products. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the different chemometric techniques (from clustering to classification and regression applied to several analytical data) along with spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemical sensors, and other on-site detection devices in the battle against milk adulteration. Moreover, the steps which should be followed to develop a chemometric model to face adulteration issues are carefully presented with the required critical discussion.
