Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The surface-active ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate ([BMIm][AOT]), has a sponge-like bulk nanostructure consisting of percolating polar and apolar domains formed by the ion charge groups and alkyl chains, respectively. We hypothesise that added water will swell the polar domains and change the liquid nanostructure. EXPERIMENTS Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) were used to investigate the nanostructure of [BMIm][AOT] as a function of water content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed to probe the thermal transitions of [BMIm][AOT]-water mixtures and the mobility of water molecules. FINDINGS SAXS, SANS and POM show that at lower water contents, [BMIm][AOT]-water mixtures have a sponge-like nanostructure similar to the pure SAIL, at medium water contents a lamellar phase forms, and at high water contents vesicles form. DSC results reveal that water molecules are supercooled in the lamellar phase. For the first time, results reveal a series of transitions from inverse sponge, to lamellar then to vesicles, for [BMIm][AOT] upon dilution with water.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of US on the properties of the fluconazole emulsions prepared using imidazolium-based ILs ([Cn C1im]Br). The effects of the preparation method (mechanical stirring or US), US amplitude, alkyl chain length (of [C12C1im]Br or [C16C1im]Br), and IL concentration on the physicochemical properties were evaluated. Properties such as droplet size, span index, morphology, viscosity encapsulation efficiency, and drug release profile were determined. The results showed that US-prepared emulsions had a smaller droplet size and smaller polydispersity (Span) than those prepared by mechanical stirring. Additionally, the results showed that emulsions prepared with [C16C1im]Br and US had spherical shapes and increased stability compared to emulsions prepared by MS, and also depended on the IL concentration. The emulsion prepared by US at 40% amplitude had increased encapsulation efficiency. US provided a decrease in the viscosity of emulsions containing [C12C1im]Br; however, in general, all emulsions had viscosity close to that of water. Emulsions containing [C16C1im]Br had the lowest viscosities of all the emulsions. The emulsions containing the IL [C16C1im]Br had more controlled release and a lower cumulative percentage of drug release. The IL concentration required to prepare these emulsions was lower than the amount of conventional surfactant required, which highlights the potential synergic effects of ILs and US in preparing emulsions of hydrophobic drugs.

Abstract
The impetus for the expanding interest in ionic liquids (ILs) is their favorable properties and important applications. Ionic liquid-based surfactants (ILBSs) carry long-chain hydrophobic tails. Two or more molecules of ILBSs can be joined by covalent bonds leading, e.g., to gemini compounds (GILBSs). This review article focuses on aspects of the chemistry and applications of ILBSs and GILBSs, especially in the last ten years. Data on their adsorption at the interface and micelle formation are relevant for the applications of these surfactants. Therefore, we collected data for 152 ILBSs and 11 biamphiphilic compounds. The head ions of ILBSs are usually heterocyclic (imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, etc.). Most of these head-ions are also present in the reported 53 GILBSs. Where possible, we correlate the adsorption/micellar properties of the surfactants with their molecular structures, in particular, the number of carbon atoms present in the hydrocarbon "tail". The use of ILBSs as templates for the fabrication of mesoporous nanoparticles enables better control of particle porosity and size, hence increasing their usefulness. ILs and ILBSs form thermodynamically stable water/oil and oil/water microemulsions. These were employed as templates for (radical) polymerization reactions, where the monomer is the "oil" component. The formed polymer nanoparticles can be further stabilized against aggregation by using a functionalized ILBS that is co-polymerized with the monomers. In addition to updating the literature on the subject, we hope that this review highlights the versatility and hence the potential applications of these classes of surfactants in several fields, including synthesis, catalysis, polymers, decontamination, and drug delivery.

Abstract
Protic ionic liquids (PILs) are the largest and most tailorable known class of non-aqueous solvents which possess the ability to support amphiphile self-assembly. However, little is known about the effect of solvent additives on this ability. In this study, the lyotropic liquid crystal phase (LLCP) behavior of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was investigated in the model PILs of ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and ethanolammonium nitrate (EtAN), and derived multi-component solvent systems containing them to determine phase formation and diversity with changing solvent composition. The solvent systems were composed of water, nitric acid and ethylamine (or ethanolamine), with 26 unique compositions for each PIL covering the apparent pH and ionicity ranges of 0-13.5 and 0-11 M, respectively. The LLCPs were studied using cross polarized optical microscopy (CPOM) and small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). Partial phase diagrams were constructed for CTAB concentrations of 50 wt% and 70 wt% in the temperature range of 25 °C to 75 °C to characterise the effect of surfactant concentration and temperature on the LLCPs in each solvent environment. Normal micellar (L1), hexagonal (H1) and bicontinuous cubic (V1) phases were identified at both surfactant concentrations, and from temperatures as low as 35 °C, with large variations dependent on the solvent composition. The thermal stability and diversity of phases were greater and broader in solvent compositions with excess precursor amines present compared to those in the neat PILs. In acid-rich solvent combinations, the same phase diversity was found, though with reduced onset temperatures of phase formation; however, some structural changes were observed which were attributed to oxidation/decomposition of CTAB in a nitric acid environment. This study showed that the ability of PIL solutions to support amphiphile self-assembly can readily be tuned, and that the ability of PILs to promote amphiphile self-assembly is robust, even with other solvent species present.

Abstract
Abstract
Protic ionic liquids with nitrate anions were used as solvents and catalysts for a three-component oxidative dehydrogenation tandem reaction via the coupling and hydroarylation of benzaldehyde, aniline, and phenylacetylene to a quinoline derivative. The reaction was supported by air and microwave irradiation. The presence of nitrate as counter anion in the protic ionic liquids was essential for the reaction.

Abstract
Ionic-liquid (IL) mixtures hold great promise, as they allow liquids with a wide range of properties to be formed by mixing two common components rather than by synthesizing a large array of pure ILs with different chemical structures. In addition, these mixtures can exhibit a range of properties and structural organization that depend on their composition, which opens up new possibilities for the composition-dependent control of IL properties for particular applications. However, the fundamental properties, structure, and dynamics of IL mixtures are currently poorly understood, which limits their more widespread application. This article presents the first comprehensive investigation into the bulk and surface properties of IL mixtures formed from two commonly encountered ILs: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2mim][Tf2N] and [C12mim][Tf2N]). Physical property measurements (viscosity, conductivity, and density) reveal that these IL mixtures are not well described by simple mixing laws, implying that their structure and dynamics are strongly composition dependent. Small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering measurements, alongside molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, show that at low mole fractions of [C12mim][Tf2N], the bulk of the IL is composed of small aggregates of [C12mim]+ ions in a [C2mim][Tf2N] matrix, which is driven by nanosegregation of the long alkyl chains and the polar parts of the IL. As the proportion of [C12mim][Tf2N] in the mixtures increases, the size and number of aggregates increases until the C12 alkyl chains percolate through the system and a bicontinuous network of polar and nonpolar domains is formed. Reactive atom scattering-laser-induced fluorescence experiments, also supported by MD simulations, have been used to probe the surface structure of these mixtures. It is found that the vacuum-IL interface is enriched significantly in C12 alkyl chains, even in mixtures low in the long-chain component. These data show, in contrast to previous suggestions, that the [C12mim]+ ion is surface active in this binary IL mixture. However, the surface does not become saturated in C12 chains as its proportion in the mixtures increases and remains unsaturated in pure [C12mim][Tf2N].

Abstract
Micelles formed by the long-chain piperidinium ionic liquids (ILs) N-alkyl-N-methylpiperidinium bromide of general formula CnPDB (n = 12, 14, 16) in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) were investigated through surface tension and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Through surface tension measurements, the critical micelle concentration (cmc), the effectiveness of surface tension reduction (Πcmc), the maximum excess surface concentration (Гmax) and the minimum area occupied per surfactant molecule (Amin) can be obtained. A series of thermodynamic parameters (DG0 m, DH0 m and DS0 m) of micellization can be calculated and the results showed that the micellization was entropy-driven. In addition, the DPD simulation was performed to simulate the whole aggregation process behavior to better reveal the micelle formation process.

Abstract
Supercritical (sc) CO2 and ionic liquids (ILs) are very attractive green solvents with tunable properties. Using scCO2 and ILs as alternatives of conventional solvents (water and oil) for forming amphiphile self-assemblies has many advantages. For example, the properties and structures of the amphiphile self-assemblies in these solvents can be easily modulated by tuning the properties of solvents; scCO2 has excellent solvation power and mass-transfer characteristics; ILs can dissolve both organic and inorganic substances and their properties are designable to satisfy the requirements of various applications. Therefore, the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs have attracted considerable attention in recent years. This review describes the advances of using scCO2 or/and ILs as amphiphile self-assembly media in the last decade. The amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are first reviewed, followed by the discussion on combination of scCO2 and ILs in creating microemulsions or emulsions. Some future directions on the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are highlighted.

Abstract
The ability of ionic liquids (ILs) to support amphiphile self-assembly into a range of mesophase structures has been established as a widespread phenomenon. From the ILs evaluated as self-assembly media, the vast majority have supported some lyotropic liquid crystal phase formation. Many neat ionic liquids have been shown to segregate into polar and non-polar domains to form a nanostructured liquid. A very strong correlation between the nanostructure of the ionic liquid and its characteristics as an amphiphile self-assembly solvent has been found. In this review we discuss ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media, and identify trends that can be used to distinguish which ionic liquids are likely to have good promotion properties as self-assembly media. In particular these trends focus on the nanostructure of neat ionic liquids, their solvent cohesive energy density, and the related solvophobic effect. We forecast that many more ILs will be identified as amphiphile self-assembly solvents in the future.

Abstract
The ternary system composed of the ionic liquid surfactant (IL-S) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate ([Bmim][DodSO4]), the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([Emim][EtSO4]), and toluene has been investigated. Three major mechanisms guiding the structure of the isotropic phase were identified by means of conductometric experiments, which have been correlated to the presence of oil-in-IL, bicontinuous, and IL-in-oil microemulsions. IL-S forms micelles in toluene, which swell by adding RTIL as to be shown by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. Therefore, it is possible to form water-free IL-in-oil reverse microemulsions ≤10 nm in size as a new type of nanoreactor.

Abstract
Abstract
The interfacial composition, thermodynamic properties and structure parameters of the W/O microemulsion systems containing alkyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide (CnmimBr, n = 12, 14, 16)/1-pentanol/n-octane/aqueous NaCl (HCl or NaOH) have been studied by a dilution method.
The molar solubility of 1-pentanol in oil phase (Xo
a) and the molar fraction of 1-pentanol at the interfacial layer (Xi
a) were obtained from the dilution equation of the W/O microemulsions. Furthermore, the distribution constant K of 1-pentanol between the interfacial layer and the bulk oil phase was determined, along with the standard Gibbs’ free energy change of transferring alcohol from the continuous oil phase to the interfacial layer, –ΔGo
o→i. Some structure parameters related to the microemulsion droplets were also calculated.
The effects of NaCl, HCl and NaOH on the properties and structures of the W/O microemulsions were also explored. It was found that as the content of the aqueous NaCl (HCl and NaOH) increases, Xo
a and Xi
a would decrease, the formation of the microemulsion would be more thermodynamically spontaneous, and the radius of the water pool significantly increases.

Abstract
Simple ionic liquids have long been held to be designer solvents, based upon the ability to independently vary their cations and anions. The formation of mixtures of ionic liquids increases this synthetic flexibility. We review the available literature of these ionic liquid mixtures to identify how their properties change and the possibility for their application.

Abstract
Biamphiphilic ionic liquids (BAILs) based on 1,3-dialkylimidazolium cation and alkyl sulfate anions ([C(n)H(2n+1)mim][C(m)H(2m+1)OSO(3)]; n = 4, 6, or 8; m = 8, 12) have been synthesized and characterized for their self-assembling behavior in the aqueous medium. Effects of alteration of alkyl chain length in cation and anion on surfactant properties of BAILs have been examined from surface tension measurements. The effectiveness of surface tension reduction for BAILs has been found to be exceptionally higher as compared to single chain surface active ILs/conventional surfactants. The thermodynamics of the aggregation process has been studied using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and temperature dependent conductivity experiments. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies showed that BAILs formed distinct aggregated structures depending upon the amphiphilic character present in the cation and anion. BAILs ([C(n)H(2n+1)mim][C(m)H(2m+1)OSO(3)]) form micelles when n = 4, 6; m = 8, intermicellar aggregates when n = 4, 6; m = 12, and vesicles when n = 8; m = 8, 12. Gold nanoparticles and microplates have been synthesized in micellar and vesicle solutions of BAILs using a simple photoreduction method. The studies show the potential of BAILs for constructing micelles and supramolecular assemblies, such as bilayer vesicles, which are effective in preparation of nanomaterials of controlled size and morphology.
