Organolanthanide catalyzed regio- and stereoselective dimerization of terminal alkynes and polymerization of aromatic diynes

Organolanthanide Complexes Containing Ln-CH3 σ-bonds: Unexpectedly Similar Hydrolysis Rates for Trivalent and Tetravalent Organocerium

We report the gas-phase preparation, isolation, and reactivity of a series of organolanthanides featuring the Ln-CH3 bond. The complexes are formed by decarboxylating anionic lanthanide acetates to form trivalent [LnIII(CH3)(CH3CO2)3]- (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Tm, Yb, Lu), divalent [EuII(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]-, and the first examples of tetravalent organocerium complexes featuring CeIV-Calkyl σ-bonds: [CeIV(O)(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]- and [CeIV(O)(CH3)(NO3)2]-. Attempts to isolate PrIV-CH3 and TbIV-CH3 were unsuccessful; however, fragmentation patterns reveal that the oxidation of LnIII to a LnIV-oxo-acetate complex is more favorable for Ln = Pr than for Ln = Tb. The rate of Ln-CH3 hydrolysis is a measure of bond stability, and it decreases from LaIII-CH3 to LuIII-CH3, with increasing steric crowding for smaller Ln stabilizing the harder Ln-CH3 bond against hydrolysis. [EuII(CH3)(CH3CO2)2]- engages in a much faster hydrolysis versus LnIII-CH3. The surprising observation of similar hydrolysis rates for CeIV-CH3 and CeIII-CH3 is discussed with respect to sterics, the oxo ligand, and bond covalency in σ-bonded organolanthanides.

Halogen-, oxidant- and directing group-free synthesis of donor-acceptor type conjugated polymers

An intermolecular hydrogen migration from dibutadienylpyridine to dialkynylthiophene catalysed by [Ru(η6-naphthalene)(η4-oxa-bnd)] (oxa-bnd = 9-oxabicyclo[3.3.1]nona-2,6-diene) produces poly(dialkynylthiophene-alt-dibutadienylpyridine). The exact alternating copolymerisation nature is shown by MALDI-TOF MS.

Terminal Alkyne Coupling Reactions Through a Ring: Effect of Ring Size on Rate and Regioselectivity

Terminal alkyne coupling reactions promoted by rhodium(I) complexes of macrocyclic NHC-based pincer ligands-which feature dodecamethylene, tetradecamethylene or hexadecamethylene wingtip linkers viz. [Rh(CNC-n)(C2 H4 )][BArF 4 ] (n=12, 14, 16; ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 )-have been investigated, using the bulky alkynes HC≡CtBu and HC≡CAr' (Ar'=3,5-tBu2 C6 H3 ) as substrates. These stoichiometric reactions proceed with formation of rhodium(III) alkynyl alkenyl derivatives and produce rhodium(I) complexes of conjugated 1,3-enynes by C-C bond reductive elimination through the annulus of the ancillary ligand. The intermediates are formed with orthogonal regioselectivity, with E-alkenyl complexes derived from HC≡CtBu and gem-alkenyl complexes derived from HC≡CAr', and the reductive elimination step is appreciably affected by the ring size of the macrocycle. For the homocoupling of HC≡CtBu, E-tBuC≡CCH=CHtBu is produced via direct reductive elimination from the corresponding rhodium(III) alkynyl E-alkenyl derivatives with increasing efficacy as the ring is expanded. In contrast, direct reductive elimination of Ar'C≡CC(=CH2 )Ar' is encumbered relative to head-to-head coupling of HC≡CAr' and it is only with the largest macrocyclic ligand studied that the two processes are competitive. These results showcase how macrocyclic ligands can be used to interrogate the mechanism and tune the outcome of terminal alkyne coupling reactions, and are discussed with reference to catalytic reactions mediated by the acyclic homologue [Rh(CNC-Me)(C2 H4 )][BArF 4 ] and solvent effects.

Lanthanocene and Cerocene Alkyl Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity Studies

Lanthanocene and cerocene alkyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂) (Ln = La 3 and Ce 4) were obtained from the salt metathesis of {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ₃-κ³-O₃SCF₃)₂K(THF)₂}₂·THF (Ln = La 1·THF and Ce 2·THF) with LiCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂. Reactivity of 3 and 4 toward various small molecules provides access to a series of lanthanide derivatives. For example, reactions of 3 and 4 with elemental chalcogens (sulfur and selenium) in 1:1 molar ratio give the lanthanide thiolates {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ-SCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)}₂ (Ln = La 5 and Ce 6) and selenolates {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(μ-SeCH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)}₂ (Ln = La 7 and Ce 8). The compounds 3 and 4 react with two equivalents of elemental chalcogens (sulfur and selenium) to afford the lanthanide disulfides {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln}₂(μ-η²:η²-S₂) (Ln = La 9 and Ce 10) and diselenides {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln}₂(μ-η²:η²-Se₂) (Ln = La 11 and Ce 12). The lanthanide disulfides (9 and 10) or diselenides (11 and 12) can also be readily obtained through oxidation of the corresponding lanthanide thiolates (5 and 6) or selenolates (7 and 8) by elemental chalcogens concomitant with the (Me₂N-o-C₆H₄CH₂)₂E₂ (E = S or Se) release. Treatment of 3 and 4 with one equivalent or two equivalents of benzonitrile produces the serendipitous lanthanum and cerium-1-azaallyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[N(H)C(Ph)═CHC₆H₄-o-NMe₂] (Ln = La 13 and Ce 14) or amidine complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[N(H)C(Ph)NC(Ph)═CHC₆H₄-o-NMe₂]·C₇H₈ (Ln = La 15·C₇H₈ and Ce 16·C₇H₈), respectively. The compound 15 or 16 can also be readily synthesized by further insertion of one benzonitrile molecule into the 1-azaallyl complex 13 or 14. Insertion of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide or phenyl isothiocyanate into Ln-C bonds within 3 and 4 results in the formation of the amidine complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[CyNC(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)NCy] (Cy = cyclohexyl, Ln = La 17 and Ce 18) or thioamidato complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[SC(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)NPh] (Ln = La 19 and Ce 20). All of the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Stitching Polymerization of 1,5-Hexadiynes and Related Oligoalkynes

A new mode of polymerization, rhodium-catalyzed stitching polymerization, has been developed for the synthesis of π-conjugated polymers with bridged repeating units from nonconjugated 1,5-hexadiynes containing both terminal and internal alkyne moieties as monomers. The polymerization proceeded smoothly with a high degree of stitching efficiency under mild conditions, and 1,5,9-decatriyne and 1,5,9,13-tetradecatetrayne monomers could also be employed. The present polymerization strategy would be particularly beneficial for the synthesis of polymers consisting of a repeating unit that is difficult to prepare as a stable monomer because it does not require the use of a preformed bridged π-conjugated monomer.

Synthesis of (E)-1,4-disilsesquioxylsubstituted but-1-en-3-ynes via platinum-catalyzed dimerization of ethynylsiloxysilsesquioxanes

A new platinum complex bearing bulky N-heterocyclic carbene ligand of the general formula [Pt(IPr*Ph)(dvtms)] (where IPr*Ph = 1,3-bis{2,4,6-tris(diphenylmethyl)phenyl}imidazol-2-ylidene, dvtms = divinyltetramethyldisiloxane) exhibits a high catalytic activity towards E-selective dimerization of ethynyl substituted siloxysilsesquioxanes. This process leads to a novel class of functionalized silsesquioxane derivatives, resembling their dumbbell-shaped silsesquioxane analogues.

Pseudo-tetrahedral Rhodium and Iridium Complexes: Catalytic Synthesis of E-Enynes

The reactions of the rhodium(I) and iridium(I) complexes [M(PhBP₃ )(C₂ H₄ )(NCMe)] (PhBP₃ =PhB(CH₂ PPh₂ )₃ ^- ) with alkynes have resulted in the synthesis of a new family of pseudo-tetrahedral complexes, [M(PhBP₃ )(RC≡CR')] (M=Rh, Ir), which contain the alkyne as a four-electron donor. The reactions of these unusual compounds with two-electron donors (L=PMe₃ , CNtBu) produced a change in the "donicity" of the alkyne from a 4e^- to a 2e^- donor to give five-coordinate complexes. These were the final products with the iridium complexes, whereas further reactions took place with the rhodium complexes. In particular, C(sp)-H bond activation of the alkyne occurred leading to hydrido alkynyl complexes. This process is essential for the further reactivity of the alkynes, and if the alkyne itself was used as reagent, E-enyne complexes were obtained. As a consequence of this chemistry, we show that the complex [Rh(PhBP₃ )(C₂ H₄ )(NCMe)] is a very efficient pre-catalyst for the regioselective di- and trimerization of terminal alkynes to E-enynes and benzene derivatives, respectively. Interestingly, acetonitrile significantly enhanced the catalytic activity by facilitating the C(sp)-H bond activation step. A hydrometalation mechanism to account for these experimental observations is proposed.

Terminal Alkyne Coupling Reactions through a Ring: Mechanistic Insights and Regiochemical Switching

The mechanism and selectivity of terminal alkyne coupling reactions promoted by rhodium(I) complexes of NHC-based CNC pincer ligands have been investigated. Synthetic and kinetic experiments support E- and gem-enyne formation through a common reaction sequence involving hydrometallation and rate-determining C-C bond reductive elimination. The latter is significantly affected by the ligand topology: Employment of a macrocyclic variant enforced exclusive head-to-head coupling, contrasting the high selectivity for head-to-tail coupling observed for the corresponding acyclic pincer ligand.

Carboxylate switch between hydro- and carbopalladation pathways in regiodivergent dimerization of alkynes

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the regiodivergent palladium-catalyzed dimerization of terminal alkynes is presented. Employment of N-heterocyclic carbene-based palladium catalyst in the presence of phosphine ligand allows for highly regio- and stereoselective head-to-head dimerization reaction. Alternatively, addition of carboxylate anion to the reaction mixture triggers selective head-to-tail coupling. Computational studies suggest that reaction proceeds via the hydropalladation pathway favoring head-to-head dimerization under neutral reaction conditions. The origin of the regioselectivity switch can be explained by the dual role of carboxylate anion. Thus, the removal of hydrogen atom by the carboxylate directs reaction from the hydropalladation to the carbopalladation pathway. Additionally, in the presence of the carboxylate anion intermediate, palladium complexes involved in the head-to-tail dimerization display higher stability compared to their analogues for the head-to-head reaction.

Selective synthesis of (Z)-2-enynyl-2-hydroxy-imidazolidine-4,5-diones via Cu(i)-mediated multicomponent coupling of terminal alkynes, carbodiimides and oxalyl chloride

(Z)-2-Enynyl-2-hydroxy-imidazolidine-4,5-diones are synthesized via Cu(i)-mediated (Z)-selective geminal coupling among two terminal alkynes, carbodiimides, and oxalyl chloride. Further transformation is explored.

Pyridine-enhanced head-to-tail dimerization of terminal alkynes by a rhodium-N-heterocyclic-carbene catalyst

A general regioselective rhodium-catalyzed head-to-tail dimerization of terminal alkynes is presented. The presence of a pyridine ligand (py) in a Rh-N-heterocyclic-carbene (NHC) catalytic system not only dramatically switches the chemoselectivity from alkyne cyclotrimerization to dimerization but also enhances the catalytic activity. Several intermediates have been detected in the catalytic process, including the π-alkyne-coordinated Rh(I) species [RhCl(NHC)(η(2)-HC≡CCH2Ph)(py)] (3) and [RhCl(NHC){η(2)-C(tBu)≡C(E)CH=CHtBu}(py)] (4) and the Rh(III)-hydride-alkynyl species [RhClH{-C≡CSi(Me)3}(IPr)(py)2] (5). Computational DFT studies reveal an operational mechanism consisting of sequential alkyne C-H oxidative addition, alkyne insertion, and reductive elimination. A 2,1-hydrometalation of the alkyne is the more favorable pathway in accordance with a head-to-tail selectivity.
