Advances in morphology-controlled alumina and its supported Pd catalysts: synthesis and applications

Alumina materials, as one of the cornerstones of the modern chemical industry, possess physical and chemical properties that include excellent mechanical strength and structure stability, which also make them highly suitable as catalyst supports. Alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts with the advantages of exceptional catalytic performance, flexible regulated surface metal/acid sites, and good regeneration ability have been widely used in many traditional chemical industry fields and have also shown great application prospects in emerging fields. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in alumina and its supported Pd-based catalysts. Specifically, the synthesis strategies, morphology transformation mechanisms, and structural properties of alumina with various morphologies are comprehensively summarized and discussed in-depth. Then, the preparation approaches of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts (impregnation, precipitation, and other emerging methods), as well as the metal-support interactions (MSIs), are revisited. Moreover, Some promising applications have been chosen as representative reactions in fine chemicals, environmental purification, and sustainable development fields to highlight the universal functionality of the alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts. The role of the Pd species, alumina support, promoters, and metal-support interactions in the enhancement of catalytic performance are also discussed. Finally, some challenges and upcoming opportunities in the academic and industrial application of the alumina and its supported Pd-based are presented and put forward.

Stable Performance of Supported PdOx Catalyst on Mesoporous Silica-Alumina of Water Tolerance for Methane Combustion under Wet Conditions

In methane combustion, water tolerance of Pd-based catalysts is quite critical for stable performance, because water is produced in situ and a water-containing feed is used under real conditions. Herein, water-tolerant mesoporous silica-alumina (H-MSA) was prepared by solvent deficient precipitation (SDP) using triethoxy(octyl)silane (TEOOS) and aluminum isopropoxide (AIP). The H-MSA was more tolerant to water than γ-alumina, mesoporous alumina (MA), and mesoporous silica-alumina (MSA) synthesized by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), because of the silica present on the external particle surface. Moreover, it exhibited better textural properties, leading to higher dispersion of PdOx. The PdOx catalyst supported on H-MSA was quite durable in repeated temperature-programmed cycles and isothermal tests in the presence of water vapor, compared to the reference PdOx catalysts. The measured stability was attributed to the water tolerance, weak Lewis acidity, and penta-coordinated Al species of the H-MSA support, which was preferentially imparted when TEOOS was added for substitution of 5 mol% AIP for the synthesis of H-MSA. Therefore, the SDP method employed herein is useful in endowing supported PdOx catalysts with the water tolerance necessary for stable methane combustion performance under wet conditions.

Effects of chlorinated Pd precursors and preparation methods on properties and activity of Pd/TiO2 catalysts

We investigated the effects of Pd precursors and preparation methods on the physicochemical properties and performance of Pd/TiO₂ catalysts in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl violet. To confirm the influence of the precursors, Pd/TiO₂ catalysts were prepared via chemical reduction (CR) using four different Pd precursors. Additionally, to determine the effects of preparation methods, Pd/TiO₂ catalysts were fabricated using K₂PdCl₄ precursor via three different methods: CR, deposition-precipitation (DP), and impregnation. The CO chemisorption results showed that the catalyst prepared via DP using the K₂PdCl₄ precursor, i.e., Pd/TiO₂_K_DP, displayed the highest Pd dispersion of 12.42% owing to the stable formation of Pd(OH)₂, which strongly interacted with the -OH groups on the TiO₂ support. Although the catalyst prepared via CR using the Pd(NH₃)₄Cl₂·H₂O (PA) precursor, i.e., Pd/TiO₂_PA_CR, had the lowest Pd dispersion of 0.7%, it exhibited the highest absorption of 26% after 30 min in the dark. It was found that high Pd²⁺/Pd⁰ ratio in dark conditions adversely affected the absorption of MV owing to electrostatic repulsion between the cationic dyes and metal nanoparticles. However, the Pd dispersion and the specific surface area played a key role in the photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation. Pd/TiO₂_K_CR with higher Pd dispersion showed the highest photocatalytic activity and reaction rate of 0.0212 min^-1.

Ni-Pd/γ-Al2O3 Catalysts in the Hydrogenation of Levulinic Acid and Hydroxymethylfurfural towards Value Added Chemicals

γ-Al2O3 supported Ni-Pd catalysts with different Ni:Pd ratios were studied in the hydrogenation of two industrially-relevant platform molecules derived from biomass, namely levulinic acid and hydroxymethylfurfural. The bimetallic catalysts showed better performances in both processes in comparison to the monometallic counterparts, for which a too strong interaction with the alumina support reduced the activity. The behavior of the bimetallic catalysts was dependent on the Ni:Pd ratio, and interestingly also on the targeted hydrogenation reaction. The Pd-modified Ni-rich system behaves like pure Ni catalyst, but with a strongly boosted activity due to a higher number of Ni active sites available, Pd being considered as a spectator. This high activity was manifested in the levulinic acid hydrogenation with formic acid used as an internal hydrogen source. This behavior differs from the case of the Pd-rich system modified by Ni, which displayed a much higher Pd dispersion on the support compared to the monometallic Pd catalyst. The higher availability of the Pd active sites while maintaining a high surface acidity allows the catalyst to push the HMF hydrodeoxygenation reaction forward towards the green biopolymer precursor 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydrofuran, and in consequence to strongly modify the selectivity of the reaction. In that case, residual chlorine was proposed to play a significant role, while Ni was considered as a spectator.

Dehydrogenation of 2-[(n-Methylcyclohexyl)Methyl]Piperidine over Mesoporous Pd-Al2O3 Catalysts Prepared by Solvent Deficient Precipitation: Influence of Calcination Conditions

A pair of 2-[(n-methylcyclohexyl)methyl]piperidine (H12-MBP) and its full dehydrogenation product (H0-MBP) has recently been considered as a potential liquid organic hydrogen carrier with 6.15 wt% H2 storage capacity. In the discovery of an active and stable catalyst for H2 discharge from H12-MBP at lower temperatures, a mesoporous Pd-Al2O3 catalyst (MPdA) was synthesized by a one-pot solvent deficient precipitation (SDP). In the present work, the sensitivity and effectiveness of the SDP method are examined by varying the calcination temperature and time in the preparation of the MPdA catalyst. The characterization revealed that the final properties of the MPdA catalyst greatly rely on both the calcination temperature and time. The MPdA catalyst showed better dehydrogenation activity for calcination at 600 °C than at other temperatures, because of Pd particles of smaller size with higher dispersion. Although the MPdA catalysts calcined at 600 °C for different periods of time have similar size and dispersion of Pd particles, the dehydrogenation efficiency was superior as the calcination time became shorter (e.g., 1 h), which originated from the better arrangement of Pd particles over a higher surface area. These MPdA catalysts, irrespective of the calcination time, displayed a remarkable stability in the dehydrogenation of H12-MBP owing to the protection of Pd particles by the Al2O3 layer.

Hydrocarbon Synthesis via Photoenzymatic Decarboxylation of Carboxylic Acids

A recently discovered photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvFAP) bears the promise for the efficient and selective synthesis of hydrocarbons from carboxylic acids. CvFAP, however, exhibits a clear preference for long-chain fatty acids thereby limiting its broad applicability. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the decoy molecule approach enables conversion of a broad range of carboxylic acids by filling up the vacant substrate access channel of the photodecarboxylase. These results not only demonstrate a practical application of a unique, photoactivated enzyme but also pave the way to selective production of short-chain alkanes from waste carboxylic acids under mild reaction conditions.

Environmentally benign selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and reduction of aromatic nitro compounds using Cu based bimetallic nanoparticles supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes and mesoporous carbon
