Synthesis and characterization of highly stable superparamagnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as a catalyst for novel synthesis of thiazolo[4,5-b]quinolin-9-one derivatives in aqueous medium

Layered Double Hydroxides: Recent Progress and Promising Perspectives Toward Biomedical Applications

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely studied for biomedical applications due to their excellent properties, such as good biocompatibility, degradability, interlayer ion exchangeability, high loading capacity, pH-responsive release, and large specific surface area. Furthermore, the flexibility in the structural composition and ease of surface modification of LDHs makes it possible to develop specifically functionalized LDHs to meet the needs of different applications. In this review, the recent advances of LDHs for biomedical applications, which include LDH-based drug delivery systems, LDHs for cancer diagnosis and therapy, tissue engineering, coatings, functional membranes, and biosensors, are comprehensively discussed. From these various biomedical research fields, it can be seen that there is great potential and possibility for the use of LDHs in biomedical applications. However, at the same time, it must be recognized that the actual clinical translation of LDHs is still very limited. Therefore, the current limitations of related research on LDHs are discussed by combining limited examples of actual clinical translation with requirements for clinical translation of biomaterials. Finally, an outlook on future research related to LDHs is provided.

Domino Synthesis of Thiazolo-Fused Six- and Seven-Membered Nitrogen Heterocycles via Intramolecular Heteroannulation of In-Situ-Generated 2-(Het)aryl-4-amino-5-functionalized Thiazoles

Synthesis of novel 2-(het)aryl-substituted thiazolo-fused six- and seven-membered heterocycles, such as thiazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-5(4H)-ones, thiazolo[4,5-c]isoquinolin-5(4H)-ones, thiazolo[4,5-b]quinolin-9(4H)-ones, 4H-benzo[e]thiazolo[4,5-b]azepine-5,10-diones, have been developed in a single-pot operation via intramolecular heteroannulation of in-situ-generated 2-(het)aryl-4-amino-5-functionalized thiazoles. These 4-amino-5-functionalized thiazoles were readily obtained in a one-pot process by treatment of a range of (het)aryldithioesters with cyanamide in the presence of NaH, followed by in situ S-alkylation-intramolecular condensations of the resulting thioimidate salts with appropriate activated methylene halides. On the other hand, the corresponding 4H-benzo[b]thiazolo[4,5-e][1,4]diazepin-10(9H)-ones were synthesized in a two-step process, requiring prior isolation of 5-carboethoxy-4-(2-nitrophenyl)aminothiazoles and their subsequent reductive cyclization. The activated methylene halides employed in these reactions for the synthesis of various thiazolo-fused heterocycles were methyl bromocrotonate, ethyl 2-(bromomethyl)benzoate, 2-fluorophenacyl bromides, ethyl 2-(2-bromoacetyl)benzoate, and ethyl bromoacetate. Several of these thiazolo-fused heterocycles display yellow green to green fluorescence, and their absorption and emission spectra have also been examined.

Lignin from Agro-Industrial Waste to an Efficient Magnetic Adsorbent for Hazardous Crystal Violet Removal

The presence of cationic dyes, even in a tiny amount, is harmful to aquatic life and pollutes the environment. Therefore, it is essential to remove these hazardous dyes to protect the life of marine creatures from these pollutants. In this research, crystal violet (CV) dye elimination was performed using a lignin copper ferrite (LCF) adsorbent. The adsorbent was synthesized and characterized using FTIR, Raman, SEM, EDX with mapping, and VSM, which proved the successful formation of magnetic LCF. Adsorption experiments were performed using different effective parameters. The highest adsorption potential (97%) was executed at mild operating conditions, with a 5 min contact time at room temperature and pH 8. The adsorption kinetic study utilized four kinetic models: first-order, second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich. The results revealed that the adsorption process complies with the pseudo-first-order with a maximum adsorption capacity of 34.129 mg/g, proving that the adsorption process mechanism is a physical adsorption process. Three isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin, were examined. The adsorption mechanism of CV onto LCF was also followed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The thermodynamic parameters were examined and revealed that the adsorption onto LCF was an exothermic process. It was proposed that the adsorption process is a spontaneous exothermic process. LCF appears to forcefully remove toxic CV dye from textile wastewater.

Synthesis and Toxicological Effect of Some New Pyrrole Derivatives as Prospective Insecticidal Agents against the Cotton Leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval)

Herein, a series of biologically active pyrrole derivatives, namely 2-[(3-cyano-5-aryl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)thio]acetic acids 2a-c, 2-[(2-hydroxyethyl)-thio]-5-aryl-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitriles 3a-c, and 2-[(2-amino-ethyl)thio]-5-aryl-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitriles 4a-c, 2,2'-disulfanediylbis(5-aryl-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitriles) 5a-c, 2-((3-cyano-5-aryl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)thio)acetates 6a-c, 2-[(3-cyano-5-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)thio]acetohydrazides 7a-c, and 2-{2-[(3-cyano-5-aryl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)thio]acetyl}-N-phenyl-hydrazinecarbothioamides 8a-c, as insecticidal agents, were synthesized via adaptable, smoothly accessible 2-(2-oxo-2-arylylethyl)malononitriles 1a-c. The structures were proved using infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and mass spectrum (MS) techniques. Under laboratory conditions, the toxicological characteristics were tested towards Spodoptera littoralis, cotton leafworm insect type. In respect to the LC₅₀ values, compounds 6a, 7a, 8c, and 3c possess the highest insecticidal bioefficacy, with values of 0.5707, 0.1306, 0.9442, and 5.883 ppm, respectively. The study paves the way towards discovering new materials for potential use as insecticidal active agents.

Development of New Thiazole Complexes as Powerful Catalysts for Synthesis of Pyrazole-4-Carbonitrile Derivatives under Ultrasonic Irradiation Condition Supported by DFT Studies

In this study, we are interested in preparing Fe(III), Pd(II), and Cu(II) complexes from new thiazole derivatives. All syntheses were elaborately elucidated to estimate their molecular and structural formulae, which agreed with those of mononuclear complexes. The square-planer geometry of Pd(II) complex (MATYPd) was the starting point for its use as a heterocatalyst in preparing pyrazole-4-carbonitrile derivatives 4a-o using ultrasonic irradiation through a facile one-pot reaction. The simple operation, short-time reaction (20 min), and high efficiency (97%) were the special advantages of this protocol. Furthermore, this green synthesis strategy was advanced by examination of the reusability of the catalyst in four consecutive cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity. The new synthesis strategy presented remarkable advantages in terms of safety, simplicity, stability, mild conditions, short reaction time, excellent yields, and use of a H₂O solvent. This catalytic protocol was confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) study, which reflected the specific characteristics of such a complex. Logical mechanisms have been suggested for the successfully exerted essential physical parameters that confirmed the superiority of the Pd(II) complex in the catalytic role. Optical band gap, electrophilicity, and electronegativity features, which are essential parameters for the catalytic behavior of the Pd(II) complex, are based mainly on the unsaturated valence shell of Pd(II).

Unveiling the exceptional synergism-induced design of Co-Mg-Al layered triple hydroxides (LTHs) for boosting catalytic activity toward the green synthesis of indol-3-yl derivatives under mild conditions

The current study provides a novel insight into the role of synergism of the changes in Mg²⁺/ Al³⁺ in the best catalytic activity of indol-3-yl derivatives. A series of Co-Mg-Al layered triple hydroxides (LTHs) catalysts were produced by altering the Al³⁺/Mg²⁺ ratio with respect to Co²⁺. The physicochemical properties of LTHs were well characterized by ICP-AES, XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, BET, Zeta-sizer, and VSM. The results show that the sample CMA4 (Co²⁺:Mg²⁺:Al³⁺ 2:4:4) is an exception to the physicochemical characteristics of the produced Co-Mg-Al LTHs, which is due to the synergism between the changes in Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the synthesis of indol-3-yl derivatives from indole-3-carbaldehyde using Co-Mg-Al LTHs as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts, which is an extremely appealing path. The selectivity of the synthesis was studied by condensing various nucleophiles through the one-pot method that established superior reactivity under mild conditions. Notably, the results show that the Co-Mg-Al LTHs system exhibited an extraordinarily catalytic activity, with the highest yield (98%) being obtained under the following optimal conditions: the concentration of Co-Mg-Al LTHs = 5 mol%, 30 min., water/ethanol as solvent. Furthermore, the reusable studies exhibited that the catalysts were found to be stable and reusable for up to six cycles without substantial loss of catalytic activity. Finally, a plausible reaction mechanism of the Co-Mg-Al LTHs system for indol-3-yl derivatives was put forward according to our comprehensive analysis. Our work illuminates a cheap and flexible strategy for the synthesis of indol-3-yl derivatives using Co-Mg-Al LTHs.

A Promising Platform of Magnetic Nanofluid and Ultrasonic Treatment for Cancer Hyperthermia Therapy: In Vitro and in Vivo Study

Localized hyperthermia is a very promising cancer therapy approach especially when stimulated by the exceptional properties of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). This approach is a highly site-specific method for localized heating of bodily tissue without any harmful side effects that could revolutionize the practice of cancer therapy. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the cancer cell-destroying capability of MNPs in combination with ultrasound treatment as an innovative sonomagnetic cancer therapy. Magnetic nanofluids (MNFs) were synthesized by co-precipitation/sonochemical techniques in an aqueous medium without any surfactant and/or capping agent. The physicochemical characteristics of the prepared MNFs were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared and vibrating sample magnetometry. The MNFs was used as a mediator and sonosensitizer to destroy tumor tissue when irradiated by ultrasound waves. The antitumor efficiency of MNFs in combination with pulsed ultrasound (1.5 W/cm², 1 MHz) was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. In vitro efficacy was estimated by determining the cell viability of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells. For in vivo experiments, female mice were inoculated subcutaneously with Ehrlich carcinoma cells to establish solid Ehrlich carcinoma. The cytotoxic concentration of MNFs (400 µg/mL) was injected intratumorally and exposed to pulsed ultrasound (1.5 W/cm², 1 MHz). The cytotoxic effect was determined in terms of tumor growth rate, apoptosis and necrosis. Our results revealed that MNFs in the presence of pulsed ultrasound cause a significant increase in the cytotoxicity effect on tumor cells. This study illustrates the high efficiency of cancer therapy as assisted by both ultrasound and magnetic nanofluid.

Engineered N-doped graphene quantum dots/CoFe2O4 spherical composites as a robust and retrievable catalyst: fabrication, characterization, and catalytic performance investigation in microwave-assisted synthesis of quinoline-3-carbonitrile derivatives

Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs), which are less than 10 nm in size, are an interesting member of the nanocarbon materials family. N-GQDs nanostructures have been broadly applied in various fields, such as drug-gene delivery systems, photocatalytic reactions, and catalysts, owing to their unique properties. However, N-GQDs have rarely been introduced as a catalyst in organic synthesis. Herein, CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites with diverse morphologies are fabricated in various conditions (e.g. green routes, various pH adjusters, temperatures). Due to further active sites on the surface of the nanocomposites, morphology engineering can be effective in catalytic activities. Following the synthesis, the catalytic activity of the engineered CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites was screened, and it presented the order of spherical > rod > prism > cubic. The uniform spherical morphology provides more accessible active sites. Then, the novel nano-sized N-GQDs/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic spherical composite was readily fabricated by a green, low-cost, and easy hydrothermal route. The engineered composite was applied as an efficient magnetic nanocatalyst for the MW-assisted one-pot synthesis of new and known quinoline-3-carbonitrile derivatives (83–96%) in the shortest reaction time (60–90 s). Furthermore, the green route, easy separation of the nanocatalyst, and reusability (7 runs) without noticeable loss of catalytic efficiency are other advantages.

Sustainable fabrication of spherical N-GQDs/CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposites as a novel magnetically retrievable catalyst for the synthesis of quinoline-3-carbonitrile derivatives has been developed.

A decennary update on applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocyclic scaffolds

Heterocycles have been found to be of much importance as several nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycle compounds exist amongst the various USFDA-approved drugs. Because of the advancement of nanotechnology, nanocatalysis has found abundant applications in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Numerous nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized for several organic transformations, which led us to make dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds reported from 2010 to 2019. Our emphasize during the coverage of catalyzed reactions of the various MNPs such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Si, Ti, and Zn has not only been on nanoparticles catalyzed synthetic transformations for the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds, but also provide an inherent framework for the reader to select a suitable catalytic system of interest for the synthesis of desired heterocyclic scaffold.

New Activated Carbon from Mine Coal for Adsorption of Dye in Simulated Water or Multiple Heavy Metals in Real Wastewater

Nano-activated carbon (NAC) prepared from El-Maghara mine coal were modified with nitric acid solution. Their physico-chemical properties were investigated in terms of methylene blue (MB) adsorption, FTIR, and metal adsorption. Upon oxidation of the AC_S with nitric acid, surface oxide groups were observed in the FTIR spectra by absorption peaks at 1750–1250 cm⁻¹. The optimum processes parameters include HNO₃/AC ratio (wt./wt.) of 20, oxidation time of 2 h, and the concentration of HNO₃ of 10% reaching the maximum adsorption capacity of MB dye. Also, the prepared NAC was characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, Raman Spectroscopy, and BET analyses. The batch adsorption of MB dye from solution was used for monitoring the behavior of the most proper produced NAC. Equilibrium isotherms of MB dye adsorption on NAC materials were acquired and the results discussed in relation to their surface chemistry. Langmuir model recorded the best interpretation of the dye adsorption data. Also, NAC was evaluated for simultaneous adsorption of six different metal ions (Fe²⁺, Ni²⁺, Mn²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Zn²⁺) that represented contaminates in petrochemical industrial wastewater. The results indicated that the extracted NAC from El-Maghara mine coal is considered as an efficient low-cost adsorbent material for remediation in both basic dyes and metal ions from the polluted solutions.

Kinetics, Isotherm, Thermodynamics, and Recyclability of Exfoliated Graphene-Decorated MnFe2O4 Nanocomposite Towards Congo Red Dye

Herein, we described the use of exfoliated graphene- (EG-) decorated magnetic MnFe2O4 nanocomposite (EG@MnFe2O4) for the removal and adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye from wastewater. Firstly, the precursors (EG, MnFe2O4) and EG@MnFe2O4 were fabricated, characterized using several physical analytical techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2adsorption/desorption isotherm measurement. For the adsorption experiments, the effect of contact time (0–240 min), concentration (10–60 mg/L), solution pH (2–10), adsorbent dosage (0.03–0.07 g), and temperature (283–313 K) was rigorously studied. To elucidate the adsorption mechanism and behaviour of CR over EG@MnFe2O4 and MnFe2O4 adsorbents, the kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and Bangham) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich) have been adopted. The kinetic results indicated that models adhered to the pseudo-second-order equation, exhibiting the chemisorption mechanism in heterogeneous phrase. Meanwhile, the isotherm results revealed the adsorption of CR over EG@MnFe2O4 obeyed the monolayer behaviour (Langmuir model) rather than multilayer behaviour (Freundlich equation) over MnFe2O4. The thermodynamic study also suggested that such adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. With high maximum adsorption capacity (71.79 mg/g) and good recyclability (at least 4 times), EG@MnFe2O4 can be a potential alternative for the adsorptive removal of CR dye from water.

Green recipes to quinoline: A review

The quinoline core possesses a vast number of biological activities such as anticancer, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antitubercular and antileishmanial. The conventional classical synthetic methods require the use of expensive and harsh conditions such as high temperature. Currently the scientific communities are searching new methodology to eliminate the use of chemicals, solvents and catalysts, which are hazardous to human health as well as to environment. This review provides a concise overview of new dimensions of green chemistry approaches in designing quinoline scaffold that would encourage the researchers towards green chemistry as well as future application of these greener, non-toxic, environment friendly methods in designing quinoline scaffold.

Green synthesis of graphene from recycled PET bottle wastes for use in the adsorption of dyes in aqueous solution

Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) is an important component of post-consumer plastic waste. This study focuses on the potential of utilizing "waste-treats-waste" by synthesis of graphene using PET bottle waste as a source material. The synthesized graphene is characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, Raman, TGA, and FT-IR. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and acid blue 25 (AB25) by graphene is studied and parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage were optimized. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is applied to investigate the effect of three variables (dye concentration, time and temperature) and their interaction on the removal efficiency. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm are followed a pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that adsorption of dye is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The plastic waste can be used after transformation into valuable carbon-based nanomaterials for use in the adsorption of organic contaminants from aqueous solution.

Comparative performance of anodic oxidation and electrocoagulation as clean processes for electrocatalytic degradation of diazo dye Acid Brown 14 in aqueous medium

In this study, a laboratory scale for the treatment of a recalcitrant and toxic synthetic wastewater containing diazo dye, acid brown 14 (AB-14) has been comparatively performed by two electro-catalytic treatment processes, namely anodic oxidation (AO) and electrocoagulation (EC) using a new batch electrochemical cell. Additionally, the influence of several operating parameters such as; current density (j), initial dye concentration (C_o), NaCl concentration (C_N), and pH on the color removal efficiency and chemical oxygen demand (COD) are evaluated. The powerful capability of the AO and EC of AB-14 which related to the mechanistic reaction pathway is shown. The poor degradation is ascribed to higher C_o and pH, while the enhancement of j and C_N is responsible for better degradation of AB-14 dye. The results indicate that the EC is more effective than AO under the same operational condition. A kinetic model is developed for evaluation of the pseudo-first-order-rate constant (k_app) as a function of various operational parameters. The results emphasize the high efficiency of AO and EC and the clean processes which are hopeful alternative for the treatment of the large volume wastewater of the textile industry.

Management of agricultural waste for removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution: adsorption behaviors, adsorption mechanisms, environmental protection, and techno-economic analysis

In the last decades, Egypt has been suffering from the phenomenon of black cloud resulting from burning rice husk and increasing the demand for water leading to the water crisis. An alternative, low-value and surplus agricultural byproduct (rice husk, RH) has an enormous potential for the removal of Cu(II) ions from water. The present study focuses on the chance of the use of rice husk as a bio-adsorbent without any chemical treatment instead of burning it and soiling the environment. The elemental, structural, morphological, surface functional, thermal, and textural characteristics of RH are determined by XRF, XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and BET surface area, respectively, and contributed to the understanding of the adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution. Also, the performance analysis, adsorption mechanism, influencing factors, favorable conditions, etc. are discussed in this article. The results obtained from optimization by batch mode are achieved under the following conditions: initial concentration, 150 ppm; amount of rice husk, 1 g; average particle size, 0.25 mm; temperature, 25 °C; pH, 4; agitation rate, 180 rpm; and contact time, 60 min. RH exhibits a high degree of selectivity for Cu(II) adsorption. The adsorption isotherm is fitted well with Langmuir and Freundlich models with R ² 0.998 and 0.997, respectively. The adsorption is well governed by the pseudo-second-order kinetics. It is observed that the rate of adsorption improves with decreasing temperature, and the process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. Particular attention has being paid to factors as production processes, fixed/operational cost, production cost, and profit. The techno-economical analysis is presented in this study that provides precise demands on capital for a fixed investment, provisions for operational capital, and finally provisions for revenue. The social, economical, and environmental benefits by industrial point of view using low-cost adsorbent are also discussed.
