Abstract
Novel basified graphene oxide and high-porosity monolithic composite aerogels of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) containing basified graphene oxide (b-eGO) have been prepared as recoverable and reusable catalysts for the Henry reaction in solvent-free conditions at room temperature. The results showed that, although b-eGO was able to promote the reaction, it suffered from reduced stability. On the other hand, PPO/b-eGO aerogels were able to efficiently promote the Henry reaction in solvent-free conditions. The product could be obtained pure without a purification step, and the catalyst was stable for over 15 months and could be easily recycled without losing catalytic efficiency. The stereochemical outcome was further investigated in the presence of PPO/b-eGO. Despite its negligible influence on diastereoselectivity, better efficiency and a sensible reduction of reaction time were observed.

Abstract
Abstract
During the past several decades, metal-based catalysis is one of the major and direct approaches for the synthesis of organic molecules. Nowadays, materials containing predominantly carbon element which are termed as carbocatalysts, become the most promising area of research to replace transition metal catalysts. In this context of carbocatalysis, the use of graphene oxide (GO) and GO-based materials are under spotlight due to their sustainability, environmental benignity and large scale-availability. The presence of oxygen containing functional groups in GO makes it benign oxidant and slightly acidic catalyst. This chapter provides a broad discussion on graphene oxide (GO) as well as its preparation, properties and vast area of application. The catalytic activity of GO has been explored in different organic transformations and it has been recognized as an oxidation catalyst for various organic reactions.

Abstract
This study reports on an easy and scalable synthesis method of a novel magnetic nanocomposite (GO/ZIF-8/γ-AlOOH) based on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets decorated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), pseudo-boehmite (γ-AlOOH), and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles by combining solvothermal and solid-state dispersion (SSD) methods. The nanocomposite was successfully applied to remove of diclofenac sodium (DCF) - a widely used pharmaceutical - from water. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the adsorption process and assess the interactions among the influencing factors on DCF removal efficiency; including contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial pH, solution temperature, and DCF concentration. Adsorption isotherm results showed a good fitting with the Langmuir isotherm model with an exceptional adsorption capacity value of 2594 mg g-1 at 30 °C, which was highly superior to the previously reported adsorbents. In addition, kinetic and thermodynamic investigations further illustrated that the adsorption process was fast (equilibrium time = 50 min) and endothermic. The regeneration of GO/ZIF-8/γ-AlOOH nanocomposite using acetic acid solution (10% v/v) after a simple magnetic separation was confirmed in five consecutive cycles, which eliminate the usage of organic solvents. The nanocomposite has also shown a superior performance in treating a simulated hospital effluent that contained various pharmaceuticals as well as other organic, and inorganic constituents.

Abstract
Chirality has become an important research subject. The research areas associated with chirality are under substantial development. Meanwhile, graphene is a rapidly growing star material and has hard-wired into diverse disciplines. Rational combination of graphene and chirality undoubtedly creates unprecedented functional materials and may also lead to great findings. This hypothesis has been clearly justified by the sizable number of studies. Unfortunately, there has not been any previous review paper summarizing the scattered studies and advancements on this topic so far. This overview paper attempts to review the progress made in chiral materials developed from graphene and their derivatives, with the hope of providing a systemic knowledge about the construction of chiral graphenes and chiral applications thereof. Recently emerging directions, existing challenges, and future perspectives are also presented. It is hoped this paper will arouse more interest and promote further faster progress in these significant research areas.

Abstract
High-porosity monolithic composite aerogels of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) containing reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) were prepared and characterized. The composite aerogels obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction of sPS/r-GO and PPO/r-GO gels were characterized by a fibrillar morphology, which ensured good handling properties. The polymer nanoporous crystalline phases obtained within the aerogels led to high surface areas with values up to 440 m2 g−1. The role of r-GO in aerogels was studied in terms of catalytic activity by exploring the oxidation capacity of composite PPO and sPS aerogels toward benzyl alcohol in diluted aqueous solutions. The results showed that, unlike sPS/r-GO aerogels, PPO/r-GO aerogels were capable of absorbing benzyl alcohol from the diluted solutions, and that oxidation of c.a. 50% of the sorbed benzyl alcohol molecules into benzoic acid occurred.

Abstract
Organic transformations are usually catalyzed by metal-based catalysts. In contrast, metal-free catalysts have attracted considerable attention from the viewpoint of sustainability and safety. Among the studies in metal-free catalysis, graphene-based materials have been introduced in the reactions that are usually catalyzed by transition metal catalysts. This review covers the literature (up to the beginning of April 2020) on the use of graphene and its derivatives as carbocatalysts for C-C bond-forming reactions, which are one of the fundamental reactions in organic syntheses. Besides, mechanistic studies are included for the rational understanding of the catalysis. Graphene has significant potential in the field of metal-free catalysis because of the fine-tunable potential of the structure, high stability and durability, and no metal contamination, making it a next-generation candidate material in catalysis.

Abstract
The principle of vinylogy states that the electronic effects of a functional group in a molecule are possibly transmitted to a distal position through interposed conjugated multiple bonds. As an emblematic case, the nucleophilic character of a π-extended enolate-type chain system may be relayed from the legitimate α-site to the vinylogous γ, ε, ..., ω remote carbon sites along the chain, provided that suitable HOMO-raising strategies are adopted to transform the unsaturated pronucleophilic precursors into the reactive polyenolate species. On the other hand, when "unnatural" carbonyl ipso-sites are activated as nucleophiles (umpolung), vinylogation extends the nucleophilic character to "unnatural" β, δ, ... remote sites. Merging the principle of vinylogy with activation modalities and concepts such as iminium ion/enamine organocatalysis, NHC-organocatalysis, cooperative organo/metal catalysis, bifunctional organocatalysis, dicyanoalkylidene activation, and organocascade reactions represents an impressive step forward for all vinylogous transformations. This review article celebrates this evolutionary progress, by collecting, comparing, and critically describing the achievements made over the nine year period 2010-2018, in the generation of vinylogous enolate-type donor substrates and their use in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Metal-free carbon porous materials (CPMs) have gained the intensive attention of scientists and technologists because of their potential applications, ranging from catalysis to energy storage. Various simple and facile strategies are proposed for the preparation of CPMs with well-controlled sizes, shapes, and modifications on the surface. The extraordinary tenability of the pore structure, the environmental acceptability, the unique surface and the corrosion resistance properties allow them to be suitable materials for a large panel of catalysis applications. This review briefly outlines the different signs of progresses made towards synthesizing CPMs, and their properties, including catalytic efficiency, stability, and recyclability. Finally, we make a comparison of their catalytic performances with other nanocomposites, and we provide an outlook on the expected developments in the relevant research works.

Abstract
The graphene oxide (GO) assisted allylic alkylation of thiophenes with alcohols is presented. Mild reaction conditions and a low GO loading enabled the isolation of a range of densely functionalized thienyl and bithienyl compounds in moderate to high yields (up to 90%). The cooperative action of the Brønsted acidity, epoxide moieties, and π-surface of the 2D-promoter is highlighted as crucial in the reaction course of the present Friedel-Crafts-type protocol.

Abstract
A metal-free procedure for oxidation of carbon black (CB), under mild and ecofriendly conditions, is described. The procedure, based on 5/1 w/w H2O2/H2SO4, when applied to high-surface-area CB, leads to oxidation contents (O/C = 0.66) comparable to those obtained for graphite with the more aggressive and metal-based Hummers method (O/C 0.63). Oxidized nanocarbons are able to activate transesterification reactions under solvent-free conditions. Activation of transesterification reactions is much more effective by oxidized CB than by graphene oxide.

Abstract
This article compares the catalytic activities of oxidized carbon black (oCB) and graphene oxide (eGO) samples on the kinetics of a reaction of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with a diamine, leading to crosslinked insoluble networks. The study is mainly conducted by rheometry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Following the same oxidation procedure, CB samples are more efficiently oxidized than graphite samples. For instance, CB and graphite samples with high specific surface areas (151 and 308 m²/g), as oxidized by the Hummers' method, exhibit O/C wt/wt ratios of 0.91 and 0.62, respectively. Due to the higher oxidation levels, these oCB samples exhibit a higher catalytic activity toward the curing of epoxy resins than fully exfoliated graphene oxide.
